On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Scared of a Spider Bite Birthing a Thousand Spiders on Your Face? In ‘The Manitou,’ It’s Worse.
At a certain point in time, we lived in a world where we could wander into a movie playing on some random network (Rip Upn) and get sucked in with no knowledge of what it was, the behind-the-scenes stories it held, or even a whiff of IMDb trivia. It was a sad, bleak era. That is how I happened upon “The Manitou” one lazy summer Sunday. Everything about this oddball horror movie...

In what marks one of Dan Lin’s first green lights as the new film chief at the streamer, “The Woman in Cabin 10” follows a travel journalist (Knightley) assigned to cover the launch of a luxury yacht. When she witnesses a passenger tossed overboard in the dead of night, no one believes her story as all on the ship have been accounted for. Doggedly she searches for answers, putting her own life in danger as the boat barrels through the desolate North Sea.
Ware’s book is beloved, and marks a juicy protagonist role for Academy Award nominee Knightley. The film will be directed by Simon Stone, whose credits include the 2021 Netflix project “The Dig,” starring Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes and Lily James,...

The Chi’s Emmett is a smooth talker, as he himself notes in this week’s midseason premiere. “I’ve got the gift of gab,” he confidently tells Jada and Darnell. “With women, not criminals!” his mother shoots back. It’s an important point, given the conversation that Emmett thinks he’s ready for by the end of the episode. (Spoiler alert: He has no idea how much worse things can get.)
And that’s really saying something, given that Emmett was already at a lifetime low, having just botched a murder attempt on the high-powered gangster who runs the South Side of Chicago.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 did not just have a ‘two’ in its name, it also gave players two Spider-Man’s to play with. That’s just one example of how much thought and effort the makers at Insomniac Studios put into making the game. And it did pay off. It turned out to be a critical and financial success when it launched in October 2023.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gave players the opportunity to web through Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens while making the two Spider-men Peter Parker and Miles Morale perform some aerobatics above New York’s skyscrapers. Most of us have quietly curtailed our lockdown hobbies, but internet creator Teigan Reamsbottom is still getting up at 4 a.m. to curate camp-classic pop culture video clips. He also does his best to improve the video quality using a dedicated gaming computer he’s stuffed full of Ram and a software suite that uses machine-learning algorithms to preserve the clips’ original characteristics.
In a world where movies can be vanished for tax write-offs and physical media can be scarce, it’s heartening to see pop-culture artifacts unearthed — even if it means that no ’80s or ’90s celebrity is safe.
Exhibit A: from the heyday of “Sex and the City,” an interview with Kim Cattrall where she scat sings while her then-husband Mark plays an upright bass. The clip has long been an internet fixture (it was once the subject of an exhibit at Lower East Side gallery THNK1994). It...

Whether it’s British spies vs. American superheroes in “The Avengers,” or Noah Baumbach’s “Kicking and Screaming” not starring Will Ferrell, movies that share the same title are fun oddities that recall anecdotes of auditoriums mistakenly shown the wrong films. The Pitch: You’ve Heard of Jump Scares, But Are You Ready for… Reverse Jump Scares?
When Foreman and I launched IndieWire After Dark, a big part of our motivation was the fact that we were burned out on the existing midnight movie canon. No disrespect to “The Room” or “Eraserhead” or “Rocky Horror,” but we had seen them so many times that we felt called to mine other eras of film history for new cinematic oddities.

Is Paramount+ cleaning house?
It seems that every scripted series that doesn't have Taylor Sheridan's name attached is getting the pink slip.
The latest series to get canceled is Joe Pickett, which recently wrapped its sophomore run on the service.
We get it: The streaming bubble has burst.
Amid the SAG-AFTRA strike and coming off the WGA strike, some controversial decisions have been made across the whole breadth of the business.
But this latest cancellation from Paramount+ hurts, mainly because the series didn't waste a single scene.
Paramount+ recently caught heat when it promoted the season finale as the series finale before walking the footage back.
These things happen.
It happened with Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin on Max, which went on to get renewed, so maybe it was a mistake.
But it doesn't get away from the fact that we're losing a gem of a series that delivered on many fronts.

