Dwayne Johnson is getting a raw deal from people who think he's not black enough to play John Henry ... according to Roger Aaron Brown, who had the role back in the '90s. Roger played John Henry in the 1995 movie 'Tall Tale,' and tells us he doesn't have a problem with The Rock stepping into his shoes. He tells us there's way more to the role than being African-American, so complaints Dwayne's skin isn't dark enough are nonsense.

It's no surprise that the decade that gave us Gordon Gekko and his infamous quote, "Greed is good," would be rife with films unpacking heavy social topics like police brutality, social inequality, ultra-violence, and in the case of Graham Baker's Alien Nation, racial tension, tolerance, and acceptance. Somehow I missed this film, despite it being the topic of conversation in many sci-fi and horror circles, not to mention that it influenced many other movies in the genre, from Neill Blomkamp's District 9 to last year's Bright, directed by David Ayer. It also spawned a number of Alien Nation-related products, including a series of comics and novels, a TV series on Fox by the same name that ran for one season in 1989, and five TV movies. So, without further ado, as the movie poster suggests, prepare yourselves for a dive into a buddy cop sci-fi action movie with a solid cast of characters,...

We chat to The Imitation Game and Headhunters director Morten Tyldum about working with Benedict Cumberbatch and more...
Norwegian director Morten Tyldum's previous film Headhunters was a precisely-sharpened stiletto of a thriller. Based on a novel by Jo Nesbo, it was ostensibly about an art thief whose desire to maintain a lavish lifestyle got him into deep, murderous trouble. But beneath the surface, it was about a deeply insecure man who believed that maintaining the appearance of being rich and successful was the only thing that would keep his statuesque wife from leaving him.
Violent, blackly funny and directed with real pace by Tyldum, Headhunters brought the filmmaker to global attention. Tyldum's latest film is a very different one: it's the fascinating, sad story of Alan Turing, the mathematician whose pioneering work greatly affected the outcome of World War II. Cumberbatch is typically effective in the lead role as Turing,...

The highest-grossing film Norwegian film of all time is now the basis for a new HBO drama. Headhunters, based on a 2008 Jo Nesbø novel that was later turned into an excellent (and rather twisted) thriller-comedy by director Morten Tyldum in 2011, is now in development to become an hour-long series on the cable network.
Originally, Summit Entertainment was going to remake the Norwegian thriller into an English-language version that had Mark Wahlberg attached and Sacha Gervasi (Anvil! The Story of Anvil) set to direct. However, when Lionsgate bought Summit, they decided to bring the story to cable rather than to the big screen. Alexander Woo (True Blood) will executive produce the series and write the pilot for producer Carolyn Strauss.

If “Fast Five” taught us nothing else, it’s that if you want to immeasurably improve an action film, all you need to do is throw The Rock at it. But what do you do if The Rock is already in your action movie? Well, you hire an up-and-coming European actor, of course. Aksel Hennie starred in last year’s “Headhunters” alongside “Game of Thrones" star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, which debuted to great reviews and grossed a healthy $15 million worldwide on its way to securing a BAFTA nomination. Hennie was excellent in it as the weasely anti-hero Roger Brown, and his reward seems to be a fun-sounding role in Brett Ratner’s forthcoming “Hercules” with Dwayne Johnson. Hennie will play Tydeus in the MGM-Paramount movie, a twin-axe wielding warrior who is devoted to Johnson’s Hercules. He’s apparently also such a madman that he needs to be chained up at night while he sleeps.

He made a splash – in more ways than one – in last year’s excellent Norwegian thriller Headhunters as Roger Brown, and Aksel Hennie has well and truly stuck Hollywood’s radar. He’s now landed a role on Brett Ratner’s Hercules. The film, adapted by Ryan Condal and Evan Spiliotopoulos from Steve Moore’s Radical Studios comic, will see Dwayne Johnson as the legendary demi-god. Only, um, without the demi-god bit. In this story, Hercules is a mortal, albeit powerful man (come on, he’s being played by The Rock, it’s not like he’s a wimp) who agrees to help the Thracian king whip his army into fighting shape. But the task is not as easy as it first sounds for our hero and his men.Hennie will bring some of his on-screen energy to Tydeus, a warrior who is devoted to Hercules, is known for swinging...

