Pouvoir intime (Blind Trust)
Written by Pierre Curzi and Yves Simoneau
Directed by Yves Simoneau
Canada, 1986
Pouvoir intime, or Blind Trust if you’re of the Anglo persuasion, is a film that has more or less fallen through the cracks of time. It was issued on home video once upon a time, in the long-past age known as the VHS era, and hasn’t been seen in a newer format since. Luckily, some enterprising folks at the Fantasia International Film Festival got together with the Cinémathèque québécoise and got them to dust off their 35mm print of the film. Showing these kinds of movies serves a very specific purpose: they add depth and texture to a film culture that was still figuring itself out even in the mid-80s. That said, Pouvoir intime isn’t a dramedy about the middle class, or a political satire, or an Nfb documentary. It’s a no-nonsense heist movie,...

For some of the oldsters out there they may recall the 1973 Gamble & Huff-produced R&B hit single “I’ll Always Love My Mama” by the musical group The Intruders. This musical anthem was certainly a lyrical tribute to caring mothers and how their sacrifices shaped our childhood and adulthood. This finger-snapping song definitely captured the spirit of motherly guidance.
Naturally film has had its share of depicting motherhood over the decades. In fact, mothers of all types are presented before our eyes in packages of being nurturing, notorious, nutty, naive and nonsensical. However, there is something so special about the mother-son relationship that rivals the father-daughter dynamic. We have our share of proud Mama’s boys out there roaming about in society.

I’ve learned that two of USA Network‘s pilots, drama Horizon and comedy Divide & Conquer, are not going forward. The pilots, both from Universal Cable Prods., are being shopped elsewhere. Horizon was a big swing and a major departure for USA, being a period alien drama. Written by Bridget Tyler, exec produced by The Walking Dead‘s Gale Anne Hurd and directed by Yves Simoneau, Horizon is set during the height of World War II when a secretary at the FBI (Ruth Bradley) becomes the only person standing between Earth and an alien invasion. Penned by Peter Ocko, Divide & Conquer was clearly eyed as a companion to USA’s high-profile acquisition Modern Family. It too is a family comedy, about four children on a path to adulthood and their parents. USA has four other drama pilots, Complications, The Novice, Rush and Sean Jablonski, and one comedy, Love Is Dead,...

Back in July at the Television Critics Association press tour, NBC announced a slew of event series or miniseries productions that the network was moving forward on. The Hillary Clinton miniseries, which actually had a writer/director (Courtney Hunt) and a top-tier star (Diane Lane) attached, fell apart spectacularly and is dead. It's unclear where things stand on the adaptation of "Tommyknockers," which had Yves Simoneau attached to direct, or a Mark Burnett-produced story of the Mayflower landing. One event series that's definitely moving forward is NBC's "Rosemary's Baby." On Tuesday (December 10), NBC announced a formal greenlight for...

Production has wrapped and post-production started on director Yves Simoneau's Toronto-lensed, World War II era, alien TV pilot "Horizon", starring Cary Elwes and Ruth Bradley, under the supervision of "The Walking Dead" executive producer Gale Anne Hurd.
Written and co-produced by Bridget Tyler, "Horizon" was developed by Hurd, the creative force with James Cameron of the original "Terminator".
"...during the height of World War II, when women began entering the workforce, 'Horizon' centers on a Washington secretary (Bradley) at the 'FBI' who starts a secretive investigation into files that have been stamped with the codename 'Horizon'.
"She discovers that the clandestine project has something to do with the death of her husband who was apparently killed during a battle with a 'spaceship' in the South Pacific.

NBC is planning to administer a double dose of classic horror, with the news that the network is moving forward with miniseries adaptations of both Roman Polanski’s iconic horror film Rosemary’s Baby and Stephen King’s acclaimed novel The Tommyknockers.
The announcement indicates that NBC has been watching closely as ‘event’ miniseries like CBS’ Under the Dome and FX’s American Horror Story have delivered surprisingly high ratings, and as its own horror series Hannibal has quickly gained a loyal cult following.
NBC president Bob Greenblatt said that the Rosemary’s Baby reboot will in fact be more of a re-imagining of the original Ira Levin novel on which Polanski’s film was based, rather than a direct remake of the film. The miniseries will focus on a young woman and her husband living in Paris and will be an “edge-of-your-seat thriller” comprised of four episodes. Interestingly, the...

