“This show was an idea that started before I was ever nominated for any Tony,” says Kelli O’Hara about her role of Kirsten in “Days of Wine and Roses” that has earned her the eighth Tony Award nomination of her career. The idea to musicalize the 1962 film of the same name came from the actress, when she approached composer Adam Guettel during “the very first workshop of ‘Light in the Piazza’” about writing the score. She shares, “In a way, this particular role and piece have been in my mind along with every other role I’ve played since that time… so that makes it the most special to me.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Though it might seem counterintuitive to adapt “Days of Wine and Roses” to the stage as a musical instead of a play, O’Hara said it made perfect sense because she tells “stories so...

Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics unveiled nominations for their 2nd annual Dorian Theater Awards on Monday, March 13. Galeca’s 39-member theater wing decided this season’s crop of nominees, which honor the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway.
The nominations list is dominated by the current revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” and new play “Stereophonic.” Both productions netted six nominations a piece. In the case of “Merrily,” that tally includes bids for its Tony-nominated trio of stars: Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe. “Stereophonic” managed one better with four members of its cast nominated in the same featured performance category: Will Brill, Eli Gelb, Tom Pecinka, and Sarah Pidgeon. The individual acting races at the Dorian Awards are gender neutral.
The Best Broadway Musical category features Tony Award nominees “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Illinoise,” “The Outsiders,” and “Suffs,” along with the closed David Byrne tuner “Here Lies Love” and soon-to-be closing “Lempicka.

At the beginning of Act Two of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, Lindsay Mendez and other ensemble members sing “It’s A Hit!,” celebrating the successful opening of characters Charlie and Frank’s first Broadway musical. Indeed, one could say the same about this revival of “Merrily,” not just because of its smash box office receipts, but also because of the seven Tony Awards nominations that it received on April 30. This recognition from New York theatre’s highest honor is a true redemption for the show, whose original production was a notorious flop for composer Stephen Sondheim and director Hal Prince that ran only 16 regular performances and earned only a single bid for Sondheim’s original score. But how does this production’s Tony success compare to other recent revivals of the late composer’s works?

A musical inspired by the life of Alicia Keys and a play that loosely draws on the story of Fleetwood Mac — Hell’s Kitchen and Stereophonic, respectively — cleaned up at the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. Both received 13 nominations, more than any other show this year.
Hell’s Kitchen was nominated for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical (for Kristoffer Diaz), Best Direction (Michael Greif), and Best Choreography (Camille A. Brown), while its stars Maleah Joi Moon, Shoshana Bean, and Kecia Lewis all picked up acting nods. But despite its impressive haul,...

Stereophonic became the most nominated play in Tony Awards history Tuesday, scoring a surprisingly strong 13 nominations for the 2024 Tony Awards, including acting nods for almost the entire cast. Several other shows also saw most of their leading roles nominated, including Days of Wine and Roses, which closed early but still saw nominations for its leads Kelli O’Hara and Brian D’Arcy James, as well as Merrily We Roll Along, which saw nominations for its three leads, Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez.
Stereophonic also landed a best score nomination, a bit unusual since the production is a play, but it features original songs written by ex-Arcade Fire member Will Butler for the fictional band at the center of the story. While the songs in the play have been praised, the nomination is a bit atypical given that most of the songs featured in the musical are delivered in snippets,...

Daniel Radcliffe’s post-“Harry Potter” career has long been dominated by his theater work, both in New York and London. On April 30, he finally scored his first Tony nomination, for his role in the musical “Merrily We Roll Along.”
Radcliffe’s buzzy stage work began in 2007 with a run in “Equus” on both sides of the pond. He powered a delightful, blockbuster revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in 2011 (Grammy nomination), and since then, he has chosen an eclectic mix of projects, work where his name alone can often get challenging — or even just serious — work funded. Think the occasionally dense “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” the provocative “Privacy,” or the genre-bending experiment “The Lifespan of a Fact.” He’s long been an asset to the NY stage scene, and this morning’s recognition long-deserved.

Close races and sharp elbows are likely when the 2024 Tony Award nominations are announced Tuesday morning. With so many shows opening during the onslaught of the past two weeks, nominators might still be clearing their minds — and maybe taking a moment to eat and breathe — as they ponder and re-ponder the 36 productions that opened on Broadway between April 28, 2023, and April 25, 2024.
Some of the nominations are no-brainers: The much-praised and hugely popular Merrily We Roll Along is a sure bet for all concerned, but what about more polarizing fare? Cabaret, Here Lies Love, Water for Elephants, I’m looking at you.
A selection of categories will be read live on CBS Mornings at 8:30 am Et, and a full livestream of the announcements will follow at 9 a.m. Et on the official Tony Awards YouTube page.

