There are some people out there who will tell you the reason they like the "Saw" movies is because of the complex moral and ethical dilemmas they submerge their conflicted characters into. And that John Kramer, the most conflicted of them all, is among the most compelling villains in modern horror history -- if he's a true villain at all.
Well, I think everyone else is going to see heads smashed by blocks of ice and eyeballs sucked out of their sockets.
However you feel about the "Saw" movies, you can't deny that the decisive factor in their appeal is the blood, guts, and carnage. No good villain is ever truly gone, especially in horror movies. This September saw the return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer, a.k.a. “Jigsaw,” the trap-making serial killer of the Saw movies, with the release of Saw X. This is despite the fact that Kramer has been dead since the end of Saw III, which came out back in 2006. But a little thing like death never stopped the Saw franchise. Instead of literally bringing Kramer back from the dead, the subsequent sequels continued Bell’s participation with devices like flashbacks. Hell, even Saw IV played a trick on audiences by staging a lot of its action at the same time as Saw III.
One of those post-Kramer sequels celebrates its 15th anniversary this year: Saw V, which featured Costas Mandylor as Detective Mark Hoffman, a murderous cop who became Jigsaw’s protégé and continued his campaign of bloodshed.

Michael Su’s 2023 film, Bloodthirst, is about a vampire hunter who earns his bread slaying vampires in a post-apocalyptic world. This world is overrun by vampires and is controlled mainly by two factions, who are always at war. As for humans, they remain few in number. As a result, both factions of the blood-sucking beasts are on the brink of extinction, owing to both starvation and the growing threat of vampire hunters who’ll do anything to free this world from these demons. The vampires, on the flip side, often infiltrate human populations in large numbers to drain them of their blood and increase their numbers. As a fallout, they are in continuous dispute with their human counterparts. Those who’re lucky die, and those who aren’t, usually end up joining their flock. They aren’t like the usual vampires we see in the movies, who only poke at night to fill their bellies.

Bloodthirst is from the folks at Mahal Empire, last year they gave us their version of the zombie apocalypse, Bridge of the Doomed. This year they’re revisiting the apocalypse, only in Bloodthirst the threat comes from a different strain of the undead, vampires. Interestingly, both films were directed by Michael Su and written by Adrian Milnes this time with a story credit to Massimiliano Cerchi
In the world of Bloodthirst two factions of vampires fight for control of what’s left of the planet. What’s left of humanity is caught in the middle and rapidly heading for extinction, something that would doom the vampires as well. John Shepard walks that world as a vampire hunter who’s on the trail of The Master Vampire.

It’s hard to overstate just how big the “Saw” movies were in the 2000s. The original low-budget horror film is about a serial killer who forces his victims to mutilate themselves to survive his deathtraps was such a hit that every single year, a new sequel would come out for Halloween season. And every single year, it printed money.
But although the many “Saw” films rely on an easily repeatable premise, they’re not formulaic films. Indeed, they’re highly unusual in their scope and ambition, telling a multilayered story across many timelines simultaneously, with a vast mythology and a complex moral code. There’s a genuine ingenuity to most of the “Saw” movies that can take your breath away, whether you get wrapped up in its grotesque world or simply marvel at how ambitious it gets.
So let’s play a little game, and take a look at...

When you think of Sundance movies, you usually think of quirky, optimistic or melodramatic coming-of-age stories. Films like “Manchester by the Sea,” “Coda” or “The Big Sick.” But the movie that spawned the most successful franchise from its Sundance debut is none of those things. In January 2004, Sundance audiences were knocked on their collective butts by “Saw,” an out-of-nowhere horror flick from two unknown Australian filmmakers.
Director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell’s “Saw” offered a deceptively simple premise of two desperate men chained together in an empty room with little idea of how they got there or how to get out.
Starring Cary Elwes and Danny Glover, Monica Potter and a pre-“Lost” Michael Emerson, “Saw” inspired a new wave of grindhouse horror, films that reveled in old-school gore and a certain Rube Goldberg mentality to the kills beyond just attractive teenagers being picked off one by one.

In 2007, the "Saw" franchise took a very big swing with the aim of setting the movies up for years to come. Darren Lynn Bousman returned to the director's chair for the third time with "Saw IV," which aimed to move beyond Tobin Bell's John Kramer by giving Jigsaw a path forward without the man who started these twisted, bloody games in the first place. The film's ending not only offers one of the biggest twists in the entire series — but also one of the most important. Divorced of everything that came after, it was a big, bold, critical change in direction.

