- DirectorEtan CohenStarsWill FerrellJohn C. ReillyRalph FiennesA humorous take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic mysteries featuring Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. The only truly awful movie that's on this list. One or two laughs don't justify how awkward and bad it is. Talented actors and actresses just floundering because there's no material to work with. I was embarrassed to admit I saw this in the theatre and we're a long way from the quality of Anchorman and Talladega Nights for Will Ferrell.
- DirectorAva DuVernayStarsStorm ReidOprah WinfreyReese WitherspoonAfter the disappearance of her scientist father, three peculiar beings send Meg, her brother, and her friend to space in order to find him.I'm all for diversity and the message of this movie is coming from a good place. But despite the decent visual effects, this movie is boring, the story isn't very interesting and the characters are poorly developed. Unfortunately, it didn't justify the hype.
- DirectorMichael SpierigPeter SpierigStarsHelen MirrenSarah SnookFinn Scicluna-O'PreyEnsconced in her sprawling San Jose, California mansion, eccentric firearm heiress Sarah Winchester (Dame Helen Mirren) believes she is haunted by the souls of people killed by the Winchester repeating rifle.I said in my review for Winchester, the wasted potential in this with the talented cast, the tenured directors (the Spierig brothers) and the interesting subject matter is nuts. An instance where so many talented people came together and yet it's so flat and uninteresting.
- DirectorTim KirkbyStarsJohnny KnoxvilleEleanor Worthington-CoxChris PontiusA daredevil designs and operates his own theme park with his friends. The premise and story behind Action Point is crazy enough to justify the movie but other than watching Johnny Knoxville doing what he does best, the story is non-existent and all the best gags were spoiled in the marketing. If you've seen the trailer, you can skip it and get the same experience.
- DirectorMalcolm D. LeeStarsKevin HartTiffany HaddishRob RiggleA group of high school dropouts is forced to attend night school in hopes that they will pass the GED exam to finish high school.Night School isn't terrible but it's a comedy that's nonsensical without any funny jokes. Hart and Haddish are talented but I maybe laughed twice and there was almost nothing to the plot. You could have heard a pin drop when I was watching it.
- DirectorJohannes RobertsStarsChristina HendricksMartin HendersonBailee MadisonA family of four staying at a secluded mobile home park for the night are stalked and then hunted by three masked psychopaths.Bland and full of implausible beats. The acting was okay but not good enough to recommend the rest of the movie. The only reason it isn't higher up the list is the ending was so dumb I was giggling in the final minutes.
- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsOlivia ColmanEmma StoneRachel WeiszIn early 18th-century England, the status quo at the court is upset when a new servant arrives and endears herself to a frail Queen Anne.A better movie than The Killing of a Sacred Deer but not by leaps and bounds. I credit Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Coleman and Nicholas Hoult for helping me get through the movie. It was so weird in an intentional way (I credit that to director Yorgos Lanthimos) and it felt like it was trying to be funny without knowing how to go about it.
- DirectorJ.A. BayonaStarsChris PrattBryce Dallas HowardRafe SpallWhen the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.Fallen Kingdom isn't without cool moments but the gigantic plot holes and bizarre character decisions ruined the movie for me. I walked out of the theatre just baffled by how badly this movie missed the mark.
- DirectorJeff WadlowStarsLucy HaleTyler PoseyViolett BeaneA harmless game of Truth or Dare among friends turns deadly when someone - or something - begins to punish those who tell a lie or refuse the dare.Started off okay but quickly devolved into the kind of movie I expected it to be. It went against the grain with the ending which I wasn't sure how I felt about it. Blumhouse puts out a lot of quality movies, this is on the other side of the scale.
- DirectorPeter BergStarsMark WahlbergLauren CohanIko UwaisA small team of elite American intelligence officers, part of a top-secret tactical command unit, try to smuggle a mysterious police officer with sensitive information out of Indonesia.Mile 22 isn't really bad, its just generic and there's very little in it that's memorable or worth discussing. Considering the previous collaborations between Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg (Deepwater Horizon, Lone Survivor, Patriots Day), I expected better. It's too bad they didn't give Iko Uwais more crazy action stuff to do.
- DirectorChristian RiversStarsHera HilmarRobert SheehanHugo WeavingIn a post-apocalyptic world where cities ride on wheels and consume each other to survive, two people meet in London and try to stop a conspiracy. My first honourable mention, Mortal Engines has cool visuals and a few choice concepts but they telegraph the overall arc pretty badly, you don't care about the characters at all (another where did that come from? romance) and if you don't see what's going to happen in the end coming from a mile away, I don't know what to tell you. It's insane the amount of money that was put into this movie and that this was the final product.
- DirectorJames WanStarsJason MomoaAmber HeardWillem DafoeArthur Curry, the human-born heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, goes on a quest to prevent a war between the worlds of ocean and land. This is probably the most controversial choice and it's my second honourable mention. If you liked Aquaman, I'm not going to dissuade you and that's fine. Other than the visuals and Jason Momoa's charismatic presence, I was either bored or laughing at Aquaman, not with it.
