I love a good Batman movie as much as the next person, but one thing that's always bugged me is how often Bruce Wayne is treated as a bit of a cipher in his own story. Screenwriters and directors are all too eager to get to the more entertaining business of the supervillains, repeatedly giving us the hoary old imagery of his parents' murder and the billionaire moping around his mansion before we get to the fun stuff.
That flaw is comprehensively addressed in "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm," the 1993 theatrical release originating from the Emmy-Award-winning animated TV series. To date, it is the only Batman film to fully invest in Bruce Wayne and his shadowy alter ego as a character just as interesting as Gotham City's colorful gallery of crooks.
The stylized animation gives us a hunky Bruce Wayne who literally puts the square jaw into the term "square-jawed hero,...

Welcome to Paramount+, home of the “Good Burger 2” movie. May Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell take your order?
Paramount+ has ordered up a sequel to the ’90s-kid classic film “Good Burger.” Both Thompson and Mitchell are coming back to reprise their respective roles as Dexter Reed and Ed, reuniting the Nickelodeon comedy duo more than 25 years after the first movie’s release.
“I can’t believe it’s been a little over 25 years since great customer service was born at Good Burger! Being a part of something so many generations of people have come to love has made me so proud and now to be back where it all began working on the sequel is surreal,” Thompson said in a statement shared with IndieWire. “Love performing with my brother Kel and can’t wait to show the fans what these characters have been up to since we last saw them.

The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon had a strange experience on Tuesday night when his name suddenly became trending, but not from a segment on his daily talk show.
Fallon was the victim of a death hoax when the hashtag #RIPJimmyFallon suddenly popped up. The host himself eventually commented on the issue by trying to appeal to Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk, for help.
Elon, can you fix this? #RIPJimmyFallon
— Jimmy Fallon (@jimmyfallon) November 16, 2022
Despite Fallon’s request, Musk responded somewhat smarmily with, “Fix What?” and then tagged the account for the site’s Community Notes feature.

We’ve previously talked about how Cohen made the concept of a killer baby work in It’s Alive, now find out how he made the idea of deadly dessert work by checking out the video embedded above!
The Stuff has the following synopsis:
It’s smooth and creamy! It’s delicious! It isn’t filling! It’s taken the country by storm… and it kills! It’s The Stuff! The newest taste sensation is outselling ice cream two-to-one and merchants can’t keep up with the voracious demand. In...

Sure, they may have eaten a person back in the day. But there are some things the grown women of Yellowjackets just wouldn’t do. On this, the actresses who play them — Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, Melanie Lynskey and Christina Ricci — agree, as they gather in a backyard in L.A.’s Topanga Canyon in late July, just a few weeks before they start filming the second season of their breakout show.
The Showtime survival thriller, created and executive produced by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, earned seven Emmy nominations, including outstanding drama series and acting nominations for Lynskey and Ricci. The Yellowjackets storyline alternates between 1996 and the present day as it follows members of a high school girls soccer team whose plane crashes and strands them for 19 months in the wilderness, where they resort to cannibalism to survive.

“The Godfather,” wrote the late Roger Ebert in 2010, “comes closest to being a film everyone agrees about.” Who can disagree? By all known markers of Hollywood and, more impressively, world cinema success, Francis Ford Coppola’s beloved gangster chronicle is an enduring cultural object. Audiences loved it, then and now; same to critics the world over, who’ve canonized this movie, its 1974 sequel, and Coppola’s Apocalypse Now — all of them made in the Seventies, a 10-year span that has publicly defined Coppola’s career ever since — as among the greatest films of all time.

“I should have killed Andy.” – Jimmy McDonough
In 1987 Andy Milligan was working on his latest film, a bloody revenge saga with a Frankenstein theme called Monstrosity. His biographer Jimmy McDonough was by his side, working the clapper, absorbing Milligan’s abuse, and taking notes on the final years of the director, still a poisonous devil when the mood took him. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1929, dead 62 years later in Los Angeles, Milligan wore his resentments like a crown, shoveling contempt on anyone who crossed his path—including his audience.

From “The Godfather,” to “Dog Day Afternoon,” “Serpico,” and “Scarface,” Al Pacino is one of the greatest actors to ever grace the silver screen. He’s worked with prolific directors, received nine Oscars nominations — though he’s only won once, and fashioned the kind of acting career that’s worth celebrating over and over again.

Movies have been around since the late 19th century, but only now — after more than 100 years of failure — has someone finally made one that hinges on the invention of a ray gun that replaces anyone it shoots with the nearest available chicken. The device is called “The Chicken Replace-inator,” and it’s the latest weapon created by the mad scientist Dr. Doofenshmirtz (of Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated fame) in his never-ending quest to kill the fedora-wearing secret agent who always foils his plans and also happens to be a platypus — Perry the platypus.
The cackling lovechild of Abe Vigoda and the Wicked Witch of the West, Doofenshmirtz has come up with all sorts of cockamamie schemes to destroy Perry over the years — one for each of the 222 episodes of “Phineas and Ferb” that aired on the Disney Channel between 2007 and 2015 — but the Chicken Replace-inator has to be among the dumbest and most inspired.

