Last year, after more than thirty years, we finally got a new entry in the Gremlins franchise – and this was an unexpected addition, coming in the form of the animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, which serves as a prequel to the 1984 classic Gremlins (watch it Here). The show was released through the Max streaming service, and now Max has announced that a second season, now titled Gremlins: The Wild Batch, is coming this fall!

If you’re going to share a whole life story, you’d better be a marvelous storyteller. That’s the challenge facing the playwrights—and the actors—in a pair of plays putting down roots this week, a Broadway revival of Samm-Art Williams’s Home and Atlantic Theater Company’s world premiere of Shayan Lotfi’s What Became of Us. Each play takes an interest in poeticizing, through narration, the cradle-to-geriatric journey of so-called ordinary American lives.

With “Dancing with the Stars” set to come back for a 33rd season this fall, there’s a long list of celebrities who deserve to compete. Three of my past suggestions actually did end up cast on the show: Frankie Muniz (who placed third in season 25), Kel Mitchell (who placed second on season 28), and Jamie Lynn Spears (who was the second to be eliminated last season). Below is a list of male celebs I think the show should consider to vie for the next Mirror Ball Trophy. Do you agree with my picks? Check them out below, then vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know which you’d most like to see on “DWTS.” And let us know in the comments what other stars you would like to see when the show comes back in September.

Before The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Six Feet Under, The Wire, or any of the other popular HBO shows, there was Oz. The one-hour drama chronicled the lives of the staff and inmates at the Oswald State Correctional Facility, a maximum security penitentiary home to the most violent offenders in the state. It’s been over twenty years since the series concluded, but creator Tom Fontana is back with an Oz short film starring Lee Tergesen as Tobias Beecher and Dean Winters as Ryan O’Reily.
Titled Zo, the short film actually premiered at the Atx Festival in 2021, but few people were able to see it. Thankfully, Zo will premiere on YouTube on May 1st, giving fans around the world the chance to finally see it. According to Kirk Acevado, who starred in Oz as Miguel Alvarez, it could even lead to a sequel series if the short film gets enough buzz.

Universal Pictures will release an all new “Jurassic World” event film on July 2, 2025, the studio announced on Monday.
David Koepp will write the screenplay, which is said to launch a new storyline. “The Fall Guy” director David Leitch is in very early talks to direct the next installment of the franchise.
While plot details are scarce, insiders say that the film will start a new storyline separate from the trilogy of “Jurassic World” films that starred Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard and saw the eventual inclusion of “Jurassic Park” stars Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and B.D. Wong.
The Jurassic film franchise has proven remarkably resilient at the box office, so it is unsurprising that Universal wants to continue the series. Though box office returns have declined with each new “Jurassic World” installment, all three movies – 2015’s “Jurassic World,” 2018’s “Fallen Kingdom,” and 2022’s “Dominion” – managed to surpass $1 billion globally.

Law & Order: Svu was a bit of new territory for hip-hop artist Ice-t. When he first met the cast, he noticeably kept a bit of distance. But little did the rapper know he’d be working with his Law & Order for 25 seasons now.

Ice-t couldn’t have known Law & Order was going to last as long as it has when he was first cast. The actor has always shared that he was originally only supposed to be on the show for four episodes.
“Here it is, we’re starting the 22nd season. I can’t really explain it, man,” Ice-t said not too long ago on Straight Up Steve Austin.
But Ice-t doesn’t mind the show’s longevity.

For many playwrights, film and television work has historically served as a supplement to their income from the theater world. But in recent years, writers say, studios have begun to poke holes in that safety net, leaving some stage scribes as frustrated and angry as their screenwriting colleagues.

The 16th century literary classic Journey to the West is the mother of all Chinese fantasy. The mythological saga has spawned countless adaptations in various media across Asia and beyond, from the cult late ‘70s Japanese TV series to Peking Opera, videogames, graphic novels and a stage spectacle with a score by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and design elements by Gorillaz illustrator Jamie Hewlett.
Prominent among the innumerable film versions is the 2013 blockbuster Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, directed by Stephen Chow. A similar livewire action-comedy energy infuses Netflix’s The Monkey King, a children’s animated feature based on the sprawling novel’s most popular strand, on which Chow serves as executive producer.