To get things started, dear reader; I would like to say that I write this article with frustration. I’m tired. Tired of scouring through websites, day after day, seeing criticism for a certain game that hit shelves in October – Assassin’s Creed 3. Each time I see one of these ‘critics’, they start with the exact same sentence each time; “I had high hopes for this game, but…”
Why? Why does this continue to happen? I hope here, in this page, I can somehow put an end to this unfair, and just wrong, slating of a game that should be commended for what it has done, relighting the flame of a series close to death, and showing us that the current generation of gaming will never expand without some sort of evolution. Simply put, this article is about the mistreatment of a phenomenal game.
Why’s the game so bad?...

South by Southwest (SXSW) is just one of many film festivals, we here at Sound On Sight cover yearly. The fest, which takes place every spring in Austin, Texas, began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. The fest announced the first wave of films back in early January, and the lineup included some highly anticipated films such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Evil Dead, Downloaded and Spring Breakers. Now the full lineup has been announced, and it just might be one of the best lineups the festival has ever programmed.
SXSW takes place March 8-16 in Austin Texas. Here are just some of the films we are excited about.
Narrative Feature Competition – This year’s 8 films were selected from 1,191 submissions. Each film is a World Premiere.

Often better than the films themselves, and always shorter – take a look at some of the best trailers last year had to offer
The last year has been host to a multitude of excellent film trailers, from the action-packed Avengers through to The Woman in Black and the cutely animated Lorax. Nevermind the films themselves, this year the trailer has come into its own. Here are five of my favourites:
The Dark Knight Rises
2012 saw the epic conclusion to the Dark Knight trilogy, and with it one of the best trailers of recent years. Combining everything we'd come to expect from Christopher Nolan's Batverse, there was action, romance, a snippet of Michael Caine's moving speech … By revealing only fragments of his masterpiece, Nolan left the audience wanting more. The anticipation excited by the full-length trailer was excruciating, and thankfully the film delivered.

Last week saw a great handful of international releases make their way onto our shelves, with Shion Sono’s Himizu and David and Stéphane Foenkinos’ Delicacy topping the list. And this week brings us another excellent set of international films for our enjoyment, along with a handful of classics getting the HD treatment.
We’ve also been enjoying the special Blu-ray Steelbook releases from Play.com over the past few months, in tandem with Universal’s 100th Anniversary, and now Paramount are entering the fray with two titles of their own getting a Steelbook re-packaging, for their own Centenary celebrations.
My picks of the week:
Morten Tyldum’s Headhunters.
And the Blu-ray releases of Shion Sono’s Love Exposure & the Steven Spielberg-produced Falling Skies – Season 1.

Even the Rain; This Must Be the Place; Gone; Jo Nesbø's Headhunters
The personal and the political are perfectly balanced and blended in Even the Rain (2010, Dogwoof, 15), a thematically rich and visually impressive drama that was one of the standout treats of this year's Viva! Spanish and Latin American film festival in Manchester.
Directed by Icíar Bollaín and scripted by regular Ken Loach collaborator Paul Laverty, this follows the (mis)fortunes of a film crew arriving in Bolivia, where they plan to shoot an anti-imperialist drama about Columbus's exploitation of the New World. Gael García Bernal and Luis Tosar are the idealistic director and budget-conscious producer who run into conflicts of interest when the locals, whom they are paying a pittance to appear as extras, become involved in an increasingly bitter uprising against the privatisation of water. Should the historical message of the movie take precedence over the contemporary...

Headhunters
It's not just the UK that's in a thrall to the current wave of Scandinavian noir: this Jo Nesbø adaptation was exported to around 50 countries – a record for a Norwegian film.
While the police in these crime stories are all flawed and, to some extent defined by their mental conditions, be they depression, childhood trauma or Ocd, the criminals walk a more hubristic path. What's refreshing is that those on the wrong side of the law are not conveniently shaped and softened to make them more likable.
The main character here, Roger Brown, is pretty despicable all round. His professional life sees him using his natural arrogance as a headhunter for multinational concerns, selecting those as greedy and ruthless as himself for top level jobs. If that doesn't make you warm to him, he's also an art thief – all to keep himself in the lap of luxury. His potential...

