There was a significant degree of excitement in horror circles when it was announced that British director Ben Wheatley was going to be directing the sequel to 2018’s Jason Statham vs Giant Shark blockbuster The Meg. The hope was that Wheatley’s horror sensibilities and eye for jet-black humour would add a bit of bite to what was otherwise a passably entertaining, but ultimately uninspired Jaws retread. Unfortunately, those hopes have not come to pass, as there’s very little trace of the acclaimed British director’s signature touch in this largely derivative sequel.

The following article contains major spoilers for the novels Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror and The Trench, as well as the feature films The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench.
One year before Steven Spielberg made us all afraid to go into the water, Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel Jaws took the literary world by storm. Nearly fifty years after publication it remains one of the most popular examples of shark fiction with few titles entering the waters of its elite circle. One such novel is Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten.
Published in 1997, this sci-fi horror brings to life Otodus megalodon, a prehistoric relative of the great white shark estimated to stretch up to 65 feet in length. The novel pits retired rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham in the movies) against this mammoth beast after it escapes from a warmer pocket of water near the Mariana Trench.

Z Cam strikes again. The super affordable cinema camera was utilized (once again) in a mega-budget Hollywood movie, Meg 2: The Trench. Z Cam E2-F6 full-frame boxy camera was attached to an Fpv drone for the intense aerial shots in the movie. That’s in continuation to its previous role as a crash cam in Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning.

The summer box office season may have reached the dog days of August, but it’s hardly looked stronger over the past few months. Though the openings of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and “Meg 2: The Trench” won’t be able to take down “Barbie” as the top performer in North America, both new releases are boosting theaters to a weekend with four different features grossing north of $25 million.
Paramount Pictures’ “Mutant Mayhem” added $9.3 million from 3,858 locations on Friday, tracking neck-and-neck with “Oppenheimer” for second place on domestic charts. The animated feature, produced by Nickelodeon Movies and Point Grey Productions, opened with Tuesday evening preview screenings and is now tracking for a $42 million five-day debut — squarely within the projections of $35 million to $45 million heading into the weekend.
That’s not shabby for the “Tmnt” entry, which cost only $70 million to produce — an especially economical figure for an animated studio release.

Every summer movie season deserves a killer shark flick! After all, it was a killer shark movie that pretty much kicked off what we now know as the "summer blockbuster" way back in 1975, the immortal "Jaws." Because of that film's success, every killer shark venture is inevitably compared to that Spielberg classic, its three sequels, and the large number of copies that appeared immediately in its wake. In a subgenre that's been through the waves of popularity, postmodernism, and back, there's not a ton that's wholly new out there in the ocean.
For that reason, the Sharksploitation subgenre has generally settled into a pattern not unlike the slasher, an "if it ain't broke,...

Plot: When an evil mining operation unearths prehistoric beasts from the ocean’s depths, including multiple megalodons, rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) must suit up to face the return of an old enemy.
Review: 2018’s The Meg overcame middling reviews (including one from yours truly) to become an unlikely global success at the box office. Like its predecessor, Meg 2: The Trench is based on a novel by author Steve Alten, and what’s exciting to genre fans is that the great Ben Wheatley is behind the camera. For those who may not know his work, Wheatley is widely considered one of the UK’s best genre directors, with him having made Kill List, Sightseers, Free Fire, High Rise and – recently – the Netflix remake of Rebecca. This is different for him because it’s a big-budget event movie. How does it fare compared to the original?
Honestly, it’s a mixed bag.

"The Meg," the movie that dared ask, "What if a shark ... was really big?", now has a sequel that asks, "What if there were even more really big sharks? And also, what if we made that boring?" A film destined for the August dumping pile, "Meg 2: The Trench" is notable because it comes from filmmaker Ben Wheatley, a director responsible for the disturbing masterpiece "Kill List," the J.G. Ballard adaptation "High Rise," and more. Wheatley is an excellent filmmaker, and the idea of giving him a blockbuster budget to make a giant shark movie is enticing, at least on paper. Sadly, Wheatley can't work his magic here, as he's saddled with a clunky, dull, low-energy script by Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris. Just how do you make a movie about gigantic prehistoric sharks chomping on modern-day humans so dull? It's kind of impressive.

