Is there anything the French don’t do well? If you’ve seen Benjamin Rocher’s sequel to the 2015 action-drama The Squad, I bet you’d agree it’s time we gave French action flicks, and rap music too, for that matter, a fair shot at wooing us. Steadily bolstered by the slapstick elements that add an extra dosage of warmth to the uniquely emotional narrative, The Squad: Home Run revives the adorably quirky cop Niels Cartier’s amusing shenanigans one more time. Here’s how Cartier’s bizarre hunt for his wife’s killers goes down in The Squad: Home Run.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens in the Film?
Don’t get me wrong; losing a loved one to a freak explosion is traumatizing. But it’s not an easy job to keep a straight face when the unabashedly trope-y narrative of The Squad: Home Run takes a wilted page...

A “Peacemaker” spinoff centered on Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller is in the works at HBO Max, according to an individual with knowledge of the project. Davis is in talks to reprise the role.
“Watchmen” writer Christal Henry will write and executive produce the series.
Davis previously told Nerd Report that she is ”fascinated by the character,” who serves the DC Universe in a similar capacity as Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Waller is described as “a former congressional aide and government agent who is often placed in charge of the Suicide Squad, a semi-secret government-run group of former super villains working in return for amnesty.”
“Peacemaker” is a continuation of the story that Gunn started telling in his 2021 DC film “The Suicide Squad,” which was his R-rated spin on various DC characters. With this HBO Max series – which Gunn wrote and largely directed – the...

This Peacemaker review contains spoilers.
Peacemaker Episode 8
Ever since Peacemaker first premiered on Jan. 13, there’s been an internet group effort to figure out where it stands among other superhero TV shows and Dceu projects in terms of quality. I certainly understand the impulse to rank things, having just eagerly participated in Den of Geek’s own ranking of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But when it comes to Peacemaker, I had little desire to participate in these conversations.
The show has been so novel and enjoyable thus far that it seemed counterproductive to hold it up against the likes of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Doom Patrol, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, or any other current or former DC property. Peacemaker is here. Let’s enjoy it now and think about it later. That impulse to not overanalyze Peacemaker’s position in the superhero canon comes crashing down for me...

John Cena's Peacemaker was easily one of the biggest pleasant surprises in "The Suicide Squad," at least for those of us who knew nothing about the character previously. The team of villains and antiheroes looking for redemption needed to be balanced out with at least one genuine bad guy, which was a role that Peacemaker went above and beyond to fill.
It was always a fascinating choice on director James Gunn's part to pick this specific character to lead his own spin-off series on HBO Max -- long before the rest of the world had even seen Peacemaker in action! -- but in this case,...

Before he teamed up with the Guardians of the Galaxy and (the) Suicide Squad, James Gunn was penning adventures of an altogether different supergroup: the Mystery Incorporated crew. Yes, Gunn wrote the screenplays for both 2002's live-action "Scooby-Doo" and the 2004 sequel "Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed."
While the second movie may not have been nearly as big a hit as its predecessor, it did earn one true-blue fan: Bill Murray. The comedy legend and Wes Anderson regular once expressed his undying admiration for "Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed" at a party, and Gunn recounted his very own personal "No one will ever believe you" moment with the superstar...

Fleabag star Sian Clifford and Sherlock actor Jonathan Aris are joining BBC and HBO fantasy series His Dark Materials.
The duo are joining as Agent Salmakia and Commander Roke, respectively, both ‘Gallivespian Spies’. In the Philip Pullman story, Gallivespians are tiny humanoids who evolved in their native universe’s earth.
In the books, Gallivespian Spies are described by Pullman thus: “He was striking to look at: he was no taller than Lord Asriel’s hand span, and as slender as a dragonfly, but the rest of Lord Asriel’s captains treated him with profound respect, for he was armed with a poisonous sting in the spurs on his heels. He and his kind, the Gallivespians, had few of the qualities of good spies except, of course, their exceptional smallness: they were so proud and touchy that they would never have remained inconspicuous if they had been of Lord Asriel’s size.