In a continuation of what is (for TV fans) one of the most wonderful times of the year, we have moved straight from Comic-Con season to TCA season. Twice a year the networks make presentations to the members of the Television Critics Association, and that’s one of the key times when we learn about what might be in our viewing futures.
NBC had their day on Saturday, and out of that came the announcement of the development of a limited-series adaptation of Rosemary’s Baby, and of Stephen King‘s Tommyknockers. Here are the details:
“Rosemary’s Baby” is a four-hour updated retelling of the bestselling novel by Ira Levin that was later adapted as a feature film about devil worship and the complex relationship between a young husband and wife. In the new version, the couple lives in Paris where this edge-of-your-seat thriller unfolds. Lionsgate is the production company.

With networks getting back in the mini-series game, it’s not too surprising that NBC exec Bob Greenblatt unveiled plans for two new reboots in mini form while talking to the Television Critics Association this weekend. Greenblatt offered that “We need to be in the event business” and went on to back this up by talking the Diane Lane Hillary Clinton biopic and then revealing that the network intends to adapt two horror novels for mini-series, despite both having adaptations already.
The most obviously controversial of the two is Ira Levin’s Rosemary’s Baby, adapted as an incomparable horror film by Roman Polanksi back in 1968. Why the understated and creepy tale needs to be a 4-hour “edge of your seat thriller” is unknown, or why for that matter, the setting needs to switch from Manhattan to Paris. It’s going to be hard to gauge what will come of this project,...

NBC has announced that they will be developing two new limited TV series events. One based on Roman Polanski's classic horror film, Rosemary's Baby, and the other will be another adaptation of Stephen King's 1987 novel The Tommyknockers. This will be the second small screen adaptation of King's novel. The 1993 adaptation sucked, so hopefully this new one will be a lot better.
Rosemary's Baby is a retelling of the bestselling novel by Ira Levin, and "the new version will focus on a young husband and wife living in Paris where 'this edge-of-your-seat thriller unfolds.'" For those of you who haven't seen the movie, it centers on a woman who goes through paranoid hell as she prepares to give birth to a devil baby.

NBC is developing miniseries adaptations of Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby and Stephen King's Tommyknockers...
Late last night and the night before, Tommyknockers, Tommyknockers, knocking at the door...
A cheerful memento mori from NBC arrives today in the news that they're re-adapting Stephen King's The Tommyknockers for television, even though ABC literally just did it.*
King's 1987 sci-fi novel, The Tommyknockers, about a community drawn under the thrall of a mysterious object they discover in the woods, is about to become a brand-new miniseries for NBC, with Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee's Yves Simoneau attached to direct.
Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby, famously adapted for cinema by Roman Polanski in 1968, is also to be given the miniseries treatment by NBC, with a Paris-set four-hour retelling of Levin's novel on its way. It's too early for casting or air date announcements and the like as yet,...

We recently found out that instead of moving forward with a fifth "Scream" film, Dimension Films has decided to focus on a "Scream" television series. MTV has now learned that Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin ("Revenge," "The Event," "Criminal Minds") have been hired to write the script. Wes Craven is in talks to direct the pilot episode. Meanwhile, NBC has revealed that it's developing a four-hour TV mini-series based on Ira Levin's "Rosemary's Baby" novel that was later turned into a 1968 film, directed by child rapist Roman Polanski. The network is also developing a new TV series based on Stephen King's 1987 novel "Tommyknockers," about the residents of a small Maine town and how they deal with what they perceive to be an alien spacecraft that has landed nearby. Yves Simoneau (Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee) will direct. And finally, NBC has ordered a four-hour mini-series based on former first lady Hillary Clinton,...

