Despite what you may think, Memorial Day isn’t just a day off work or an occasion for a good storewide mattress sale. The ostensible purpose of this federal holiday, of course, is to remember the sacrifice of those who have died while serving in our country’s five armed services branches: the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy—all of which continue to suffer great losses performing their duties around the globe.
The experiences of servicemen and servicewomen have served as the basis of countless movies and TV shows over the years, in all sorts of different forms. But the most powerful of these are the ones based upon actual journalistic accounts from real-life soldiers. So in advance of Memorial Day on Monday, here are five military-themed indies we love…

AnnaSophia’s Perspective on Height and Perception
“Everyone always says that guys are intimidated by me,” she told Teen Vogue in 2013, “but I seriously doubt it. I mean, I’m five-foot-nothing!”
“I think I must make a stank face,” she joked. “I loved high school,” AnnaSophia added.
“Everyone always asks me if the other kids treated me differently because of my career, but they didn’t. If you act weird, people are going to treat you weird, but if you’re just yourself, people respond to that.

Although Stephen King is the undisputed leader of horror fiction, along with other contemporary authors such as Clive Barker, Ann Rice, and Dan Simmons, the American King of Horror is also a great connoisseur of film and television.
In fact, live-action adaptations of Stephen King's work have been around for nearly 50 years, and King has personally worked on or been involved in the production of several of them. His love of movies and shows is second only to that of another master of the horror genre, Guillermo del Toro, who often boasts of his encyclopedic knowledge of cinema.
As a result, King himself is not shy about sharing his own discoveries in the world of cinema and television, regularly posting reviews or simple observations on social platforms about what he has recently seen and what particularly impressed him.

Image created by “Shutterstock.AI” When Emile Hirsch starred as the title character in 2008’s Speed Racer, he felt confident that he’d be in a blockbuster movie. After all, with the Wachowskis directing, the beloved kids’ cartoon was going to get a state-of-the-art makeover that combined live action with brand-new CGI effects. So Hirsch was perplexed when the movie was generally panned by critics and shunned by audiences. Over the years, though, people have slowly come around to realizing that the movie was ahead of its time, and it’s now become a cult classic. A big part of that re-evaluation came from the innovative techniques that created Speed Racer’s vibrant, cartoonish look, though Hirsch once told us that was the most challenging part of making the movie in the first place. If there’s ever a movie from the late 2000s deserving of its reevaluation, might we thrust Speed Racer to the front? A dizzying piece of pop that zooms like an acid trip through the world of racing and anime, the movie just did not connect with audiences…outside of those actively under a certain kind of influence, at least. To say it went under the radar – taking in $44 million domestically on a $120 million budget – would be an understatement, but it has gained a lot traction in the 15+ years since its release, taking on a cult status that was sort of always there underneath the rubble.
Speed Racer star Emile Hirsch is well aware of the movie’s modern reception, although it does remind him of its flop at the box office. “When it came out, it was unanimously dogged…I remember we were all like, ‘Man, this movie is so good.

Very sad news today as it’s been reported that M. Emmet Walsh has died at the age of 88. No matter the size of the role, the prolific character actor always made a unique impression throughout his long career, which spanned six decades.
M. Emmet Walsh is best known for playing Bryant in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, the captain of the Los Angeles Police Department who tasks Deckard with tracking down the replicants at the beginning of the film. He told THR that the cast and crew weren’t quite sure what the make of the movie when they first saw it. “I don’t know if I really understood what in the hell it was all about,” Walsh said. “We all sat there and it ended. And nothing. We didn’t know what to say or to think or do! We didn’t know what in the hell we had done!

Actor Ryan Phillippe shared his experience on the set of his new action thriller film Prey.
Phillippe revealed what about the film he originally connected with. “The idea of being on this plane that goes down in a reserve, for big prey, for big game, it just captured my imagination pretty immediately,” Phillippe told uInterview founder Erik Meers, who first interviewed the actor for the cover of Paper magazine in 2001.
He continued, “You know, I like survival movies, and I felt like this was one where any of us could put ourselves in that situation, mentally, and it’s terrifying, you know, and so it was a really easy sell in regards to what the idea of the movie was, and I like that a lot of times, I think that in its simplicity there is relatability to that because you can imagine what if it happened to you, or whatever.

Emile Hirsch is a very capable actor. He’s done amazing work in films like Freaks and Killer Joe, so he is, let’s say, the kind of person a beleaguered film critic might take a chance on even when he’s appearing in the kind of film they’d normally avoid. This particular critic reminded this critic of why that rule was in place, but also of how the best actors are capable of salvaging something even in the worst situations.

