Serena Williams will be the host of the 2024 Espy Awards.
ESPN announced the pick of the tennis legend as this year’s Espys host during Disney’s upfront presentation to advertisers Tuesday, with American Idol host Ryan Seacrest breaking the news on stage. The event will be held July 11.
The Espy Awards are ESPN’s annual awards show celebrating the best of sports. Last year Patrick Mahomes and LeBron James were among the big winners, and for the first time the program went without a host (due in part to the ongoing Writers Guild strike).
Williams, of course, retired from professional tennis nearly two years ago.
That being said, she has kept busy, with media being one of her top priorities. Williams inked a two-book deal with Random House Publishing last year, beginning with an “intimate” memoir.

Shōgun is a limited series no more: FX is gearing up for more installments of the historic drama.
The renewal was expected and foreshadowed by star-producer Hiroyuki Sanada closing a deal to continue as Lord Yoshii Toranaga. Also back are co-creators, executive producers and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo as well as EP Michaela Clavell.
For now, FX and streaming partner Hulu are saying that they are working with the estate of Shōgun author James Clavell to to develop two additional seasons.
There is no mention of a green light, and a start date for production has not been set, but a writers’ room is being assembled and will begin this summer. There is also no information on source material, whether the new seasons will stay within the Shōgun universe or will also draw from the other books in Clavell’s Asian Saga.

Summer is coming, but streamers want you to bundle up.
It has long not been an original thought to say that streaming is starting to look more and more like cable, but the industry has been taking new steps to ensure the comparison doesn’t die. On Tuesday, Comcast chief Brian L. Roberts revealed a coming bundle between NBCUniversal’s Peacock, Apple’s Apple TV+, and Netflix’s, well, Netflix. We did not get a price point or a launch date, but we do have a name: StreamSaver. Roberts promised significant savings, hence the name.
If the StreamSaver announcement sounds familiar, it’s probably because that is the precise promise of an also newly announced Summer 2024 Disney bundle between Disney+, Hulu, and Max. Disney has long-experienced the strength of a bundle with two options for consumers to combine its in-house streaming services: the duo is Disney+ and Hulu, the trio adds ESPN+.

One the best, most underrated and ambitious TV shows of that past few years is back and y’all need to saddle up for it. Launched in 2022 on Prime Video, Season 1 of Outer Range at first looked like a moodier Yellowstone, with Josh Brolin as Royal Abbott, a gruff Wyoming rancher trying to save his property from a land dispute with his oddball neighbors. Meanwhile, he and wife Cecilia (Lili Taylor) were also dealing with their two sons, Rhett and Perry (Lewis Pullman and Tom Pelphrey) and the granddaughter left behind by Perry’s missing wife. Average Western soapy stuff. That was until shortly into the series premiere, Outer Range went Outer Limits: Royal discovered a massive, bottomless and unexplained hole out in his west pasture. And when his neighbor’s son was accidentally killed by Perry in a bar fight, he then disposed of his body into said mysterious hole.

The ABC drama is moving to 10 p.m. on Thursdays and will reportedly be losing series regulars Jake Borelli and Midori Francis amid a budget cut. Will Season 21 be the end of the road for Grey’s Anatomy? “Not at all,” Disney TV Group President Craig Erwich told Deadline. He explained that the timeslot move from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. is a “great opportunity for ABC to launch a new show [Doctor Odyssey], as well as to keep Grey’s on a night where it’s been extraordinarily successful for many years.” The show is nearing the end of its milestone 20th season and remains the longest-running medical drama on TV. “I think the show is creatively firing on all cylinders and continues to...