Can you believe that Joyce DeWitt is now in her 70s? The popular actress started acting on stage at the age of 13 and things just kept progressing as she finished high school and then went off to college before being directed to UCLA for the theater program. Contrary to popular belief she was never mentored by Abe Vigoda and the two apparently never met. It’s strange how rumors get going, but this one was debunked quite a while ago. Joyce actually took a break from acting from 1984 to 1991 but has been going fairly steady since then and

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is easily one of the best Batman films that has been made, especially to those of us who grew up watching Batman: The Animated Series.
It’s been twenty-five years since the movie was released in theaters and to celebrate the occasion the movie is getting a theatrical re-release for one day only thanks to Fathom Events.
Your chance to see the movie on the big screen will happen on Monday, November 12th. I also included a special trailer that was released promoting the special event screening that fans won’t want to miss!
In this animated feature set in the 1940s, the troubled yet heroic Batman (Kevin Conroy) is pitted against a mysterious figure who is rubbing out Gotham City's most dangerous criminals, and who many believe is the caped crusader himself. What’s your earliest horror memory, the moment you were irreversibly scarred yet knew you had to see and know more? Which one imprinted on you at a stupidly impressionable age? Do you remember? Because I never could; save for one indelible image burned on my psyche at the age of five, I have searched, asked, and pleaded with so many people what possible movie could have done this to me as a child. Until last night that is, when I stumbled upon The Devil’s Daughter (1973), an ABC TV movie that finally put a name to the image, even if I did somewhat misremember it. Time plus kindertrauma equals new memories, I guess? Yay to ongoing decrepitude!
Originally airing on January 9th as an ABC Tuesday Movie of the Week, The Devil’s Daughter was up against Hawaii Five-o over on CBS while NBC rolled out their own Tuesday Night at the Movies.

“May you live to be a thousand years old, sir.” Still the most widely unheralded great movie on the books, John Patrick Shanley’s lightweight/profound fable is an unmitigated delight. See Tom Hanks at the end of the first phase of his career plus Meg Ryan in an unacknowledged career highlight. How can a movie be so purposely insubstantial, and yet be ‘heavier’ than a dozen pictures with ‘big things to say?’

2016 was utterly brutal for any number of reasons, but one of the biggest is the way that iconic and beloved celebrities were taken from us left and right. It lent an air of sorrow to the year, and with awards season in full swing, we’re now getting a few more opportunities to remember the people who have died.
At tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, the “In Memoriam” segment was especially mournful because it wasn’t a tribute from a larger organization like the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences, but a tribute from and for actors—as indicated by the way it was introduced by SAG President Gabrielle Carteris, who referenced an Alan Rickman quote. We saw remembrances for Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, and Mary Tyler Moore, of course, but also Anton Yelchin, Abe Vigoda, Prince, and Garry Marshall.

2016-12-28T14:57:00-08:00Taking Its Toll: 2016 Was a Brutal Year for Celebrity Deaths
As 2016 draws to a close, plenty of TV and movie fans are glad to see it go, given how many big-name celebrities have passed away since last January. There is, however, a chorus of naysayers who point out that lots of celebrities die every year, and 2016 was no different. Is it true, then, that the last calendar year took more stars than usual away from us?
In short, yes, it's true. Yes, every year dozens of people you might have heard of pass away, but 2016 was atypical in the number of deaths of celebrities who created iconic roles or had otherwise been at the top of their fields.
The year was particularly hard on legends of the music world, and more than one of those musical stars had a big impact on the film world,...

2016 has seen more than its fair share of celebrity deaths, with every aspect of culture impacted: music (Prince, David Bowie), sports (Muhammad Ali), politics (John Glenn) and too many others to count. That includes movies, of course, and Turner Classic Movies has released its annual “TCM Remembers” video to commemorate the silver-screen stars who’ve left us this year. One sincerely hopes that no one else joins their ranks over the next two weeks.

Now there's something you don't see too often — an Emmy night that actually makes good television. The Emmys are usually one of those pop-culture Zen koans: Why is an award show for TV such a painful little hate-watch? But this year's model was easily the most entertaining Emmy bash since Conan O'Brien hosted in 2008, a welcome change after last year's debacle. Jimmy Kimmel kept things moving and got the whole event done and dusted in three hours — with a minute or two to spare, actually. Yes, there was still plenty...

I should know - he gave me my career. And I will tell you that anybody who was lucky enough to meet him, he changed their life," shared Winkler of Marshall, who died in July. "On behalf of all of us,...

"It's really exciting and such an amazing group in front of and behind the camera. Everyone's very gracious. It's just a lot of fun." But that's probably that's probably the only time you'll hear the finale described as "fun." The Emmy winner is playing Gary Munson, a corrections officer arrested for sexually assaulting...

Abe Vigoda's daughter is furious that her father's name was left out of the Oscars "In Memoriam" segment last night. The Oscars fell short in many ways and as my father Abe Vigoda said the Oscars have earned, 'one demerit.' " Vigoda, who's death had been falsely reported numerous times,...