Joe Pickett will not return for a third season. Paramount+ has canceled the series, starring Michael Dorman, after two seasons.
The series was originally commissioned by Spectrum in early 2021, which announced prior to the debut of season two that it would be shutting down Spectrum Originals. Paramount+ had the streaming rights to the series and seasons 1 and 2 will continue to be available on the service.
Joe Pickett followed a dedicated game warden (Dorman) and his family as they navigated the shifting sociopolitical climate of a small rural town on the verge of economic collapse.
In the most recent second season, the Wyoming game warden, played by Dorman, discovers a hunter murdered in the mountains and realizes his is just one of a series of gruesome murders. To solve the case and catch the killer, Joe must navigate a radical anti-hunting activist, a ghoulish set of twins living off the grid and his own tortured past.

On Friday nights — and special occasions! — IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: It’s a Wonderful Night for Eyebrows!
Don’t tell the Seventh-day Adventists, but Halloween and Christmas are inextricably linked.
Film lovers can thank Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” for the holidays’ most popular narrative connection — but slasher Santas and Yuletide ghosts existed way before Jack Skellington hit Christmas Town. The connection makes sense. The Western world’s two biggest holidays are contrasting yet complementary: theatrical celebrations of excess and society-wide make-believe that tickle our imaginations, feed our appetites, and provide pseudo-intellectuals with the perfect excuse to misunderstand Pagan tradition.

“What were they before they were leftovers?” That’s the dramatic meat hook on which Bob Balaban hangs his giddily middling 1989 horror comedy “Parents,” a surrealist satire set in 1950s suburbia, best likened to a chunky jello mold filled with human toes. I’ll admit, I wouldn’t serve cannibalism cinema this underbaked to mixed company; let alone the hubby’s new boss and his one-scene-having wife. Sharon Horgan was walking into an osteopath appointment in her native Ireland when she got the news she was double Emmy-nominated for writing and starring in Bad Sisters.
The show, which is adapted from a Flemish series, and streams on Apple TV+, follows the Garvey sisters who—spoiler alert— conspire to murder their sister’s manipulative and abusive husband.
Horgan, though delighted with her nominations, managed to “keep it in” during her medical appointment, she laughed. Although hers is the only acting nomination on the show, Horgan hopes the whole team can come to LA for the Emmys.
For now, she is working hard on writing Season 2, as the show’s many fans anxiously await the next installment.
“I was working until 1:30 in the morning on my rewrites,” she said. “I feel like the thing we wanted to do with the second series is to make it in a lot of ways very familiar,...

This April 19 marks the 30th anniversary of the violent end of the siege of the religious sect, the Branch Davidians lead by David Koresh. Eighty people died in the fire set in their compound outside of Waco by members of the cult after law enforcement had attempted to flush them out by introducing tear gas. The standoff had begun 51 days earlier when Koresh and members of this sect ambushed Atf agents who had arrived at the complex to executed federal warrants on charges of illegal manufacture and possession of machine guns and destructive devices. Four Atf agents were killed along with six members of the sect.

Plot: This topical series focuses on the fallout of the Waco disaster: the trials of the surviving members of the Brand Davidian sect, which forces them to explore their own complicity in supporting a young Vernon Howell’s ascent to become their prophet David Koresh; the birth of the militia movement and more specifically a critical look at what happens when a marginalized population, disenfranchised by the federal government gives rise to homegrown terrorist, Timothy McVeigh.
Review: Back in 2018, Showtime’s six-episode series Waco recreated the tragic siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Texas by the FBI. With a stellar cast led by Michael Shannon as FBI negotiator Gary Noesner and Taylor Kitsch as Branch Davidian cult leader David Koresh, Waco was met with positive yet mixed reviews. Many felt the workmanlike drama was too sympathetic towards Koresh and his followers but praised Kitsch’s performance and that of the ensemble cast.

As working mothers with public-facing careers, Boston Strangler stars Carrie Coon and Keira Knightley related to their reporter characters on a rather intimate level.
With Coon and Knightley portraying Boston Record American investigative journalists Jean Cole and Loretta McLaughlin, respectively, both actors understood the familial sacrifices that their characters made in order to chronicle the 13 women who were murdered by the “Boston Stranger” in the early 1960s. Their reporting also brought great danger to them and their families, as their newspaper made a point to capitalize on their gender by uncharacteristically publishing byline and crime scene photos of them. As performers, Coon and Knightley know full well that their images are also used to help sell their work, so they certainly understood their characters’ reluctance to do the same.
For Coon, Matt Ruskin’s “Fincher-esque” thriller presented an opportunity to play a female hero in a way that actually felt female.

