Fast & Furious 7 (2015)
Despite the tragic circumstances this movie is a huge fun ride.
So last night we finally watched the latest installment of the Fast Saga:Fast and Furious 7. In September 2013 Paul Walker died during the filming of "Fast & Furious 7″ in a car accident. To honor him the film was completed with a modified script. The result is not only a furious action blockbusters, but also a worthy memorial to this deceased star. While Walker had already shot most of his scenes to complete the film, for the remaining parts Walkers brothers Caleb and Cody had been used in some scenes with CGI and body doubles. In the end the additional work and time spend on this was very well worth it. The fact that one of the main characters was killed during the shooting of this movie won't be noticed in the film until the very appropriate sentimental end.
With its great charm, wit and attention to detail "Fast & Furious 7″ is a perfected action blockbuster. The greatest strength of the film is in my opinion that it never takes itself too serious despite its sad history. If you are a moviegoers that values a sophisticated and logical plot development and a realistic representations you are wrong here. This movie got hyperbole wherever you look, but that is not a negative thing in my opinion.
Compared to the previous installments "Fast & Furious 7″ tops the predecessors in all respects and goes the extra mile. You see tuned cars drop out of a plane, drivers changing cars during full speed (several times) or crashing though the window of one Abu Dhabi Skyscraper only to end up in a neighboring skyscraper again. Epic.
Especially the scene where the wounded agent Hobbs dismisses himself from Hospital with the words "Daddy has to work" by blowing up his plaster arm by flexing his biceps may soon gain cult status. In addition to the well-known stars of the previous movies, including the spin offs "Tokyo Drift", the cast was even expanded by by two high-calibers starring Jason Statham and Kurt Russell who present themselves in top form and as a valuable addition to the movie.
You can tell that for everyone involved in the movie it was a matter of the heart to put Paul Walker the worthy monument that is Fast and Furious 7. For me this latest installment is till date by far the strongest film in the series and despite the tragic circumstances a huge fun ride.
Robot Overlords (2014)
A pretty Good and entertaining Science Fiction Flick.
Robot Overlords is the story of Planet Earth being conquered by robots from another galaxy and the human survivors must stay in their homes, or risk incineration. A small group of kids discovered a way to switch of the tracking mechanism by power shocks so they can sneak around without detection. In the beginning they use this for a bit of fun before beginning to take on the faith of human uprising, gathering the adults and working together to take down the big enemy and its human supporters.
Since I had seen the first Trailer of this some time ago on another Premiere screening I was really looking forward to see this movie. Of course cast names like Sir Ben Kingsley or Gillian Anderson pull viewers on this flick, but it is the youngsters like the Australian Callan McAuliffe or Ella Hunt who in the end positively surprise in their roles.
During the Movie we learn that the Robots are trying to learn from the humans and some humans are helping them with this task guided by Mediators of the Robots. Sir Ben Kingsley as a supporter of the Robots who in the final loses importance to them and gets killed as well plays his role as eccentric collaborator brilliantly. He is just cool as the rather careless bad guy.
Gillian Anderson in the role of the former Teacher and Mother was surprising different as known from other movies I remember to have watched with her. I really hope to see more movies with her on the big screen in the future or even better a comeback of the X-Files. I really liked the story and how it developed despite some scenes were easy to precast. The Scenic views of some scenes are incredible, loved the wide forests, maybe because here in the sand pit you do not see these things. Australian actor Callan McAuliffe was as well very good and the movie had even the one or other comedic moment like when Sean controls the robot and makes him do stupid poses.
Verdict: It is surely not the best Science Fiction movie ever created, but that is not the aim anyways. I found the movie pretty cool. I would have loved to have more information on how this all happened and the Robots conquered earth, but well. If you like Science Fiction movies than Robot Overlords is certainly one to watch and be entertained.
From A to B (2014)
A fun Arabic style Roadtrip....
We had last night been at the Advanced Screening of Ali F. Mostafa's Movie From A to B at the Vox Cinemas at the Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi. It was the first time for me to be at the Vox Cinemas in the Yas Mall and man was it an experience.
The Movie itself is playing in the year 2011 when Omar finds himself still racked with the guilt over the death of his best friend Hady 5 years ago and whose girl he married which was the reason for the the stress they had.
Just days away from the birth of his first child, he decides to take the road trip they never got to take and reaches out to his estranged high school friends Jay (Albutairi) and Ramy (Alfons) who have lost touch since Hady's death to take the road trip in his memory., much to the dismay of his pregnant wife.
Jay, now a playboy / wannabe DJ, and Ramy, an #activist (with 737 twitter followers!), take some convincing, but finally agree to the trip. The boys decide to drive from Abu Dhabi – via Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria to arrive in Beirut, on what would have been Hady's twenty-fifth birthday.
Their journey is interesting and you will see quite some places you are familiar with in this flick which is pretty awesome. As well the scenery is partially amazing, specially Jordan. It made me feel during the movie already like "I wanna go there".
The story is told interesting and despite the movie being mainly in Arabic I followed the subtitles well enough to get everything. The movie did not bore me for even a minute.
As a classic Roadtrip Movie with Arabic charm of course things have to go wrong during the trip and they do. A camel gets hit, they get arrested by the Police and so on. I don't want to take away to much of the story here but having as well some political influences about the war in Syria and the difficulties in Lebanon itself at that time is enriching the movie very well and I walked out of the Movie still thinking how horrible the situation in Syria must be.
The Actors had been quite good and specially Fahad who plays Jay/Yousef was brilliant in my opinion and very entertaining. Overall it is an entertaining flick which is giving you a good time in the cinema. It is certainly worth watching and having a good time even if you do not speak native Arabic like me.
