You don't have to be a connoisseur of film and television history to keep up with the fascinating story of Firefly, which happened in 2003. Then Fox ordered a sci-fi adventure series from Joss Whedon in the spirit of Star Wars, Star Trek or Babylon 5.
The future director of The Avengers filmed a space opera combining science fiction and western, but for a number of reasons, not only did the network refuse to continue the popular show, but also wasn't too eager to show the finished 14 episodes.
The indignation of fans knew no bounds, but all the viewers and creators of Firefly managed to achieve was the shooting of the feature film Serenity, a cult in narrow circles, but not very successful at the box office space action movie.
Twenty years after the movie's release, talk of canceling Firefly still rages, especially since the show's actors are still closely associated with the show's characters.

King of the Ants
While Stuart Gordon cemented himself as a master of horror with early works like Re-Animator and From Beyond, his later output is also worthy of exploration. 2003’s King of the Ants kicked off a trio of intense thrillers (alongside Edmond and Stuck) that would end up being Gordon’s final features. It was also one of the first productions from The Asylum, who would go on to create Sharknado, Z Nation, and Black Summer.

Stranger Things’ rabid internet fandom leads to some fascinating places. People connect different parts of the series in novel ways, often leading to intense discourse about storylines and characters that some choose to forget. But one Stranger Things character from season 1 has had an uncommon staying power in the fandom. A quick look at the show’s Reddit board or trending hashtags on social media will lead to the more-than-periodic mention of Nancy Wheeler’s (Natalia Dyer) first-season best friend, Barbara “Barb” Holland (Shannon Purser).

If Warner Bros.’ newly announced The Lord of the Rings movie idea The Hunt for Gollum sounded a bit like fan fiction, that’s because it already is.
There’s a 2009 fan-made film titled The Hunt for Gollum that you can watch below. The film, directed by Chris Bouchard, is rather ambitious. The Hunt for Gollum spans 39 minutes and has received plenty of praise from fans upon its release.
Following WB’s announcement, the film was taken offline for many hours and YouTube put up a notice saying Warner Bros. had filed a copyright claim against the fan movie and blocked it. Lotr fans reacted quite negatively to the takedown online and, early Friday, the film was restored to YouTube.
A studio source says the takedown request was done in error.

‘Lord Of The Rings’ Cast Remembers Bernard Hill: “Don’t Think Anyone Spoke Tolkien’s Words As Great”
Lord of the Rings cast members Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan and Sean Astin, who played four Hobbits in the trilogy, are remembering Bernard Hill, who died suddenly Sunday morning at the age of 79.
Hill, who starred as King Théoden in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, was scheduled to appear at Liverpool Comic Con over the weekend, but pulled out of the event Friday.
“We love him. He was intrepid, he was funny, he was gruff, he was irascible, he was beautiful,” said Astin, who portrays Samwise Gamgee, onstage at the London event.
Billy Boyd, who plays Pippin, added: “We were watching the movies and I said to Dom, I don’t think anyone spoke Tolkien’s words as great as Bernard did.

Bernard Hill’s castmates from The Lord of the Rings gave several touching tributes to the actor, who died Sunday at the age of 79.
Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan and Sean Astin — who played the hobbits in Peter Jackson’s three blockbuster films — honored him at a Comic Con event in Liverpool.

“We just want to take a moment, before we walk off this stage, to honor him,” Astin told fans at the event. “He was supposed to be here today. We love him. He was intrepid, he was funny, he was gruff, he was irascible, he was beautiful.”

While Quentin Tarantino is considered to be the king of dialogue, his movies’ lines, with all their wholesomeness, clearly lack realism. However, there are movies in which onscreen conversations are really close to real ones, depicting the truth of life.
Here are 7 examples of such truthfully made movies, handpicked by Redditors.
1. Superbad (2007)
Jonah Hill and Michael Cera’s coming-of-age comedy doesn’t really mince words showing the truthful image of the American youth of different interests.
“It was exactly like how high schoolers spoke to each other in 2007,” fairly admits @dabisnit.
2. Uncut Gems (2019)
Directed by Benny and Josh Safdies, this crime thriller is very dialogue-heavy, with lots of multiple conversations happening simultaneously and fastly spoken utterances, which sounds really natural, being reminiscent of our daily communication in the big city.
3. Manchester By the Sea (2016)
“I love that there are no deep monologues. Every bit of dialogue feels real,” as voiced by Redditor @backinredd.