Dynamic of an actress as she may be, Keira Knightley remains quite stuck in the past. As she brilliantly makes each role she plays her own, she consistently transports us into different time periods whether it’s WWII, 5th century Ad (King Arthur), or 18th century England (The Duchess). This time around, Knightley is taken to the early 1960s in Boston Strangler, the new journalism crime drama written and directed by Matt Ruskin (Crown Heights)...

‘Teen Mom’ Alum Ryan Edwards Arrested For Stalking, Violating Order Amid Divorce From Wife Mackenzie
Just days after Mackenzie Edwards filed for divorce from “Teen Mom” alum Ryan Edwards, he was arrested.
The 35-year-old reality star was taken into custody on March 1, for stalking and violating an order of protection, according to a press release from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department in Tennessee.
The arrest comes two days after Mackenzie called it quits with Ryan and filed for divorce after six years of marriage.
Last month Mackenzie was arrested after Ryan had been served an order of protection and was ordered to vacate the couple’s home in Tennessee. Mackenzie alleged that Ryan violated the order of protection when he contacted her father. The next day, on Feb. 10, Mackenzie reported Ryan to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office after claiming he posted revealing photos of her on his Instagram page and called her lewd names.

(To celebrate "Titanic" and its impending 25th-anniversary re-release, we've put together a week of explorations, inquires, and deep dives into James Cameron's box office-smashing disaster epic.)
In 1912, the Titanic -- a ship that was called "unsinkable" -- hit an iceberg and sank, killing over 1,500 of the souls onboard. Some of those people were well-known business magnates, authors, and company owners. Many of those celebrities (some of whom survived) appeared as on-screen characters in James Cameron's 1997 epic film "Titanic." Some of them include Molly Brown (called "The Unsinkable Molly Brown"), played by Kathy Bates, business tycoon John Jacob Astor IV (Eric Braeden), Colonel Archibald Gracie IV (Bernard Fox), a writer who penned a book about the disaster, Benjamin Guggenheim (Michael Ensign) the mining titan, Isidor Straus (Lew Palter) and his wife Ida (Elsa Raven), the former owner of R.H. Macy and Company, among many others.

Former UFC champion Cain Velasquez pled not guilty to felony attempted murder on Monday.
Velasquez was arrested in February and is facing charges of attempted murder, assault and more after allegedly firing at a man who he claimed sexually abused his four-year-old son at a family-run daycare.
The former heavyweight champ is now on bail after appearing in Santa Clara County Superior Court on Monday where he pled guilty. Judge Arthur Bocanegra allowed him to post 1 million bail, despite the prosecutor’s opposition. The district attorney said the victims are “terrified” and living in a hotel.
Harry Goularte, the man Velasquez alleged assaulted his child, was riding in a pickup truck when the car chase and subsequent shooting occurred. Goularte’s stepfather was wounded in the incident.
Velasquez has filed a civil lawsuit against Goularte accusing him and his family of negligence and sexual battery.

As the drama with Warner Bros. Discovery has managed to remind us recently, not every film is assured of a release, theatrical or otherwise. Sometimes a film costs too much — and takes too long to film — to seem like a logical, profitable project. Other times, irreconcilable differences between cast and crew members can derail a film altogether. When it comes to "Something's Got to Give", it was a bit of all three. The film was designed as a reimagining of the Cary Grant classic "My Favorite Wife," directed by George Cukor and starring Dean Martin alongside Monroe.
On paper, that's a recipe for a thoroughly solid film. It was also the last that Monroe would ever shoot but never got the chance to complete. Production stalled when 20th Century Fox fired Monroe in 1962, and it halted entirely after her death just a few months later. Much of the conversation surrounding the film focuses,...

Joy Corrigan left nothing to the imagination in a revealing frock. Pic credit: @ImageCollect.com/StarMaxWorldwide
Joy Corrigan certainly turned heads as she stepped out in a revealing dress.
The Victoria’s Secret Model left little to the imagination with the figure-hugging outfit that showed lots of hip, thigh, and leg.
She wore the sparkling cut-out frock for a quick trip out that must have had heads turning.
It clung tightly to her stunning figure and really showed just why her talent is so constantly in demand.
Joy, who was snapped holding her phone in one hand and a small bag in the other, has amassed thousands of followers on social media and is one of the world’s top models.
And it’s easy to see why when you see stunning pics like this.

Exclusive: The Francis Lawrence-directed feature adaptation of the Suzanne Collins prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has added 11 actors in its final casting round.
This includes Tony Award nominee Fionnula Flanagan, who’ll play Grandma’am, young Coriolanus Snow’s (Tom Blyth) strict grandmother.
