The world of comic book movies stands largely on the shoulders of devoted actors who have dedicated a large portion of their careers to playing famed roles. From Chris Evans as Captain America to Scarlett Johanson as Black Widow, the list goes on. However, in terms of holding on to that role for the longest time ever, no one comes close to Hugh Jackman and his stint as Wolverine. However, despite a staggering tenure of 24 years and continuing, the actor has not evaded the thought of letting go of his character.

Canadian director Louise Archambault’s latest work, Irena’s Vow has a fascinating real-life story at the center of it. It is about a young Polish woman going out of her way to save the lives of as many as twelve Jews during the Second World War. But the execution of it is extremely basic. Naturally, the result is another war-drama movie that is decent at best and completely rests on the shoulders of its lead performer, Sophie Nelisse. Well, I have to say Nelisse makes it work by being truly fantastic in the role of Irena. While Irena’s Vow fails to be anything other than a biopic filled with tropes, it does throw you a surprise by casting Dougray Scott as a Nazi officer. I have an affinity for the actor thanks to his villainous turn in Mission: Impossible 2, which was released almost a quarter century ago; since then,...

"Sex 'n bugs 'n sausage rolls." ShineHouse has revealed a new official US trailer for a British indie comedy called La Cha Cha, directed by filmmaker Kevin Allen. After first premiering in the UK in 2021 during the pandemic, the film is set for a VOD release in the US this April a few years later. Liam Hourican stars as Solti Buttering, who is on a road trip to scatter his grandfather's ashes. Along the way he stumbles upon "La Cha Cha", a closed holiday park with a lively off-grid retiree community. Struggling to keep the place going, feisty owner Libby and brother Damien unveil an unconventional plan to sustain it and the residents. This also stars Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, Sonny Ashbourne Serkis, Dougray Scott, Alfie Allen, Keith Allen, Llyr Ifans, with Rhys Ifans & Melanie Waters. Long before X-Men films and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine became popular among movie lovers, James Cameron had plans to make an X-Men film. The Avatar director’s ex-wife and Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow was set to direct the film. The reported lineup for the film was also pretty awesome, including Bob Hoskins as Wolverine and Angela Bassett as Storm. However, one Marvel character ruined these plans and the film never got past the planning stage.

Bryan Singer’s X-Men films re-ignited audience interest in superhero films, particularly the Marvel films. If the film produced by James Cameron happened way back in the ’90s, it would’ve turned around the fate of Marvel Studios.

The CW is spicing up its lineup with an exciting twist on the classic Sherlock Holmes saga. They’re rolling out ‘Sherlock & Daughter,’ a fresh take that pairs the iconic detective with an unexpected partner – his possible daughter. David Thewlis steps into Sherlock’s shoes, while Blu Hunt plays Amelia, the young American who might just be his offspring. Big news for fans of All American and Walker!
The CW announced its spring slate of shows today, and both series will be returning to our screens sooner than expected.
All American is the CW's most-watched show, so it was no surprise that the announcement began with an update on the network's popular football drama.
The saga of star wide receiver Spencer James is set to return for its sixth season on April 1.
Today's announcement did not provide any details about the new season's plot, but it did confirm All American's status as the network’s #1 series among Adults 18-49, the most watched series on digital, and had the largest total audience across all platforms.
So yeah, execs might be even more excited about the return of All American than the show's fans are.

There are loads of tantalizing Hollywood casting what-ifs. Tom Selleck would've played Indiana Jones had he not been previously committed to CBS' "Magnum P.I." Pierce Brosnan was set to succeed Roger Moore as James Bond after "A View to a Kill," but NBC, realizing the star of their just-canceled "Remington Steele," was a hot commodity, resurrected the show for a fifth season (after which it was canceled again). And there's always poor Dougray Scott, who had to give up the role of Wolverine in Bryan Singer's "X-Men" when "Mission: Impossible II" went over schedule.
These were franchise- and career-altering decisions. What would Harrison Ford have done after the conclusion of the "Star Wars" original trilogy in 1983? Would Brosnan have rejuvenated the flagging Bond series, thus averting the six-year retooling period between "License to Kill" and "GoldenEye?" Could Scott have connected with audiences as emphatically as Hugh Jackman did in the role of Logan?...

Once upon a time, in the pre-mcu age, there was an X-Men franchise at 20th Century Fox, and ... it wasn't half-bad! At first!
Bryan Singer's "X-Men" was the first Marvel-derived blockbuster in the history of motion pictures ("Blade" had been a standalone hit before), and the beneficiary of crackerjack casting with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. Greenlit on a tight budget by a leery studio, the film's massive success meant Singer got close to carte blanche on the sequel "X2," which delivered the kind of mutant mayhem comic book fans had been jonesing to see on the big screen since Chris Claremont and John Byrne's 1970s heyday.
When Warner Bros. lured Singer away to direct the creepy "Superman Returns," Hollywood cockroach Brett Ratner crawled up and onto the director's chair and delivered the execrable "X-Men: The Last Stand."
The franchise didn't die, but it was threatening to become Wolverine-centric.

