In the fuselage of a C-47 transport plane, a group of high-ranking Nazis in uniforms stripped of their insignia are facing their captors. Among them, Hermann Göring strikes up a conversation with a U.S. military psychiatrist, Lt. Colonel Douglas Kelley. “Howie here tells me you do magic,” Göring says to Kelley. Kelley nods and shows him a quick coin trick. “Very good,” Göring responds. “But I am going to show you a real magic trick someday. I am going to escape the hangman’s noose.”
It is then that Robert Ley, the Nazi head of the German Labour Front, spots something out of the window. “Nürnberg,” he announces. As the rest of the group takes in the sight of the bombed city, their destination is clear. The Palace of Justice is one of the few buildings that remain standing. Their trial will soon begin.

Post-wwii war crimes thriller Nuremberg boasts a strong leading trio and is set to seek backing at next month’s Cannes Film Festival.
While we don’t have too much on this story, there’s a report that a new project titled Nuremberg is to be revealed at next month’s Cannes Film Festival.
The film will be launching sales at Cannes to try and secure backing to give the film a green light and considering some of the acting talent signed up, we can’t imagine the producers walking away from the French film festival empty-handed.
But first, the set-up.

With the notable exception of the beloved Carrie Fisher, many of the iconic lead actors in the "Star Wars" saga are still with us. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, and Natalie Portman are all going strong, and so are the stars of the space opera's most recent episodes. Some of the actors from the original film who were already veterans at the time, like Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing, died some years ago, but both enjoyed long lives beyond the average age.
Sadly, this cannot be said of numerous other actors involved in the big screen franchise and its recent TV spin-offs. Performers have died in their 70s, 60s, and 50s, many of them leaving us wishing we could have seen more years of great performances from them. Whether they had spotlight roles or were hidden behind alien masks, here are the "Star Wars" actors we lost too soon.

When Logan Roy yells “F*ck off!” you get a good feeling he means it. And when his portrayer, Brian Cox, says that “woke culture is truly awful”, you know he’s not kidding around.
Speaking with Piers Morgan on his TalkTV show, Brian Cox went after millennials, explaining how their self-righteousness disgusts him. “I think [social media] points out too readily inadequacies. The whole woke culture is truly awful…and the shaming culture. I don’t know where it comes from. Who are the arbiters of this shaming? And it’s very hard to pin them down, and, it turns out, it’s usually a bunch of millennials. And who gave them the halos? I suppose in a way they’re probably saying, ‘Well you’ve all screwed it up so we may as well do something about it.’ But it’s from the wrong principle. It comes from the wrong place.

Even though he’s not in Ridley Scott’s sequel to Gladiator, Russell Crowe can’t give an interview without anyone asking him questions about it. While appearing at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Crowe (via THR) weighed in on being constantly asked about Gladiator 2.

A day after receiving much love from crowds at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for his acting and musical chops, Russell Crowe on Saturday discussed future projects, his passion for music and addressed, yet again, Gladiator 2.
“The next project I shoot is Nuremberg,” the Hollywood star told a press conference at the festival without sharing more details, drawing gasps when he added: “And I play Hermann Göring.” After all, Göring was one of the most powerful figures in Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party. During the Nuremberg trials in 1946, he was sentenced to death by hanging for war crimes, crimes against humanity and other crimes. He died by suicide before the sentence was to be carried out. During a recent Irish radio interview, Crowe had also mentioned the movie, adding that it would be directed by Jamie Vanderbilt.

A generation may see Brian Cox only as Logan Roy, the patriarch of "Succession," but there's a lot more to the Scottish actor than HBO's hit black comedy. Cox is established not just in television but on stage and in film, where he's worked with directors such as Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Michael Mann, Spike Lee, and Spike Jonze.
Cox's venerable reign at the top of Hollywood's B-list -- on his way to the A-list -- has been truly workmanlike, encompassing some 240-plus acting credits (via IMDb). In 2001, Cox won an Emmy for his performance as Hermann Göring in the TV movie "Nuremberg." Two years later, Queen Elizabeth II appointed him Commander of the British Empire, and then, in 2007, the UK Film Council recognized Cox as among the top 10 most powerful British actors in Hollywood (via PBS).

This article contains spoilers for Succession season 4 episode 2.
Logan Roy is not a good person.
Succession has made that increasingly clear through four seasons as the Scotland-born media oligarch has poisoned the American consciousness through his provocative American Television Network (Atn) while also making time to psychologically torture his four children.
Still, while Logan’s villainy is quite apparent, occasionally the series around him likes to take some time out from an episode to reiterate “no, for real. Like this dude is really bad.” The latest example comes in season 4 episode 2 “Rehearsal,” in which Logan (Brian Cox) once again interferes in his children’s lives to devastating results. Previously Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook), and Roman (Kieran Culkin) have all presented a united front against their father. But all it takes is one meeting with Roman to get the formerly abused child back under his father’s insidious thumb.