A new musical, a musical revival and a new play with music will dominate the 2024 Tony Awards nominations, according to our official odds in 17 of the 26 categories. The latest revival of the classic John Kander and Fred Ebb musical “Cabaret,” fresh off a smash run on the West End, and the new musical “Hell’s Kitchen” that is loosely based on the life of Alicia Keys and her music will both net at least seven nominations. New works “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Here Lies Love” and “Suffs” and the starry revival of Stephen Sondheim‘s notorious flop “Merrily We Roll Along” will also earn substantial nominations tallies.
Playwright David Adjmi‘s “Stereophonic” will lead this year’s crop of plays and play revivals with at least five nominations. Right behind are five other works – two new shows and three revivals – that will all tie at least four nominations apiece,...

“This crazy whirlwind of a season has finally come to an end,” declares Sam Eckmann as we kick off our final Tony Awards nominations predictions slugfest of 2024. We begin our conversation with the musical categories and the ever-challenging race for Best Musical. Sam and I both feel “pretty secure” about the top three shows – “Suffs,” “Illinoise” and “Hell’s Kitchen” – and we surprisingly concur on the final two slots, predicting “Here Lies Love” and “The Outsiders.” There are so many potential nominees in contention, though, that we cite our alternate picks as I opt for “Days of Wine and Roses” as my number six, and Sam goes with “The Notebook.” Watch our full Tony Awards video slugfest above.

Nominations for the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on Tuesday, April 23. The stars of the hit Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, read off the nominees live from the Museum of Broadway.
Off-Broadway productions ultimately out-paced Broadway with this critics group. The new David Yazbek musical “Dead Outlaw” led the pack with nine nominations. It was followed by “The Connector,” another Off-Broadway musical, and “Stereophonic,” a lauded Broadway play, with seven nominations each.
While there are no Tony nominators in the Outer Critics Circle membership, these nominations can provide some clues as to how theater aficionados are thinking about this season’s Tony race. According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing, two closed shows are expected to receive nominations for Best Musical at this year’s Tony Awards. They are “Days of Wine and Roses,” which is in fifth place with 19/2 odds, and “Here Lies Love,” which is in second with 5/1 odds. Traditionally, however, closed shows tend to struggle getting Best Musical noms.
“Here Lies Love” opened way back in the summer of last year and was well received by critics. Yet it sadly never caught on commercially and ended up closing last November. Meanwhile, “Days of Wine and Roses” had already intended to be a limited run with its final performance planned for April 28 after opening in January to its own critical acclaim. Yet due to lackluster grosses, the run became even more limited, ending early on March 31.

Days of Wine and Roses, the critically acclaimed musical adaptation of the 1962 film, will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, March 31, just about two months after its January 28 opening night.
The production becomes the third in recent weeks to announce that it would vacate the Broadway boards just as the industry gears up for one of the busiest springs in memory. Spamalot, which opened last November, announced yesterday that it would close Sunday, April 7, while A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical will play its final performance on Sunday, June 30; the production opened December 4, 2022.
All three of the soon-to-close shows have been struggling at the box office in recent weeks. Last week, Days of Wine and Roses, with a book by Craig Lucas and music and lyrics by Adam Guettel, grossed just $364,686, filling only 55% of seats at Broadway’s Studio 54.
The musical, which began previews on Broadway January 6 and...

The gripping new Broadway rendition of Blake Edwards‘ 1962 film Days of Wine and Roses wastes no time delving into the destructive impact of alcoholism on the marriage of characters Kirsten and Joe Clay.
Directed by Michael Greif, the production is infused with heartache and hangovers and is well worth the discomfort it causes in one’s seat.
After twenty-one years in the making, this rendition of the classic tale stars Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. The songbook, music and lyrics by Adam Guettel, are composed of haunting minor keys and an overtone of darkness that is rarely seen in Broadway’s traditional spectacles. The script and songs feature a significant amount of operatic-style singing and speaking that establishes a melancholic tone.
The story follows Joe (Brian D’Arcy James), a Korean War veteran turned PR dynamo, who exudes mid-century machismo and meets Kirsten (Kelli O’Hara) at a work event. In the beginning,...

