Anime is all but defined by the action shonen genre in the eyes of the general public. Much like the box office used to be dominated by superhero movies, the biggest anime tend to be action shonen shows about teenage boys awakening some big power and using the magic of friendship to overcome challenges. This can be a problem when reducing the medium to a single genre for newcomers. Still, after you watch a few shonen, you realize that the ones that stand out and become phenomena are those that take those formulas and tropes and make them their own.
One such anime is "Black Cover," studio Pierrot's adaptation of Yūki Tabata's manga of the same name. The story is set in a world where everyone can use magic, and we follow a boy named Asta who was born without magic — but instead with anti-magic abilities — who nevertheless wants...

Demon Slayer has been one of the most popular anime of the modern generation. The manga earned worldwide fame, and then it was adapted into an anime. Apart from the plot and the action-packed sequences, it had a top-notch animation. Throughout all the seasons and films, the fans enjoyed the animation the most. Few anime could match the level of Ufotable.
Following the massive success of Demon Slayer anime, Ufotable became an admired animation studio. Seeing how they transformed Koyoharu Gotouge’s magnum opus into a visual treat, Studio Pierrot wanted to follow that path to achieve the same level with Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3. The animation industry is divided between a limited number of animation studios, where each one of them has an outstanding collection of anime series. While some are renowned for their plot, and some for their animation, among so many studios comes Studio Pierrot which has a history of producing some excellent shonen titles. The studio’s collection is massive and equally impressive as it has created anime series like Tokyo Ghoul, Black Clover, Naruto, Bleach, and many more.

In a recent interview, Studio Pierrot’s Managing Director, Kiero Itsumi, shed some light on the studio’s approach to handling the working conditions of its employees amidst the evolving landscape of anime production.

However, based on Itsumi’s comments it seems that Pierrot has taken major steps to ensure that those working behind the scenes to deliver the final product are well rewarded and in a healthy environment.
The managing director began by noting that anime’s market has expanded, and that these days works of higher quality needed to be produced so that they could complete globally. This has also led to the increase in various costs.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

"Chainsaw Man" was a challenge to adapt from the very beginning. Not just because of its violence and sexual content, but because of its many faces. Sometimes the series is a knowingly stupid action thriller. At other times, it's a bittersweet coming-of-age tale, a skin-crawling horror story, a commentary on labor under late capitalism, and a heartfelt ode to bad movies. The protagonist Denji is an aspirational everyman who fights devils with chainsaws, but he's also a sadboy whose pitiful dreams are easily manipulated. Rather than simply alternating between comedy, horror, and tragedy, creator Tatsuki Fujimoto blends them so that the reader is constantly pulled in whatever direction they least expect. He's the young comics equivalent of Bong Joon-ho, if Bong had a deep love of Syfy schlock like "Sharknado."
Adapting "Chainsaw Man" required threading together these contradictory impulses, while simultaneously transforming the material so that it worked on screen.

The success of Korean shows “Vincenzo” and “Squid Game” and Japanese anime such as “Attack on Titan” are justifying Netflix’s heavy spending on Asian film and TV content.

After 15 years and a humongous impact in the industry, “Naruto” (and Shippuuden) finished in 2017 and with it an era that defined and still continues to define the shonen action genre in anime, a style that begun with “Dragonball” and “One Piece” and was cemented with the adventures of the young ninja and “Bleach”. Many similar, to the point of identical titles were released during and after “Naruto” ended, in essence giving a narrative identity to the category that looked annoyingly like this

Sony is offering PlayStation Plus subscribers two months of access to Funimation Now Premium, completely free of charge. Access to the anime streaming service – which otherwise would cost you about $12 – is the company’s way of apologizing for disappointing their consumers earlier this month.
Every full moon, PlayStation Plus subscribers receive access to a select number of free games. May’s selection, however, was kind of a bummer. After being offered a choice between two subpar titles – a city-building game called Cities: Skylines and the self-explanatory Farming Simulator 19 – fans flocked to social media to voice their dissatisfaction with Sony’s latest menu.
While it may seem kind of uncalled for to complain about free content, please remember that, up until quite recently, gamers were not required to pay for a subscription just to be able to use their already expensive consoles.

Years ago, we had the big 3 of Shonen anime. Naruto, Bleach and One Piece. Now there seems to be a new big 3 for the new generation of anime viewers and that would be One Piece, My Hero Academia and the subject of this review: Black Clover… or at least it hopes to be.
Black Clover takes place in a world full of magic and in this world, we focus on two characters: Asta and Yuno. Asta is the hyperactive, head-strong and passionate character but has no access to any magic…at least not in the traditional sense. Yuno is cool, calm and collected and is practically an ace magic user who only seems to excel at whatever he does. However, they both share a dream of becoming the Wizard King so they’re rivals as well as childhood friends. Judging from the 10 episodes I’ve seen, the premise is that...

In the plethora of shonen coming out of the anime industry, “Black Clover”manages to distinguish itself (to a point at least) by functioning as a tribute to a number of titles in the category. Let us take things from the beginning though.
The story takes place in a kind of medieval world, where every single person is able to practice magic. Asta and Yuno are two orphans who want the same thing: to become the Wizard King. Locked in a friendly rivalry, they work hard towards their goal. While Yuno excels at magic, Asta has a problem uncommon in this world: he has no magic powers, an issue he tries to overcome by training his body excessively. However, on the day they receive their grimoires, they surprise everyone. To reach their goal, they will each find their own path to greatness—with or without magic.

Starting back in 2015, the Black Clover manga by Yuki Tabata quickly grew popular in Weekly Shonen Jump.