In 2014, Naomi Watts voiced an animated version of herself in the “BoJack Horseman” episode “One Trick Pony.” The Watts in Hollywoo — the “BoJack” stand-in for the entertainment industry’s epicenter, inhabited mostly by anthropomorphic animals — is starring opposite BoJack in a biopic about his frenemy, Mr. Peanutbutter. She appears on set preparing to play Diane, a burgeoning writer. The meta joke is the actress accepted the part to get a break from emotionally draining, praiseworthy performances.
“I just keep getting pigeonholed as these complex characters in highly acclaimed movies,” the animated Watts bemoans to a character who is a parody of host Ryan Seacrest (A Ryan Seacrest Type). “For once, I would just love to phone it in and play a two-dimensional girl in a rom-com with no inner life of her own. That’s kind of the reason I got into this business.”
Ten years later, that tongue-in-cheek guest appearance now feels almost prophetic.

Theres’s no stopping Shōgun. FX and Hulu have confirmed that it’s working with the James Clavell estate to produce not just one, but two more seasons of its excellent period drama, with star Hiroyuki Sanada attached to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga. FX announced on Thursday, May 16 that Shōgun‘s key creative partners — including co-creators, executive producers, and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, executive producer Michaela Clavell, and series star and producer Sanada — are on board for the development of future seasons. FX says the story and characters viewers met in Season 1 will “continue the saga that will likely yield two additional seasons of the drama series.” An exact production window has not been locked in, but a writers’ room is currently being assembled and will begin work this summer. Shōgun‘s 10-episode first season is FX’s most-watched show ever based on global hours streamed, the network says.

More “Shōgun” is in the works.
The hit FX for Hulu series is in development in two more seasons; “Shōgun” was originally announced as a limited series.
Co-creators, executive producers, and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo would return for Seasons 2 and 3, which FX says are now “likely” to happen, along with executive producer Michaela Clavell and series star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada. Production has not been set as the additional seasons have not yet been ordered — but a writers’ room is being assembled and will begin in the summer. The estate of novelist James Clavell, whose work the series is based on, has also approved the additional seasons.
So, about that whole “limited” thing… IndieWire can confirm the series is being entered as a Drama series at this year’s Emmys, not in the Limited Series category.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon quietly began distributing a version of its show as a podcast earlier this month.

Sarah Drew is making herself right at home at Hallmark. The Grey’s Anatomy star is set to play Emily Lane in the upcoming Hallmark Media series Mistletoe Murders, Deadline reports. The show is based on the Audible podcast narrated by Cobie Smulders and Raymond Ablack. Emily is “smart, tough, and observant, but also kind, empathetic, and charming with a great — albeit dry — sense of humor,” according to the outlet’s description. She runs her small-town Christmas-themed store Under the Mistletoe, but she also investigates local murders with the help of a local police detective and his teen daughter. While Emily appears to be a “good-natured mystery lover,” she is “hiding a secret past that, if exposed, threatens to destroy the new life she has built in Fletcher’s Grove.” Color us intrigued! Production on the first season is set to start next month in Toronto. A premiere date has not been announced.

Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
A few days before “Bridgerton” Season 3 premieres worldwide, an eager fan muscled her way through the small crowd hovering around star Nicola Coughlan at the world premiere in New York City.
That fan would be this author’s mother, delighted to see her favorite character from one of her favorite shows (and she said as much in the moment). When Coughlan arrived at the IndieWire offices a couple days later, I expected the confident, funny, and affable actor now in month four of an international press tour — but I had also already witnessed her attentiveness and compassion firsthand in the best way.
“I believe strongly that everyone needs to do a year in retail,” Coughlan said as we discussed her journey to “Bridgerton.” “That...

Everything you need to know to become a diamond of the first water.
In the world of Bridgerton, navigating the exclusive social sphere known as “the ton” requires mastery of etiquette and form. One must know when to curtsy in greeting or simply nod, how to address everyone from a duchess to a viscount, and the most fashionable names to drop into conversation. But how does one acquire such inscrutable information?
Fret not — this Bridgerton glossary includes some of the most important whos, whats, and hows of the British aristocracy. A trove of information like this will surely help even an obscure nobody become the diamond of the season.
The lowest-ranking noble in the British peerage, a baron is entitled to feel superior toward untitled gentry alone.