Jon Turtletaub’s The Meg was frustratingly dour and straight-faced for a film that pit Jason Statham’s rescue diver Jonas Taylor and a bunch of research scientists against a prehistoric megashark. And for its first hour, Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2: The Trench is also a derivative and listless affair, feebly drawing influence from the likes of Alien, Jaws, and The Abyss but never coming close to approximating their mood of tension and horror.
Meg 2 finds Jonas now working as an eco-warrior alongside engineer buddies Mac (Cliff Curtis) and DJ (Page Kennedy) and a few other scientists. Again venturing into “the trench”—the deepest part of the ocean where megalodons, or megs, in the world of the film still flourish—Jonas and his team encounter an illegal mining operation and eventually find themselves trapped and forced to take extreme measures to escape. This underlit stretch of Wheatley’s film...

After the 2018 Jason Statham-starring sci-fi action/horror extravaganza The Meg made an imposing global haul of roughly $530 million ($385 million of that from outside the U.S.), it became instantly inevitable that more giant deep-sea monsters would quickly be hatched to populate a sequel. It follows that some of these overgrown aquatic freaks might be very hungry, or perhaps just anti-social and angry that their population is being slightly decreased. Fortunately, Statham is there when he’s most needed, taking on countless creatures whose deep-water habitat is being invaded, perhaps for the first time since the beginning of time. Little wonder they’re upset.
At first, everything about Meg 2: The Trench appears bigger and stronger, now that it’s apparent that the producers look to have a major money-making franchise on their hands. Unfortunately, these same producers, along with their collaborators, have for some reason stinted in the creation...

For a certain class of cinephile, the news that Ben Wheatley (Ben Wheatley! “Kill List” and “Free Fire” and “A Field in England” Ben Wheatley!) was directing the sequel to Jon Turteltaub’s 2018 hit “The Meg” could only be met with joy and confusion. If nothing else, it suggested a big-budget film about Jason Statham fighting massive prehistoric sharks that would actually be fucked up, creepy and scary and weird and spine-tingling. Alas, “Meg 2: The Trench” is none of those things, and only occasionally (perhaps even accidentally) fun, yet another seemingly unassailable combination of story and filmmaker that fails to capitalize on any of its obvious promises.
It’s never a good sign when you’re checking your watch during a film — especially a film built on the inherently entertaining elevator pitch of “Jason Statham fights massive prehistoric sharks!” — but audiences will likely find themselves doing just that during...

Back in 2018, Warner Bros. scored a massive, somewhat unexpected success with "The Meg." The adaptation of Steve Alten's book of the same name, in which Jason Statham takes on a thought-to-be-extinct megalodon, proved to be a big winner with audiences, raking in $530 million at the global box office. Now, five years and a full global pandemic later, Statham is back in the sequel, "Meg 2: The Trench," which once again hopes to become a late summer sleeper hit. This time, though, it appears competition is going to be a bigger issue.
Box Office Pro currently estimates director Ben Wheatley's big shark sequel could make anywhere between $22 and $27 million domestically on its opening weekend. One of the other giant creatures we’ll be seeing in Meg 2: The Trench is an octopus, and you can get a glimpse of some giant octopus action in this promo, including a moment where the octopus gets in a fight with a Meg! This one promotes the release of the film in China, where The Meg performed particularly well back in 2018. And it’s unlike any movie poster you’ll ever see here in the States.
Check out the Chinese poster below and see The Meg 2 in theaters on August 4, 2023.