Peter Jackson’s iconic The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is probably one of the greatest trilogy ever made. Starring an ensemble cast of several actors and a thousand extras, Jackson had an ambitious project on his hands.
During the auditioning of the film, MCU star Jake Gyllenhaal also auditioned for the role of a Hobbit in the film. Not putting effort into his acting and not doing a British accent, Peter Jackson had some harsh words for Gyllenhaal back in the day!

We have discussed killers that received slasher movies, folklore turned cannibalism, and plenty of possession via person, home, or even object. What we haven’t done too much of is the good old-fashioned cult. While we took a deep dive into Jim Jones and the tragedy of Jonestown paired with the very well-done Sacrament, there are a ton of real-life cults and cult leaders that have been put to celluloid in an attempt to both cash in and tell a compelling story. I mean, I’m writing this right now on the couch while my wife watches a documentary about a cult on Netflix. True crime and religious cult stuff exist in popular forms like podcasts, shows, and of course movies too. Today we will look at two things that don’t get a lot of widespread attention. The 2007 horror movie Borderland (watch it Here) and what it is loosely...

Nathan Zellner and David Zellner’s Sasquatch Sunset is stomping into circa 850 theaters this weekend after debuting in 9 with a solid opening for a film many could find weird. A tribe of Sasquatch, possibly the last of their kind, live and love in the woods of northern California, where it was shot.
“We are taking Bigfoot to America. We have high hopes that the broader market will embrace the movie,” says Kyle Davies of distributor Bleecker Street, calling it “a very different” kind of movie and “a bit of an unknown.”
“It’s a wildcard.”
Marketing was mainly through social activations. “I wouldn’t call it traditional marketing. It doesn’t really fit in that box,” Davies adds. The Sasquatch standees in theaters are fun. And Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar is displaying a baby Sasquatch sitting in a glass case with umbilical cord and placenta.
This is “a polarizing film.

A grueling two-pedal route to the Grand Canyon just might provide the course-correction male juvenile offenders need in “Hard Miles.” With Matthew Modine as their teacher-coach, this fact-inspired tale covers familiar redemptive sports drama terrain. But it’s traveled with affectingly understated assurance by director R.J. Daniel Hanna (“Miss Virginia”) and a strong cast, making for a satisfying scenic ride that picked up several festival audience awards last year.
In a film loosely based on the life and work of his character’s offscreen namesake, Modine plays avid cyclist Greg Townsend, welding instructor at a medium-security correctional residential school in Colorado. That job environment is no picnic, given volatile students who can go from bantering to insults to fistfights in a flash. Plus he’s got his own demons to wrestle with — there are flashbacks to an abused childhood, and phone calls from an incarcerated brother keep urging Greg to...

Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings is considered one of the best film series to be ever made. And to commemorate their contributions to this iconic franchise, the main cast of the film series, including Sean Astin and Ian McKellen, decided to get matching tattoos of the Elvish word for nine.
The Lord of the Rings
However, one of the cast members, John Rhys-Davies, opted against joining his co-stars in this gesture and allowed his stunt double to take his place. The 79-year-old actor recently reflected on his decision not to get the matching tattoo, as he discussed the meaning and significance of tattoos.

