Tay Keith has worked with Future, Travis Scott, and even Beyoncé, not to mention nearly every major artist from his hometown of Memphis. But there’s one name he puts before anyone else. “Making beats for Drake was and still is my main priority,” says the 26-year-old producer. “He put me on and is why I’m here in the industry now, so he always gets all my new beats. He gotta hear them before I send them to anybody.”

“Fauda,” “False Flag” and “No Man’s Land” producer Maria Feldman is teaming with Israeli director Dror Shaul on “The Collective,” an epic drama series set against the background of the early history of one of Israel’s best known institutions: the kibbutz.
Created, written and to be directed by Shaul, “The Collective” is set up at Feldman’s New York and Israel-based Masha, out of which she co-created and produced for Hulu and Arte the Fremantle-sold “No Man’s Land,” a standout in Series Mania’s main competition last year. This year, Feldman served on the jury of Series Mania’s Forum Co-Pro Pitching Sessions.
Now being written by Dror, “The Collective” marks his return in an extended narrative form to the kibbutz setting of his two huge hits, the 50-minute “Operation Grandma,” (“Mivtsa Savta”), which won the Israeli Academy Award and became a cult film in Israel; and 2007’s “Sweet Mud,...

In 1969, Tony Joe White released what would become his signature song, the grooving, growling “Polk Salad Annie.” A cautionary tale about a Southern girl from a family of miscreants, it’d be covered by everyone from Elvis Presley to the Foo Fighters, who re-created “Polk Salad Annie” with White himself on David Letterman in 2014.
White died last year at 75, but a few months before his passing, he re-recorded the Top 10 hit at his Leipers Fork, Tennessee, studio with blues guitarist Robert Cray. Produced by White’s son Jody, the 50th...

Just as the popular portrayal of Johnny Cash as a lawless hellraiser overlooks a nuanced man’s love of faith and family, painting 80-year-old Country Music Hall of Fame inductee Ray Stevens as just a comedy act undercuts his decades of work as a producer, businessman and multi-Grammy-winning singer of serious country and gospel songs.
Stevens’ role as an ambassador for country music began as soon as the Atlanta-area native inked his first record deal in 1957. Beyond making a mark with “Ahab the Arab” and other early-career novelty sides, Stevens...

Visionary record producer, label executive and music publisher Fred Foster, who guided the early careers of Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, among many others, died Wednesday in Nashville following a short illness. He was 87.
The founder of Monument Records, which released Parton’s first hit single, “Dumb Blonde,” in 1967, as well as Kristofferson’s early country-pop hit “Why Me” in 1973, Foster was responsible for producing a string of Roy Orbison’s best-known songs in the early Sixties, including “Only the Lonely,” “Running Scared,” “Blue Bayou,” “Crying” and the 1964 classic “Oh,...

Singer-songwriter Tony Joe White, a prolific tunesmith whose swamp-soaked 1968 pop hit “Polk Salad Annie,” reflected his Louisiana upbringing, died yesterday, Wednesday, October 24th, of natural causes at his home in Leipers Fork, Tennessee, just outside Nashville. He was 75.
White, who had a Top Ten record with “Polk Salad Annie,” also saw it popularized by Elvis Presley. He was also perhaps best known as the writer of the deeply atmospheric and soulful “Rainy Night in Georgia,” a Number Four pop hit for Brook Benton in 1970 and covered by a number of...

A review of tonight's Mr. Robot coming up just as soon as my DJ career gets me free trips... "I can't beat you. And you can't beat me." -Elliot Earlier today, Sam Esmail tweeted the following: Ahead of tonight's #MrRobot I want to apologize for the extra long ep (again). Next week will be shorter. Again, sorry for being so long-win — Sam Esmail (@samesmail) July 27, 2016 This is a self-aware and funny tweet (note how it ends), and hopefully a sign that Esmail realizes he's taken too much advantage of the free hand USA has given him this year. Even if you want to treat the premiere as two separate episodes, they still aired on the same night, meaning all three weeks of this season have featured viewing experiences that ran around 90 minutes with commercials. Without ads, tonight's ep was an hour and 5 minutes, which is longer than even the great...

Dinah Washington (8/29/24-12/14/63) was one of the last great examples of female blues singers regularly working in a jazz band context. Many aficionados would say that she was surpassed in this style only by Bessie Smith. First Issue: The Dinah Washington Story, the two-cd set that proudly features the commemorative stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service in 1993 to mark the 30th anniversary of her premature death at age 39 (from an overdose of alcohol and diet pills), offers the finest overview of Washington's artistry, ranging from her first records under her own name in 1943 to her classic material for the Verve, Mercury, EmArcy, and Wing labels from 1946 through 1961 (with at least one item from every year in that span), missing only her last two years, when she was on Roulette.
As vocalist expert Chris Albertson's liner notes observe, "Dinah was a gospel, blues, pop, and jazz singer all rolled into one,...

Letters Of Note has a wonderful find up today from the depths of Keith Richards' autobiography "Life," a letter an 18-year-old Richards wrote to his aunt describing a cool new friend he made who's "got every Chuck Berry record ever."
"You know I was keen on Chuck Berry and I thought I was the only fan for miles but one mornin' on Dartford Stn. (that's so I don't have to write a long word like station) I was holding one of Chuck's records when a guy I knew at primary school 7-11 yrs y'know came up to me. He's got every record Chuck Berry ever made and all his mates have too, they are all rhythm and blues fans, real R&B I mean (not this Dinah Shore, Brook Benton crap) Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Chuck, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker all the Chicago bluesmen real lowdown stuff, marvelous.

What should the "American Idol" Top 10 sing for the R&B/Soul week? Make your picks here.
Even though Usher kinda spilled the "Idol" mentoring beans over the weekend, it was officially announced during the Wednesday, March 24 results show that he would be mentoring the Top 10 for R&B/Soul week.
We love that R&B/Soul reaches way back into Motown because some of the non-Michael Lynche singers need some oldies thrown in there.
The song list is available here, but here is the whole list:
* A Song For Momma - Boyz II Men

* Ain't Too Proud to Beg - The Temptations
* Angel of Mine - Monica