Beleaguered network NBC has announced that it is developing four new high-profile event series to join its already announced six-hour "Cleopatra" miniseries.
The news was announced at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour on Saturday. The first is a limited series entitled "Plymouth" which is being made by "The Bible" producer Mark Burnett. That series deals with the Pilgrims' journey across the Atlantic and the hardships of settling in the New World.
The most surprising of the four is what's being labelled as an "updated remake" of "Rosemary's Baby" which will be set in Paris. The project is being described as a new adaptation of the Ira Levin novel rather than a remake of Roman Polanski's classic film adaptation.
Also in the works is a four-hour miniseries about Hillary Clinton that will star Diane Lane and is being penned and directed by "Frozen River" filmmaker Courtney Hunt. This...

At today's Television Critics Association conference, NBC head Bob Greenblatt announced a couple of upcoming projects that may have FEARnet readers salivating.
An updated remake of Rosemary's Baby, based on the Ira Levin novel and originally filmed in 1968 by Roman Polanski, is on track for a four hour miniseries (likely split over two nights, the way they used to air miniseries in the 1980s and early 1990s). The story about a young wife who is convinced that she is carrying the devil's baby, will be set in Paris. Scott Abbott (Queen of the Damned) is working on the script.
Also on the schedule is a new version of The Tommyknockers, based on the novel by Stephen King. Greenblatt was inspired in part by the success of another King property, Under the Dome, which is doing gangbusters on CBS. It is the highest-rated scripted program of the summer season. During the Television Critics Association press tour earlier today, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt announced a number of new projects, including a Rosemary’s Baby miniseries and a project based on Stephen King’s The Tommyknockers.
Rosemary’s Baby will be released as a four-hour miniseries and is said to be an updated retelling, where the married couple at the center of the story live in Paris. There were less details provided about The Tommyknockers adaptation, but it was said that the success of Under the Dome was one of the big reasons for this project moving forward. We’re not sure if it’s going to be a miniseries or a limited series with the possibility of additional seasons, but will let readers know when more details become available. Like all the other broadcast networks, NBC is getting (back) into the miniseries business, greenlighting four new projects in addition to the follow-up to "The Bible" it picked up recently.
The four new projects are a biopic about Hillary Clinton that will star Diane Lane; an updated version of "Rosemary's Baby"; a remake of Stephen King's "The Tommyknockers"; and "Plymouth," about the Pilgrims settling in America.
"We need to be in the event business," network chairman Bob Greenblatt told reporters Saturday (July 27) at the TCA summer press tour. That includes lots of live programming (like a live "Sound of Music" set to air in December) but also programming like what it announced Saturday.
"Hillary," written by Courtney Hunt ("Frozen River"), will follow the former first lady, senator and secretary of state's life from 1998 -- around the time her husband, President Bill Clinton, was impeached -- to the present.

The Television Critics Association's Summer 2013 Press Tour is in full swing, and today it's NBC's turn to share some news. With the recent success of "Hannibal" and "Bates Motel," is it any wonder they're talking more short-form series based on popular horror titles?
The network is in early development on a handful of new projects, including a “Rosemary’s Baby” miniseries along with “Stephen King’s Tommyknockers.” (They also announced a behind-the-scenes look at Hillary Rodham Clinton and “Plymouth,” based on the epic story of the Mayflower’s landing in America.)
Excerpts from the Press Release:

Mitch Davis said during the press conference that the only way to properly describe the festival would be “to tie you to chairs, force feed you caffeine and sugar and talk to you for 17 days.” As usual, Mitch is simultaneously completely insane and completely accurate.
Last year, we published over 100 reviews/articles about/from Fantasia and recorded six podcasts. We intend to at least equal those numbers this year. Expect articles about our most anticipated films from several of us in the next few days, once we have time to study the 2012 Fantasia program book. (At 396 pages, you could use the damn thing to do wrist curls and I think that it has already been declared a Weapon of Mass Destruction by bugs everywhere.)

