On a brisk April afternoon in the East Village, Griffin Dunne steps through a portal to his past. He has hustled up the stairs of an East Village tenement too old for elevators despite its gentrified gleam. The hallways are narrow but clean and the doors look modern, new — until we arrive at the apartment we’re seeking. Layers of chipped paint speak of the passage of decades. The threshold is uneven — an entry to an era of slanting wooden floors, fire escape patios and bathrooms the size of closets. Inside, hats of fantastic shapes and sizes dot the blue walls, and everywhere there are books and flyers about Blondie, the Pyramid Club, Candy Darling, David Wojnarowicz, etc. Here is the habitat of a performance artist, impeccably preserved for decades and in fact still very much in use.

Here we are with another case of “Wait, that was a book first?” Although, having watched the movie for the first time and seeing its reputation online, this is also a case of “Wait, that was a movie?” William Friedkin was a master filmmaker and although most of his stone-cold classics happened before 1990, he proved he still had plenty in the tank with things like The Hunted and Bug to name a couple. He was a replacement director which seems surreal considering his talents and he was one of 3 credited writers on a little remembered horror movie adaptation from 1990. The Guardian (watch it Here) is based on The Nanny from 1987 and it’s a strange pairing of source material and finished product. Both pieces of media are mostly slept on in their respective fields but how close did Friedkin and the other writers come to matching the book? Always do...

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about lotsa shows including Ghosts, Ripley, S.W.A.T. and Law & Order: Organized Crime!

In case you somehow missed it, the 1,000th episode of the NCISverse is upcoming.
That will be NCIS Season 21 Episode 7, airing on CBS at 9 p.m. Monday, April 15.
The event was heralded by an Entertainment Tonight special hosted by Kevin Frazier, which aired April 8 on CBS. It's likely still available on streaming service Paramount+.
NCIS has been on 21 seasons, NCIS: Los Angeles lasted 14 seasons, and NCIS: New Orleans seven. NCIS: Hawaii is in its third season, while NCIS: Sydney recently finished its first season. You do the math to get to 999.
So, as the NCISverse's 1,000th episode approaches, would now be the peak for the franchise, with two spinoffs airing this season and two new spinoffs planned for next season?
Not at all, although this certainly could be seen as the golden age of NCIS Recycling, which admittedly is at least in vogue now.

Stephen King made it very well known that he wasn’t a fan of Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of his book The Shining, so seventeen years later he took the chance to bring the story to the screen himself. He wrote the script for a three-part mini-series that was directed by Mick Garris and aired on ABC back in 1997 – and tomorrow, March 12th, Scream Factory is giving the mini-series version of The Shining a Blu-ray release! Copies are available for purchase at This Link.
The mini-series version of The Shining has the following synopsis: Jack Torrance and his family move into the sprawling, vacant Overlook Hotel to get away from it all. Away from the alcoholism that derails Jack’s writing career. Away from the violent outbursts that mar Jack’s past. But Jack’s young son Danny knows better. He possesses a psychic gift called the shining — a gift...

The episode of The Black Sheep covering DeepStar Six was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Sean S. Cunningham will always be primarily remembered for directing the original Friday the 13th, but he has taken the helm of some other movies that are worth checking out, like 1985’s The New Kids and the subject of the latest entry in our Black Sheep video series, DeepStar Six (get it Here).
Released in 1989 and often compared to its fellow ’89 release Leviathan (which has also gotten the Black Sheep treatment), DeepStar Six was scripted Geoff Miller and Lewis Abernathy – which is interesting because movies like Leviathan and DeepStar Six exist because James Cameron’s The Abyss was coming out the same year, and Abernathy and Cameron are pals. Abernathy even had an acting role in Titanic.

Peter Gonzales Falcon, the Texan who starred as a young Federico Fellini in the director’s semi-autobiographical Roma, has died, according to his friend Aurelio Montemayor. He was 75.
Gonzales Falcon got his start with a bit part in Viva Max (1969), a satirical film about a modern-day Mexican general (Peter Ustinov) who retakes the Alamo.
The actor went on to model for a year in London before he landed the role that would make his career.
In 2018, Gonzales Falcon related the story of auditioning for Fellini after being recommended by actor Eugene Walter, a friend of a friend:
I went to Cinecittà where there was a line about a block long with young men wanting to meet Fellini. I went around the line to the main door and buzzed. The door was opened by Liliana [Fellini’s longtime assistant] who looked like a little Edward G. Robinson and even had a cigar in her mouth.