Brian Cox, the Scottish actor known for playing formidable media baron Logan Roy on HBO’s “Succession,” is making his directorial debut in film with “Glenrothan.” The project is being co-developed by Lionsgate and London-based “Keeping Faith” producer Nevision.
The Emmy, Golden Globe and Olivier Award-winning “Succession” actor will also star in the film, which is billed as a “love letter to Scotland.” The project marks the second time Cox is going behind the camera: He previously directed an episode of HBO series “Oz” in 2000.
“Glenrothan” is set in a distillery town in the Scottish Highlands, and tells the story of two estranged brothers reuniting in the land of their birth. The last time they spoke was on the day of their mother’s funeral when, following a violent exchange with their father, the younger of the two left their Highland home for America. Forty years later, the brothers finally reunite,...

The last time they spoke was on the day of their mother’s funeral when, following a violent exchange with their father, the younger of the two left their Highland home for America. Forty years later, the brothers finally reunite,...

It’s been nearly two decades since Brian Cox was last nominated for a Golden Globe. Now, not only does he look like he’s on track to get nominated again but he could be a very big threat to win his first career Globe as Best TV Drama Actor for Season 2 of HBO’s “Succession.”
“Succession” is in a perfect position to garner some major love from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Last year the show only netted a single nomination for Kieran Culkin in Best TV Supporting Actor. Since then, the show has exploded with its second season and Cox has been a huge part of that. His portrayal of family patriarch Logan Roy has become a deliciously menacing character that’s among the best on television, whether he’s telling someone to “F*** off!” or screaming “Boar On The Floor!”

Foreplays is a column that explores under-known short films by renowned directors. Peter Nestler's Death and Devil (2009) is available to watch on Mubi from August 2 - September 1, 2017 in most countries around the world as part of the retrospective A Vision of Resistance.Death and Devil (2009) holds a special place in the filmography of Peter Nestler, marking an intriguing crossroads. Nestler’s work is strongly associated with filmmakers including Jean-Marie Straub & Danièle Huillet, Alexander Kluge, and Harun Farocki. Like them, he is primarily concerned with history and politics, intent on unveiling the traces of fascism, documenting the processes of the industrialization of cities, and narrating the conditions and struggles of laborers. But here, Nestler turns his gaze to something more immediately personal: his grandfather, Count Eric von Rosen (1879-1948), a celebrated explorer, ethnographer, and archaeologist. The film seemingly presents itself as a linear biography, giving special importance to an African...

Triumph of the Will
Written by Leni Riefenstahl, Walter Ruttmann, Eberhard Taubert
Directed by Leni Riefenstahl
Germany, 1935
It is never easy to look at Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will as anything other than what Dr. Anthony Santoro quite rightly calls a “supreme propaganda film.” As that, it is nearly unparalleled in the dubious annals of film history. Contributing to its difficulty in terms of analysis, however, is the fact that it is, at the same time, more than simply a notorious document of evil in bloom. For all the troublesome features that recurrently arise through the course of this film—the domineering presence of Adolf Hitler being just one obvious example—this is one remarkably well-crafted motion picture. Its status as the ultimate work of cinematic propaganda is, indeed, a direct result of just how superbly powerful, sadly persuasive, and expertly realized the documentary is, for better or worse.

The Holocaust, the murder of millions of civilians and the attempted ethnic cleansing of the entirety of Eastern Europe – these are just some of the policies carried out by Nazi Germany both before and during the Second World War.
With Adolf Hitler directing policy as Führer, the Nazi Party leader attempted to expand the German Empire beyond its own borders and to remove all Jews and other “undesirables” from Europe. The names of such Nazi orchestrators as Hitler, Josef Mengele, Heinrich Himmler, Adolf Eichmann, Joseph Goebbels and Hermann Göring are well known – but there are equally, if not more, evil perpetrators out there who are not as widely publicised.
“The Beast” herself orchestrated the murder of more than 500,000 women during the Holocaust, Oskar Dirlewanger was deemed so sadistic that he enjoyed watching his soldiers rape drugged women right in front of him, while Odilo Globocnik ordered the murder of several...

Producers Brad Fischer and James Vanderbilt ("Zodiac") are planning to produce the Nazi Germany-set true story thriller "Blackout" through their Mythology Entertainment company.
Set between 1940 and 1941, the story follows the hunt for a ruthless serial killer within the Third Reich, and a relentless detective who must confront his own murderous regime in order to catch the killer.
At the time, the British were conducting nightly bombing raids, forcing the Berlin government to implement a "blackout" at night. The only light sources came from phosphorous paint on every street corner, bus and commuter train.
The film will be based on Scott Andrew Selby's book "A Serial Killer in Nazi Berlin: The Chilling True Story of the S-Bahn Murderer". Mark Hogan has been hired to adapt the script.
This is one of two Nazi-themed projects Mythology is developing, the other being "The Nazi and the Psychiatrist" about Hermann Goering’s stay at...

London Mayor Boris Johnson has hit back at George Clooney over comments he made about Britain returning the Elgin Marbles.
Clooney, who was in London this week to promote new movie The Monuments Men, suggested that the 2,500-year-old sculptures should be returned to Athens.
The marbles were removed from the Parthenon in Greece by Lord Elgin, who later sold them to the British government. They are now located at the British Museum.
Clooney said at the Monuments Men London press conference earlier this week: "Maybe it wouldn't be a bad thing if they were returned. I think that is a good idea. That would be a very fair and very nice thing. I think it is the right thing to do."
Video: Digital Spy speaks to John Goodman, Jean Dujardin
However, Johnson has criticised Clooney for his comments, telling The Telegraph: "Someone urgently needs to restore George Clooney's marbles.