The Writers Guild of America strike has been underway since May, but this July, SAG-AFTRA joined the chorus of Hollywood dissenters fed up with outmoded contracts with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Hollywood is now officially on strike, with production on nearly all AMPTP-associated film and television projects featuring SAG-AFTRA talent at a standstill — and actors are now taking to the picket lines in unity to voice their concerns over residuals, the threat of artificial intelligence, and challenging working conditions from meal breaks to long hours.
Now that SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP failed to achieve a deal on a new minimum bargaining agreement after SAG-AFTRA contracts expired July 12 — even after an initial extension — actors are on full work-stoppage orders. That means no participation in productions or promoting their SAG-AFTRA-certified work, past or present, and that includes press tours and red carpets and festival appearances. (More on...

It’s Day 12 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 85 of the WGA strike.
With enough famous actors to populate an awards show all gathered on one stage, the labor union representing them in an “existential battle” against film and television studios held a star-studded strike rally in the middle of New York’s Times Square on Tuesday morning.
An audience of several hundred people including card-waving members of SAG-AFTRA squeezed into a barricaded pedestrian plaza on a humid day when at least one spectator required medical attention. At an event dubbed “Rock the City for a Fair Contract,” they heard almost two hours worth of speeches from union representatives and from high-profile acting peers including Bryan Cranston, Christine Baranski, Wendell Pierce, Christian Slater, Stephen Lang, Michelle Hurd, Jill Hennessy and Steve Buscemi.

Bryan Cranston had a message for Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger during a SAG-AFTRA protest rally held in Times Square on Tuesday: Corporate greed cannot take away an actor’s dignity and right to work.
Per Variety, the “Breaking Bad” actor gave an impassioned speech during a “Rock the City for a Fair Contract” rally in New York City, speaking out on conditions of the strike but also pointedly delivering words for Iger. The CEO, whose Disney contract was extended through 2026 literally the day before the SAG-AFTRA strike began, called actors’ and writers’ demands out of the ongoing strikes “not realistic” and “very disturbing.”

Bryan Cranston delivered a fiery speech at a SAG-AFTRA strike rally in Times Square on Tuesday, which included a message directed at Disney head Bob Iger.
“We’ve got a message for Mr. Iger,” Cranston said from the stage of the “Rock the City for a Fair Contract” rally. “I know, sir, that you look [at] things through a different lens. We don’t expect you to understand who we are. But we ask you to hear us, and beyond that to listen to us when we tell you we will not be having our jobs taken away and given to robots. We will not have you take away our right to work and earn a decent living. And lastly, and most importantly, we will not allow you to take away our dignity! "Maybe defeating everyone isn't the answer. Maybe... it's helping other people." Netflix has revealed the trailer for The Monkey King animated movie, directed by animation filmmaker Anthony Stacchi, with animation by ReelFX. Inspired by an epic Chinese tale, The Monkey King is an action-packed family comedy that follows a charismatic Monkey (voiced by Jimmy O. Yang) and his magical fighting Stick on an epic quest for victory fighting over 100 demons, an eccentric Dragon King, and Monkey’s greatest foe of all —his own ego! This will be streaming on Netflix worldwide starting in August. Sounds like fun! The voice cast includes Jimmy O. Yang with Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Nan Li, Bowen Yang, Jo Koy, Ron Yuan, Hoon Lee, Bd Wong, Andrew Kishino, Sophie Wu and many others. This reminds me of DreamWorks' Kung Fu Panda in the look and feel. I can appreciate how they handle the plot about his ego,...