Sixty-two years after the release of the film “Days of Wine and Roses,” the Oscar-winning movie by writer J.P. Miller and director Blake Edwards, a musical adaptation has opened on Broadway with a score by Adam Guettel. The story of two characters brought together and torn asunder by alcohol stars Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James in the roles played in the movie by Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon. The production opened at Studio 54 on Jan. 28.
In addition to reuniting Guettel and O’Hara, who collaborated on “The Light in the Piazza,” the librettist Craig Lucas from that musical contributed the book for this new venture. The ensemble cast includes Tabitha Lawing and Byron Jennings in pivotal roles under the helm of director Michael Greif.
Theatre critics were largely positive about this new Guettel musical. It earns a Critic’s Pick from Laura Collins-Hughes (New York Times), who praises the “superb” performances,...

Broadway box office was back on earth last week following the previous week’s unusual double-holiday surge, when both Christmas and New Year’s Eve fell within the same theatrical window.
For the week ending January 7, Broadway’s 26 productions grossed a total $29,681,396, a 35% drop from the previous week‘s $45,413,789. Attendance was down about 14% to 219,787; the discrepancy between the percentages attributable to the holiday week’s high ticket prices.
Last week’s average ticket price was $135.05, $42 lower than the holiday week.
Despite the total box office drop-off, most shows continued pulling in decent numbers, with 15 of the 26 productions grossing more than $1 million (and three of those taking in more than $2 million).
Members of the $1M Club were & Juliet, Aladdin; Back to the Future; Gutenberg!; Hamilton; Harry Potter and the Cursed Child; Merrily We Roll Along; Mj; Moulin Rouge!; Six; Spamalot; and The Book of Mormon. The highest earners were The Lion King...

This article contains Pain Hustlers spoilers.
The opening moments of Pain Hustlers play a clever bit of reversal on audiences accustomed to watching movies “inspired by real events.” Driving a too-cool-for-school convertible across a vast southeastern bridge, Emily Blunt’s Liza Drake is introduced like many other cinematic devils. Here is a villain whose rise to a real-world throne of vice and corruption is so seductive, they’re going to spend the entire movie bragging about it to us. While Liza doesn’t quite reach the heights of Henry Hill’s opening gloats in Goodfellas—who famously began that movie by saying, “As long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster”—she is plenty prideful as her voiceover announces, “Throw the first stone, sure, but this is my story. And I did it for the right reasons.”
The audience is then bombarded with contradictory information from Liza’s colleagues,...

Plot: After a chance encounter with a fast-talking pharma rep (Chris Evans), a desperate single mother (Emily Blunt) goes to work for a pharmaceutical start-up that’s pushing a revolutionary new drug.
Review: Pain Hustlers suffers because it comes out hot on the heels of two excellent limited series about the opioid epidemic, Hulu’s Dopesick and Netflix’s Painkiller. Those shows took a macro approach to the epidemic, focusing on the Sackler family, the marketing of oxycontin, and its effect on the public. They did a pretty good job delivering a nuanced version of the story. Smartly, David Yates’ Pain Hustlers (also from Netflix) doesn’t focus on Oxycontin, with it being loosely based on what happened with a company called Insys. Still, it tells its story in a straightforward, good guys and bad guys way that makes for comforting viewing but doesn’t compare to other, much better depictions of the opioid epidemic.

Pain Hustlers is a 2023 drama film directed by David Yates and based on the 2022 book of the same name by Evan Hughes. The film stars Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Andy García, Catherine O’Hara, Jay Duplass, and Brian d’Arcy James.
A medicine that relieves cancer pain is a good thing, right?
This is where the story of medicine, sales, and a medication containing harmful compounds like fentanyl begins, with prescriptions causing the harm portrayed in the movie.
The film blends drama, comedy, and a lot of rhythm to create a swift, coherent, and entertaining narrative. It doesn’t invent anything, but it still manages to entertain and provoke thoughts about the industry and business behind medicine.
The best part (as expected) is Emily Blunt in a role that seems tailor-made for her.
The major issue with the film is the difficulty in finding a likable character that we can empathize with.