Last October, it was revealed that the film will be called Final Destination: Bloodlines… and now cinematographer Christian Sebaldt has shared an image that indicates Final Destination: Bloodlines will be heading into production soon! A trailer for Prey has just arrived online – and no, we’re not talking about that Predator movie that was just released a while back. This is a new movie called Prey, which Vertical will be giving a theatrical and VOD release on March 15th. “We had an opportunity to take the name of a beloved genre film brand, one we feel a personal connection to, for our new company,” says Zambeck. “This is a new venture, unaffiliated with any previous incarnations. We aim to honor the history and spirit of the past as we look for interesting films that break the mold, and will be discovered by new generations for years to come.”
In Lionsgate’s acquisition of Starz in December 2016, the studio absorbed the North American branches of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The Anchor Bay Entertainment trademark was up for acquisition so Zambeck and Katz took the opportunity to acquire it. The new Anchor Bay Entertainment doesn’t include the previous label’s library.

"You're mistaking dreams for memories..." "These aren't dreams." Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for the film State of Consciousness, a mysterious psychological thriller from filmmaker Marcus Stokes. This already premiered at a film festival in Italy a few years ago and was released in Italy last year, though is only now opening in the US - starting in March for those curious. Nightmares & reality are indistinguishable to Stephen when he is forced to take medication for a psychological disorder he doesn't have. To regain his sanity and get back to his normal life, he sets out to escape from the institution he has been trapped in. As usual, he begins to realize the truth is more frightening than anything he could imagine. Directed by Marcus Stokes, this stars Emile Hirsch as Stephen, Tatjana Nardone, Kesia Elwin, Robin Mugnani, David Wurawa, and Michael E. Rodgers. Yet another Matrix rip-off stuffed into a psychological thriller?...

Another Lionsgate movie is headed to Netflix, marking the first time it’s been available on an SVOD service. The Re-Education of Molly Singer drops on Netflix in the United States on February 5th, 2024.
Ty Simpkins and Jaime Pressly (My Name is Earl) headline the cast of the R-rated comedy movie that’s about attorney Molly Singer, who is on the verge of being fired and the only way to save her job is by re-enrolling at her old alma mater and re-experience college. Also starring in the movie are Nico Santos, Cierra Ramirez, Holland Roden, and Wendie Malick.
For the most part, Lionsgate theatrical movies head to Starz in the first window as outlined by a deal struck back in 2021. However, over the past year, we’ve seen some of the smaller movies head to Netflix in that first window. It began back in July 2023 with the...

Emile Hirsch, the actor who rose to fame with movies like The Girl Next Door, and Into the Wild, has been missing in action over the past few years. Well, he has been making some films, but they are not as good as the ones I just mentioned. Hirsch acts like Leonardo DiCaprio, and I have seen the news that they are friends, so there should be no problem. But DiCaprio should avoid seeing Hirsch’s new film Walden, where it looks like he is doing a DiCaprio impression, almost mocking his intense look and insulting his intelligence. Walden is a story about Walden Dean, a devout Christian and a stenographer at the Georgia District Court who works under Judge Boyle. Walden gets news that he is suffering from a brain tumor, and this sparks a change in his mundane life, and he resolves to kill all those who he thinks have escaped justice.

Emile Hirsch plays a violent cop who finds his way into the mafia in a film whose devotion to Martin Scorsese’s classic runs through every frame
This 70s-set based-on-a-truish-story crime drama about an undercover cop embedded with mobsters was originally released in the US as The Gemini Lounge; for some reason it’s been retitled Inside Man for the UK, but on no account should it be confused with either the excellent Spike Lee-directed heist movie from 2006 or the recent Netflix show starring David Tennant. And while it merely borrows the title of better made movies, there’s something almost superfan-stalkerish about this film’s relationship to Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas. It’s not a remake in any way and revolves around totally different characters and a different plot, but it somehow does a cheap karaoke version of GoodFellas’ rhythms, phrasing, look and general vibe.
This runs through every element here,...

Plot: Walden Dean an unassuming court stenographer in a small southern town, when he discovers he is dying, he decides to exact revenge on criminals who escaped their prosecution
Review: Emile Hirsch is one of those actors that, no matter the film, his performances stand out. While he plays the straight man very well, I’ve always enjoyed him more when he goes the more “out there” route. And his role as Walden is certainly a weird one. Walden Dean is a courtroom stenographer obsessed with breaking the typing world record. But when he’s told he’s dying, he decides he can no longer be an impartial observer, and takes matters into his own hands. And his sense of justice is quite…violent.
Don’t go into Walden expecting some kind of stereotypical trajectory of “Man takes justice into his own hands.” Sure, there are absolutely elements that feel...