Peter Gonzales Falcon, the actor from Texas who portrayed a young Federico Fellini in Roma, the famed Italian director’s 1972 autobiographical film, has died. He was 74.
Gonzales Falcon was found dead at his home Tuesday in La Pryor, Texas, by authorities called there for a safety check, his friend Aurelio Montemayor told The Hollywood Reporter.
After dropping out of college after being cast in Viva Max (1969), a farcical present-day comedy about retaking the Alamo, Gonzales Falcon was hired by Fellini himself for Roma, which featured cameos from Anna Magnani, Marcello Mastroianni and Gore Vidal.
Segments of the film show Gonzales Falcon as Fellini during the 1930s and ’40s after the future filmmaker arrives in Rome to pursue a career as a journalist and wanders the city to experience what it has to offer. He worked on the documentary-style feature for 41 weeks, he told author Tom Lisanti during an expansive 2018 interview.

The Chiller Channel was a huge gateway for me. I had been exposed to whatever my mom watched previous to that, or whatever weird shit I found at 2Am… it’s more than you think. Chiller brought me the things I missed out on when they originally aired. One of those is Night Visions.
Night Visions originally aired in 2001, though it was meant to air the year prior, but one of our previous series, Freakylinks took its place. I’m not upset about this– Freakylinks was the series we deserved. Then on July 6th, 2001, brooding punk poet and man of many black tees, Henry Rollins entered our homes through the small screen. He’d probably give me shit for using the word brooding.

The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.
“Beef” tied with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for the most nominations among all non-regular series programs with 13. It’s presently in the lead among Gold Derby voters in the limited series race with 16/5 combined odds. Its star Ali Wong is also in first place among limited lead actresses,...

To state it outright, Shane Black's 2013 film "Iron Man 3" is one of the best films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a film not about overpowering villains or the strength of forward-assault military tactics, but about wit and character. Tony Stark spent a great deal of the film outside of his armor, mentally damaged by the trauma of fighting aliens during "The Avengers" (2012), requiring him to use his brains to solve a new crisis. He also uses his Iron Man suit to stage a daring mid-air rescue in a display of heroism frustratingly lacking from a series about superheroes.
Additionally, the film added a clever twist to its villain, a terrorist calling himself The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). While initially presented as an aggressive, violent criminal, it was eventually revealed that the Mandarin was in fact a dumb, drug-addled actor, hired by Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) to merely pose as a villain.

"RoboCop" was a hot favorite on the school playground when I was a kid. Stories of brutal cop killings and boardroom bloodbaths joined the head-popping scene from "Scanners" and the gruesome exploits of Freddy Krueger as the kind of viewing choice that separated the cool kids from the rest of us. Or at least, separated those who had access to their parents' video rental card from those who didn't.
I caught up with it again several years ago after a gap of about two decades, going in expecting a blast of pure '80s nostalgia. I got a blast alright, but there was nothing sentimental about it. Seeing it again as an adult made me realize that "RoboCop" isn't just a fun movie, it's a great one. Paul Verhoeven directs the hell out of it and there is plenty of substance and style to go with the over-the-top action.

Still Photography on the set of “Ticket To Paradise” From the time he was born, it seemed like George Clooney was destined for a job in the public eye. After all, it ran in his family: his father was a local television mainstay in Cincinnati and several other markets, his aunt was singer and actress Rosemary Clooney, his uncle was actor José Ferrer, and his cousin was veteran character actor the late Miguel Ferrer. So, young George was exposed to show business at an early age, including several television appearances with his father. That being the case, George Clooney says that nobody was surprised when he wound up pursuing a show business career himself. It’s hard to believe that lost nerd media is still a thing in 2022. Sure, in decades past, you would have to go to a comic con to buy an unreliable DVD-r with the Roger Corman-produced Fantastic Four movie or that unaired Justice League of America tv movie with Star Trek: Picard‘s Michelle Hurd as Fire and Miguel Ferrer as villain the Weather Man. But thanks to the wonders of the internet, you can find those films with just a few keystrokes. But if Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are to be believed, their suddenly canceled movie will never be seen by audiences.
Speaking on the YouTube channel Skrpt, the directors — who also helmed Bad Boys for Life and two episodes of Ms. Marvel — revealed that they don’t even have copies of their film. After learning about the halt and production, El Arbi contacted Fallah and told him,...