Hugh Jackman thought he hung up his claws for good as Wolverine after Logan. But he was worried that he didn’t give his character a worthy send-off.

When Canadian director Louise Archambault shot her Holocaust drama Irena’s Vow — about a young woman’s heroism in hiding Polish Jews from Nazi occupiers – she faced present-day obstacles during production in Poland.
Archambault witnessed a makeshift refugee camp filled with Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s invasion of their country next to her hotel in Warsaw, and had to navigate a security cordon as U.S. President Joe Biden stayed in that same hotel in March 2022.
“I just wanted to go into my hotel room and I couldn’t get through because of so much security,” Archambault recalled after returning to her hotel after a morning of scouting new locations for Irena’s Vow, only to encounter vigilant Secret Service agents as she waved her room key card.
And visiting Warsaw’s main train station, which at the time was a major pit stop for millions of Ukrainian refugees, brought home the horrors of the Russian invasion.

In Eastern Poland in 1939, Irena Gut (Sophie Nélisse) works as a nurse. She's just found out that Poland has been invaded by Germany, and her whole life is about to change. Before she knows it, Irena is ushered away to a munitions factory where she does intensive labor all hours of the day. She's been separated from her mother and sisters and is told her only chance of survival is to assist the German war effort.
Impressed by her "German" heritage (Irena is not aware of any actual German background), Major Rugmer (Dougray Scott) reassigns Irena to a new placement, doing domestic housework. There, she works under Herr Schulz (Andrzej Seweryn), who tells her she's to supervise the work of 11 Jewish tailors -- their work has been unsatisfactory, and it's suspected they've been lying about their abilities. Shulz gives Irena valuable advice on how to survive her miserable circumstances: "Look at your own two feet,...

Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA actors and WGA writers strikes, the Toronto Film Festival continues to turn up the star wattage for its 48th edition, adding movies with Dakota Johnson, Bérénice Bejo, Awkwafina, Sandra Oh and Mads Mikkelsen to its lineup on Thursday.
For the Gala section, TIFF unveiled the A-list heavy crime drama Finestkind from Brian Helgeland, the Oscar-winning writer-director behind Mystic River and L.A. Confidential; and A Knight’s Tale, which stars Ben Foster, Jenna Ortega, Tommy Lee Jones and Toby Wallace.
Also headed to Roy Thomson Hall is the South Korean drama A Normal Family, directed by Hur Jin-ho, the Korean auteur who in the past premiered Dangerous Liaisons and April Snow in Toronto. TIFF earlier tapped fellow Korean director Ryoo Seung-wan’s Smugglers for its Special Presentations sidebar, and has now bumped that drama up to a gala screening in Toronto after a world bow in Locarno.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” now playing in theaters.
The “Mission: Impossible” movies have no shortage of death-defying stunts, but the Tom Cruise-starring action franchise is known for another iconic magic trick: its mask reveals.
“Dead Reckoning Part One” features two mask reveals — in the first, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt uses a mask to infiltrate a meeting between CIA director Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny) and officials from various intelligence agencies about a rogue artificial intelligence system, known as the Entity. The other is a face swap between Hayley Atwell’s Grace, a pickpocket who becomes embroiled in Imf’s hunt for the Entity, and Vanessa Kirby’s black-market arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis, aka the White Widow.
“It was so much fun. It was the first time two women have got to do that,” Kirby told Variety on the red carpet...

When Tom Cruise accepted his first mission as Ethan Hunt, I bet the star never thought that he’d still be playing the character nearly thirty years later, with no plans to stop anytime soon. But, as any franchise fan can tell you, not all Mission: Impossible movies are created equal, and we’re going to try to break them down from worst to best in our Mission Impossible movies ranked list!
7 – Mission: Impossible II:
Here’s the thing – many people hate this movie. I honestly don’t know why. Is it the worst Mission: Impossible movie? Sure. But, simultaneously, “worst” doesn’t mean the same thing for this franchise that it does to others. Even if it is the worst Mission: Impossible movie, there’s still plenty to like about it. Arguably, John Woo was the one who transformed Tom Cruise into an action hero, as we’d...