65 is a movie about aliens crash landing on Earth during the age of the dinosaurs. Except that the aliens look an awful lot like they come from Earth, and the dinosaurs… don’t.
The dinosaurs presented in writer-directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ film might have some recognizable body parts, and some may even bear a passing resemblance to a few of the bigger names from the My First Dinosaur book you had as a kid, but for the most part, the giant killer reptiles we see in that movie are monsters, nothing more, and nothing less. At one point there is a baby dinosaur that looks like a cross between a T-Rex and an Ankylosaurus, a species so far unknown outside of one episode of the Lego Jurassic World animated series. Awkwafina is… searching for her first Emmy nomination. The multi-hyphenate star has seen her status as a performer and creative rise rapidly within the last few years but she has yet to receive the recognition a comedian of her talents might well deserve from the Emmys.
With “Awkwafina is Nora From Queens,” however, that could change. Created by Awkwafina and “Family Guy” and “American Dad” writer/producer Teresa Hsiao, this Comedy Central hit is a vehicle for Awkwafina’s star power. It follows Awkwafina as Nora, a fictionalized version of herself, who is a 20-year-old-something woman living in Queens, New York who longs for something better than she currently has. She finds herself in various situations, ranging from the aggravating to the bizarre, and has to deal with her family, too, led by her dad (Bd Wong) and grandma (Lori Tan Chinn). Fans of Joe Dante’s “Gremlins” (1984) wanting to know how mysterious shop owner Mr. Wing (Keye Luke) first met Gizmo (Howie Mandel) and the rest of the mogwai creatures finally get an answer in the new animated prequel “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” (now streaming on Max). In this new origin story from showrunner Tze Chun (“I’m a Virgo”) and executive producer Brendan Hay (“Robot Chicken”), 10-year-old Sam Wing (Izaac Wang) and young Gizmo (Aj LoCascio) attempt to transport the mogwai from 1920 Shanghai to their ancestral home in the Valley of Jade.
The pair are accompanied by teenage street thief Ellie (Gabrielle Nevaeh) and pursued by sorcerer/industrialist Riley Greene (Matthew Rhys), who knows how destructive the mogwai can be if exposed to water or fed after midnight and wants them for his own army of assassins.

In 1984 a promising director named Joe Dante unleashed Gremlins. It was a horror-comedy that played like a polished-up version of something he might have worked on for his mentor, B-movie king Roger Corman, who shepherded Dante’s first solo feature, Piranha, in 1978. Dante already had The Howling to his name, but this was bigger. Goopy and bloody, scary and funny and endearing, Gremlins was a massive hit that spawned an even bloodier sequel. Corman-esque in spirit, with a dollop of Eighties niceness courtesy of young screenwriter Chris Columbus, its success...

Joe Dante’s Gremlins came out on the eve of my seventh birthday, and I was instantly smitten. I saw the movie multiple times, read various adaptations and wore out the grooves on the series of tie-in records that were distributed through Hardee’s.
Gizmo, the seemingly innocent mogwai who, through modern humanity’s inability to follow three very basic rules, helped unleash a chaotic surge of nefarious gremlins, has been a constant companion over four decades, serving as my frequent social media avatar.
If the allure of Gremlins to Young Daniel was something primal — the lizard-brain appeal of Gizmo’s cuteness and the gremlins’ Chuck Jones-inspired mayhem — the subsequent appeal in countless rewatches has been different. As directed by Dante, like the cinematic spawn of Frank Capra and Roger Corman, Gremlins is simultaneously elemental and malleable. Mogwai are manifestations of repressed ego, gremlins the embodiment of untethered id.

Plot: Takes viewers back to 1920s Shanghai where the Wing family first meets the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 Gremlins film) accepts the dangerous task to take Gizmo home and embarks on a journey through the Chinese countryside. Sam and Gizmo are joined by a teenage street thief named Elle, and together, they encounter—and sometimes battle—colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. Along their quest, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist named Riley Greene and his growing army of evil Gremlins.

Almost forty years ago, Joe Dante introduced the eternally adorable Gizmo, a strange furry mogwai, in Gremlins. The Mogwai comes with strict rules that, when broken, invite terror in the form of monstrous green offspring, unleashing gateway Amblin horror with a dark edge. Its animated prequel series, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, could’ve easily coasted on an origin story for Gizmo that used the 1984 film as a blueprint. Instead, showrunner Tze Chun takes viewers on an epic journey that entrenches the Mogwai within a larger world rich with culturally specific gods, myths, and monsters, all while capturing the same horror-comedy tone of Dante’s original film.
Secrets of the Mogwai opens with a disarming vision of a peaceful mogwai village in the 1920s, nestled deep within an emerald forest. An unpredictable force of nature manages to wrestle Gizmo (Aj LoCascio) away from his family and home, taking him all the way to Shanghai.