David Yates’s Pain Hustlers puffs itself up as a dynamic epic about the American dream but ends up glorifying some truly grotesque characters. Wells Tower’s script pulls loosely from Evan Hughes’s book about how executives at pharmaceutical company Insys Therapeutics were convicted in 2019 of conspiring to bribe doctors to overprescribe the fentanyl spray Subsys. The story has every ingredient for gripping melodrama: greed, timeliness, money, drugs, death, betrayal, and an Icarus-like fall. Thomas Jennings’s Frontline episode “Opioids, Inc.” and the second part of Alex Gibney’s The Crime of the Century have already turned the sordid tale into powerful, infuriating nonfiction. But in the course of fictionalizing the Insys story, Yates and Tower lose sight of what made it compelling to begin with.
Though ostensibly about the 2010s’ epidemic of synthetic opioid overdoses, Pain Hustlers really hangs its story on the oh-so American grit and determination...

According to filmmaker David Yates, the Fantastic Beasts film franchise is falling under a dark spell. Speaking with Total Film Magazine, the director of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts said the enchanted spin-off prequel franchise is “parked” after three movies. Initially, the plan involved making five Fantastic Beasts films. However, that no longer appears to be the case.
“With ‘Beasts,’ it’s all just parked,” Yates said. “We made those three movies, the last one through a pandemic, and it was enormous fun but it was tough. We were actually filming when there wasn’t a vaccine. Thankfully, no one got sick, but we did have the most detailed protocols in place.”
The three movies in the Fantastic Beasts film series include Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016), The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018), and The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022). While the first film in the series delighted fans, earning $812.5M worldwide,...

If the trailer for Netflix’s Pain Hustlers has a familiar-ish ring, it’s because we’ve seen the topic – a big pharma company making billions off the [hurt] backs of patients – done multiple times before. This outing benefits from a big-name cast and narrowing the focus to one particular employee, played by Emily Blunt.
“I feel like it’s been bucket list name after bucket list name,” stated producer Lawrence Grey. “It is such an incredible cast.”
In addition to Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Catherine O’Hara, Chloe Coleman, Jay Duplass, and Brian d’Arcy James star in the pharmaceutical drama. The cast also includes Amit Shah, Aubrey Dollar, Willie Raysor, and Andy Garcia .
David Yates (the Fantastic Beasts films) directs from a screenplay by Wells Tower. Yates and Lawrence Grey produce, with Emily Blunt, Mark Moran, Yvonne Walcott-Yates, Lewis Taylor, and Ben Everard executive producing.

We're not in Kansas anymore, folks -- or, to put it more accurately, Chris Evans is no longer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ever since sending Steve Rogers off to retirement in "Avengers: Endgame," the A-list actor hasn't exactly shied away from shedding his image as the biggest boy-scout superhero this side of Superman. He's played loathsome murderers, like Ransom Drysdale in "Knives Out." He's gone full sociopathic villain as the mercenary Lloyd Hansen in the Russo brothers' "The Gray Man." And now, he's gearing up to portray yet another conniving and morally compromised figure in "Pain Hustlers," which appears intent on pushing the boundary of how far audiences will tolerate Evans as a thoroughly unlikable and money-grubbing creep.

Dealing with her increasingly unhinged boss (Andy Garcia), the worsening medical condition of her daughter (Chloe Coleman), and a growing awareness of the devastation the company is causing forces Liza to examine her choices.

There has always been a tenuous relationship between live theatre and streaming. Some old-school voices in the theatre believe that allowing people to watch stage shows from the comfort of their own homes would disincentivize them from showing up to see shows in person. More progressive voices in the community argue that by giving audiences opportunities to stay excited about theatre in between trips to see shows only makes them more and more excited to see the real thing live and in person.
One company that is looking to bridge that gap is BroadwayHD, which launched in 2015 and has been a platform for filmed theatrical productions and stage-to-screen adaptations ever since. Anne Hathaway, similar to her character Patricia in Rebecca Miller’s “She Came to Me,” has dealt with being a perfectionist.
“I think perhaps in the earlier part of my life, I believed a little bit more in perfectionism,” Hathaway told Variety at the New York screening of “She Came to Me” on Tuesday night. “[Patricia] thinks that if she can just do everything right, she’ll protect the people who she loves from having bad things happen to them.”
Set in New York, the rom-com follows composer Steven Lauddem (Peter Dinklage), who is creatively blocked just weeks before the deadline for his latest commission. At the urging of his wife and former therapist Patricia (Hathaway), he searches for inspiration and finds it in Katrina (Marisa Tomei), a thrill-seeking tugboat captain.
Hathaway and director-writer Miller discussed bringing nuance to Patricia, a seemingly put-together, type A wife and mother on the verge of mental collapse.
