1996 was a dark year for The Italian Stallion. Sylvester Stallone had two pricey flops in 1995, with Judge Dredd and Assassins. His Christmas of 1996 disaster movie release, Daylight, was another box office bomb. Just a few years before, Stallone had made a significant comeback with Cliffhanger and Demolition Man, but now the whole industry was changing. Carolco, the company that financed some of the era’s biggest hits, had gone bankrupt, and action movies were getting smaller and smaller. Arnold Schwarzenegger was on the decline, with Eraser a smaller hit than usual. Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal were only a few years away from making direct-to-video movies. What was Sly to do? The result is one of his very best movies –Cop Land – as we explore in the episode of Sylvester Stallone Revisited.

Lady Colin Campbell Calls Prince Harry ‘The Worst’ of ‘Princess Diana’ and Prince William ‘The Best’
Royal insider Lady Colin Campbell has been highly critical of Prince Harry’s public behavior toward the royal family since exiting his role as a senior royal in 2020. In a new interview, Campbell discussed Princess Diana‘s death, her legacy, and how Diana’s two sons appear to have taken on different sides of her personality. She declares Prince Harry is “the worst” of his mother and his brother, Prince William, is “the best.”
Princess Diana’s ‘legacy’ is ‘her children,’ says Lady Colin Campbell
Lady Colin Campbell, who has written several books on the royal family, discussed Diana’s legacy in an interview with GBNews. She claims the differences between the Princess of Wales’ two sons are night and day.
“Princess Diana’s legacy is her children. However, I also think her legacy is about her children,” Campell explains.
“Diana was a very contradictory personality,” Campbell continues. “She was also a very divisive person.

More than two decades after Princess Diana‘s death, most people remember where they were or exactly what they were doing when they heard that the People’s Princess died following a car crash in Paris. In the years since, there have been some questions about the late princess’s final resting place. Well, she is buried in a location separate from the Spencer family vault and there’s a reason for it.
Here’s more on that and what Prince Harry said happened when he took Meghan Markle to his mother’s gravesite for the first time.

The set of The West Wing, a TV series set in a historically toxic workplace (the White House), was actually a real life toxic workplace, according to Rob Lowe. The actor, who played deputy communications director Sam Seaborn on the show, told Podcrushed (via Entertainment Weekly) that he worked on only four of the acclaimed series’ seven seasons because he was so unhappy.

“Yellowjackets” will look to take the Emmys by storm again after the first season of the Showtime hit came away with seven bids including a nomination for Best Drama Series. The show follows a high-school girls soccer team that survives a plane crash. What seems at first a lucky escape, however, soon devolves into something far more nightmarish as they try to survive in the Canadian wilderness. That’s one half of the story, set in 1996. The other half of the series focuses on the survivors as adults 25 years later in 2021.
The show stars Melanie Lynskey in the lead role — the adult version of Shauna — while Elijah Wood joined the season two cast as Walter Tattersall, a detective who tries to help Christina Ricci‘s Misty. “The Lord of the Rings” alum is a welcome addition to the cast of “Yellowjackets” and fits right in alongside fellow child actor Ricci.

“The Boys” ramped up its outrageousness in every way possible in its latest, third season— from, uh, a shrunken man venturing into a human orifice to Jensen Ackles‘ emergence as the Amazon Prime Video show’s satirical take on Captain America (Steve Rogers)… Soldier Boy.
The show, based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, is Eric Kripke‘s superhero satire. While comedic in many places, the show is first and foremost a drama and follows Karl Urban and Jack Quaid leading up a squad determined to take down the supes-gone-bad. The supes, in turn, are part of a team called The Seven (led by Anthony Starr‘s Homelander), which are handled by mega-company Vought International.

The strike remains a hot-button conversation, but the topic has changed. The writers are a given and the directors made a deal; today, it’s all about the actors.
The Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) begins contract negotiations June 7; its contract expires June 30. If SAG-AFTRA joined the writers on strike, it would mean a near-total shutdown of the industry.
SAG took the rare step of calling for a strike authorization vote and goes into the talks with of 97.91 percent of its members willing to go on strike if a fair deal isn’t reached.
“We’re really at an inflection point in the industry,” SAG-AFTRA chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland told IndieWire. “There are some issues that are really time sensitive and of crucial importance perhaps in ways that aren’t always the case. It’s an important moment for the labor movement in the entertainment industry and in the broader economy in this country.

