Netflix has tied up a deal in the $34M range for the John Lee Hancock-directed package Monsanto, we can reveal. The pic will star Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie and Oscar winner Laura Dern.
CAA Media Finance cut the presale after launching with Rocket Science last week. Netflix has been quieter at recent markets but is back at the table with the splashy deal.
This and Apple’s WW deal for Everest sherpa pic Tenzing are the two biggest deals to emerge from the Cannes market so far. The latter is understood to be in the $40M range.
Monsanto tells the true story of young, untried attorney Brent Wisner (Powell), who takes on a seemingly insurmountable case against the giant U.S. chemical company Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson (Mackie) who used Monsanto’s best-known product Roundup, a wildly financially successful weed and grass pesticide killer, as part...

Transitioning the naturalistic comic sensibilities that made Better Things a success, Pamela Adlon’s feature debut Babes manages to co-opt the rhythms of a romantic comedy to explore the relationship between two best friends at opposite points of their lives.
Eden and Dawn (Michelle Buteau) have been friends for 27 years. Married with one child and another on the way, Dawn seemingly has her life together, whereas Eden runs a yoga studio out of her apartment and doesn’t imagine settling down anytime soon. After an opening that sees Dawn go into labor during a ritual Thanksgiving-morning movie, Eden has a meet-cute with charismatic actor Claude (Stephan James). One midnight subway ride and sexual encounter later, Eden finds herself pregnant and staring down raising a baby alone. With her pregnancy she begins to increasingly lean on Dawn, who struggles with her husband Marty (Hasan Minhaj) to raise two children and balance a career.

Google is strengthening advertising ties with major media companies amid a broader push into ad-supported streaming.
In a presentation kicking off the NewFronts in New York, Google execs gave Hollywood a significant spotlight. The tech giant announced a number of partnerships with companies using its Display & Video 360 tools, including Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global.
Google also announced that it is one of the first partners to directly integrate into Disney’s Real-time Ad Exchange, or Drax. ” Kristen O’Hara, VP, Agency, Platforms & Client Solutions at Google, emceed the NewFront and recapped the day’s announcements in a blog post. Joe Manganiello recently said that he’s always “on the lookout for a good werewolf script” because he feels he has some unfinished business from his days of playing a werewolf on HBO series True Blood – but while we wait to see if and when he’s going to end up making a werewolf movie, Deadline reports that he has signed on to star in and produce a zombie thriller called Mountain Man.
Mountain Man is based on a series of novels written by Keith C. Blackmore. There are currently three books in that series, so if the movie is well-received there is some franchise potential here.
John Lee, whose previous credits include False Positive and Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, is set to direct the film from a screenplay by Matt Deller. Mountain Man will tell the story of Gus, a lonely post-apocalyptic survivor facing isolation and the...

Keith C. Blackmore’s book series Mountain Man is headed to the screen, with Deadline reporting today that Joe Manganiello (“True Blood”) is on board to star in the film adaptation.
The actor will also produce the upcoming zombie movie.
“Mountain Man tells the story of Gus, a lonely post-apocalyptic survivor facing isolation and the ever-present specter of a zombie attack, who struggles with alcohol abuse and suicidal thoughts until he discovers another survivor, a captivating woman who poses another threat altogether.”
John Lee (False Positive) will direct Mountain Man from a script by Matt Deller.
“John is a brilliant creative mind. We’ve been looking for the right thing to do together since we filmed Pee Wee’s Big Holiday and it’s finally here,” 3:59’s Joe and Nick Manganiello told Deadline. “Very excited to get to work on such weird, wild project with him.”

Los Angeles City Councilman John Lee is facing accusations today from the city Ethics Commission of violating governmental ethics laws by accepting and failing to report excessive gifts, including some received during a trip to Las Vegas in 2017 that he took along with former Councilman Mitch Englander.
In 2020. Englander pleaded guilty and was sentenced to federal prison for lying to federal investigators looking into his alleged receipt of excessive cash and gifts. Lee served as Englander’s chief of staff prior to being elected to the City Council.
“In 2016 and 2017, including during a 2017 trip to Las Vegas, Lee accepted multiple gifts from a businessperson and a developer, most of which exceeded the gift limit,” maintains a statement from the city Ethics Commission. “Lee failed to publicly disclose those gifts on the California statement of economic interests (Form 700) that he was required to file when he left city service, and he...