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is impenetrable as Clas Greve in Headhunters
Not Nikolaj Caster-Waldau. He makes no justification for Clas Greve, the charming but ruthless assailant sent to test poor Roger Brown in the hit Norwegian thriller Headhunters (DVD release Monday 13 August).
It's all going so well for Brown, played with a galling intensity by Norway's number one box office star Aksel Hennie. He's married to the disparately glamorous Diana, funding her lifestyle with his job as a star recruitment consultant, supported by a bit of art-theft on the side - until he steals a supposed masterpiece from the wrong man, Mr Greve, and all hell breaks loose.

To celebrate the August 13th Blu-ray and DVD release of Headhunters we’ve got three Headhunters packs to give away consisting of the DVD, novel, and a t-shirt!
From the producers of the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Wallander, this is the first of international best-selling norwegian author Jo Nesbø’s novels (The Snowman, The Leopard), to be adapted for the screen and is expertly directed by Morten Tyldum (Buddy, Fallen Angels) into a cool, brutal thriller. Much like the Girl trilogy, there is an American remake in the works which has a lot to live up to.
In Headhunters, Roger Brown (Aksel Hennie) seems to have it all, an exceedingly beautiful wife and a luxurious villa and is a high flying, successful corporate headhunter. He’s the best in the business and he knows it. But one career is not enough to fund Brown’s extravagant...

Foreign crime novels have been all the rage. To this day, Stieg Larsson and his “Milennium Trilogy” books still stand on the New York Times Best Seller List over a year later. Yet, another interesting foreign crime writer has seen a rise to fame and is often compared to Larsson. Jo Nesbo first really made an impact with readers and the press when his book The Snowman finally saw a release here in the states this year. The writer has a penchant for crafting intriguing stories involving murder, hard-nosed detectives, and red-herrings around every page. However, it is another thrilling crime novel of Nesbo’s that will hit the big-screen first: Headhunters.

The writer has a penchant for crafting intriguing stories involving murder, hard-nosed detectives, and red-herrings around every page. However, it is another thrilling crime novel of Nesbo’s that will hit the big-screen first: Headhunters.
Between recruiting (headhunting) workers for top positions and buying his beautiful wife expensive jewelery,...

Headhunters
Directed by Morten Tyldum
Written by Lars Gudmestad, Jo Nesbø, and Ulf Ryberg
Norway, 2011
While American politicians abjectly deride the Scandinavians for being ‘pinko commies’, Hollywood has been taking notice of their considerable cinematic talent, finding every opportunity to import some of their best films for American remakes. David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Matt Reeves’ Let Me In are excellent examples, but no Scandinavian film will appeal to North American sensibilities more than Norway’s Headhunters.
The film stars Aksel Hennie as the titular headhunter, an enigma of a man who recruits corporate talent by day and steals valuable art pieces by night. When his wife (Synnøve Macody Lund), herself an art dealer, introduces him to an ex-intelligence mercenary turned electronics tycoon (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) at an art exhibit, his interest is piqued when he learns of the man’s possession of an invaluable painting.

Opening today in New York and Los Angeles, Morten Tyldum's Headhunters is a blast of chilly air, a sleek thriller that's even better than it looks. Askel Hennie stars as Roger Brown, a corporate headhunter who is married to a beautiful, accomplished woman (Synnøve Macody Lund). Feeling insecure about their relationship, he moonlights as an art thief, in large measure to satisfy what he perceives to be her taste for luxury. Enter Clas Greve (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), a debonair and handsome potential client, who, it happens, collects expensive pieces of art. The fun is just beginning ... Kurt Halfyard saw the film at the Toronto International Film Festival and started the love-fest rolling: Headhunters is a perfect blend of cautious planning, earnest intent, and amusing...