Aaron Sorkin‘s The West Wing is one of the most optimistic shows to air on television. From 1999 to 2006, President Josiah “Jed” Bartlet, played by the versatile veteran actor Martin Sheen, and his idealistic staff of deep thinkers presented the illusion that Capitol Hill was where the finest minds in America worked together to find the right answers, and got bonus points for the most self-righteous. The NBC series began the same year as HBO’s The Sopranos, and could be seen as its polar opposite, though the two shows had many similarities. Both were considered dramas, but had so many individual laugh lines they veered into comedy. Each featured a strong leader who faced crises, at home and abroad.
Starting with the very first episode, President Bartlet confronted beltway blowback, global dissension, and harsh life-threatening decisions. Some of these issues were personal, because a president’s private life affects the political process.

For months fans have speculated who would succeed the late Logan Roy (Brian Cox) as the head of Waystar Royco on HBO’s critically acclaimed drama “Succession.” In the end, after the GoJo deal was approved by the board — and with Shiv (Sarah Snook) acting as the deciding vote — the servile Tom Wambsgans came out on top. And now it seems like his portrayer, Matthew Macfadyen, might as well.

Even though "Yellowjackets" fans are always hungry for more, the Showtime series' sophomore season has come to an end. Season 3 has already been confirmed, but it'll be a while before it airs; for what it's worth, the gap between seasons 1 and 2 was 16 months, the former beginning on November 14, 2021, and the latter on March 24, 2023.
Fear not, antler queens, because there's a movie out there perfect to tide you over. "Ravenous," directed by the late Antonia Bird. Released in 1999, the film's genre is just as hard to pin down as that of "Yellowjackets" — "Ravenous" oscillates from horror to bemused comedy, sometimes in the same scene. What the two works do have in common is that they're both stories about people on the edge of civilization, goaded by supernatural forces to devour their fellow man.

The younger Skarsgård joined the two-time Emmy winner for Best Drama Series in Season 3 as Lukas Matsson, a shrewd Swedish tech giant who’s set his sights on acquiring Waystar Royco, a transaction that has become increasingly complicated and contentious in the wake of the death of family patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) in the third episode of the HBO show’s 10-episode fourth season. New Delhi, April 25 (Ians) Poor air quality in India could be causing cognitive deficits in babies and toddlers, according to new research.
Researchers from the University of East Anglia in the UK worked with the Community Empowerment Lab in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, to see how in-home air quality affects infants’ cognition.
They worked with families from a range of socio-economic backgrounds in Shivgarh, a rural community in Uttar Pradesh — one of the states in India that has been most strongly impacted by poor air quality.
In the study, the team assessed the visual working memory and visual processing speed of 215 infants using a specially-designed cognition task from October 2017 to June 2019.
“The research for the first time shows that there is an association between poor air quality and impaired visual cognition in the first two years of life, when brain growth is at its peak,” said lead researcher Prof John Spencer,...

It was clear the days of the Big Four networks dominating the Emmys were slowly coming to an end 20 years ago; however, despite cable networks starting to gain momentum (with two receiving their first major wins), NBC and CBS still made a strong showing at the 55th Emmy Awards on September 21, 2003. HBO came into the night with a strong 53 major nominations, while NBC had 38 and CBS had 28; in the end, HBO and CBS tied with eight majors awards each and NBC trailed with six. Garry Shandling opened the event with a comedic monologue, while numerous presenters, including Ellen DeGeneres, George Lopez, Conan O’Brien, Martin Short and Wanda Sykes, carried the rest of the show without a host. For seven seasons, audiences tuned in to watch the fictional Bartlet Administration face the pressures of running the office of President of the United States of America in "The West Wing." Created by Aaron Sorkin, the series ran from 1999 to 2006 on NBC and followed President Jed Bartlet (Martin Sheen) and his dedicated staff as they overcame crises on a domestic and global scale while maintaining public support. Widely acclaimed across its entire run, "The West Wing" was nominated for a staggering 95 Primetime Emmys and ultimately won 26, including a nomination for its 2021 reunion special.
Praised for its frank tackling of real-world issues and its idealistic depiction of a liberal-oriented federal government functioning relatively free of cynicism, "The West Wing" is still one of the most highly influential political dramas on television. However, with creative shake-ups behind-the-scenes and several longstanding storylines that didn't quite click, not every season is as sterling as its superior counterparts.