On July 17, 1987, director Paul Verhoeven’s Robocop hit theaters. The Orion Pictures sci-fi actioner went on to gross 53 million that summer and launched a franchise. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
It’s 1991 and Detroit needs a new sheriff. Even a Magnum-shooting muscleman won’t do. Motown’s taken its murder capital reputation seriously, and things are now way out of control. Normal cops can’t handle it. The new gun brought to town is large, metal, computerized and impregnable … It’s part man/part machine and Robocop can wipe out all in its path.
Similarly, this well-crafted, science-fiction actioner should wipe up massive body counts at the box office for Orion. While those whose tastes don’t include the spectacle of large machines noisily blasting at each other are not likely to be enticed by Robocop, this shocked look at...

The opening act of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is easily misread as cynical. Its first shot, a metal bat shattering a television screen, violently severs the world of Twin Peaks from the medium that originally housed it—one that, by the end of an initial 30-episode run, had curbed the vision of creators David Lynch and Mark Frost considerably. And the half-hour of material that follows is, pointedly, everything Twin Peaks isn’t. We’re in the company of two unfamiliar FBI agents, Chester Desmond (Chris Isaak) and Sam Stanley (Kiefer Sutherland), investigating the murder of an unfamiliar girl, Teresa Banks (Pamela Gidley), in an unfamiliar town, Deer Meadow. The denizens of Deer Meadow are ornery and dismissive. Desmond and Stanley, though not lacking charm, are a far cry from the buoyantly charismatic Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), whose presence throughout is minimal.

Arrow Video bumps yet another of its top special edition titles up to 4K Ultra HD, just for home theater enthusiasts after the best and brightest of big screen experiences. The movie looks better than ever, and although the unrated version still packs too much gore overkill for average viewers, we respect the Horror-Comic vibe it was meant to conjure. As sci-fi satire Robo still carries a big stick: Edward Neumeier’s anti-corporate, anti-privatization message comes through loud, clear, and profane.

"RoboCop" is considered a classic of '80s action cinema due to its high-concept story, the surprising emotional depths of said story, and the gobs of ultraviolence that are liberally sprinkled throughout that story. Peter Weller's Alex Murphy is literally shot to pieces before being rebuilt as a cyborg, Bob Morton (Miguel Ferrer) has his kneecaps blown out by Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith), and one of Boddicker's henchman has a run-in with a vat of toxic waste. To think this film has spawned ad campaigns for fried chicken and even has not one, but two animated spinoffs!

With her NCIS: Los Angeles run having come to an end, Renée Felice Smith is ready for her next chapter — somewhat literally, being an author as well as an actress.
In the CBS drama’s Season 12 finale, Smith’s Nell Jones made the decision to not officially sign on as the “new Hetty”/Operations Manager, but instead join partner Eric Beale on an adventure to Tokyo, to head up his tech venture. But before driving off into the sunset, Nell briefly reunited with long-mia Hetty herself, in costar Linda Hunt’s first on-set appearance of the season.

One of the strongest things about The Stand has always been about the characters. Now we are in the second half of this new adaption of the book it is fair to say that the characters are also the biggest problem the show has. Now we make it to New Vegas does this change?
With spies in New Vegas trying to find out more about Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard), one of them, Dayna (Natalie Martinez) may have been a little too eager to see the Dark Man. Back in Boulder, Stu (Stu Redman) and Frannie (Odessa Young) invite Harold (Owen Teague) over for dinner.
I’ve waited for quite a few episodes for the show to finally hit New Vegas in the hope that things liven up a bit in The Stand. What...

It is fair to say that the new version of The Stand still has the shadow of the original mini-series to escape from. This week we get introduced to some of the other characters fans will have been waiting for, but as we get used to the new structure, how well does it stand up that expectations?
In this episode we are introduced to the flashbacks of Larry Underwood (Jovan Adepo) and Lloyd Henried (Nat Wolff). Along with these characters we are also introduced to the more mysterious Nadine Cross (Amber Heard) who fans of The Stand will know, and understand why she is so mysterious.
What I noticed about this episode of The Stand was the slowdown is starting to set in. The first episode had a lot of things to introduce to the story,...

This big, expensive and well-produced action-suspense Sci-fi epic mostly delivers on its promise to be Aliens at the bottom of the sea. At heart it’s a 1950s pulse-pounder with a bigger monster, a zillion times the budget and a script that does everything but make us care. We appreciate the likable characters but it’s too easy to predict who will ‘get it’ next. The realism factor is not bad at all, although the undersea explorer video training sessions should have given ‘how not to crack up under stress’ more emphasis. And can’t anybody properly mind those pesky nuclear bombs?

