What do we want from a spinoff? More time with a favorite supporting character, as with Frasier or Better Call Saul? An expansion of a compelling mythos, as with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or House of the Dragon? Or perhaps a deeper exploration of some potent themes, as with Rugrats offshoot All Grown Up?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff Angel fulfilled all of those criteria and more.
Premiering in 1999, with its first four seasons running concurrently with Buffy, Angel’s eponymous hero was a reformed vampire, the ex-lover of his parent show’s titular Slayer. The spinoff imported several other characters from Buffy, transplanting them from the small town milieu of Sunnydale to the sinister sprawl of Los Angeles, a darker, more complex setting where demons and vampires rubbed shoulders with high powered lawyers and politicians. It occupied an interesting position in the cultural landscape, airing alongside shows like...

Bringing the beloved character of the caffeine-obsessed bookworm Rory Gilmore to life in the cult dramedy "Gilmore Girls," Alexis Bledel captured the hearts of legions of viewers in the early aughts. Over the years, her quick-witted, fast-talking iconic role has only gained more popularity as the show reached global audiences when it landed on Netflix. That eventually led to a 2016 four-part revival, "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life." The reboot further cemented Amy Sherman-Palladino's brainchild as a quintessential nostalgia watch. Bledel has since appeared in several movies and shows, including her Emmy-winning portrayal of Emily Malek in the highly acclaimed drama "The Handmaid's Tale" and her role in the forever-beloved Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series.

The live-action Titans series has been flawed from the get-go by presenting us with a Dick Grayson that the writers woefully misunderstand. There is no comic book creator who ever depicted Grayson in this manner so it sets the wrong tone. Its low-budget when created for the short-lived DC Universe streaming service didn’t help.
And yet, it has staggered through three seasons, with a fourth now streaming on HBO Max. Just last week, Warner Home Entertainment released Titans: The Complete Third Season on Blu-ray (no DVD or 4K).

Not too many series make it to five seasons and those that do often feel like they've run out of gas by the time they get there. It's incredibly rare for a show's final season to be its best and yet, that's somehow the case with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spinoff, "Angel." After a strong, but largely episodic freshman outing, the series evolved into a truly great show in its 2nd and 3rd seasons, expanding on Angel's own mythology and exploring the complexities of what it means to fight an unwinnable battle. Things fell apart with season 4, which, despite having its moments, was far too serialized for its own good and also suffered from creatives whose focus was majorly split.
"Angel" is all about redemption, so what better season could there be than the one in which the show redeems itself? Thanks to a major paradigm shift, the spinoff returned revitalized for its fifth season,...

Much like its parent show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" relied heavily on metaphor. However, while "Buffy" dealt with the high school experience, only truly going dark in its later seasons, "Angel" always sought to tell more adult-oriented stories. The spin-off never quite reached the same heights of the original, but it came pretty damn close, and there are certain aspects of the series that were even stronger. For one, just about every character who made the jump from "Buffy" to "Angel" was the better for it. Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), Wesley (Alexis Denisof), Faith (Eliza Dushku), and Darla (Julie Benz) all went from being relatively one-dimensional, to becoming some of the best characters in the entire Buffyverse. Even Harmony (Mercedes McNab) was vastly improved.
Perhaps the biggest revelation was Angel (David Boreanaz) himself. A broody hunk who was far more interesting when he actually went evil, Buffy's former beau was...

If you spent any time observing the chaos of the Sterling Cooper offices, then it's probably hard to look at Jon Hamm and not immediately flashback to his days as the suave ad-man with a laundry list of issues. Over the course of seven seasons, "Mad Men" tangled with the impossible task of unpacking the inner life of Don Draper, who proved to be an alcoholic, a serial womanizer, a terrible father, an even worse husband, an abusive boss ... and yet, a sympathetic character.
The magic of "Mad Men" was multifaceted — partially a product of series creator Matthew Weiners's writing and directing, but also successful in a way that wouldn't have been possible without many brilliant performance from the likes of Hamm and his former co-stars, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, January Jones, Christina Hendricks, and Kiernan Shipka, to name a few. With all that hard work combined, "Mad Men" has...

Although "Mad Men" was a show that paid a lot of attention to detail, it did mess up on occasion. For instance, the writing on the sign on the Sterling Cooper building in the early seasons is in the Gil Sans font, a font that was not in popular use until the seventies! Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder. But for the most part, it's a show that successfully immerses its viewers in the crazy world of the sixties, with the clothes, slang, furniture, and the characters' values all consistently era-appropriate.
That pursuit of full immersion extended into the casting of the extras on the show, who also needed to look like believable upper-class people of the time. This created some problems for the casting directors, because it was often hard to find suitable actors in Los Angeles who met showrunner Matthew Weiner's particular standards.