In her first U.S. gig, young Irish actress Ruth Bradley (In Her Skin) has landed the female lead in ABC’s drama pilot Beauty And The Beast. That makes for an Irish-Scottish pairing in the title roles of the project, a fantasy re-imagining of the classic Beauty and the Beast tale wherein an embattled princess, Grace (Bradley), discovers an unlikely connection with a mysterious beast, Shiro (Scottish singer-actor Darius Campbell), a mercenary bodyguard. Yves Simoneau is directing the ABC Studios pilot from a script by Jon Steinberg, Bradley’s casting comes on the heels of the Sundance premiere of the movie Grabbers, in which she stars opposite Richard Coyle. Bradley, repped by Anonymous Content and Hamilton/Hodell, next stars the ITV’s Titanic miniseries, which coincidentally airs on ABC this spring. Monique Gabriela Curnen (Lie To Me) rounds out the cast of another ABC drama pilot, the untitled Roland Emmerich drama,...

Alan Taylor, who won an Emmy for The Sopranos, has come on board to direct NBC's drama pilot Playboy. The project, from 20th TV, Imagine TV and writer Chad Hodge, is set at a Chicago Playboy club in the 1960s. Taylor has directed a total of five episodes of the acclaimed cable period drama about Don Draper & Co. It isn't because you make a co-production that you necessarily get the best out of Chinese expertise in making martial art films. Speaking about quality, Wushu Warrior looks like an awful made-for-tv film.
The story takes place in China during the 19th century. Lord Lindsay (Matt Frewer), a British merchant and also a drug trafficker, intends to bring opium in China by ship. However, because Rev. Elders (Matthew Bloomfield) is an outspoken critic of Lord Lindsay, he's killed. Hopefully, with the help of Rev. Elders' Chinese friends, his son, Jonathan, is taken to a safe village.
Once there, Jonathan will be taught Wushu. After many years of training, Jonathan embarks on a journey to avenge the death of his father and to put an end to Lord Lindsay's drug business.

V: The Complete First Season
Stars: Morenna Baccarin, Elizabeth Mitchell, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Logan Huffman, Laura Vandervoort, Scott Wolf | Created by Kenneth Johnson | Directed by Yves Simoneau, Fred Toye, David Barrett
Classic 80s sci-fi series V gets the reboot treatment with this series that originally aired on ABC in the States and SyFy here in the UK. And whilst this is V, this is not your fathers V. This new iteration really is the epitome of the very Hollywood concept of reboot – this is not a mere remake, it takes the same core idea as the original series but builds an entire new show around it, one that feels alot more relevant to todays post 9/11 world. Out are the analogies and parallels with World War 2 and the ideas of totalitarinism and communism, and in are the more modern themes of terrorism and the “alien” as invader.

When the new version of V first showed up, I was surprisingly hopeful. Back when it was simply a theory, I had little interest in a reboot of the camp alien drama, especially since reworking anything that Marc Singer has been a part of is pure folly. Like many of our recent trips back to the ’80s, there is too serious an air at work here, but the first few episodes were actually rather interesting. After that, the ratings proved that there was a market for the show, and that it was doing a fair job living up to whatever expectations had drawn viewers in.
While there are a variety of twists to the original story, the heart of the matter is the same, and the general architecture of the first season’s plot closely resembles the main points of the original. Aliens come to Earth with smiling faces, faces...

We’ve been bringing you lots of coverage of ABC’s popular ongoing reboot of the series V as of late. Scott Wolf, Laura Vandervoort, and Joel Gretsch have all spoken with us about the show, and in continuing that trend, we recently got the chance to sit down with Logan Huffman, who plays “Tyler” on the show.
Logan doesn’t come from a big acting background or know somebody in the industry. He was picked to play the role on V because he was perfect for it, and he couldn’t be more humble about it. We were able to ask Logan lots of questions about things to come on the series, and he was more than happy to let us in on a few secrets.
The Flickcast: With things up in arms both planet-side and on the ship, what can you tell me about tonight’s episode of V?...

The first four episodes of V introduced us to two vastly different women from opposing sides who, on the surface, share only two traits in common: strength and loyalty to their families. FBI Agent Erica Evans and Visitor Queen Alien Anna are both mothers who would do absolutely anything for their children Tyler and Lisa, respectively.
Maternal Instinct
Morena Baccarin, who plays Anna with a disarming combination of tranquil confidence and charm, is "really looking forward to seeing the face-off between the two characters, and what will happen. We both have children to protect, and goals for our races and species. So it is pretty high-stakes."
Elizabeth Mitchell notes that her character Erica, on the other hand, is "very emotional. She's emotionally connected to her child, she's emotionally connected to her country. She is not a woman who is absent from that, so that will either hurt or help her.