"You just have to keep one step ahead of her." Saban Films has unveiled the trailer for a crime thriller titled Cash Out, from a filmmaker known as "Ives", debuting to watch at the end of April. Yet another of these dime a dozen, extremely derivative crime thrillers. This one is about a bank robbery gone wrong. When his crew's bank heist goes wrong, Mason gets trapped with his team inside the bank they’re trying to rob, and then it all evolves to a hostage situation involving Swat teams, the FBI and Interpol. How will they get out of this high stakes trap? John Travolta stars as Mason, with Kristin Davis, Quavo, Lukas Haas, Swen Temmel, Sean Astin, and Noel Gugliemi. Apparently there is already a sequel to Cash Out that's shot and ready to go - filmed in 2023 after this one filmed in 2022. Huh. This looks so forgettably...

Laurence Andries, a TV writer and producer who has worked on shows including Blue Bloods, How to Get Away with Murder and The Pacific, has been charged with six felony counts of sexual assault in Los Angeles.
The accuser, a John Doe, claims Andries drugged and assaulted him in June 2022 after they met for drinks. The writer-producer was arrested in August 2023 after charges were filed by the Los Angeles District Attorney. He remains free on a $150,000 bond and has not yet had a preliminary hearing, according to the Los Angeles Times.
News of the charges came to light after the John Doe, a military veteran, appeared this week in an ABC-7 interview, calling Andries his mentor in the industry.

It takes an incredible amount of intelligence to get a film as gleefully stupid as The Invisible Raptor to work. Yes, it’s Jurassic Park on one hundredth of the budget, with a giant empty space where the dinosaurs should be; hilarity is more than likely to ensue, running off just that pitch alone. But despite what much of the low-budget genre market would have you believe, one good joke does not make a film. Something which thankfully, director Mike Hermosa and writers Mike Capes and Johnny Wickham well and truly take to heart here, doubling down on absolutely everything around their bloodthirsty – and yes, totally invisible – mega beastie.
A chuckle-worthy, Sean Astin-starring cold open definitely sets the tone; outrageous gore, parody-level Spielberg gags, surprisingly decent production design. But it’s when Capes himself appears on the scene as dashing, fedora-sporting lead Dr. Grant Walker, that we start to...

A Broadway transfer may be in store for the stage production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
A casting notice calling for video submissions from Equity actors has been posted for the production, with a listed Broadway start in 2025. A theater has not yet been named. Stephen Daldry, who helmed the West End production of the show, is listed as director for the possible Broadway transfer, with Justin Martin as a co-director.
Neither Netflix nor Sonia Friedman Productions, the two producers on the show, immediately responded to a request for comment on plans for Broadway. A spokesperson for the production in London said more information about the “future life of the production” will be shared at a later time. The audition notice alone does not automatically mean it’s coming to Broadway, but the play is already proving popular in the West End.

“Oppenheimer” took home an impressive seven Academy Awards at Sunday’s Oscars, including the night’s top prize of Best Picture. The Universal movie also won Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy amongst a number of other awards. That is one below the total of eight wins we predicted for the film as “The Zone of Interest” beat the movie to win Best Sound. However, seven is still a huge tally and places “Oppenheimer” amongst the Best Picture winners to take home the highest amount of Oscars this century. Scroll down below for a complete list of every Best Picture winner this century ranked by total Oscar wins.

Filmmaker Edward Zwick, whose credits include About Last Night, Glory, Legends of the Fall, The Siege, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond, Defiance, Love & Other Drugs, Pawn Sacrifice, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (not to mention co-creating Thirtysomething), recently published a memoir called Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood (pick up a copy Here). This book contains some very interesting passages – like the one on Zwick’s Jack Reacher regrets, and another where he reveals how impressed Denzel Washington was by Matt Damon’s performance when they were on the set of Zwick’s 1996 film Courage Under Fire.
Zwick wrote, “As we finished Matt’s coverage, Denzel caught my eye and nodded approvingly. Later, he took me aside. ‘Who is that kid?’ he asked. I told him it was Matt’s first big role. ‘Damn,’ he said. ‘Better get my game on. He almost blew me off the screen.