Last week, Warner Bros. unveiled the trailer for Meg 2: The Trench, director Ben Wheatley’s sequel to Jon Turteltaub’s 2018 “Jason Statham vs. a giant shark” movie The Meg (watch it at This Link). If that trailer left you wondering if the sea creature mayhem of this film was going to boost it into the R rating territory, you can stop wondering. Because it hasn’t. Just like The Meg, Meg 2: The Trench has earned a PG-13 rating. The Motion Picture Association ratings board has given it a PG-13 for action/violence, some bloody images, language and brief suggestive material.
The screenplay for Meg 2: The Trench has been written by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, and Erich Hoeber, the same writing team that was on the first film. These films are inspired by a series of novels written by Steve Alten.

Big screen shark attack sequel Meg 2: The Trench will be swimming into theaters on August 4, 2023, and today the film has received its official rating from the MPA.
Like the previous film, Meg 2: The Trench has been rated “PG-13” for…
“Action/violence, some bloody images, language and brief suggestive material.”
Last week’s bloody official trailer suggested that Meg 2 could potentially be going a bit harder on the violence than the disappointing 2018 movie, but there was realistically no way Warner Bros. was going to risk potentially cutting into the sequel’s box office profits with an “R” rating.
The good news? As the trailer suggests, there are a lot of gruesome ways a massive shark can eat people – and other monsters, including a T-Rex this time around! – while still sticking to that PG-13 rating. After all, the three Megalodon sharks in the upcoming movie are so large that they’re literally swallowing humans whole,...

For some people, horror cinema is defined by scrappy outsiders who make films on shoestring budgets, but that's not really what it's all about — and it never has been. Since the beginning, horror has been an extremely popular (and profitable) film genre, and one successful horror movie usually begets multiple follow-ups.
As the characters in "Scream 2" note in the film's meta-commentary, sequels are a controversial topic among movie fans, and they're not always well-received from a critical standpoint. However, even if fans are skeptical, they'll probably still show up to the theater to see the newest entry in their favorite series. And while horror sequels often receive the ire of fans and critics — think "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2" or the completely unnecessary "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" — there are also sequels that equal or improved upon the original, like "Aliens" or "Evil Dead II....

Here’s hoping the most hilarious moments aren’t in the over-the-top, action-packed trailer for Warner Bros. Pictures’ Meg 2: The Trench. The stunts have a Fast and Furious feel – they are implausible yet impressive – and the plot surpasses the first film, The Meg (2018), in terms of megalodon encounters. In the original movie, Jason Statham battled a colossal sea creature, but in the sequel, there are not one, not two, but three Megs for Statham and crew to take on.
Statham’s joined in this wild adventure by Wu Jing, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels, and Cliff Curtis.
The original The Meg was directed by Jon Turteltaub, but it’s Ben Wheatley who takes over the reins for the sequel. The Meg‘s Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris wrote the screenplay, based on Steve Alten’s novel The Trench. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Belle Avery serve as producers,...

Jason Statham has found himself in shark-infested waters once again in the newly revealed trailer for Meg 2: The Trench. The follow-up to the outrageous 2018 aquatic action film arrives in theaters on August 4th.
The initial preview begins in a prehistoric era where the titular Megalodon swims at the top of the food chain, and after jumping 65 millions years ahead, it appears not much has changed. After Statham’s heroic rescue diver Jonas Taylor leads a team to the bottom of the ocean, the crew comes face-t0-face with a whole new host of monsters, including “the biggest Meg anyone’s ever seen.”
The stakes are certainly higher with Statham squaring off against multiple Megalodons, but the action star brings out a whole new level of brain-dead badassery by nearly sticking his foot in the belly of the beast to stop a charging Meg in its tracks. Watch the full trailer below.