Rob Schroeder’s sci-fi-tinged debut feature nests a lot of plots inside but doesn’t really add them up
A nocturnal traveller caught in a freaky menage a trois; an isolated mistress to a powerful senator; a technician in an experimental facility who seems to feed lines to characters in the other dramas. Rob Schroeder’s sci-fi-tinged feature debut expends much effort arranging these nested realities in a furiously scrambled film that makes you feel like you’re the test subject in Inception’s dream machine – and one who’s sniffed a few tubes of Bostik before bedtime. It’s a brave storyteller’s gambit, but there’s something finally underwhelming and convoluted about Ultrasound once it deigns to join the dots.

Elsewhere, a young woman, Katie, is feeling emotionally weighed down by a secret romantic arrangement that feels like a textbook case of gaslighting. And at the same time, in a nondescript research facility, medical professional Shannon begins questioning her role in a bizarre experiment, fearing that she’s doing more harm than good."

1. “Bridgerton” Season 2 (available March 25)
Why Should I Watch? Shondaland’s hit period drama returns in March with a second season focused on Lord Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), the eldest of the high-society family’s offspring, who’s searching for his ideal partner. But Anthony’s idea of the perfect bride has little to do with true love, even though his standards remain astronomically high, so when he sets his sights on Edwina (Charithra Chandran), her sister Kate (Simone Ashley) does everything she can to nix the ill-fated romance. Get ready for a heated love triangle sure to set fire to a few of fancy gowns.
Bonus Reason: “Bridgerton” was nominated for 12 Emmys in its first well-received season, and Netflix reported the hourlong soap netted enough viewers to rank as the streamer’s second most-watched series of all time. Still, questions linger about the show’s long-term viability. Breakout star Regé-Jean Page...

"We are doing true good here, Shannon, don't lose sight of that." Magnolia Pictures has revealed the first trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller titled Ultrasound, made by producer Rob Schroeder making his feature directorial debut. This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and it also played at the Fantasia Film Festival last fall. The synopsis is incredibly vague: After his car breaks down, Glen spends one hell of an odd night with a married couple, setting into motion a chain of events that alter their lives... "Brilliantly constructed and meticulously detailed, [the film] gradually destabilizes the viewer's processing of the reality it presents, with a control that is as uncommon as it is remarkable... Textured with all kinds of clever subtleties, the film plays with its audience in revealing its mysteries, always keeping several steps ahead." Starring Vincent Kartheiser, Chelsea Lopez, Breeda Wool Tunde Adebimpe, Chris Gartin, plus Rainey Qualley. From...

The sci-fi thriller follows Glen (Vincent Kartheiser), who is stranded by two flat tires on a rainy night and must seek help at a nearby house. There, he’s welcomed in by Art (Bob Stephenson), who cajoles him into sleeping with his younger wife Cyndi (Chelsea Lopez). Glen’s unease only escalates when, a short time later, the consequences of this strange night begin to spiral out of control. Glen and Cyndi soon find themselves at the center of a web of deception and manipulation that tests the foundations of reality.
Ultrasound made its world premiere at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival and recently went on to screen at Fantasia Fest, where it won the Silver Audience Award.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Season 3 finale of Titans, “Purple Rain.” So if you haven’t caught up, first, maybe examine your priorities. And then come back and check it out.] After a wickedly inventive and emotionally packed season that saw the Titans heading to Gotham City to battle both DC Comics villains Jonathan Crane (Vincent Kartheiser) and the Red Hood—fallen Titan Jason Todd (Curran Walters), who was drugged into killing Hank Hall (Alan Ritchson) with an explosive device—the often-fractious superteam got it together and brought these two monsters to justice. Or at least the Gotham version of justice, with a repentant Todd run out of town and Crane locked back up at Arkham Asylum with just a headful of horrifying memories to drive him mad. HBO Max Along the way, Dick reunited with former Batgirl-turned-Gotham Pd Commissioner Barbara Gordon (Savannah Welch), the late Donna Troy (Conor Leslie) returned from the great beyond and we...

It's becoming challenging to root for Dick.
Titans Season 3 Episode 11 put his worst traits on full display, and while it's understandable he didn't want anyone to be harmed in the scuffle with Red Hood, he needed to understand that the team needs to be united to face this threat.
When you have someone in a position of power, you need to be at ease with their decisions, and Dick always seems to be going rogue these days, leading me to believe Titans Season 3 will wrap with a new leader of the superhero group.
Going into battle with Red Hood, he did have plenty of weapons at his disposal, but he failed to realize just how much the citizens of Gotham are anti-Titans, and that could be his ultimate undoing.
I believe Jason wanted Dick to kill him. It would put him out of his pain, and, well, the kid has...

