It’s almost time for the Fantasia Film Festival! North America’s premiere genre festival has become the place to be if you’re a horror aficionado, and as a proud Montrealer, I get a kick out of the fact that it all takes place in my home city. I’ve been attending the festival for many years, and I always end up seeing some incredible movies. Last year’s Fantasia featured the Canadian premiere of what’s probably the best horror movie of the last year or so – Late Night With The Devil, and this year’s program seems certain to be another winner, with Fantasia announcing the first wave of titles today.
Here are some of the highlights:

David Cronenberg is known as one of the masters of body horror films, and the director is in a unique position to be one of three Cronenbergs who are partaking in this world. Indeed, his children are now filmmaking peers who specialize in the wretched and strange. Brandon Cronenberg has made splashes with his films Possessor and Infinity Pool. Now, Caitlin Cronenberg has stepped up with her directorial debut, Humane. David’s newest project, The Shrouds, is set to premiere at Cannes and The Film Stage has revealed previously unreleased images from the film as well as its new poster.
Vincent Cassel (who worked with Cronenberg on Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method) takes on the role of Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. There’s no rule that says that when the son or daughter of a famous filmmaker becomes a director too, he or she has to follow in their parent’s artistic footsteps. But the children of director David Cronenberg have turned out to be chips off the old shock-theater block. In movies like “Possessor” and “Infinity Pool,” the 44-year-old Brandon Cronenberg has proved himself to be a skillful purveyor of body horror and I-dare-you-not-to-look-away extremity. And now, with “Humane,” the 39-year-old Caitlin Cronenberg has directed her own first feature, a dark-as-midnight domestic thriller about how climate change, totalitarianism, and euthanasia all go together. The movie, which takes the form of a dinner party from hell, is Caitlin Cronenberg’s own thing, but it’s all about crimes of the future.
Few real-world topics are more urgent than climate change, yet as dramatic feature-film material the meltdown of the planet has...

For the longest time, Caitlin Cronenberg wanted no part of the director’s chair. As a highly successful photographer who’s shot everyone and everything — including the much-publicized cover art for Drake’s fourth studio album, Views — she had no interest in following in the footsteps of her father, David Cronenberg, and older brother, Brandon Cronenberg. But everything started to change when Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy gave Caitlin a call about a low-pressure directing job that would ultimately whet her appetite en route to her feature directorial debut, Humane.
“It was very much thrust upon me by my friend Annie Murphy from Schitt’s Creek. She was doing a web series [The Plateaus] and needed a fake music video … and over the course of that process, I realized that directing felt very natural to me,” Cronenberg tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And when I did a short film called The Endings...

Science fiction has such flexibility and breadth as a genre that it should come to no surprise that so many popular sci-fi movies get released worldwide year after year. With so many sci-fi projects crowding the cinema and various streaming services, it's easy to miss some hidden gems in the genre that don't enjoy the same publicized fanfare. This oversight affects even the most critically acclaimed sci-fi movies which, despite the buzz, don't always get the general audience awareness they truly deserve.
From indie darlings to foreign films that don't receive major attention during their international distribution, there are plenty of overlooked sci-fi movies. For the purposes of this list, we've narrowed it down to movies that have scored exceptionally high with critics' scores on Rotten Tomatoes, but don't seem to have the wider viewership or recognition, even among sci-fi fans. The daughter of an iconic horror filmmaker making a thriller about a father sacrificing himself? Just don’t call it meta.
Caitlin Cronenberg’s directorial feature debut “Humane” is a family thriller starring Peter Gallagher as a patriarch whose suicide plan goes haywire, leaving his children (Jay Baruchel and Emily Hampshire) to fight for their own survival. Cronenberg is the daughter of body horror auteur David Cronenberg; her brother Brandon Cronenberg helmed “Possessor” and buzzy thriller “Infinity Pool.”
“Humane” takes place over the course of a single day, set months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population, per the official synopsis. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program. But when the father’s plan goes horribly awry,...

Writer-director Brandon Cronenberg proves a proper chip off the old block with his second feature, Possessor, a brilliantly directed and startlingly original sci-fi horror that’s worthy of instant classic status. In fact, it’s fully deserving of a place alongside his father’s very best films, it’s that good.
Opening with an immediately unsettling stabbing sequence, the film centres on Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough), a seasoned assassin who’s able to “possess” unsuspecting strangers and use their bodies to commit murder-for-hire, thanks to brain-implant technology developed by her employers. However, repeated exposure to the procedure has taken a cumulative psychological toll on Vos and she’s beginning to have trouble separating her own psyche from that of her unsuspecting hosts after a job.