Jason Statham comes face to face with not one, not two, but three deep sea-dwelling prehistoric sharks, along with some giant creature with a bunch of tentacles, in the first official trailer for “Meg 2: The Trench.”
Shortly after “The Meg” grossed $530 million worldwide in 2018, a sequel was confirmed. The original film followed a group of scientists whose submarine was attacked by a Megalodon — a species of giant shark previously thought to be extinct. Now, Warner Bros. has pulled back the curtain on the film after debuting its first trailer ahead of the movie’s Aug. 4 premiere.
The new footage unveils Statham teaming up with Wu Jing, a massive star in China who has starred in blockbusters such as “The Wandering Earth,” “Wolf Warrior” and “The Battle at Lake Changjin.” The pair lead an underwater journey to the bottom of the ocean to investigate new creatures, before taking on a...

The Film Gods observed the release of Jason Statham Takes On A Prehistoric Megalodon With His Bare Hands, aka "The Meg," back in 2018 and saw that it was good. Then, after years of waiting for updates, the Film Gods finally deigned to give their blessing to the production of what would eventually be called "Meg 2: The Trench" ... and we will see that this will most likely be good, too, especially if that early, dino-chomping footage screened during CinemaCon is any indication.

Warner Bros. debuted a first look at the upcoming shark attack sequel Meg 2: The Trench during CinemaCon today, and attendees seem to be pretty impressed with the footage.
Journalist Jeff Sneider tweets, “WB should just rename The Meg 2 to The Hit, because that’s what it’s gonna be. She’s hungry and back for seconds! Creatures have escaped an untouched, underwater ecosystem and are wreaking havoc in our world. Trailer is set to Barracuda.”
Eric Goldman adds, “… trailer for The Meg 2… begins with a Meg killing a dinosaur. They’re hunting in packs this time! Statham is fighting them! I’m so in!”
Rob Keyes writes, “Meg 2: The Trench trailer has the same over-the-top laughs and insanity as the first. The Megs are hunting in packs, there’s a dinosaur flashback, Jason Statham holds one back with his foot, there’s even a giant octopus or Kraken thing.

Remember when Warner Bros. promised us a horror-centric spin-off to "Aquaman" centered on the monsters of The Trench? Those were some good days, weren't they? Though sadly that project was canned and the future of Aquaman himself is in question — but not "Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom," don't worry — there is still hope for some big-budget aquatic horror, because the mighty Megalodon shark is back with "The Meg 2: The Trench," baby!
That's right, Jason Statham, Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy and the massive, humongous shark that gives the film its title are back for the second of hopefully many sequels — Steve Alten, who wrote the "Meg" book the film is based on, is still writing sequels to this day, the second of which is called, you guessed it, "The Trench." We sadly don't know much about the sequel, but we can grab a few hints from Alten's book,...

The Warner Bros. presentation at CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, is currently in progress, and as part of the presentation they showed attendees the first trailer for Meg 2: The Trench, director Ben Wheatley’s sequel to Jon Turteltaub’s 2018 “Jason Statham vs. a giant shark” movie The Meg (watch it at This Link).
JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray was in attendance to see the trailer, and this is what he had to say about it: “First trailer: We see footage of The Meg killing dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Looks much more expensive than the last movie. Jonas (Jason Statham) is sent into the trench the deal with whatever creature is down there – which of course is The Meg! Wu Jing, from Wolf Warrior, is a co-star. This version of The Meg is bigger because it’s an Apex predator. It escapes The Trench and starts eating people.

[The following story contains spoilers from the Snowfall series finale “The Struggle.”]
For six seasons, FX’s Snowfall explored how the crack cocaine epidemic contributed to the destruction of a community in South Central Los Angeles. The 1980s-set drama also touched on the intersections between the unfolding drug crisis and larger societal and geopolitical issues like the Iran-Contra affair and Cold War tensions between the CIA and Kgb.
But for its final episode, which aired Wednesday night, the series, co-created by the late John Singleton, ended in some ways as it began, with Damson Idris‘ Franklin Saint walking along a palm tree-lined street.
“For all of the show’s aspirations and its geopolitical reach, it started on the street with a kid who was full of potential in a neighborhood that was just a working-class neighborhood on a summer day,” showrunner Dave Andron tells The Hollywood Reporter of ending the series on Franklin. “And we always knew that the story,...