Robert Benton and Paul Newman’s show-biz detective tale is one of the best-looking thrillers of 1998. With its star lineup of Susan Sarandon, Gene Hackman, Reese Witherspoon, Stockard Channing and James Garner, its the equivalent of a dog-eared comfy mystery paperback. The classic themes and stylistics are here, but in a new Hollywood where movie stars can get away with murder, and nobody seems to care. Everyone is excellent and the show quite enjoyable, even if it seems we’ve seen a lot of it before. A solid academic extra is the audio commentary by Alain Silver and James Ursini.

Hailing from Aaron Sorkin, "The West Wing" more than solidified itself as the benchmark for on-screen representation of life in the White House. From its snappy dialogue scenes to the culturally relevant themes, the series handled the volatile sociopolitical landscape with grace. A big part of what made "The West Wing" work so well is the ensemble cast that filled it out. Led by Martin Sheen as President Josiah Bartlet, the series went as far as its actors could go, which was very, very far. And, as it turns out, Sorkin and co. had a rule when it came down to casting the main crew.
Looking back at "The West Wing," every casting choice seems like a no-brainer. Allison Janney is irreplaceable as C.J. Cregg, while John Spencer is career-defining as Leo McGarry. The rest of the supporting cast feel intrinsically connected to their characters as well. Even Rob Lowe...

Today, Academy Award-winning writer Aaron Sorkin is known for creating complex characters who steal the hearts of viewers with witty dialogue and inspiring speeches. He's the man behind Jack Nicholson's declaration, "You can't handle the truth," and Will McAvoy's assertion that "America is not the greatest country in the world anymore." These days, Sorkin's ability to entertain an audience with the everyday lives of sportscasters, news anchors, and senior White House staff is above reproach, but that wasn't the case 24 years ago.
Since 2016, the world has been keeping a very close, no-nonsense eye on the political landscape, and The White House, but not so long ago it was all considered a big joke. In January 1998, the world was shaken when The Drudge Report revealed that President Bill Clinton was having an affair with a young White House intern, Monica Lewinsky. Watching "The West Wing" now feels like revisiting a moment in time. Aaron Sorkin's groundbreaking political drama follows President Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen) and his senior staff as they strive to make the world a better place during two terms in the nation's highest office. It's an idealistic — some would say naive — depiction of politics that feels like a fantasy in the divided America of today. Airing in the early days of peak TV, the network drama was unique in its verisimilitude, lack of studio interference, and inclusion of characters who looked, felt, and acted like real people.
You'd think that a show about the White House would revolve around its most famous occupant, but Potus is just one of its many compelling characters. Any way you look at it, “Ted Lasso” did not have a good night on Sunday. The defending Comedy Series champion went home completely empty-handed from that evening’s Creative Arts Emmys, losing 10 times over eight categories. While it’s definitely disappointing for the Apple TV+ program, there’s plenty of proof in recent Emmy history that the show could still rebound at the main telecast for Best Comedy Series.

The Emmy landscape has changed drastically in the past two decades. Going in to the 54th Emmy Awards, which took place on Sept. 22, 2002, it was a broadcast network — NBC — that led the nominations with 47. Emmy powerhouse HBO came in second with 38. FX and VH1 earned their first nominations while the first major streaming series, Netflix’s “House of Cards,” was still 11 years away. Several of this year’s contenders for Emmy gold were either nominated or won 20 years ago.
Laura Linney, who has been nominated nine times and won four statuettes, is nominated this year for her lead role in the final season of Netflix’s “Ozark” and as co-executive producer of this drama series contender. Two decades ago, she won her first Emmy for her lead role in the Showtime telefilm “Wild Iris.”