Welcome to the digital den of dread, where horror meets headsets in a mind-melting mashup! In the wake of The Invisible Man back in 2020, Leigh Whannell is reteaming with Universal and Blumhouse to direct a new take on the Wolf Man, THR officially reports today.
Christopher Abbott (Poor Things) has been cast in the titular role. As you may recall, Ryan Gosling had previously been attached, with Derek Cianfrance on board to direct.
The Hollywood Reporter notes this afternoon, “Gosling and Cianfrance have both departed the project although Gosling will now receive an executive producer credit.”
Whannell’s Wolf Man will howl its way into theaters on October 25, 2024. It’s interesting to note that Whannell was the original director on the project, before Cianfrance took over.

Christopher Abbott Replacing Ryan Gosling to Star in ‘Wolf Man’ for Blumhouse, Universal (Exclusive)
Wolf Man has taken a new form.
Christopher Abbott, currently on screens with award season darling Poor Things, will star in Blumhouse and Universal Pictures’ werewolf thriller that is being directed by Invisible Man filmmaker Leigh Whannell.
Additionally, the companies have set an Oct. 25, 2024 release date for the feature, meaning the project is now moving faster than a speeding silver bullet.
That’s a hair-raising development for the thriller, which for the past three-plus years had Ryan Gosling on board to star. And it marks a return to the Wolf Man director’s chair for Whannell, who was initially on board the creature feature but moved aside in 2021, with Gosling’s Place Beyond the Pines and Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance parachuting in.

Three films into his feature film career, Brandon Cronenberg has established himself as an innovative and confronting auteur in his own right. When he debuted his 2012 feature debut Antiviral, however, the quality of the film was a secondary topic; first and foremost he was compared to his famous father, David Cronenberg.
There’s a obvious level of cynicism involved whenever a celebrity’s child enters the same field (let’s all agree to bury the term “nepo baby” and move on with our lives). But in the case of Cronenberg junior, there’s an interesting argument to be made about how his father’s work influenced Brandon’s creative approach, and where he’s established himself in his own right.

I’ve watched enough Doctor Who to know time is a complicated construct with rules fluctuating from one interpretation to the next. Thankfully, Rhys Darby’s Casper has time travel all figured out in Relax, I’m From the Future, a new time-traveling comedy that finally breaks the multiversal merry-go-round we’ve been riding for the past few years. In today’s exclusive Relax, I’m From the Future clip, Casper dismisses the Butterfly Effect and misinformation about multiple realities.
The scene finds Casper and Holly (Gabrielle Graham) discussing multiversal misnomers in a dimly lit diner over piping hot mugs of jitter juice. Casper explains how there’s only one reality, and that time is more like a mushy blob than anything we’ve seen in movies. Doc Brown lied to us, folks! Oh, the humanity! While branching paths in the timeline exist, they eventually converge in the same direction, leading toward a pre-determined future.

When he’s not pining for Blackbeard’s embrace on Our Flag Means Death or reprimanding werewolves for using foul language, Rhys Darby fights for the future of humankind! Blue Fox Entertainment‘s Relax, I’m From The Future trailer is here to tickle your ribs after the long Labor Day weekend. The sci-fi comedy hails from Luke Higginson for his feature directorial debut. In addition to operating the camera, Higginson wrote the screenplay and edited the film inspired by his short film of the same name that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 10 years ago.
In the Relax, I’m From The Future trailer, Darby stars as Casper, a time traveler trapped in the past who befriends Holly (Gabrielle Graham), a jaded drifter. They exploit his knowledge of the future, oblivious to the consequences they have set in motion, while a more competent time traveler, Doris (Janine Theriault), tries to stop them.

Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn, a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. With Antiviral, Possessor and Infinity Pool, filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg has expeditiously carved out a distinct, experimental aesthetic for his work. However, he has followed in the footsteps of his legendary father David in one respect—forging a lasting alliance with his cinematographer. All but three of the elder Cronenberg’s 20 features films were shot by either Mark Irwin or Peter Suschitzky. All of Brandon’s efforts thus far bear the name of Canadian Dp Karim Hussain. Hussain begin writing, directing and shooting low budget genre films while still a teenager, before eventually opting to focus solely on the latter of those roles. He […]

Christopher Abbott has quietly become one of the more respected actors on the indie-film scene, and his latest film, Sanctuary, is yet another example why.
Written by Micah Bloomberg and directed by Zachary Wigon, Sanctuary certainly has the trappings of a contained psychological thriller, but it’s ultimately a twisted romcom about power dynamics, starring Abbott and Margaret Qualley. Abbott plays Hal Porterfield, a hotel heir who decides to end his relationship with Rebecca (Qualley), a Denver dominatrix, now that he’s taking the reins of his family’s company. However, Rebecca doesn’t react well to the news or the severance package being offered, given her role in Hal’s success.
Abbott’s characters are often put through the wringer, physically and psychologically, and the Connecticut native also isn’t afraid of humiliation on screen, something Sanctuary reaffirms when Hal is asked by Rebecca to scrub the bathroom floor in his underwear.