Editor’s Note: This review originally ran as part of our Fantastic Fest coverage, but it hits select theaters this weekend, so it’s time to check it out once more. Headhunters has an instinct about it that’s cutthroat with a smile. It’s a comedy of errors with a gun pointed at its head, and it all works with an intensity that manages to be thrilling right up to the end. In the movie, Roger Brown (Aksel Hennie) is in over his head (which he considers already too low to the ground) because he thinks his wife (Synnøve Macody Lund) needs the finer things in life. He’s a well-respected job placement rep, connecting the highest salaries to the biggest companies, but he has to supplement his lifestyle by stealing art. When he catches wind of a new client (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) with a criminal career-endingly expensive lost masterpiece, he...

This is so good already Hollywood.s already steaming ahead on an Americanized / non captioned version likely to star Mark Wahlberg. Headhunters . the original - is the latest in a wave of spare, verging on minimalist Norwegian crime films that lean to nature noir. The heat.s turned up right off the bat and it.s a fast ride through a few days in the life of a man used to pulling off fast ones to cover up for his inadequacies. He.s a cad, a jerk, a creep, and without any redeeming qualities, and we have no reasons to feel anything for him. He is Roger Brown (Aksel Hennie) a short man obsessed with appearing bigger, at least psychically. He...

What makes a leading man a hero? Is it good looks, brains, someone who can win a fight or take down the bad guy, saving the day? What if your leading man doesn’t possess those qualities, is he still considered the hero of the hour if he has his flaws whether they be his own making or not… Inspired by the release of Jo Nesbo’s Headhunters, we take a look at some of the least likely heroes to ever triumph on film.
Roger, Headhunters (2011)
In Jo Nesbo’s Headhunters, the Nordic noir thriller based on the best-selling novel, the film’s leading man the charismatic Roger Brown played by Aksel Hennie is your typical anti-hero. Standing at 5.5”, he is a successful corporate headhunter by day and a prolific art thief by night. Obviously, I've never contemplated stealing art, but I did see some interesting parallels with recruitment in Brown's five rules of theft
I can't say my own salary and lifestyle quite match those of Roger Brown, the headhunter in this enjoyable – if a tad violent – film based on the Jo Nesbø novel. He's the top headhunter in Norway, and has the beautiful wife and lavish apartment to prove it. Here's a man who can splash out £40,000 on a pair of earrings before dinner.
But Brown is also an art thief: he robs his rich, high-flying job candidates of their paintings, having found out lots of helpful personal details about their homes and circumstances during his interviews with them. Obviously, that's not something I'd contemplate, but I did see some interesting parallels with recruitment in Brown's five rules of theft. "Learn everything about a target," he says. That's something you must do with candidates.

Jo Nesbø's novel has been expertly transformed into a cool, brutal, deeply Scandinavian thriller
The cinema, as Karl Marx might have said, repeats itself, first as a Scandinavian thriller, then as a Hollywood remake. An American company acquired the rights to remake Morten Tyldum's Headhunters while it was still in production. They'll have trouble in making a movie half as good or half as authentic.
Although inevitably indebted to American models, Headhunters is firmly rooted in the Scandinavian experience, and it moves with the speed of a demented lemming heading for the cliff-edge of a fjord. The film is adapted from a novel by Jo Nesbø, the Norwegian crime writer who is now up there beside the Swedes Henning Mankell and Stieg Larsson, and the screenplay is the work of Lars Gudmestad and Ulf Ryberg, old hands at this kind of thing, the latter having adapted novels by both Mankell and Larsson.

Norwegian noir could be the new Swedish suspense – but not if this schlocky Jo Nesbø adaptation sets the tone
If the producers of this movie have their way, Norwegian noir will be the new Stockholm suspense. Following in Stieg Larsson's footsteps, this is the first adaptation of king of the airport thriller, Jo Nesbø. The plot pits cocky recruitment consultant Roger Brown (Aksel Hennie) against espionage executive Clas Greve (Game of Thrones's Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). It's a duel to the death, ostensibly over a stolen painting, while there's also a moral somewhere about modern capitalism. But the film doesn't merit chinstroking: it's stuffed with Troma-style riffs around schlock, gore and human effluvia, bookended by Shallow Grave-like sections full of cynical machinations. The parts barely relate, never mind work together.