While the MCU may be the “standard” for comic book movie franchises, the DC Extended Universe — which began back in 2013 with “Man of Steel” — is in a lot of ways more interesting than what Marvel has going on. And that’s because the bad Dceu movies tend to be so bad they’re must-watch spectacles — and the best ones are better than anything Marvel has ever put out. So let’s rank ‘em!

Photo: ‘The Suicide Squad’ In 2016 the original ‘Suicide Squad’ was released in theaters worldwide to general distaste from almost everyone. The film was directed by David Ayer, famous for ‘End of Watch’, ‘Fury’, and ‘Training Day’. There is a resounding stylistic and thematic resonance to the vast majority of Ayer’s filmography - each entry is dark, gritty, based in reality, and hauntingly stark. One thing that is absolutely true about ‘Suicide Squad’ is that it would never be described as any of those adjectives. Okay, maybe I’d call it dark but it's a different kind of dark than ‘End of Watch’ where two police officers are struggling to survive in an LA shoot-out with Ak-47 wielding gang members. It is certainly a different kind of dark than ‘Fury’ where a tank operator finds himself alone in Nazi Germany with only his tank to aid him. And ‘Suicide Squad...

The film’s lack of availability on streaming, premium or otherwise, almost certainly played a factor in its early success. The question is how much. With a $28.4 million opening, the original comedy starring Ryan Reynolds has edged out the $26.2 million opening by Warner Bros.’ DC Comics hit “The Suicide Squad.”Like everything else at the box office, beating box office expectations has a variety of factors behind it, including the ongoing impact of Covid-19 on the theatrical market. Aside from the fact that “The Suicide Squad” was available on streaming at no extra charge, the expectations for each film were significantly different. “Squad” fell short of its projected $30 million debut despite some major advantages: the DC Comics label,...

While “The Suicide Squad” opened below box office expectations this weekend, with a $26.5 million debut in North American theaters, Warner Bros. faces a bigger problem: The studio’s 2021 films have all hit a box office ceiling. “Godzilla vs. Kong,” the first big tentpole to hit theaters in March as theaters reopened, remains the only 2021 film from Warner Bros. to reacd $100 million in domestic grosses at the box office. “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” which opened to $31 million, fell off sharply after its opening weekend last month and will not reach that mark. Now, “The Suicide Squad,” which fell short of its projected $30 million opening weekend, will also fall short of that milestone after Paramount’s “A Quiet Place — Part II,” Universal’s “F9” and Disney/Marvel’s “Black Widow” all reached it. “The Suicide Squad” was always going to be a wild card at the box office as an R-rated,...

Home viewing competition this week was stiff. It included the HBO Max same-day premiere of “The Suicide Squad” and ongoing availability of Disney’s “Black Widow” and “Jungle Cruise” for an extra $29.99 for Disney+ subscribers. The two titles that could break through were “Pig” (Neon/$6.99) and “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” (Focus/$19.99), both of which added VOD play after three weeks in theaters.
Many Nicolas Cage movies are genre-exercise VOD exclusives, but “Pig” stands out with excellent reviews (82 Metacritic) and his performance as a truffle hunter in search of his beloved pig received some the best reviews of his career. It placed on all three charts and as high as #2 on iTunes.
“Roadrunner,” released Friday, is #7 on iTunes. Vudu reports that though the title is just below its top 10, it was their third-highest ranked new release.
Samba TV, an app that tracks home viewing, estimates 2.8 million U.S. households saw “Squad” this weekend.

Spoiler Warning: Do not read if you have not seen “The Suicide Squad,” currently playing in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
For anyone familiar with James Gunn’s career, his DC comics adaptation “The Suicide Squad” is arguably the most James Gunn movie he’s ever made. Like his Marvel Studios’ films — 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” and 2017’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” — “The Suicide Squad” is a massive comic book spectacular, about scrappy crew of headstrong ne’er-do-wells who struggle, hilariously, to figure out how to work together as a team as they face off against a giant alien monster. Like Gunn’s earlier, smaller films — the 2006 R-rated horror comedy “Slither” and the 2010 R-rated costume vigilante dramedy “Super” — “The Suicide Squad” is exuberantly violent and profane, reveling in blood, gore, and nudity (male and female) that reflect its characters’ total lack of decorum or pretension.