The way we watch television has changed a lot in the past couple of decades, as evidenced by the 54th Primetime Emmy Awards 20 years ago. Whereas streaming services and cable networks dominate the ceremonies now, 20 years ago NBC had the most major nominations with 47 and most major wins with 10; however, HBO was a strong contender, coming in second with 38 major noms and eight wins. This was also the first year that FX and VH1 received major nominations. Conan O’Brien hosted the ceremony on September 22, 2002, and even though some old “friends” were recognized, there were clear indicators that the major three networks were no longer in command. Read on for our Emmys flashback 20 years ago to 2002.
Although “Friends” was a leader in ratings and had received Emmy nominations in its first seven seasons, it had won very few. It finally won Best Comedy Series on its fifth nomination; this would be...

If you’ve been paying even the slightest bit of attention, “Succession’s” domination of the current awards cycle isn’t all that surprising. The HBO drama was beloved by critics from the jump, but it has grown much more popular and more beloved with each passing season as the series has maintained its quality and more people have discovered the sheer joy of watching the Roys battle themselves as well as the world around them. This has translated to more nominations and wins each season. So now, after recently pulling off a rare sweep of the four major guilds in the same year — something that hadn’t been done since the heyday of AMC’s “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad”– the show is looking ahead to the next hurdle: dominating the Emmys.
For its second season, “Succession” received 18 nominations, including one for Best Drama Series and nine for acting.

Exclusive: Toks Olagundoye, Hari Nef and Ian Duff have been cast as series regulars in ABC drama pilot L.A. Law. They join original cast members Blair Underwood and Corbin Bernsen, who are reprising their roles as Jonathan Rollins and Arnie Becker, respectively, in the revival of the iconic Steven Bochco legal drama. Olagundoye, Hari Nef and Ian Duff all play new characters.
In the pilot, written by Marc Guggenheim and Ubah Mohamed and to be directed by Anthony Hemingway, the venerable law firm of McKenzie Brackman — now named Becker Rollins — reinvents itself as a litigation firm specializing in only the most high-profile, boundary-pushing and incendiary cases.

Last Year’s Winner: Billy Crudup, “The Morning Show”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: Peter Dinklage was the last actor to earn back-to-back wins in the Best Supporting Actor, Drama category, and that was just a few years ago: 2018-2019. Before that, you have to go back to 1995-1996 to find a repeat winner, when Ray Walston took home two Emmys for “Picket Fences.” Billy Crudup will have a chance to defend his title when “The Morning Show” returns, but he won’t repeat this year, since Season 2 will not be released in time.
Fun Fact: Though it’s rare for the same actor to win in consecutive years, programs fare slightly better and repeat winners still surface regularly. Joe Pantoliano and Michael Imperioli won the Supporting category for “The Sopranos” in 2003 and 2004, while Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford, and John Spencer won for “The West Wing” between 2000 – 2002.

Aaron Sorkin certainly is surprised that he is going back to the Emmys with a nomination for The West Wing after all these years. Well, actually, the Emmy noms are for a pre-election reunion special for the iconic series that came about because Sorkin and many others connected with or starring in the original series felt it was imperative to do whatever they could to get people to go out and vote.
So, on October 15, HBO Max premiered A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote, a timely program that for the first time in 17 years brought Sorkin, executive producer/director Thomas Schlamme and the cast together for a special stage presentation of the “Hartsfield’s Landing” episode from the show’s third season — a particular episode that dealt with the importance of voting. Along with the cast there were interstitial appearances from President Bill Clinton, Michelle Obama and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Emmy nomination ballots day is like Christmas morning in TV land (not to be confused with TV Land). Nomination ballots for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards dropped on Thursday, as voting commenced and runs through June 28, and Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to go through the biggest surprises. Well, some of them — we’re still wading through all 490,590 pages.
First things first, since the Emmys adopted a new rule last year stipulating that the number of slots per category outside of drama and comedy series, which are fixed at eight, will be proportional to the number of submissions, we go through the finalized slots in the major categories. Most notably, the comedy lead categories are down one slot to five each — you know, like how it used to be back in the day. Similarly, the comedy supporting categories are going from eight to seven.