It's only February, but Infinity Pool is already a key contender for 2023's wildest horror. Empire asks director Brandon Cronenberg why he makes such unhinged cinema.
Read an extract from our exclusive Infinity Pool feature from our April 2023 issue below, or read the full article here.
Faces peeling away from skulls. A syringe containing a deadly virus piercing the skin. A man vomiting blood livestreamed across the world. Few filmmakers have burst onto the big screen with such strange and agitating creations as Brandon Cronenberg.
The first mental challenge for audiences came in the form of his body-horror debut Antiviral (2012), in which celebrities’ illnesses are sold to rabid fans. In his second film, 2020’s Possessor, an assassin takes control of other people’s bodies via brain implants before encouraging suicide. But the horror, lust and disquieting feeling that envelops you watching those has nothing on the nightmarish new sci-fi Infinity Pool.

As much as he is indebted to his father, David Cronenberg's legacy as one of cinema's most beloved horror directors, Brandon Cronenberg has still managed to forge a path as a sleek and stylish modern provocateur in his own right. His newest outing, "Infinity Pool" has pretty much everything you're looking for from the Cronenberg name — it's a sexy, bloody, and debaucherous satire of the upper class and their nihilistic amount of apathy.
Set in an idyllic resort in the fictional country of Li Tolqua, "Infinity Pool" follows a novelist named James Foster (Alexander Skarsgård) and his wealthy wife Em (Cleopatra Coleman) who are on vacation searching for inspiration. They are soon joined by Gabi (Mia Goth), an aspiring actress (who coincidentally is a huge fan of James's only published novel), and her husband, Alban (Jalil Lespert). Infinity Pool is a movie written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg starring Alexander Skarsgård, Mia Goth and Cleopatra Coleman.
You may hate it or love it, but this movie was created from an extreme and risky gamble.
Knowing where this director comes from and feeds on a tradition of risks… everything is under control.
This is a movie that knows how to penétrate into the most fascinating morbidity and fall into the excesses of grotesqueness.
Storyline
Some tourists are on vacation in an island paradise called Tolga (fictitious). They meet another couple, and accidentally run over a native of the island, which sends them into an inner nightmare.

"Possessor" is a mind-bending, face-melting thriller about the very thin line between the human body and brain. The film, which centers on an assassin who enters other people's consciousnesses in order to carry out her missions, features plenty of trippy imagery as a psychological battle rages between the titular possessor and the possessed. True to the Cronenberg name, this includes bodily distortions ranging from the surreal to the gnarly and everything in between. The film's producers, however, were particularly uncomfortable with one effect that highlights the morphing of the psyches by giving lead assassin Tasya Vos a penis. The scene remained because both Brandon Cronenberg and Andrea Riseborough, who played Vos, thought of the idea without even telling each other.
The uncut version of "Possessor," which is now the release that's most commonly available for viewing, features more violence and gore than in its theatrical run. It was an issue with nudity,...

Brandon Cronenberg shows no fear returning to images and themes popularized by his father David. Even the literary influences apparent in his work––Phillip K. Dick, Jorge Luis Borges, J. G. Ballard––are close. Yet his third feature, Infinity Pool, makes much clearer what his own voice looks like: a genuinely provocative fantasy of male masochism as a response to guilt. Set in a luxurious resort in the imaginary country of Li Tolqa, it follows novelist failson James Forster (Alexander Skarsgård) on a dizzying trip with his wife Em (Cleopatra Coleman). After having dinner with fellow tourists Gabi and her husband Alban (Jalil Lespert), she gives him a hand job. Driving the quartet home, James kills a local farmer in a car accident. When he’s arrested the following day, Infinity Pool takes a strange leap: the culture of Li Tolqa allows guilty criminals to create clones to be executed in their place.