The 2021 Fantasia Film Festival wrapped a little over a week ago now, and today I’ve got a pair of reviews on tap from the fest that feature two truly audacious genre-bending projects that I highly recommend fans keep an eye out for in the coming months. So, read on to check out my thoughts on Phil Tippett’s stop-motion masterpiece Mad God and the twisty-turny sci-fi thriller Ultrasound from Rob Schroeder.
Mad God: A film 30 years in the making, Phil Tippett’s Mad God is truly a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience that I’d liken to meeting the maniacal and menacing love child of Ray Harryhausen, Hieronymus Bosch, and The City of Lost Children. Like an esoteric descent into the deepest, darkest pits of hell, Mad God is a haunting journey highlighting the atrocities of war, the drain of capitalism, and the danger of politics as it follows a...

As the new school year begins, Netflix is making the documentary The Social Dilemma available for free on YouTube, through the end of September. After just a couple of days, it’s recorded over 63,000 views, with one viewer commenting, “Literally one of the best and worthy documentaries I have ever watched in my life.”
Television Academy voters have proven similarly enthusiastic. The documentary directed and co-written by Jeff Orlowski, produced by Larissa Rhodes, and edited and co-written by Davis Coombe earned seven Emmy nominations, more than any other single film.
“We were totally speechless and really not expecting any of them, let alone seven of them,” Rhodes tells Deadline of the nominations. “For this team, we just felt hugely proud and humbled by that response and that recognition.”

If you thought Titans would stop for a beat following Hank's death, then Titans Season 3 Episode 4 should have proven you wrong.
Titans is telling very intricate storylines on Titans Season 3 that are more balanced than the previous two seasons, so it was a surprising decision to ship Dawn off to Paris.
Both Hank and Dawn have been treated as afterthoughts by the writers for a while now, so taking Dawn out of the equation was inevitable.
Still, it would have been much more intriguing to see how she copes following the loss of the love of her life, and of course, how she comes to terms with the guilt of detonating the bomb attached to his chest.
Titans has always struggled to serve all of its characters, probably explaining why Rachel and Donna are still not back.
It's hard not to feel a little short-changed at the way Dawn was written out of the story,...

Vincent Kartheiser was the subject of multiple investigations for his behavior on the set of Season 3 of the HBO Max series “Titans,” Variety has confirmed.
Kartheiser was cast as the villain Jonathan Crane, a.k.a Scarecrow, in the third season of the DC superhero show earlier this year. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Kartheiser was first the subject of a complaint for what was described as making inappropriate comments onset. Wbtv’s Labor Relations department investigated and found that his actions did not warrant being fired from the show but did warrant corrective action.
A second complaint was made some time later, which led Wbtv to assign a representative to keep an eye on activities on the set. Due to Covid protocols, interviews were conducted virtually by the Burbank-based investigators.
Reps for Wbtv declined to comment.
“Vincent Kartheiser vehemently denies the allegations,” a spokesperson for the actor said.

Even though the current president doesn’t weaponize Twitter the same way that his predecessor did, Jeff Orlowski wants people to know that social media is still further polarizing the country. “Each and every one of us has a different Twitter or a different Facebook, that’s being personalized and customized to my experience just to keep me on the platform,” Orlowski tells Gold Derby in our Meet the Experts: Documentary and Nonfiction panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). Seeing how social media has further isolated us as a society and help to prop up things like Covid disinformation and conspiracies that resulted in the riot at the Capitol on January 6th has left Orlowski with a pretty stark take on things. “I fundamentally do believe that this technology is incompatible with a healthy and functioning democracy.”

It's been a long road, but Titans Season 3 is less than a week from touching down at its new home on HBO Max.
The transition has been a smooth process, and the look of the show remains a cut above the other superhero shows, so that's a major positive.
But the transition to Gotham City comes at a huge cost to the tone of the show. The series has typically embraced the darkness, but there has always been a comedic lick of humor that allowing for witty one-liners.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Titans Season 3.
After watching five episodes, they are the darkest in the series' history, and the drama rarely stops long enough for the heroes to breathe or share a laugh or two. It's all about moving on to the next plot.
If anything, it highlights the nature of Gotham City to a T, so if...

The “Titans” trailer for its long-awaited third season features the introduction of the show’s three new characters, and a return to one very famous city.
The DC Comics series, which moved from DC Universe to HBO Max, will premiere its third season on Aug. 12.
The third season features Curran Walters, who plays Jason Todd (aka the second Robin after Dick Grayson hangs up the mantle to become Nightwing), become his more villainous alter-ego Red Hood, who wants to take over Gotham following the apparent retirement of Batman (Iain Glen). The trailer also shows the first look at Savannah Welch’s Barbara Gordon as well as (the voice of) Vincent Kartheiser’s Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow.
Additionally, Jay Lycurgo will appear as Tim Drake, the third different Robin. He is briefly spotted in the trailer, which you can watch above.