While it may not be Friday, there is still plenty to celebrate this Tuesday the 13th, as we prepare to head back to Camp Crystal Lake with Scream Factory’s impressive Friday the 13th Collection, which brings together all the films from the original franchise, as well as the remake and Freddy vs. Jason as well. Scream Factory also put together a Blu-ray release of one of the most seminal films from my childhood this week—Terror in the Aisles—and they even are giving Motel Hell the Steelbook treatment on Tuesday as well.
Kino Lorber is also keeping busy this week with their special edition Blu for DeepStar Six as well as a SteelBook for Rawhead Rex, and for those of you who dig on The Exorcist sequels, both Dominion and Exorcist: The Beginning come home on Blu-ray this Tuesday, courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Hollywood’s latest obsession with the works of prolific author and horror icon Stephen King shows no signs of slowing down, and just like the last time he found his novels and short stories being adapted for the big and small screens on a regular basis, the most recent batch have also been marked with inconsistency.
With so many filmmakers of vastly different styles tackling the material with such wildly fluctuating results, it almost seems hard to believe that stone-cold classics like The Shining and The Shawshank Redemption are based on books written by the same mind behind infamous duds like Dreamcatcher and The Dark Tower.
There are currently eleven movies and nine TV shows in various stages of development based on the 72 year-old’s literary output, and while we might be veering dangerously close to saturation point, it appears that the industry’s latest Stephen King renaissance is set...

Could it be there are personnel changes in the wind at the Osp?
Hints about such were none too subtly dropped on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 11 Episode 17.
For the last three seasons, the assumption was that Linda Hunt would get done and Hetty would retire.
But maybe that's just a red herring. Maybe Hetty will remain as a recurring character, occasionally seen but constantly referenced, a ghost in the machine.
Instead, the changes may be coming further down in the lineup.
NCIS: Los Angeles has been the most stable castwise of the three long-running NCIS franchises.
Dom, and later Nate, left early on, while the bugs were still getting worked out, although Nate could certainly be considered a recurring character at this point.
Granger would likely still be there, recurring like Hetty, if cancer hadn't claimed Miguel Ferrer in 2017.
So, for a series likely to be going into its 12th season,...

Extra-special extras adorn this stunning reissue of a modern sci-fi action classic. Paul Verhoeven’s sledgehammer of graphic-novel brutality and wicked political satire (courtesy of a Michael Miner-Ed Neumeier screenplay that should have won awards) hasn’t diminished one iota. We still feel like we’re being subjected to a shockingly ultra-violent entertainment from the future. Both versions are present, along with enough interview extras to make one feel personally involved in the production. Although later entries in the Robo franchise were marketed to children (we have the toys to prove it) this hard-action show expresses an adult-oriented rage against Reagan’s America. The filmmakers could have earned a lot more money making Robo un-political and kid-safe but instead chose to stay true to their radical concept.

Two of my favorite people will once again be teaming up, Stephen King will be making a rare appearance on writer/director Mick Garris’s podcast Post Mortem. It seems like everybody has a podcast nowadays. Even I have a podcast called Coffee and Conspiracy. Podcasting can be a positive thing for many reasons. One of those reasons being that if you are a fan of something, you can get an insight into the creative mind of the creator.
I first saw the name Mick Garris in a book of short stories called Splatter Punks. Garris’s short story “ A Life in the Cinema”, was one of my favorites. Garris went onto creating, the Maters of Horror, an anthology series bringing all your favorite horror writers and directors together to deliver one- hour stories to terrify your soul. Stephen King’s work has had a bit of a renaissance in the streaming era. Now one of his signature works is getting a brand new version.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour on Wednesday, CBS All Access Executive Vice President of Original Content Julie McNamara announced that the service would be ushering in a new adaptation of King’s novel “The Stand,” currently planned for a 2020 release. The novel, first published in 1978, takes place in the aftermath of a global epidemic brought on by a weaponized flu virus.
“With over 400 million books sold around the world, Stephen King is one of our greatest living authors and ‘The Stand’ is widely seen as the jewel in the crown of his work. This epic saga is perfectly suited to a premium streaming execution,” McNamara said.