Back in 2010, screenwriter director Lee Jeong-beom's “The Man from Nowhere” which starred Won Bin, was the highest grossing film in South Korea. Best known for its amazing and thrilling action sequences, the film had fans longing for more from Lee. Therefore it is not really a surprise that he would follow it up with yet another action thriller that featured even more spectacular action but with a similar theme.

The late, great comedian Paul Reubens first started developing his popular Pee-wee Herman character while working for the Groundlings, a comedy troupe in Los Angeles. They famously encouraged comedians to invent wild, outsize characters that would provide comedy in any situation they entered. Reubens' Pee-wee character caught the attention of the local -- then the national -- comedy scene, leading to a long-running live show. Eventually, Pee-wee became the star of three feature films. Tim Burton's "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" was released in 1985, Randal Kleiser's "Big Top Pee-wee" was released in 1988, and John Lee's "Pee-wee's Big Holiday" was released on Netflix in 2016.
The third of those films came after Reubens had experienced multiple career highs and lows, having starred in a hit TV series, then having retreated from the public eye in the 1990s because of a very public arrest. Reubens returned to film in a big way...

A movie about a pair of unlikely friends teaming up to infiltrate a cult is always going to rest on two things: the friends having chemistry and the cult being interesting. You’d really prefer to have both of those elements working for you, but a filmmaker can get by as long as one of them is strong. Unfortunately for everyone involved, “God Is a Bullet” has neither.
Nick Cassavetes’ adaptation of Boston Teran’s novel of the same name is an ambitious mess that features wild highs (a snake doing meth!) and impossibly dull lows (most everything else). Overly long and gratuitously violent, the bloated revenge thriller seems obsessed with reminding us of how much evil is in the world without showing the slightest bit of interest in explaining how it got there.

Revenge thrillers tend to be most effective when they’re lean and mean. Such is definitely not the case with the new film from writer-director Nick Cassavetes, his first since 2014’s The Other Woman. Based on Boston Teran’s well-received 1999 novel, God Is a Bullet squanders its provocative premise with a ridiculously bloated running time (155 minutes, and you feel every one of them) and gratuitous violence that lends a cartoonish sheen to a story aspiring to gritty realness. Despite its talented cast, who demonstrate a willingness to go for broke in their portrayals, the film comes across like a pretentious version of an ‘80s-era Charles Bronson actioner.
Actually, Bronson would have been perfect for the role of detective Bob Hightower (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), whose ex-wife and her new husband are brutally murdered by the members of a cult who seemed to have watched The Hills Have Eyes too many times. In...

The once vibrant Hong Kong film industry is struggling to recover from the effects of Covid and related problems, a local report has warned.
The report identified problems with theatrical box office, local production, co-production with mainland China and film investment.
The Motion Picture Industry Association and Hong Kong Box Office Ltd. regular half year report showed that cinemas in the city had been closed for 104 days this year, including Chinese New Year and Easter, both normally peak periods. Capacity restrictions remain in place as city authorities waver between trying to reopen the economy and a ‘dynamic zero’ Covid policy.
Actual cinema revenues in the first six month were little changed at HK357 million (45.5 million), compared with HK376 million (47.9 million). But only because the first half of 2021 was similarly affected by restrictions and cinemas were only open for 48 days.

If you've read my work on Daily Dead or listened to my ramblings on the Corpse Club podcast, then you might be aware of my deep love for Dance of the Dead, Gregg Bishop's midnight movie masterpiece that blended prom, zombies, and the music of Pat Benatar (via a great cover) into one of the most memorable rentals I ever enjoyed from Blockbuster. When I saw that Joe Ballarini, the screenwriter of Dance of the Dead, had written a new book (for children and adults) called A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting, I knew that I had to talk with him about it, and I recently had the great pleasure of doing just that.