Hey you guuyyysssss. When Josh Brolin was cast as older Walsh brother Brandon in 1988’s The Goonies, he had the role of being one of the more mature central cast members. But that doesn’t mean he had it all figured out. After all, it was his debut film, so he could afford as many pointers from the more seasoned people on set…including Steven Spielberg, who had to bring the up-and-comer down a few notches during filming.
Speaking with GQ, Josh Brolin remembered that Steven Spielberg gave him some sound advice during the making of The Goonies. Spielberg may not have been the director – those duties fell on Richard Donner – but he did have story credit and was frequently on hand. “It was a really innocent and a really fun time, and I thought that’s how movies were done and they weren’t. I remember coming up to Spielberg at some point,...

The Lord of the Rings co-stars Elijah Wood and Sean Astin reunited onstage Saturday at the 2024 SAG Awards. And that’s where Wood learned about a missing trophy.
The two, who played hobbits Frodo and Sam in Peter Jackson’s Lotr movie trilogy, were on stage to present the award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role. That went to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her role in The Holdovers.
Before that, Wood and Astin remarked on time’s passing after a clip was played of Astin accepting the Best Film Ensemble win at the 2004 SAG Awards for The Lord Of the Rings: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King while noting the absence of fellow stars Wood and Viggo Mortensen.
“How’s it been 20 years?” Wood asked Astin, who replied, “It’s been 20 years and yet I’m sorry you couldn’t be there that night.

The stars of The Devil Wears Prada briefly reunited onstage during the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards as Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt helped Meryl Streep present, with the three actresses briefly reprising their roles from the beloved 2006 film.
Streep first took the stage alone to give out the award for best actor in a comedy series, but then realized she forgot both her glasses and the envelope containing the winner. To the stage with her missing items came Hathaway and Blunt, who both played assistants to Streep’s Miranda Priestly in the film.

Ah, "The Addams Family." They're creepy and they're kooky. Mysterious and spooky. They're all together ooky. And so on. The ghoulish Addamses were created by cartoonist Charles Addams in the pages of The New Yorker before Hollywood came calling, adapting Addams' comics into a TV series in 1964. The series followed a family of weirdos who live every day like it's Halloween, much to the confusion of the normal folks all around them. The original "The Addams Family" series lasted only two seasons, running between 1964 and 1966, but its impact and influence continued for decades.
Sadly, the majority of the original cast of "The Addams Family" are no longer with us. But there's one main player who is still around.

There’s a famed scene in Peter Jackson’s The Fellowship of the Ring that doesn’t appear in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel. During a quaint moment at the start of their epic journey, Sean Astin’s Samwise Gamgee stops midstride in a grassy field, gripped by a sudden realization. “If I take one more step, it’ll be the farthest away from home I’ve ever been,” he says. And with Frodo’s encouragement, he does, and nothing about their journey is quaint ever again.

When it was announced that Linda Hamilton would be joining Stranger Things for its fifth and final season, it felt like a perfect addition to the cast, as she was a favorite presence in the 1980s, when the series is set. She, too, is a fan of the Netflix show…and that’s precisely why she won’t watch the season she’ll be featured in.
Speaking with Us Weekly, Linda Hamilton said that being cast in Stranger Things will interfere with her appreciation of the show, adding that she won’t be able to finish it like the rest of its fans. “When you really buy into something, you don’t see yourself in it. So I think in a way, it kind of ruined the show for me. I never watch [a project], once I’m in something…It would just completely take me out of the reality of it to see myself in there.

Exclusive: Fathom Events has acquired the fantasy throwback film Man and Witch: The Dance of a Thousand Steps, set to be released nationwide in theaters sometime this summer.
The project marks the return to the big screen for The NeverEnding Story star Tami Stronach, who played the Childlike Empress in that 1984 fantasy film. In Man and Witch she portrays the titular witch alongside her husband Greg Steinbruner, who stars as the titular man.
A passion project for the couple, Man and Witch—inspired by their own love story— was produced under their Paper Canoe Company banner, with Steinbruner also serving as screenwriter. And to make it a complete family affair, the couple’s daughter Maya also stars in a role that’s described as a “powerful being who is not of this world.”