A near-perfect episode of Young Justice is marred only by the real world.
This Young Justice review contains spoilers.
Young Justice: Outsiders Episode 7
Probably the biggest hurdle to the success of Young Justice: Outsiders after six years away was getting everything back together again after everyone went their separate ways, and some things have changed irrevocably. "Evolution" was a terrific episode, one of the finest Vandal Savage stories in any medium, but as good as David Kaye is in this episode voicing him, it's still a reminder that a ton of time has passed since the show was last on the air and some of their voice cast couldn't come back.
The two missing voice actors this season are Tim Curry as G. Gordon Godfrey and Miguel Ferrer as Savage, and they've both been missed so far this season. Curry's Godfrey was perfect as the frothing, barely-holding-it-together maniac talk radio host.

Ming-Na Wen, the actress who voiced the title character in Disney’s animated classic “Mulan,” rang in the New Year by calling out Netflix on social media for omitting her name from the credits list featured on the streaming giant’s “Mulan” page. Neither of the movie’s Asian-American lead voice actors (Ming-Na Wen and Bd Wong) were included on Netflix’s “Mulan” homepage. Wen called her and Wong’s omission screwed up and encouraged “Mulan” fans to tweet at Netflix about the “major oversight.”
The Netflix credits bar on a film’s streaming homepage rarely features the entire cast, and in most cases it contains the names of only three or four cast members. Ming-Na Wen’s omission was first spotted by radio producer Dave Sanchez, who watched “Mulan” for the first time on New Year’s Eve and couldn’t believe the streaming giant made no mention of...

Editor’s note: This story originally ran on June 13 as Emmy nomination-round voting began. After David Lynch’s Twin Peaks bowed on ABC in April 1990, it became a cultural phenomenon, producing two Emmys and 18 nominations. All these years later, Lynch is back in the running with three nominations for Showtime’s follow-up series Twin Peaks: The Return.

This year even allowed more room than usual for the unexpected as several major players from last year – Veep, Master of None, Better Call Saul, House of Cards – took this awards season off. And to be sure, the Television Academy has undeniably improved in their taste as a voting body over the years. Still, they still had us scratching our heads a few times. Where the hell is Will and Grace?...

MGM is venturing down the Robocop route again, this time with District 9 and Chappie director Neill Blomkamp at the helm.
The film, which is titled Robocop Returns and acts as a sequel to the 1987 movie, is currently going through a rewrite by Justin Rhodes. The original script was written by Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner; the duo who wrote the original 1987 RoboCop. At this time, a plot line for the return is being kept under wraps.
The original Robocop was directed by Paul Verhoeven and starred Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Dan O’Herlihy, Kurtwood Smith, Miguel Ferrer, and Ronny Cox. Set in a crime-ridden Detroit, Michigan, in the near future, RoboCop centres on police officer Alex Murphy (Weller) who is murdered by a gang of criminals and subsequently revived by the megacorporation Omni Consumer Products (Ocp) as a superhuman cyborg law enforcer known as RoboCop.

Could Miguel Ferrer become a posthumous Emmy nominee for “Twin Peaks: The Return”? The veteran character actor died of throat cancer in January 2017 after he shot the Showtime revival, in which he reprised his role as FBI Agent Albert Rosenfield. The TV academy often rewards stars who have died with nominations for their final performances, so could Ferrer compete for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor? Despite a long list of TV credits including “The Stand” (1994), “Crossing Jordan” (2001-2007), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (2012-2017) and many more, he never earned an Emmy nomination during his lifetime.
Ferrer first appeared in the original “Twin Peaks” in a recurring role as an abrasive and sarcastic FBI forensics specialist assisting Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) in his murder investigation in the title town. And he also appeared in the 1992 prequel film “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.” The 18-episode limited run in 2017 found him...

It may not be the Oscars, but if tonight’s results of the 44th Annual Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films is any indication of influence on that other Academy (which it usually isn’t) then get prepared for a Black Panther wave at the Dolby Theatre next February. After virtually sweeping last week’s MTV Movie Awards, Panther took five Saturns including Best Comic-to-Film Motion Picture and Best Director for Ryan Coogler. However the Panther himself lost to Luke Skywalker in the Best Actor contest where Mark Hamill took honors for Star Wars: The Last Jedi over favored Chadwick Boseman. Rian Johnson also picked up a Saturn for his Last Jedi screenplay. In fact, due to a diversity of categories , the awards were spread around with other Picture honors going to Blade Runner 2049 as Best Science Fiction Film, The Shape Of Water for Fantasy Film, Get...
