Tige Charity found herself unemployed from an insurance department job during the late-2000s recession. Looking to find a new sense of purpose, she began thinking about a visit she’d once made to a girls group home with her husband, actor Antonio D. Charity (The Orville), and how the home’s director had told her about the rewards of mentorship. In 2009, Tige decided to create Kids in the Spotlight (Kits), a nonprofit that helps empower foster youth through filmmaking. Kits program participants write, direct, shoot, cast and act in projects alongside mentors from the film world. “You give them the arts, create a platform for them to be seen, heard, validated and celebrated,” says Tige.

Christmas is all about magic and miracles, so the timing is just right for a miracle between two estranged sisters in Hallmark Movies and Mysteries‘ first holiday movie for their Mahogany brand, The Holiday Stocking. When viewers meet single Dani (Nadine Ellis) and married mom Marlow (Tamala Jones), they learn the two have drifted apart due to a series of personal tragedies through the years. “We basically have found that there’s been a rift in our relationship since we lost our mother and it really has not come back together,” Ellis tells TV Insider. Adds Jones, “Marlow holds some resentment towards [Dani] because of how things were when the mother was still here. And then afterwards, Marlow feels that Dani had more important things to do other than family things.” In a divine twist, the sisters’ recently-deceased older brother Robert (Mykelti Williamson) holds the reconciliation key that could help heal...

It’s that time of the year that holiday movies take over Hallmark Channel (with “Countdown to Christmas”) & Hallmark Movies & Mysteries (with “Miracles of Christmas”), and we love it. We’re not the only ones, as TV Insider learned when we recently caught up with the stars of the movies on the red carpet for Hallmark Media’s star-studded kickoff of “Countdown to Christmas.” “I think we all know by now that Hallmark is about Christmas, it’s about connection,” Nadine Ellis (The Holiday Stocking) says in the video above. And, as Ashley Williams (Five More Minutes: Moments Like These) notes, it allowed people to find a connection, to feel “unified” during the pandemic, “a true time of isolation.” And these movies include stories that everyone can enjoy, as The Holiday Sitter‘s Jonathan Bennett and George Krissa share. “We love telling stories at Hallmark Channel, especially LGBTQ+ Christmas stories,...

Our Kind of People‘s finale ended with a cliffhanger, but fans won’t get to find out if Leah lives or dies — Fox has pulled the plug on the sexy and soapy drama.
Created by former mixed-ish showrunner Karin Gist and executive-produced by Empire’s Lee Daniels, Our Kind of People spotlighted the Black, rich and fabulous who call the Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard home. Chicago Med alum Yaya DaCosta starred as Angela, an ambitious but kind social climber and single mother who came to the Bluffs to find out the identity of her biological father and launch her hair care line.

Colorism within the Black community is never an easy issue to tackle. But Fox’s sudsy new drama Our Kind of People attempted to do just that on Tuesday’s installment, titled “Hot Links & Red Drinks.”

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Tuesday’s series premiere of Fox’s “Our Kind of People.”)
Lee Daniels and Karin Gist’s new Fox drama “Our Kind of People” dropped a mother of a bombshell on its protagonist in the series premiere Tuesday. In the episode, single mother and Black haircare entrepreneur Angela Vaughn (played by star Yaya DaCosta) found out the long-hidden identity of her father: business mogul Teddy Franklin (Joe Morton).
Adding a twist of the knife to that revelation — a secret which Angela’s deceased mother took to her grave — is the fact that Teddy’s daughter, Leah Franklin Dupont (Nadine Ellis), has had it out for Angela since the moment she and her daughter, Nikki (Alana Bright), moved to the Black elite community of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard to open a popup salon and pursue a grant for small business owners from the Franklin family’s Franklin Holdings.

The idea of a series starring Black characters on a historically Black, monied island that’s completely unconcerned with the white power structures beyond it is a juicy one. Created by Karin Gist of Fox’s “Star” and “Revenge,” and executive produced by Lee Daniels, “Our Kind of People” embraces its singularity. Whereas something like HBO Max’s “Gossip Girl” takes pains to diversify the typically white social strata of the Upper East Side, “Our Kind of People” unfolds in the Oak Bluffs corner of Martha’s Vineyard, where the “Black elite” have long established their wealthy bonafides. In theory, adapting Lawrence Otis Graham’s history of the area (“Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class”) into a primetime soap opera is a sharp idea. In execution, at least in the first two episodes screened ahead of the show’s Sept. 21 linear premiere, “Our Kind of People...

It’s usually easy to tell if Morris Chestnut is a good guy on the TV dramas he stars in. He has played a couple of FBI agents, a manny, and life-saving doctors on two separate Fox procedurals.
But on the network’s new nighttime soap Our Kind of People, which premieres Tuesday at 9/8c, Chestnut’s Raymond Dupont is a smooth and successful businessman with secrets that could either expose him as the villain no one saw coming or a do-gooder trying to amend past misdeeds.

It’s been three years since “Scandal,” when the allure of live tweeting series on a weekly basis was at its peak for Black Twitter. Since then, many other soapy, watch-after-you’ve-put-the-kids-to-sleep dramas, like Netflix’s “Firefly Lane” and “Sex/Life,” have popped up on streaming platforms, threatening to dismantle the online group viewing experience in favor of binge watching. But Fox’s new melodrama, “Our Kind of People,” from Karen Gist and Lee Daniels, seems to be trying very hard to rekindle appointment TV for Black audiences with a saga about class wars in the uppity Martha’s Vineyard town of Oak Bluffs.
And it’s not especially worth the effort. In fact, after the first episode, you might consider jumping ship altogether. Yaya DaCosta addressed her shocking departure from NBC’s Chicago Med after six seasons and whether or not her role in Fox’s Our Kind of People from executive producer Lee Daniels played a role in her decision.
“My exit from Chicago Med and the arrival of this show happened really simultaneously. There isn’t much to say about it. There was a window opening and a question mark as to whether I should stay or go,” said DaCosta during the show’s TCA panel on Wednesday. “And in that window, I fell in love with Our Kind of People and I jumped at the opportunity to work with Lee Daniels again. I first worked with him years ago on The Butler.”
She continued, “The show is a dream in so many ways and it’s saucy and so much fun! And there’s so much about my character that...

Some good news for Lucifer fans. Fox says it will air two “bonus” episodes that were filmed earlier this spring. The episodes were scheduled to air in the fourth season, which of course, is not happening following the show’s cancellation.
The back-to-back “Boo Normal”/”Once Upon A Time” episodes will air Monday, May 28 beginning at 8 Pm, two weeks after the now-series finale.
This isn’t a first. Fox previously produced four stand-alone episodes in Season 2 that aired in the third season.
Per the network’s description for the bonus episodes: As Lucifer (Tom Ellis) and the team investigate the murder of a child psychiatrist, Ella (Aimee Garcia) thinks about a big childhood secret that she’s been hiding. Then, after Lucifer’s mom creates an alternate dimension, Lucifer now lives in a world where he not only has never met Chloe (Lauren German), but is granted the freedom of choice.