This year, The Great Escape celebrates its golden anniversary. To honor the 50th anniversary of that film’s release, we’ve compiled 50 interesting facts about the film, actors, the true story, the novel and more, and we’re giving two lucky North American readers the chance to win the anniversary blu-ray of the film.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment are proud to announce that The Great Escape will arrive on Blu-ray for the first time on May 7, 2013. Based on a true story, The Great Escape is “a motion picture that entertains, captivates, thrills and stirs” (Variety). In 1943, the Germans opened a maximum-security prison-of-war camp, designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. By doing so, they unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history – brilliantly portrayed by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn – who worked on what became the largest prison breakout ever attempted.

Film Movement's next theatrical release is Hitler's Children. The film basically chronicles the lives of a number of descendants of top Nazi officials, including Hitler, Himmler, Göring and others, as they struggle to accept and try to come to terms with the legacy of their grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles and god parents.
The film was made by a veteran Israeli documentary filmmaker, Chanoch Ze’evi, who has made many films about the descendants of survivors and is now broadening his exploration of the issue and surprisingly discovering many similarities about the two communities.
Bettina Göring, grand-niece of Herman Göring will be in N.Y. for the opening November 16 at the Quad.
Adolf Hitler did not have children, but what of the families of Hermann Göring, Heinrich Himmler and Hans Frank, to name a few? What is it like for the descendants of these top Nazi officials to deal with the legacy left behind by their notorious families? Hitler's Children introduces us to the children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews of these infamous men. Among them Niklas Frank, son of Hans Frank and godson of Hitler, who despises his father’s past so much that he has spent his entire adult life researching and writing negatively about him, often touring around Germany to lecture against his father and the Nazi regime. And Bettina Göring, the great-niece of Hitler’s second in command, Hermann Göring, who lives in voluntary exile in Santa Fe, Nm and together with her brother decided to get sterilized so as to not pass on the Göring name or blood.
These, and many others, discuss how they have coped with the fact that their last name alone immediately raises images of murder and genocide; and how they have reached a balance between the natural admiration and affection children feel towards their parents, and their innate revulsion of their crimes. Some have been more successful than others at achieving that balance, but each bares, for the first time, the scars that their legacy has left them.

A spokesperson for the Federation, Daniel Hoffman, said: "The raccoon is firmly established in Germany, this has to be accepted." Magnus Wessel, (more)...

The queen of pop's film about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor ignores the evidence, dismissing allegations of Nazi sympathies and recasting the needy Edward as a brooding hunk
W.E. (2012)
Director: Madonna
Entertainment grade: D+
History grade: D–
In 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated to marry his lover, Wallis Simpson. They became the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
Style
Despite its critical panning, not everything about W.E. is terrible. The costumes are very nice. Andrea Riseborough gives a decent performance as Wallis – though admittedly the brittle, self-conscious dialogue is better suited to her character than to anyone else's. W.E. interweaves the story of the king and Mrs Simpson with the tribulations of a fictional New Yorker, Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), who is obsessed with Wallis. She attends the 1998 auction of the Windsors' belongings at Sotheby's, hallucinating Wallis's ghost as she idly fondles a pug-shaped cushion. Meanwhile, her marriage to a nasty...

A compact, conclusive primer on the criminality and rise of the Nazi party, Nuremberg: Its Lesson For Today, is actually a recovered documentary from 1948 written and directed by the late Stuart Schulberg (brother of Budd, the writer of On The Waterfront) that, though U.S.-sponsored, was never released in this country. Thought lost for many years, Schulberg’s daughter Sandra Schulberg and her fellow documentarian Josh Waletzky have now restored the film using a decent print that they discovered with the help of the German Bundesarchiv (Germany’s National Archive, headquartered in Berlin). Enlisting the vocal talents of actor Liev Schreiber, the narration has been re-recorded, this time in English and the result is an interesting documentary that combines footage of the trial of Hitler’s commanders who survived the war – Hermann Goering, Rudolf Hess, Julius Streicher, etc. with a concise flashback history of the rise and fall of the Nazi Party.

Agnès Poirier's excellent account of Marcel Carne's film Les Enfants du Paradis (Garance: our last affair, 7 November) mentions that the cast included some Nazi collaborators.
However, she does not add that the most notorious of them was the film's star, Arletty, who lived with a Luftwaffe officer, hobnobbed with Hermann Goering among others at social events in Germany, dined cheerfully at the Ritz during wartime with leading Vichy antisemites implicated in sending thousands of French Jews to their deaths, and – like the appalling Coco Chanel – engaged in collaboration horizontale on the grand scale.
Her great director, Marcel Carne, declined to join the Resistance unlike many other French film-makers and had a successful war making movies. Les Enfants du Paradis, like Dw Griffith's Birth of a Nation, is a film masterpiece morally tainted.