If it's Halloween, it must be "Saw." The franchise, first conceived by genre maestro James Wan and scribe Leigh Whannell, set the horror world ablaze. So much so, that by the time the fourth entry hit theaters in 2007, Lionsgate Films positioned the franchise as part and parcel of the Halloween season itself. Like Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger, franchise antagonist John Kramer, otherwise known as Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) became a horror icon. Often only heard in voiceover through the use of Billy the Puppet — an indelible piece of horror iconography — John Kramer radically subverted horror expectations.
John Kramer, dying from colon cancer, develops a series of tests for those he perceives as taking their lives for granted. He traps ostensible participants in deadly scenarios, forcing them to make difficult choices to survive. One of my favorite things about movies is how writers and directors can take the every day and use it to give us food for thought.
Locked In writer and director Carlos V. Gutierrez hopes to do that with his film.
Locked In is not entirely successful, but you'll be looking over your shoulder the next time you're in a storage facility.
Mena Suvari stars as Maggie, a pious woman raising her 17-year-old daughter, Tarin (Jasper Polish), alone.
Maggie's husband is in prison, which gives the devout character some wiggle room when dealing with seedy individuals and reminds her that the ultimate goal is survival.
In other words, morals be damned when it comes to protecting your family.
Maggie is a manager for a storage facility. It's a structure several stories high and a maze-like floorplan.
Right out of the gate, we learn that Maggie is struggling financially. She can't keep it together,...

Writer-director Carlos V. Gutierrez’s “Locked In” is not to be confused with 2017’s “Locked In,” nor 2010’s “Locked In,” nor the numerous short films that have also used that title in the past two decades. Nonetheless, this low-budget potboiler’s common moniker is emblematic of its generally generic nature. A thriller about a woman’s efforts to thwart a pair of criminals who come looking for their loot, it’s that prolongs what should have been a relatively brief incident. Its prospects may be better on VOD than in theaters when it opens via both platforms on May 7, but most will wisely sidestep it altogether.
Save for a few brief scenes, almost all of “Locked In” takes place in a steely, nondescript storage facility run by Lee (Bruno Bichir) and his sole employee Maggie (Mena Suvari), who’s introduced getting accidentally locked in a unit, which causes her to...

"I want my diamonds!!" Saban Films has released an official trailer for a high tech thriller titled Locked In, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Carlos V. Gutierrez. Another angry criminals thriller? Sure, why not. Mena Suvari and Jeff Fahey star in this heart-stopping, action-thriller Locked In, arriving in theaters + on VOD starting this May from Saban Films and Paramount. Directed by Carlos V. Gutierrez, Locked In follows a single mother who must protect her daughter and herself during a heist gone wrong at a high-tech storage facility. This also stars Manny Perez, Costas Mandylor, Bruno Bichir, and Jasper Polish. This looks like more direct-to-dvd junk, derivative and boring but maybe some will be entertained. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Carlos V. Gutierrez's Locked In, direct from Saban's YouTube: Mena Suvari and Jeff Fahey star in this heart-stopping,action-thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end.

"The question is: how are you still alive?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for an indie film titled Lazarus, another indie superhero flick about a man who gains special powers. "A super powered vigilante fights an organization to free a city from darkness." From filmmaker R.L. Scott and actor Sean Riggs, who also produced this. A man is killed, but his death is a brief affair. Upon regaining consciousness, he discovers he has been gifted with extraordinary powers that allow him to super-heroically fight the organization responsible for plunging his city into darkness. Sean Riggs stars as Lazarus, joined by Costas Mandylor, Shane Brolly, Nicki Micheaux, and Mya. This looks like it has some badass action scenes, and I really dig the red eyes when he has powers. "Protect the package!" Saban Films has unveiled an official trailer for a crime action thriller titled Night of the Sicario, formerly known as Blindsided. Cosmic Sin is an American sci-fi film starring Bruce Willis and Frank Grillo and directed by Edward Drake. In the year 2524, 400 years since humankind was able to colonise the cosmos, Cosmic Sin sees 7 soldiers part of a team governed by “The Alliance” who are attacked by a newly discovered civilization of forceful aliens. In the hopes of the human race not becoming extinguished and to stop a potential interstellar war, these soldiers launch a precautionary strike against them.
Co-written and directed by Edward Drake, and co-written by actor Corey Large (who also stars in the film as Bruce’s bff Dash), Cosmic Sin brings you action, aliens, impressive looking weapons, as well as some sarcastic and funny humour. What is lacking however is Bruce Willis’s presence as our lead character, despite his name being front and center of all the posters.

"What's the status of the Q-bomb?" Saban Films has released an official trailer for an epic sci-fi adventure called Cosmic Sin, another strange "where did this come from?!" creation from the same filmmaker behind Broil and Breach previously. "There is always some theoretical fighter who thinks he can take on the pros." Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for a Mma fighter film titled Born a Champion, from French filmmaker Alex Ranarivelo. The film is co-written by and stars actor Sean Patrick Flanery as Mickey Kelly, one of the first American black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Set in the 1990s, the film follows Mickey as he finds himself pulled into an unsanctioned Mma tournament in the hopes of providing for his family. The full cast also includes Dennis Quaid, Katrina Bowden, Currie Graham, Costas Mandylor, Maurice Compte, Reno Wilson, and Ali Afshar. This has all the usual fight film tropes, and doesn't seem to be unique at all especially with the military subplot, but it does look like Flanery is giving one hell of a performance at least.
