Rick Newman, the founder of New York City’s hugely influential Catch a Rising Star comedy club that provided a training ground for the stand-up comics who would change the landscape of entertainment in the 1970s, died Feb. 20 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 81.
His wife Krysi Newman told The Washington Post that he died of pancreatic cancer.
Among the comics who began or developed their careers on the Rising Star’s Upper East Side stage are Jerry Seineld, Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, Richard Lewis, Andy Kaufman, Freddie Prinze, Robert Klein, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler. Larry David, Elayne Boosler, Rodney Dangerfield, Jay Leno, Joy Behar and Ray Romano.
One of the performers most associated with Catch a Rising Star was Richard Belzer, the longtime host of the club who died Feb. 19, just a day before Newman.
Newman, tweeted Billy Crystal, “gave me and so many our starts as stand ups.

The 75th annual Directors Guild of America Awards will announce nominations for the television categories Tuesday, January 10. Voting opened December 9 and runs through Friday, January 6. Awards will be given out Saturday, February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. For more on the film ceremony, head to IndieWire’s Awards Calendar.
With DGA voting underway, clear frontrunners emerge. There are past nominees whose work on ongoing series merits recognition once more, like Bill Hader with “Barry,” Lucia Aniello for “Hacks,” or Donald Glover with “Atlanta”. Then there are directors whose most recent work on new programs has already been honored elsewhere and is likely to be honored again at the DGAs. Popular series like “Abbott Elementary” and “The Bear” will likely earn deserved nominations, as well, but there are more names to consider — names that don’t have a clear peg for awards consideration, whether that’s because...

This What We Do in The Shadows review contains spoilers.
What We Do in the Shadows Season 4 Episode 8
After straying from the core mockumentary premise of the series, What We Do in the Shadows’ season 4 episode 8, “Go Flip Yourself,” doubles down on it as the worlds of vampire reality TV and human home improvement collide. This union has been a long time coming, as Laszlo (Matt Berry) is quite the fan of flipping shows, and the titular fixer-upper program is his long-time obsession. He has also proven himself to be a sucker for general contractors, and not always in a good, vampire, way.
Toby (Jason Sklar) and Bran Daltry (Randy Sklar) have seen the “worst of the worst” in home renovations, and the vampires’ “Mixed Up Mansion” on Staten Island promises to be their “toughest yet.” This isn’t just a sales ploy to upsell the “Superfan!” Laszlo Cravensworth. He’s seen every episode,...

Shamrock Capital, the LA-based investment firm created by the late Roy E. Disney, has closed a new content fund with $400 million in committed capital to acquire existing entertainment IP rights in film, TV, music and video games.
The Shamrock Capital Content Fund II follows an inaugural fund that raised $250 million and holds an interest in more than 800 films, 1,000 television episodes, and 5,000 music compositions. The funds don’t invest in unreleased content but beyond that have a broad scope, eyeing product that was just released into its initial window, to content that’s decades old. It tends to acquire rights directly from producers, directors, showrunners and artists versus major studios.
The deals aren’t announced but occasionally a seller will agree to make them public. In fall 2018, Shamrock acquired Tor Hermansen and Mikkel Erikson’s Stargate music publishing catalog with Katy Perry’s Firework, Rihanna’s Diamonds and Beyonce’s Irreplacable.

Callie Khouri shifted the attention off herself Tuesday night and on to the assault and hospitalization of “Empire” star Jussie Smollett in Chicago earlier that day.

It is part of YouTube’s (and all major streaming platforms’) push into adult animation. YouTube’s first full-length adult animated comedy series, Dallas & Robo, premiered on its Premium service earlier this year.
Written and executive produced by the Sklar brothers, Van Kirk and Julius Sharpe, Dumb People Town centers around a family in a Florida town struggling with the most important question of our times: Is it better to be dumb and happy? Or smart and miserable?
Arnett and Marc Forman executive produce via Electric Avenue along with Peter Principato and Joel Zadak via Artists First. Sony Pictures TV is distributing the project.