A scene from Helen”S Dead. Courtesy of Screen Media
If you’re in the mood for a gory little dark comedy, Helen’S Dead might allay your craving. The tale plays out in one arduous night (apart from a few flashbacks) at a small, rather fancy dinner party. The host (Brian Huskey) is an uptight foodie; his wife (Annabelle Dexter-Jones) is an even more uptight “influencer.” Guests include her sister, Helen (Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz), their cousin Addie (Dylan Gelula), a jerk (Emile Hirsch) who’d been involved with both, a writer (Beth Dover) and a couple of unexpected visitors. The film opens with one of them announcing she’s just found Helen dead in another room, then brings us up to and beyond that point, with further casualties, motives and suspects in play.
Unlike most flicks in which the members of a small isolated group of victims-in-waiting are bumped off one-by-one,...

Jon Watts, director of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far from Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, is producing the sixth film in the Final Destination franchise with Dianne McGunigle, Sheila Hanahan Taylor, and Craig Perry – and entertainment industry scooper Daniel Richtman just revealed the plot synopsis for the new film, along with some character descriptions and the title, which isn’t going to be Final Destination 6. This one is going by the title Final Destination: Bloodlines, which is kind of bummer because Bloodlines is a very over-used subtitle in the horror world. To name just a few, we’ve previously gotten Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines, Tremors 5: Bloodlines, and Pet Sematary: Bloodlines.
But there is good reason for the Bloodlines subtitle, because family bloodlines are important to the story. Jeffrey Reddick – who wrote the initial screenplay for the original Final Destination and contributed to Final Destination 2 – has previously said that...

"I hear innocence, and I hear evil. Sometimes... evil walks away." Uncork'd has revealed the trailer for a film called Walden, a revenge thriller written & directed by Mick Davis. This is getting a limited theatrical release in November before heading to VOD to watch. Walden Dean, an unassuming court stenographer in a small southern town, he discovers he is dying. So he decides to exact revenge on criminals who escaped their prosecution. The poster art for this has a "Dexter" vibe, which is probably what they're aiming for anyway. The "scales of justice" in blood is amusing, too. Starring Emile Hirsch as the titular Walden, with Shane West, Kelli Garner, Tania Raymonde, Steve Coulter, & David Keith. While this has a good concept, the footage looks like a made-for-tv Saturday night special presentation. Not much to worth watching here. // Continue Reading ›...

The Price We Pay is directed by Ryuhei Kitamura, from a script written by Christopher Jolley, and stars Gigi Zumbado, Stephen Dorff, Emile Hirsch, Vernon Wells, Erika Ervin, and Tanner Zagarino; and follows a group of robbers and their hostage finding out that the farmhouse they’ve taken refuge in is far from the haven they thought it would be, forcing them to survive the owners’ onslaught…
Kitamura once again returns to the well of threadbare activities in secluded locations. This time, Jolley takes the helmer’s film to a farmhouse, and that’s right about where the plot developments end. It’s a simple and heavily disappointing choice to focus on nothing. After a prologue showing a prostitute being dumped at a quiet gas station and kidnapped by an as-of-yet-unseen figure,...

In addition to Zaring and McNamara, producers will include Bianca Cioffi and Charles Vignola of Zce, Virtuosity’s Todd Allen, and Bme’s David Brookwell. Topline roles will be filled once the SAG-AFTRA strike resolves. As a direct result of Texas’ $200M Film Incentives Fund, signed into law in July of this year, production should kick off in and around Austin, Texas next fall.

The plot may be predictable but for fans of the gory revenge genre, director Ryûhei Kitamura’s latest is a solid genre exercise
An intensively minced blend of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and an Abdominal Surgery for Beginners DVD, this is a solid genre exercise in gore and retribution. After an ominous abduction scene featuring nubile victim Carly (Sabina Mach), the film cuts to down-on-her-luck pawn-shop customer Grace (a very watchable Gigi Zumbado) trying with another trinket just as the place is being burgled by three armed robbers; these are former army medic Cody (Stephen Dorff), plus brothers Alex (Emile Hirsch) and Shane (Tanner Zagarino). A fourth man in the gang, the getaway driver, takes off in a panic and Grace is pressed into driving them away from the crime scene after Shane is shot in the leg.
Given they seem to be in the middle of the same American...

"All ya'll are suspects!!" Screen Media has unveiled an official trailer for Helen's Dead, a strange murder mystery whodunit comedy directed by the producer K. Asher Levin. This looks like something everyone will avoid before even looking at the footage. Red Box trash. Helen's Dead follows the story of Addie, played by Dylan Gelula. After a terrible breakup with her boyfriend, Addie goes to confront her friend about cheating allegations and accidentally steps into a murder scene. For some random reason, now it's up to Addie to find Helen's killer before it's too late. Too late for what? They'll kill again? Get away with it? Who knows. It also stars Emile Hirsch, Tyrese Gibson, Dylan Gelula, Oliver Cooper, Matilda Lutz (as dead Helen), & Annabelle Dexter-Jones. Reminds me of the series "The Afterparty", but with junk characters and no actual humor. // Continue Reading ›...