James Gunn wrote the role of King Shark specifically for Sylvester Stallone, but as he explains it, he was afraid at first to approach Stallone about playing the part. The two worked together previously on “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.”
“I actually had hired three different actors. I wrote the role for Sylvester Stallone. I was afraid… Sly’s my friend. … What if it didn’t work? He’s Sly! “I would’ve just had to have a voice that didn’t work,” Gunn said at a promotional event attended by TheWrap in july.
So while Steve Agee, who also plays Belle Reve warden John Economos, did the King Shark motion capture on set, they tried to audition a ton of actors to get the voice right.
“So we had a huge audition process with tons of voice actors. We had one voice actor come in and do the whole movie.

The Suicide Squad might just be the best Dceu movie yet. Not only is it a sterling ensemble piece about the horrors of American imperialism but it’s also the world’s weirdest buddy comedy. And in a film full of stunning performances–Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian, and Daniela Melchior please stand up–we got another killer turn from Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
After kicking all kinds of ass in Birds of Prey, the Mistress of Mischief is back and better than ever. This is a truly emancipated Harley, one who hates the Joker, will kill an abusive man in a second, and who plays a huge part in saving the day after choking out a man with her thighs, of course.

The Dceu is alive and well and dividing its time between Corto Maltese and Belle Reve prison. James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad gives us the most DC characters in live action in any one movie ever assembled!
Ok, fine, the vast majority of them die. And a fair portion of them most folks have never even heard of. But it still counts!
And yes, there are DC Comics Easter eggs in the movie, but perhaps not as many as you might expect. So we’ve decided to split the difference. We’re gonna give you the lowdown on all the characters, especially the obscure ones, and talk about what their existence in this movie means (or could mean) for the wider Dceu. And we’ll still give you all the DC Easter eggs we were able to spot.

Arriving today in theaters and on HBO Max is James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, a follow-up to 2016’s Suicide Squad and also a reboot of the DC property for Warner Bros. Pictures.
If that sounds a little confusing, well, it is. The 2016 origin movie, directed by David Ayer (and subsequently recut by the studio), was a massive box office hit with $747 million worldwide in its coffers when all was said and done.
But critics and even fans were less positive, despite the movie being one of the Dceu’s most lucrative, so Warner Bros. abandoned plans for a direct sequel and eventually corralled Gunn — fresh off his then-dismissal (subsequently retracted) from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 — to write and direct a brand new iteration of Task Force X, a request that even Gunn found a little perplexing at first.

Five years ago, Will Smith uttered the instantly meme-able line, “So that’s it, huh, we’re the patsies, we’re some kind of Suicide Squad.” Yet by the end of that 2016 film, barely anyone in that squad was put six feet under. How times have changed.
For the entire rollout of his pseudo-sequel/reboot, writer-director James Gunn has insisted he had carte blanche to kill off any character in his The Suicide Squad roster. While we may remain skeptical if Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and a few others were really that expendable to Warner Bros., Gunn’s finished film speaks to just how much freedom he was allotted in slaughtering potentially valuable DC IP. Major characters from the first film, and a slew of new ones Gunn personally introduced, were pushing up daisies...

Well done! You’ve survived The Suicide Squad!
James Gunn’s stunning supervillain flick is a brutal ride through DC’s most deep cut characters and now you want to dig deep into what happened. So we’re here to break down that shocking ending, where we leave our heroes, and what’s next for the Suicide Squad in the Dceu. Well, those of them who survived, at least…
The standalone (sort of sequel) movie centers around the Suicide Squad on a top secret mission. So off they go to Corto Maltese.
We begin with two crews but only one actually survives the opening bloodbath. Those lucky few are led by Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and the crew consists of Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), Nanaue/King...

The Suicide Squad presented a particularly special challenge even for the guy who brought a talking raccoon and a sentient tree to life — and made us fall in love with them — in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Two of the characters that writer/director James Gunn wanted to feature in his soft reboot of the DC Extended Universe franchise — a follow-up to the Squad’s 2016 big screen introduction — were King Shark a.k.a. Nanaue (played on set by Steve Agee and voiced by Sylvester Stallone) and Starro the Conqueror.
The former is a man-eating hybrid of great white shark and human being, while the latter is a giant, intelligent alien life form in the shape of a starfish that has traveled through interstellar space to Earth and can control the minds of other beings through spores it wraps around its victims’ faces. King Shark was created through a combination of performance capture and digital effects,...