Starz has acquired a slew of comedy series, specials and films that launched on Seeso, the NBCUniversal-owned Svod service that shuttered last year.
Among the series in the deal are Take My Wife, Night Train with Wyatt Cenac and The Ucb Show. It also includes stand-up specials from the Sklar Brothers, Brian Posehn and Lachlan Patterson, along with The Pistol Shrimps, the documentary about a group of showbiz folks including Aubrey Plaza who play in a women’s recreational basketball league in L.A.
“We are excited to address the uncertain fate of several Seeso series, including the beloved Take My Wife series, by providing a new home for these programs and their fans at Starz,” said C. Brett Marottoli, Head of Program Acquisitions for Starz. “These comedies align strategically with many Starz Original series and will appeal to our audiences as we continue featuring more diverse casts and storylines across the Starz platforms.

Comedy comes in all shapes and sizes and some can be...a little shitty? Well at least when we're referencing the Sklar Brothers' new documentary Poop Talk. Cinelinx had the change to speak to the brothers about their upcoming film. The documentary revolves around exactly that: poop. Randy and Jason Sklar interviewed over 50 comedians and comedic actors about the topic, including themselves. Those familiar with the Sklar brothers comedy may be curious as to why they decided to do a fecal-centric documentary because they're not known for their blue (or should we say brown?) humor. Their pal, writer/director of the film, Aaron N. Feldman, proposed the idea to them and they had to think about it. “We had our own reservations,” explained Randy Sklar, “we thought about it then went back to him and said here's the movie we want to make – smart, honest discussion with funny friends...mixed...

'Teacher of the Year' movie with Keegan-Michael Key. 'Teacher of the Year' movie: Smart and funny socially conscious comedy Teacher of the Year manages to pull off one of the more difficult balancing acts in filmmaking: it actually is smart while still being funny. Teacher of the Year is smart about education, both as a vocation and as an industry; and it's both character and dialogue funny, leaning heavily on the free-agent talents of Keegan-Michael Key, half of the comedy duo, Key and Peele. Of late, Key has been a valuable asset in a number of comedies looking for a boost, including a stand-out performance in Pitch Perfect 2, currently in theaters. In Teacher of the Year, his name is Principal Douche – though he insists on the french pronunciation. You can imagine the jokes. Randy and Jason Sklar have hosted several different web series over the years. Now, the identical twins known for their TV show Cheap Seats and their podcast Sklarboro Country have released the first episode of You’re Doing It Wrong, a web series created in association with PBS Digital Studios.
In You’re Doing It Wrong, Randy and Jason aim to set viewers straight about common tasks that are often performed inefficiently. In the first episode, for example, the twins provide a series of life hacks related to the storage of fruit: Tomatoes should not be kept in the fridge, basil should rest in a bowl of water, and fruits will go bad faster if left to ripen next to one another.
This education package is backed up with the sort of quick cuts, humorous non-sequiturs, and fast-paced delivery that have defined many of Pbsds’ most successful web series. When discussing tomatoes,...

PBS Digital Studios hopes to correct some of your incorrect behaviors, even if they are seemingly insignificant. The network partnered with production house Kids at Play to develop the life-hacking, educational series You’re Doing it Wrong.
The 20-episodes of the You’re Doing it Wrong series will be hosted by comedians and brothers Randy and Jason Sklar. The duo will use facts, history, and humor to explain how everyday situations, such as peeling a hard-boiled egg or applying sunscreen, can often be improved or done more efficiently in a different manner. Kids at Play’s Head of Development, Mark Marraccini, originally came up with the idea for You’re Doing It Wrong when someone told him he shouldn’t sweep up broken glass, but should instead use a piece of bread to snatch up the last tiny pieces.
The Sklar Brothers will write the show alongside Peter Degler and Dan Van Kirk.