Exclusive: Lady Diana biopic Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart as the former Princess, has cast the supporting roles of Sarah Ferguson, the former wife of Prince Andrew, and Earl Spencer, Diana’s father.
Ferguson, the Duchess of York, will be portrayed by newcomer Olga Hellsing, a Berlin-based German model and actress who is fluent in English.
Earl John Spencer will be played by British-German actor Thomas Douglas, whose career has largely comprised supporting roles in German TV and features, most recently in Beta Film’s German-language historical mini-series Labyrinth Of Peace.
The film focuses on one weekend in the life of Princess Diana, as she spends the Christmas holiday with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, and decides to leave her marriage to Prince Charles.
Royal sisters-in-law Ferguson and Diana had a turbulent and complicated relationship, which was often very close but which soured in Diana’s final years.

With recent weeks filled by political and election news, a completely different type of awards campaign decision has finally been made. In a Gold Derby exclusive, we have learned from HBO Max and WarnerMedia that the recent “The West Wing” special will not be competing at the 2021 Golden Globes or SAG Awards.
Officially titled “A West Wing Special for When We All Vote,” the October program was written by series creator Aaron Sorkin and directed by executive producer Thomas Schlamme. The reason for not entering the races with the HFPA and Screen Actors Guild is simple: neither of those groups has a specials category. Technically they could submit as a TV movie with SAG but it wasn’t eligible with the Globes as a TV movie. The program was a staged recreation of the third season episode “Hartsfield’s Landing” and not really a typical telefilm.

A sequel to NBC’s “L.A. Law” starring Blair Underwood is in development, but this time at ABC.
The project would see Underwood reprise his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins alongside a new crop of young lawyers.
Marc Guggenheim would write the series and executive produce alongside Ubah Mohamed, with Anthony Hemmingway directing. Jesse Bochco, the son of the late Steven Bochco (who co-created the original series), would also executive produce.
Here is the logline for the new version: The venerable law firm of McKenzie Brackman reinvents itself as a litigation firm specializing in only the most high-profile, boundary-pushing and incendiary cases. Blair Underwood reprises his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins, who has gone from idealistic to more conservative as he clashes with millennial JJ Freeman to decide the best path forward for the firm to effect political and legal change.

After spending decades proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was far more than just James Bond, seven-time 007 Sean Connery decided it was safe to dust off the persona for The Rock (1996), playing former Special Air Service spy John Mason. This brilliantly batshit Michael Bay action adventure extravaganza, which has aged like a fine Coppola wine, also made a Hollywood superstar out of Nicolas Cage, then a recent Oscar darling known more for offbeat character work than beating up baddies.

If anything could get the cast of The West Wing back together again for a reunion special, it's the 2020 election. The HBO Max special, which premiered Oct. 15, revisits the season three episode "Hartsfield's Landing" for the benefit of When We All Vote, whose mission is "to make sure every eligible voter is registered and ready to vote in every election." In the episode, President Bartlet engages both Sam Seaborn and Toby Ziegler in a game of chess while dealing with a potential conflict between China and Taiwan. With the President focused on his very real conflicts, Josh Lyman tries to account for all 42 votes in a New Hampshire primary with C.J. Cregg and Charlie Young engaging in a battle of their own.

Most nights, once the emails have been answered and the television has been reviewed, I pick up a pen and start writing postcards. Sometimes the messages are in support of Supreme Court Justices in Ohio, sometimes they’re for congressional candidates in South Carolina. The addresses pour in from a nonprofit trying to help get out the vote, and the postcards stack up on the bar cart next to my door. As the ink runs low and my hand starts to ache — it turns out typing all day and writing all night is not the path to healthy wrists — I often wonder: Is this helping? Like so many citizens desperate for change this November, I want to do something to help facilitate change, and I need to do something to ease my mounting anxiety.

“See the whole board,” a chess-instructing Martin Sheen’s President Josiah Bartlet tells Rob Lowe’s Sam Seaborn in HBO Max’s A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote.