Director John Lee seems, at first, to be an odd fit for a Pee-wee Herman movie. A quick note: my computer finally gave up the ghost last week, and I’ve spent the past five or so days scrambling to get back up and running. I’ve never gone this long without posting at HitFix, not since we began the site, and it’s a disconcerting feeling to just watch pop culture flow by without having the tools be part of the conversation. It’s amazing how ingrained it is at this point, and even when I’m working as hard as I can, I still always feel like there’s more that I’d like to write and publish than I’m able to actually accomplish. Case in point: I was hoping to publish this review last Friday night after my sons joined me and my girlfriend for an evening built around the Netflix premiere of Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday, directed by John Lee. "Didn't you ever wonder what life is like outside Fairville?" "Nope. You know I don't want to go anywhere, or try anything new!" Netflix has debuted the first trailer for the return of Pee-wee Herman, played by Paul Reubens, titled Pee-wee's Big Holiday. This is the first real Pee-wee movie since Big Top Pee-wee in 1988 and Pee-wee's Big Adventure in 1985, so this has been a long time in the making. In this new movie, Pee-wee decides to leave his home town and go on adventure in search of actor Joe Manganiello (seen in Magic Mike Xxl, What to Expect When You're Expecting), who shows up to get a milkshake at the start. This looks like it should be quite fun, especially if you're a fan of Pee-wee that has been awaiting his return. Here's the first official trailer for John Lee's Pee-wee's Big Holiday, direct from Netflix's YouTube: In Pee-wee's Big Holiday,...

Pee-wee Herman, the delightfully chirpy man-child that he is, hatches a plan for a grand adventure in the first full-length trailer for Netflix’s feature, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday.
Having portrayed the character for more than 30 years, Paul Reubens is practically synonymous with the childlike Pee-wee, and today’s snippet only showcases more of that signature, innocent charm. The remainder of the cast will be rounded out by Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike Xxl), Alia Shawkat and Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Stephanie Beatriz.
As the title suggests, Big Holiday will see Reubens’ character finally journey beyond the idyllic borders of Fairville. Buoyed by his newfound confidence – thanks in no part to Manganiello’s devilishly handsome stranger – he sets out on an impromptu road trip, crossing paths with angry bank robbers along the way.

"You know I don't want to go anywhere or try anything new!" Pee-wee Herman (Paul Reubens) declares in the trailer for his new Netflix movie, "Pee-wee's Big Holiday." Well, Joe Manganiello has something to say about that.
The "Magic Mike" star plays a super cool, motorcycle-riding, chocolate milkshake-drinking guy who blows into town and challenges Pee-wee to leave it. "You have a choice to make: Stick around here or live a little." Pee-wee decides to live a little, and embarks on an epic road trip, filled with zany misadventures and colorful characters.
It's been nearly 30 years since the last Pee-wee movie, and director John Lee has said that this one has "very little plot," which is for the best. It's more about seeing how Pee-wee interacts with new environments, like New York City, Amish country, and the woods, and with the variety of people he meets along the way.

It's been nearly 30 years since the last Pee-wee movie, and director John Lee has said that this one has "very little plot," which is for the best. It's more about seeing how Pee-wee interacts with new environments, like New York City, Amish country, and the woods, and with the variety of people he meets along the way.

It's been 30 years since Paul Reubens' Pee-wee Herman had his first big-screen journey in "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," and now, decades later, he's back with "Pee-wee's Big Holiday." While we're living in an era of nostalgia-driven reboots, they haven't always panned out (see last weekend's "Zoolander 2"), but it seems the filmmakers here are keeping things simple and not trying to stir up the formula too much. “It always seems best when Pee-wee has very little plot — his movies probably have the least plot in the history of cinema," director John Lee told USA Today. "Why not embrace that?" The much-belated, Netflix-exclusive third Pee-Wee Herman film finally began shooting on Monday. And just in case you still doubted it was happening, Paul Reubens has posted the first still from Pee-Wee's Big Holiday on his blog. The pic, as you can see, shows an older but probably not wiser Pee-Wee in the passenger seat of a car. That, and Reubens / Pee-Wee's description of the journey so far, sadly seems to indicate he's left his beloved bicycle at home on this occasion. Well, he wouldn't want to lose it again."Wow, am I tired!" runs the caption. "Just finished the second day of filming. Hitchhiked yesterday all day. Got a ride, hitchhiked some more, then got another ride. A lot of travelling in two days!"John Lee is the director, with long-time Pee-Wee fan Judd Apatow producing.“Judd and I dreamt up this movie four years ago,” said Reubens back in February.