Tee-hee! Headhunters is a hilarious satire on male inadequacy disguised as an outrageously violent crime thriller. It’s all the dick-measuring and overcompensating elevated out of the subtext to actively fuel the humor and the suspense... and it’s about time someone did that. Roger Brown (Aksel Hennie) is a successful corporate recruiter in Oslo, but his terror at the merely imagined prospect of losing his gorgeous and ambitious wife, Diana (Synnøve Macody Lund), has “forced” him to overspend and overinvest -- as in the art gallery she’s just opened -- in order to keep her in the lavish lifestyle to which he has accustomed her. He subsidizes his own self-induced psychological terror through art theft. You know, as one does. He’s got a truly clever scam worked out that allows him to be a smooth, sophisticated cat burglar and steal valuable works of art without the victim...

Here’s an exclusive behind the scenes interview with Nikolaj Coster Waldau from Game of Thrones for his new film Jo Nesbo’s Headhunters, the Scandinavian thriller based on the best selling novel which is released across the UK from tomorrow.

On Wednesday evening I, along with many other London film fans, had the pleasure of attending The Jameson Cult Film Club’s pre-screening of Jo Nesbo’s Headhunters at London’s fabulous Saatchi Gallery.
This film is based around the charming Roger Brown (Askel Hennie) who leads a double life, unbeknown to his beautiful wife Diana (Synnove Lund), as both a successful head-hunter and an accomplished art thief by night. This thrilling film was surprisingly gripping as Roger is thrown in to a dangerous life on the run after being involved in his riskiest heist so far.

My only prior knowledge of Jo Nesbø was that posters for his books seemed to crop up on the underground with alarming rapidity a couple of years ago when The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series’ popularity peaked. Clearly, I thought with cynicism, some wily publisher is cashing in on the current interest in Scandinavian literature. Of course, that meant it was only a matter of time before Nesbø’s work started appearing on screen too. I hadn’t learnt any more about Nesbø between noticing those posters and prior to the screening of Headhunters (until writing this review, I had assumed Nesbø was a woman), other than that there is, apparently Nesbø-themed pornography urbanely entitled ‘Jo Lesbo’.
So I had little to no expectations going into Headhunters. The...

Earlier this year, Mark Wahlberg already dipped into the remake barrel with Contrband, a stateside version of Reykjavik-Rotterdam, an Icelandic action thriller from 2008. Now the star of The Fighter is looking to another foreign property for his next project as The Shortlist has learned that Wahlberg is looking to take on a remake of Headhunters, a Norwegian thriller based on Jo Nesbø's novel of the same name, which was just recently published here in the United States. In October, it was revealed that Summit Entertainment is behind the remake, and Wahlberg has apparently met with both the director and studio. For those just joining us, here's the book's official synopsis: Roger Brown is a corporate headhunter, and he’s a master of his profession. But one career simply can’t support his luxurious lifestyle and his wife’s fledgling art gallery. At an art opening one night he meets Clas Greve,...

As any die-hard thriller lover will tell you, Jo Nesbo is a pretty big deal. Heralded as the next Stieg Larsson years ago, only now are his novels being turned into films, notably 2008's Headhunters, or to use its original name, Hodejegerne.Released in his homeland of Norway and bought up by 50 different countries, Headhunters is now set to hit British shores, with a release date set for April 6.Starring Aksel Hennie in the lead role of Roger Brown, the film tells the tale of a successful headhunter / art thief who meets his match when he steals a painting from a former mercenary, Clas Greve (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) - a man he's also seeking to set up as the head of a firm.Today we've got a poster for you to enjoy, and without any further ado, here it is.And before you ask, yes, yes indeed, it's already being lined up for a Hollywood remake.

Headhunters (Hodejegerne)
Directed by Morten Tyldum
Written by Lars Gudmestad, Jo Nesbø, and Ulf Ryberg
Norway, 2011
Adapted from a novel by the acclaimed Norwegian writer Jo Nesbø, Headhunters is an original thriller filled with surprises. Initially disguised as a heist film, the story quickly transforms into a brutal test of wills that pushes the lead beyond his breaking point.