Every year the Oscars "In Memoriam" tribute leaves out one or two big names who died in the previous year. The Internet noticed that "Godfather" star Abe Vigoda was missing from the 2016 telecast; he just died in late January 2016, but the show managed to include Alan Rickman and David Bowie, who also just died in January. In terms of actors who died in 2015, there was no mention of Geoffrey Lewis, who had hundreds of screen credits, including roles in many Clint Eastwood movies.
Lewis died on April 7, 2015, and -- at the time -- his daughter, actress Juliette Lewis, shared a touching tribute to her dad. So you could understand if she was upset that the Oscars didn't include her father in the tribute. But she kept things classy and positive in a series of tweets and retweets:
I know @TheAcademy didn't mean to overlook my dad #GeoffreyLewis in the memorium.

Remember the old days when unpredictable occurrences seemed to predictably occur at the Oscars ceremony? There was the nude streaker who failed to unravel the ever-unflappable David Niven. There were the political activist winners who used the forum to grandstand for their favorite causes. This included Vanessa Redgrave's pro-Palestinian, anti-Zionist remarks during her acceptance speech, Marlon Brando sending a surrogate to reject his "Godfather" Oscar in protest of Hollywood's treatment of Native Americans, "Patton" winner George C. Scott refusing to show up at all in protest of the competitive nature of awards shows, the producers of the anti-Vietnam War documentary "Hearts and Minds" taking solace that that the nation was about to be "liberated" by a brutal communist regime, which caused another stir when Frank Sinatra was pushed on stage at Bob Hope's urging to read a hastily-scribbled denouncement of the remark. It's official: Chris Rock needs to host the Oscars every year. The whole idea of other hosts has been tried, and it has failed, from the soul-withering void that was James Franco to the locust plague they call Seth MacFarlane. Why would you ever not call Rock for this gig? Ellen DeGeneres and Steve Martin are always welcome, but Rock is just the undisputed king of award-show hosts, and despite all the other things he can do, lampooning a roomful of bloated Hollywood egos is what he does best. Abe Vigoda has many credits to his name, and one of them, too, should be his frequent late-night appearances. Vigoda was a favorite of Conan O'Brien, so when news of Abe Vigoda's death broke (yes, really) it was only fitting that the late-night host pay tribute to the man who appeared in so many guises: Abe Viyoda, as a Vigodal eclipse, Christmas-tree Vigoda, and hitchhiker Vigoda. Best known as Detective Phil Fish from the Barney Miller TV series and its spin-off, Fish, Abe Vigoda passed away today, January 26, at the age of 94. This character actor appeared on the now-cancelled soap operas Dark Shadows, As the World Turns, and Santa Barbara. He also recurred in three episodes of the 2000 comedy series, Manhattan Az, which was cancelled by USA Network, before his episodes aired.
Although coming to TV and film later in his career, Mr. Vigoda had a list of credits a mile long. Arguably, his two biggest roles were in The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II films, as mafioso Sal Tessio, of Don Corleone's organization. Vigoda would later voice the character for a number of Godfather-themed video games.

"The Godfather" star Abe Vigoda has died, aged 94.
The character actor passed away in his sleep at his home in New Jersey on Tuesday morning (January 26), his daughter Carol Vigoda Fuchs tells The Associated Press.
The Brooklyn, New York native began acting in the theatre as a teen and went on to establish himself with parts in Broadway productions of Marat/Sade, The Man in the Glass Booth, Inquest, and Tough to Get Help.
However, his breakout role came after he was cast as veteran mobster Salvatore Tessio in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather in 1972.
He also featured in a flashback sequence at the end of The Godfather Part II, and later became known for his portrayal of Detective Sergeant Phil Fish on 1970s sitcom Barney Miller and its spin-off series, Fish.
Vigoda's other film credits include Cannonball Run II, Look Who's Talking, and Joe Versus the Volcano.

Abe Vigoda, whose hang-dog expression and low-key mannerisms help propel him to fame, has passed away at age 94. Vigoda toiled in films and TV without notable success until director Francis Ford Coppola cast him in the key role of Tessio, a mob lieutenant in the Corleone crime family in the 1972 classic "The Godfather". Tessio was one of the most trusted "employees" of the Corleone family but following the death of its patriarch Vito Corleone, Tessio is discovered to be planning the assassination of the new godfather, Michael Corleone. La Times the Academy has clarified some of its new rulings on membership due to confusion from within its own ranks - very useful info
In Contention Kris Tapley has some thoughts on that as well and depressingly mentions there is still talk of "expanding" the acting categories. This will be very hard for yours truly to stomach if it happens. Traditions are important (and no I dont mean traditions of discrimination - don't confuse the issue!). Changing an 80 year tradition of a set of five slots in no way helps diversity and may actually serve to make the Academy look much much worse sending an accidental message (you weren't good enough for five but maybe with seven -- oops you weren't good enough for seven either!) so I pray to all the cinematic gods that wiser heads prevail and they reject it.
Fistful of Films... speaking of working through something by talking about it.