AMC loves it some Chris Hardwick. The cable television network that's been home to one, eight-episode season of the Hardwick-hosted Breaking Bad after show, Talking Bad, and no less than four seasons and 45 episodes (and counting) of the Hardwick-hosted Walking Dead after show, Talking Dead, will soon become home to the TV iteration of Hardwick's All-Star Celebrity Bowling. AMC ordered eight episodes of the competitive talk show that originally got its start way back in April 2012 under YouTube's $100 million Original Channels Initiative as a brand new web series on the then shiny new Nerdist Industries YouTube channel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, longtime online video veterans and mainstream funnymen Randy and Jason Sklar (who savvy online video viewers will recognize from web series favorites like Back On Topps and ["(Layers)"]) are slated to host the program. If the show is anything like its online video predecessor, it will pit Hardwick and...

If you're a sports fan (like me) and you had a habit of flipping channels late at night between 2004 and 2006 (also like me), then you should be familiar with the Sklar Brothers, whose Cheap Seats show provided four seasons of good laughs on Espn Classic. That series examined sports with a pop-culture minded, MST3K-styled attitude; now, the identical twins have returned with new show that does exactly the opposite. Randy and Jason Sklar are the hosts of Nerd Down and Ten, a new show on Nerdist that examples Internet culture using the production style of a sports talk show. As this linked commenter notes, the show is almost an exact copy of Espn's Pardon The Interruption, the long-running show where two hosts discuss a list of sports topics in a rapid-fire manner. Nerd Down even has a third analyst who corrects the main duo's errors, just like in Pti.

Colt Cabana has one of the most unique jobs in the world: comedic pro wrestler. When he's not busy dishing out punches and bodyslams for rabid crowds, he's making them laugh with his patented brand of slapstick. And this week, he's got to perform in front of one of the most intimidating crowds in the world: the Gathering of the Juggalos, the yearly summer music festival hosted by the notorious hip hop act, the Insane Clown Posse. Thousands of fans with painted faces will be heading to the sweltering heat of Cave-In-Rock, Illinois, for five days of Faygo soda, nudity and illegal substances -- and it's Cabana's job to play the villain as a marijuana-hating police officer.

If you're a "Girls" fan and don't know what to do with yourself while the show's between seasons, you're in luck. It turns out that there's a new HBO series in town, and it's right up your alley. Sort of.
It's "Boys"! A show about a group of 20-something guys living in Los Angeles and just trying to figure it all out, man.
So even if you don't hang out with Wolf Blitzer's son Bear or know someone who uses a photo of David Beckham as their resume, at least you can peer into their lives from your TV screen.

As identical twin comedians, Randy and Jason Sklar represent an unusual statistic all their own. And the brothers' own love of stats shines through in their work in sports-related comedy, from their series "Cheap Seats," which ran on Espn Classic for four seasons, to their "SportsCenter" segment "The Bracket" and their popular podcast "Sklarbro Country." With their new series "United Stats of America," which premieres on the History Channel tonight, Tuesday, May 8th at 10pm, the funnymen expand their fondness for numbers into broader territory by exploring topics like how long we live, how we spend our time, how we spend our money and how the average American is growing in size. Indiewire caught up with the siblings over the phone to talk about this new hosting gig and how humor and statistics can complement each other -- after all, as Jay explained, "In order to lampoon something, you have to understand it first.

Today is officially Blog Action Day 2009, and in support of this year's theme, Climate Change, we thought we would take a closer look at Good Magazine's Big Ideas web series made for Babelgum. The series is imaginative, if not a bit farcical in the fun ideas its guests cook up. But the concept of blank page thinking about our environment is important. Mountain Man, the surreal comedy that follows ex-folk star turned anti-government survivalist Jonas Hawkinus, recently relauched after a brief hiatus. As writer-director Matthew Mangs discussed in an e-mail correspondence with me, "We took a break from releasing Mountain Man every week because we could not keep up with the heavy post-production workload (editing, color-correcting, special FX, sound and music) when everyone involved has their own separate projects, careers, social obligations, vacations, etc. Mountain Man has never had a crew in the double digits.
