Each month before the Smackdown, Nick Taylor considers alternates to Oscar's ballot...
Remember way back when this Smackdown season started with 1981, and I mentioned Karen Allen as someone who somehow missed out on a well-deserved Supporting Actress nomination despite how few films Oscar bothered to recognize that year? Her barnstorming performance in Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of that adventure classic's secret weapons, building on the potential in Marion Ravenwood and delivering a tangible, electrifying character even when the script lets her down. In truth, I sometimes think of Allen alongside contemporaneous stars like Jessica Harper and Brooke Adams: singular, charismatic screen presences you could never mix up for one another despite their similar appearances, all of whom starred in some of the best, most idiosyncratic films of the ‘70s and ‘80s.
I’d also wager that Harper and Adams’ personas would suggest themselves for the role of the shy,...

Hollywood’s latest obsession with the works of prolific author and horror icon Stephen King shows no signs of slowing down, and just like the last time he found his novels and short stories being adapted for the big and small screens on a regular basis, the most recent batch have also been marked with inconsistency.
With so many filmmakers of vastly different styles tackling the material with such wildly fluctuating results, it almost seems hard to believe that stone-cold classics like The Shining and The Shawshank Redemption are based on books written by the same mind behind infamous duds like Dreamcatcher and The Dark Tower.
There are currently eleven movies and nine TV shows in various stages of development based on the 72 year-old’s literary output, and while we might be veering dangerously close to saturation point, it appears that the industry’s latest Stephen King renaissance is set...

The Simpsons Season 31 Episode 2
The Simpsons, season 31, episode 2, "Go Big or Go Homer," is a cautionary tale told recklessly. It opens with the worst thing that ever happened at a nuclear power plant (number six is when all those horses went bald) and closes with the most criminal enterprise to hit Springfield on wheels. But at the center is a sad tale of a vulnerable cog in an oil-deprived machine.
Mr. Burns burns Homer's buns because he signs a birthday card for Lenny. Without coughing up anything to pay for the card or the party, which includes the closeup magic of AbracaDebra, Burns pulls a Houdini to purloin all the glory from the best birthday party Lenny's ever gotten. Homer's slow burn is foreshadowing to his future shadow.

Late in the new Netflix miniseries Unbelievable, an attorney laments one of the many unfortunate ways that rape is treated differently by law enforcement than other significant crimes. “Nobody ever accuses a robbery victim of lying,” he notes. “But when it comes to sexual assault?”
Marie (Booksmart‘s Kaitlyn Dever) is accused of lying — repeatedly. The story opens with police arriving at the apartment building for at-risk youth that she moved into after leaving the foster care system. “I was raped,” Marie says plainly. As she relates the tale to...

TV didn’t always upend the horror formula; but when they would add a couple of different colors to the mix, the result was usually at least interesting. Such is the case with Deadly Messages (1985), which throws the whole palette at the screen for a very messy, but entertaining distraction.
Originally broadcast February 21st as part of The ABC Thursday Night Movie, the telefilm could not have picked a worse night to premiere: in addition to CBS’ solid lineup of Magnum, P.I. and Simon & Simon, NBC had the biggest block on the air – The Cosby Show/Family Ties/Cheers/Night Court. Oh well. For the six other people not watching that, they were left with a goofy and breezy murder mystery come Ouija board spookfest.
Let’s pull apart our sun kissed faux TV Guide and see what the spirits have to say:

The first season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is one of the streaming era’s most perfect stretches of television — the kind of once-in-a-generation Hale-Bopp of a comedy that can only happen when a singular talent is given a blank check to make her dream project a reality, and then the stars align so that it somehow turns out just right. And so — fresh off Emmy and Golden Globe wins for Best Series — creator Amy Sherman-Palladino knew exactly what she had to do to keep the magic alive for Season 2: Change everything.
Sitting next to her husband and creative partner Daniel Palladino in a quiet Manhattan hotel suite that felt worlds removed from the manic zeal of their work, Sherman-Palladino suggested that you might have to kill a golden goose if you want to make something more valuable out of its feathers. “The thing that interests us the most,...

Welcome to the West, long after the frontier has closed. Allison Anders’ marvelous drama of a three-girl family is a big step for indie cinema, a highly entertaining examination of women’s aspirations and frustrations out on the non-glamorous working class fringe. Writer-director Anders wastes no time with a terrific cast — Brooke Adams, Ione Skye and Fairuza Balk’s family lacks a father, and ‘men who walk’ becomes the central issue in their lives. Filmed in a gloriously believable New Mexico desert.

The longer Scream Factory has been in business, the more high profile and “classic” titles they have released, the more they have begun to dig a little deeper for the kinds of catalogue titles and semi-obscurities for which devoted horror fans have been clamoring for years. New licensing deals have made new titles possible, including three new releases that have been among the most highly requested movies in Scream Factory’s history. As if there was any doubt, the fact that these three films now have special edition Blu-rays are proof positive that we are living in a golden age of home video.

Early on in “Snapshots,” an elderly matriarch announces to her visiting daughter and granddaughter that two topics of conversation are forbidden for the weekend: “what-ifs and politics.” It’s as sure a sign as any that those themes — identity politics in particular, with the red-blue kind more implied — will proceed to dominate Melanie Mayron’s earnest, gentle-hearted film, an across-the-generations ode to following your heart and living your truth. If that sounds corny, this reflection on an illicit affair between two young married women, and the familial reverberations it has decades later, isn’t shy of stating its case in bluntly homespun terms: One rather wishes Jan Miller Corran and Katherine Cortez’s evidently heartfelt script placed a little more trust in its actors (and audience) to connect the emotional dots.
As it is, “Snapshots” wallows a little too readily in cliché to be quite as stirring as its story...

In this edition of Canon Of Film, we look back at ‘Days of Heaven‘, writer/director Terrence Malick‘s sophomore masterpiece. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
Days Of Heaven (1979)
Director/Screenplay: Terrence Malick
It’s not just that Terrence Malick only works when he’s inspired. He also only works when he gets the money, and even then, if he can’t do exactly what he wants to do–instead of compromising–he abandons the project entirely, deciding it better to get only what he wants than to get a compromised version, and often what he wants is some of the most amazingly difficult and nearly impossible-to-shoot scenes. In Days of Heaven, arguably his best film, all the scenes outdoors and in the daytime were shot during the “magic hour” (Film Dictionary: Magic Hour- The time during the day, about an hour...

How Stephen King may have helped David Cronenberg make a masterpiece with The Fly.
The Fly arguably remains David Cronenberg’s masterpiece, over 30 years after its release. Loosely based on a 1957 short story by French writer George Langelaan, the movie transcends the story’s pulpy origins and the well-known images of a man with a fly’s head (and vice versa) from the 1958 film version starring Vincent Price to become a somber meditation on disease and aging and a tragic love story, not to mention one of the most effective horror/sci-fi films of its time. It also marked a summation and endpoint to the first phase of Cronenberg’s career, while investing his work with a new emotional maturity and thematic resonance.
Producer Kip Ohman first had the idea of remaking The Fly in the early 1980s, recruiting screenwriter Charles Edward Pogue to write the script.