Eight years after his debut feature "Antiviral," Brandon Cronenberg made the provocative sci-fi body horror, "Possessor," which pushed the envelope when it came to exploring the relationship between the mind and the body. Brilliant and subversive, "Possessor" explores an alternate timeline in which the virtual takeover of bodies is possible — a technique used by assassin Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough) to carry out her hits. However, when Vos' consciousness enters Colin Tate (Christopher Abbott), the latter's psyche fights back to regain control of his body, leaving Vos reeling with the after-effects of a fragmented mind and the steady erosion of identity.
Instances of violence in "Possessor" are aplenty. For starters, there is the psychological violence of robbing another human of their autonomy, where the body is forced to revolt against itself. While target elimination is Vos' end goal, she navigates her missions with the aid of physical brute force. As a result,...

Infinity Pool is the third feature film from writer-director Brandon Cronenberg, whose previous efforts include 2012’s Antiviral and 2020’s Possessor. Yes, in case you didn’t know already, he is the son of legendary filmmaker David Cronenberg, and yes, both work in horror and sci-fi and do share some stylistic and thematic similarities. But the younger Cronenberg is very much establishing his own aesthetic as he moves forward, with Infinity Pool being the latest evidence of his own uniquely personal exploration of realities just adjacent to ours that are full of dread, psychological dysfunction, and bodily torment.
The film follows a couple named James (Alexander Skarsgård) and Em (Cleopatra Coleman) who are vacationing at a pristine, secluded, and extremely expensive resort that happens to be part of a totalitarian island nation. The first time I witnessed Brandon Cronenberg’s work, I was stunned. Certainly, you could compare the filmmaker to his famous father. And yet, Brandon has added an incredible voice to his own features. From Antiviral to Possessor, he beautifully examines violence and character (read our review of the Nc-17 cut here). Infinity Pool is yet another incredible work from the writer/director. Cronenberg’s latest is an eye-popping feature featuring excellent performances from Alexander Skarsgård, Mia Goth, Cleopatra Coleman, and Thomas Kretschmann. If you have the opportunity, try and check out this daring film as soon as possible. And if you can see it “uncut,” I highly recommend you do. It’s an insane shocker, folks.
We recently sat down with the two talented stars of the film, Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth. It’s always wonderful to speak with Mia, who should be getting more awards for her show-stopping work in Pearl.

Christina Ricci is abuzz with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revisiting Oscar campaigns following “To Leslie” star Andrea Riseborough’s surprise Best Actress nomination.
“Yellowjackets” and “Wednesday” star Ricci wrote on Instagram that Riseborough’s “legitimately brilliant performance” is being undermined by an “elitist” investigation.
“Seems hilarious that the ‘surprise nomination’ (meaning tons of money wasn’t spent to position this actress) of a legitimately brilliant performance is being met with an investigation,” Ricci wrote (via The Independent). “So it’s only the films and actors that can afford the campaigns that deserve recognition? Feels elitist and exclusive and frankly very backward to me.”
Ricci noted that Riseborough’s Oscar nomination “will be tainted by this” investigation, and added that she has “nothing to do with the campaigning” by speaking out.
“If it’s taken away, shame on them,” Ricci said of the possibility that Riseborough’s nomination could be rescinded.

Plot: A tourist (Alexander Skarsgard) visiting an unstable, totalitarian country accidentally kills someone in an auto accident. He’s sentenced to death but discovers that he can have a clone made to take his place for the right price. Soon, he falls in with a maniacal group of affluent tourists who’ve taken advantage of this fact to engage in wild acts of hedonism and violence.
Review: To say Infinity Pool is not for the faint of heart is an understatement. One could have said the same thing about director Brandon Cronenberg’s last movie, Possessor, but the extreme violence and sex on display here go beyond anything shown in that film. Those who catch it in theaters when it opens this week may not understand why the film is so controversial, but that’s because those audiences will be seeing a censored, R-rated cut. The version we got at Sundance,...

Infinity Pool, the out-there horror movie from director Brandon Cronenberg, was one of the talks of the Sundance Film Festival. With its eye-popping and blood-gushing violence and hallucinatory orgies, the movie had audiences rubbing their eyes in disbelief. What did they just see?
The movie stars Alexander Skarsgard as an author trapped in a vacation from hell and horror queen Mia Goth as a sultry fan-turned-manipulator who pushes him over the edge, all set in a county that allows the rich to create clones that take brutal punishments for the rich’s crimes. The R-rated Infinity Pool is getting a theatrical release from Neon starting Friday. But the cut shown at Sundance was unrated, hence all of the talk out of the festival about the sex and violence.
The man behind it all is a shy and unassuming Canadian from Toronto, who happens to be the son of iconic filmmaker David Cronenberg.