When co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman learned The Good Doctor would end with its current and seventh season, they “laid down on the floor and contemplated that for its truth, then pretty quickly had an idea of where we wanted to go with that final season,” Friedman reveals, before adding, “but this is definitely bittersweet… I could have continued to tell stories for Shaun [Murphy], and Freddie [Highmore] forever.” In the penultimate episode, there was plenty of sweetness for the show’s doctors: There was a wonderful impromptu 2 a.m. wedding for Morgan (Fiona Gubelmann) and Park (Will Yun Lee); the return of original character Claire (Antonia Thomas) and her romantic reunion with Kalu (Chuku Modu); and Shaun, with the help of his wife Lea (Paige Spara) explaining to young addict Hannah how Dr. Glassman (Richard Schiff) can help her the way he helped Shaun, his “nonbiological son.” Finally, there was Glassman quietly telling Shaun,...

Guitar legend Slash is set to perform with Cleto and the Cletones across three nights next week on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
From May 20-22, the Guns N’ Roses guitarist will perform songs from his new record “Orgy Of The Damned,” an album of blues covers that features collaborations with Demi Lovato, Chris Stapleton, Steven Tyler, and Iggy Pop.
Slash isn’t the first artist to stick around at Jkl for more than one night. Metallica made headlines in March of 2023 when they performed songs on the show four nights in a row, and it was six years ago that David Letterman’s bandleader Paul Shaffer joined the show’s house band for a week of shows in Brooklyn.
Slash has appeared solo on the Kimmel show 4 times for performances or interviews, most recently in 2022. He also played the show twice with his band Velvet Revolver.

Rulers cannot, as the old anecdote goes, physically roll back the tide on command, but “The Regime” would not be the first piece of art (or history) to show that with enough money, guns, sycophants, and social media, dictators can create a manufactured reality where it sure seems like they can. The HBO limited series explores what it’s like to live in the reality of Elena Vernham (Kate Winslet), chancellor and de-facto dictator of an unnamed country vaguely located near the Danube.
What it’s like is kind of a nightmare. Elena’s palace is as imposing and grand as it is nonsensically tailored to her whims, and the people whose security, power, and lives depend on pleasing her can never quite anticipate what she wants next. That unpredictability is baked into every technical aspect of “The Regime,” from the way that odd instruments like pan flutes and didgeridoos...

While for the most part, “everything was positive” about finding out S.W.A.T. had been uncanceled for a second time, there was one heartbreaking part, according to executive producer Andrew Dettmann. During Season 7, Hondo (Shemar Moore) has had to say goodbye to three members of 20 Squad. Street (Alex Russell) transferred to Long Beach, Luca (Kenny Johnson) was forced to retire after an injury when he interrupted a robbery off-duty, and Deacon (Jay Harrington) has chosen to retire. While Harrington is still around as Deacon adjusts to his next chapter, such is not the case for Russell or Johnson, who both had farewell episodes. “I would love to see them back,” Dettmann tells TV Insider. “The one heartbreaking thing was when we were told this is the end, Season 7, giving Street and Alex that goodbye, making part of Long Beach Pd, giving Luca that heartbreaking goodbye that Kenny played so well, those...

‘The View’: Whoopi Goldberg Makes Fiery Defense of Chiefs Kicker’s Controversial Commencement Speech
The View got off to a running start on Thursday’s new episode as Whoopi Goldberg opened the show’s “Hot Topics” segment with an impassioned defense of Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, whose controversial commencement speech has led to calls for his termination from the Super Bowl-winning team. After playing a clip of the speech, in which Butker claimed that women have been told “diabolical lies” about gender roles and that “the majority” of the new graduates in the crowd were “most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.” That was just one part of the speech, which also criticized President Joe Biden, reproductive rights, diversity, equity, and inclusion (Dei) initiatives, and the LGBTQ+ community and encouraged men in the audience to “be unapologetic in your masculinity.” After Butker delivered that address to the Class of 2024 at Benedictine College, a Catholic university,...