Simon West, who last year helmed the pilot for Fox's action drama "Human Target," is back on pilot-directing duty this season with NBC's drama "The Cape," about a former cop-turned-masked hero.
Meanwhile, in a sign that broadcast networks are looking to emulate the light, quirky feel of USA Network series for their crop of shows, a pair of hot USA pilot directors -- Jace Alexander and Bronwen Hughes -- are making a transition to broadcast pilots.
Alexander, who helmed the pilots for USA's hits "Burn Notice" and Royal Pains" as well as the pilot for Syfy's breakout dramedy "Warehouse 13," is tapped to direct ABC's drama pilot "Edgar Floats," about a police psychologist-turned-bounty hunter. Hughes, helmer of the pilot for USA's "White Collar" and the cable net's latest pilot, "Facing Kate," is on board to direct another ABC hourlong pilot, the dramedy "Cutthroat," about a Beverly Hills mom running a drug cartel.

With its pseudo historical storyline, vicious combat, free world parkour roaming, and just massive cool factor, 2007’s Assassin’s Creed was a massive hit, selling over eight million copies and launching a new entertainment franchise. While the game was very repetitive (how many viewpoints can there be in one city) and ended with a massive cliffhanger, the anticipation for the sequel is massive. To prepare for its November 17th release, publisher Ubisoft has taken a cue from what publishers have done before: prepare some juicy web series content. Earlier in the summer we wrote about how the feature film Terminator: Salvation used its video game engine to produce a machinima prequel series to the events of the film. Perhaps Ubisoft took notice of February's Escape from City 17 live action Half Life 2 short, because the opposite has occurred, the web series for the launch of Assassin’s Creed 2 titled Assassin’s...

The ABC TV pilot, remaking the 1980's alien invasion series V started shooting in Vancouver March 13 with Yves Simoneau directing for producer Kathy Kilroy and Executive Producers Scott "The 4400" Peters, Jace Hall and Steve Pearlman. Filming wrapped April 4. Warner Bros. TV produced the pilot, sold as a spec script to ABC. "Whenever I mention V to anybody, they still have a lot of good memories about the original series," said Peters. "Everybody has that imagery of the uniforms, or the visitor eating a hamster. It.s a science fiction icon and too good to pass up." Peters said the new V follows catastrophic events after the masses blindly follow a new leader, with a a focus on 'Erica Evans', a Us Homeland Security agent. As in the 1980's version, the show opens with an army of spaceships hovering over the world.s major cities, with the 'visitors' secretly planning...

Co-written by Robert Davenport, "Hellfighters" tells the true story of black soldiers from Harlem who brought jazz music to France when they were sent to fight there during World War I.
Wright hopes to shoot the project in the U.S. and in Gaul with a cast assembled of "the greatest living black actors," he said in an interview.
Wright, currently in France as part of Ile-de-France/Franco-American cultural fund's "Autumn Stories" program, is shopping for a French co-producer and scouting locations.

Michael Christofer has adapted Michael Connelly's best-selling crime novel Void Moon for Nu Image/Millennium Films. Director Yves Simoneau is attached to direct.
Producer Avi Lerner said no one is cast yet. "Offers are out for all the main roles," he said.
The 2000 novel centers on Cassie Black, a former robber of casino gamblers who leaves her life of crime to become a Porsche saleswoman. But when a dark secret from her past threatens to be exposed, she returns to her former line of work and faces her old nemesis: a shady private investigator who moonlights doing dirty work for casino owners.
The project once was in development at Warner Bros. but was put in turnaround and is now being produced by Bill Gerber and Lerner.
Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-winning playwright Christofer (The Shadow Box) adapted the novel after a previous screenplay was written by Connelly, so writing credits are yet to be determined.
Simoneau won an Emmy this year for directing the HBO film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.
Christofer is repped by ICM and attorney John LaViolette.
