Being part of a "loop group" is a coveted gig in the voice-acting world. Feature films and TV series alike use such performers."It's like an audio puzzle -- it's so fun!" says actor Erin Matthews. "We all pile into a large sound studio with the sound editor and the director. They have all the scenes cued up that need looping. Party scenes, restaurants, street scenes -- basically we're voicing the background artists in a given scene. They play the scene and use a laser pointer to point out any noticeable mouth flaps that they need, and the loop group coordinator 'casts' according to the various voices available."Improvisation skills are important, but loop-group actors may also be called on to do preparatory homework, according to actor Tara Platt. "Certain directors will have you watch the material in advance while others tell you the types of scenarios that will be looped.

A frozen Db is found at a construction site and we get to see Beckett (Stana Katic) getting ready for work, with her gun, watch and necklace with ring on it. Wearing her red coat and blue top (those being Superman's colours!) Castle (Nathan Fillion) arrived at the scene before even Esposito (Jon Heurtas) did. "My first cold case" he quips. Lanie (Tamala Jones) agrees with him, it's not funny but it's true. The Db wasn't there last night and Castle comments they may as well be looking for ruby slippers (those worn by Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.) Beckett adds the bit about the flying monkeys dumping her there. Castle comments on the killer's Mo: he froze her since he either wanted to keep her as a souvenir or he dumped the Db, Beckett concludes cos he didn't want to be reminded of her. They need to look...

Park, No RecreationThe logistics of working at smaller theatersActors who perform in L.A.-area theaters under the Actors' Equity Association 99-Seat Plan aren't going to get rich doing so. Yet, as they practice their craft, it's a happy occasion when there are certain comforts or amenities available along the way.But finding safe and convenient parking can be a challenge, particularly in areas like the North Hollywood theater district, where boulevard meters require payment up until 8 p.m. and side-street parking is scarce. Meters requiring money at night are now prevalent in other areas too, including many Hollywood neighborhoods. Some companies, such as Hollywood's Actors Co-op, the Sierra Madre Playhouse, and Pasadena's Theatre @ Boston Court provide free parking for audiences, actors, and other theater workers at or near the building. Macha Theatre in West Hollywood has limited free parking. Other situations vary widely. Yet, where there's a will, there's always a way.

When 39-year-old Louis Prima met 16-year-old Keely Smith in 1949 in a Las Vegas nightclub, it led to a passionate but ill-fated marriage and a long-lasting singing partnership. Their work influenced the evolution of pop musical styles -- jazz, swing, big band -- of the 1950s and beyond. Some say their collaboration marked the birth of the lounge-act craze.Flash forward to 2006 and another nightspot where another prodigious partnership emerged from a chance meeting. Actor-writer Vanessa Claire Smith, a member of L.A.'s Sacred Fools Theater Company, was preparing to move back to her home state of Louisiana following career disappointments. Shortly before her departure, she was waitressing at M Bar in Hollywood when actor Jake Broder performed his solo show Lord Buckley in Los Angeles. Smith had all but given up on her dream of playing Keely Smith in her long-planned bio-musical about the duo, but that night she...