This article contains some Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One spoilers.
As hard as it is to remember these days, there was a time when the “Mission: Impossible” title was not synonymous with god-tier action sequences and breathtaking stunts that appeared designed to push the boundaries of big screen spectacle. In fact, when Tom Cruise first slipped into a pair of Ethan Hunt’s running shoes in 1996, the original Mission: Impossible film was viewed as much through the lens of it being an adaptation of a popular, if fading, television series from the 1960s as it was a Cruise star vehicle. And that tension led to quite a bit of criticism from fans of the show over a plot twist where the series’ original hero (now played by Jon Voight) turned out to be the villain.
We’re not here to pass judgment on that creative choice. But by moving...

"Mission: Impossible II" is the most James Bond-flavored of the film series. John Woo's action is characteristically explosive, especially compared to Brian De Palma's lighter touch in the first film and the later movies' emphasis on death-defying stunts.
It's the only film so far where Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) isn't framed for treason or disavowed by the Impossible Mission Force (Imf). No, foiling the terrorist theft of a bio-weapon is just a day at the office for him, the way it is for Bond. Ethan even has a girl of the week, Nyah Nordoff-Hall (Thandiwe Newton).
Sir Anthony Hopkins also makes an uncredited appearance as Commander Swanbeck, who is M in all but name. Like the MI6 director in "Bond," Swanbeck is the old British man who gives our hero his mission. Originally, Woo and his crew had a different knighted British thespian in mind for the part: Sir Ian McKellen.

In the wake of Tim Burton's "Batman" movies, Alan Moore's "Watchmen" and "Swamp Thing" run, and the subsequent rise of grim, violent characters like the Punisher and Spawn, X-Men stalwart Wolverine became one of the most popular characters around. With his metal retractable claws, ever-present cigar, and berserker rage mode, he seemed more suited to the moment than some of his more goody-goody mutant hero cohorts. It's safe to say that in the '90s, he was probably the most beloved comics character not to have a movie yet. In part, Hollywood was torn: should they make a Wolverine solo film first, or go full-on X-Men? The majority of superhero movies up to that point featured singular heroes in worlds where no others existed. A team film, then, might stretch credulity with audiences used to suspending disbelief only as far as one.

Drew Barrymore is celebrating the 25th anniversary of "Ever After." On Tuesday, the talk-show host reunited with costars Melanie Lynskey and Megan Dodds on "The Drew Barrymore Show," and the trio relived some of their fondest memories from making the movie. "We're just here in a time machine, and we're back 25 years ago," Barrymore said. "I literally can't even believe that I get to be here with my sisters - my stepsisters." Lynskey and Dodds were both dressed in their evil-stepsister costumes, while Barrymore wore a fairy costume similar to the one she wore in the 1998 movie.

If you love the 1980s – specifically, the neon-lit, Talking Heads-blaring, Delboy swagger of the 1980s Cockney – then Sky’s new crime thriller A Town Called Malice is right up your street.
Meet the Lords
Created by The Sweeney’s Nick Love, this eight-part drama centres on the Lord family, a South London gang whose criminal heyday might be behind them, but who are still up for causing trouble. After a spot of bother with a rival gang (and leaving a policeman for dead), they flee to Spain’s Costa del Sol to lay low, and in amongst the pina coladas and palm trees realise they have a chance to recapture their former glory and become criminal top dogs once more.
The series premiered on Sky Max at 9pm on Thursday 16th March, and the full box-set is already available to watch on Now.

The cordyceps fungal infection of "The Last of Us" may be the hottest infestation on television, but lest we forget John Wyndham's groundbreaking novel "The Day of the Triffids," which featured a tall, mobile, carnivorous plant species hellbent on eating us all. If the title sounds familiar, it's likely due to the film of the same name by Steve Sekely and Freddie Francis, or it's from singing the line "and I really got hot when I saw Janette Scott fight a Triffid that spits poison and kills," in the song "Science Fiction (Double Feature)" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."
Johan Renck, director of the critically acclaimed HBO limited series, "Chernobyl" has been announced by The Hollywood Reporter as the latest to tackle Wyndham's novel, with a new series adaptation for Prime Video. Amazon Studios snagged the rights to the novel, looking to adapt the story as a collection of miniseries.

A TV series adaptation of John Wyndham’s sci-fi classic The Day Of the Triffids has been put into fast-track development by Amazon Studios. According to sources, Johan Renick, Emmy winner for HBO’s Chernobyl, is attached to direct and executive produce. Don Murphy and Susan Montford executive produce for Angry Films.
With its post-apocalyptic setting and plot, Wyndham’s 1951 novel draws parallels to HBO’s breakout hit The Last Of Us. In The Day Of the Triffids, after most people in the world are blinded by a meteor shower, triffids — tall venomous, carnivorous plants — start killing the rest. The story centers on Bill Masen, a biologist who specializes in triffids. He leads survivors in their fight against the killer plants and at some point rescues a young sighted girls and travels with her for several days.
The English book has had three UK radio adaptations and a 1962 feature starring Howard Keel.