The Suicide Squad begins roughly how you’d expect. En route to the island nation of Corto Maltese, we’re introduced to the members of a revamped Task Force X, a motley crew of super(anti)heroes assembled for a covert mission at the behest of shady US intelligence agency Argus. These are new faces, but we recognise them all the same: there’s the cocksure wisecracker, the pretty boy, the taciturn senior figure – familiar guides to see us through another team-based superhero movie.

Even The Losers get lucky sometimes. Before the Dceu was formed to compete against the ever-expanding, cash cow that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the approach at Warner Bros. was far looser. With the booming business of comic book adaptations in full swing, the studio was throwing money at several eclectic comic book titles like Watchmen and Jonah Hex, trying to stay competitive and seemingly more adult than their rivals. Hence before leaving to create his own superhero project, Hancock, writer-director Peter Berg started penning an adaptation of DC/Vertigo’s The Losers, bringing in French director Sylvain White to helm the picture.
Produced by Joel Silver, The Losers centered on a team of elite, black-ops Special Forces operatives betrayed by their handler. Director White connected with the material immediately.
“What appealed to me about The Losers was that it wasn’t the typical superhero-with-superpowers thing,” White told MTV. “It...

For this writer, it has been really cool to see actor David Dastmalchian’s career take off ever since we saw him portray one of Joker’s henchmen in The Dark Knight. Since then, he’s appeared in the Ant-Man films and several of Denis Villeneuve’s previous projects (Prisoners and Blade Runner 2049), he’s co-starred in several television series, and genre fans should recognize Dastmalchian from his work in films like Sushi Girl and The Belko Experiment. David even thrilled horror fans everywhere with his portrayal of Dr. Fearless, his vampiric host of the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, earlier this year. And as if all of that wasn’t enough, Dastmalchian is celebrating his latest role in The Suicide Squad as well as his vocal work in both parts of Batman: The Long Halloween and Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune adaptation as well.

With the release of The Suicide Squad, our favorite squad of semivillainous misfits is back in action - but it's not quite clear how they're back. Is this a sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad, or a reboot that just happens to use the same actors? The answer is likely to be frustrating to fans particular about continuity: it's neither a reboot nor a sequel.
In 2019, Gizmodo visited the set of The Suicide Squad, where producer Peter Safran tried to explain the movie's vision. "[Director James Gunn's] ultimate reaction was, 'Ask Warner Bros. if I have to be bound by anything that has occurred before, any characters or anything off-base, or can I just start from scratch?'" Safran recalled. "And the reaction was, you know, 'We want Suicide Squad from the mind of James Gunn.' That's what it is. So it's not a sequel, it's not a reboot. It's James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

Five years after David Ayers’ “Suicide Squad” was met with lackluster reviews, “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn took another stab at the DC Comics story, using several of the same characters and lots of new faces in what’s not quite a reboot and not quite a sequel.
While the film doesn’t hit theaters until Aug. 6, the first batch of reviews are in, and they’re overwhelmingly positive.
Read some highlights of what critics are saying below:
Variety’s Owen Gleiberman:

It’s a team-of-scruffy-cutthroats origin story that feels honestly dunked in the grunge underworld, and shot for shot it’s made with a slicing ingenuity that honors the genre of ‘The Dirty Dozen’. Though the name of the game in blockbuster movie-making is consolidation and crossovers, there are still two universes that seem unlikely to ever combine.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe resides at Disney while DC Entertainment has its home at Warner Bros. Both franchises make bucketloads of money for their respective corporate overlords so there is little incentive for Disney and WB to combine forces and share the wealth. But in the spirit of Marvel’s latest Disney+ series: What if…there was a filmmaker, nay a hero, strong enough to make such a crossover happen?
James Gunn is one of the few creatives to have made a home in both Marvel and DC’s sandboxes. The writer-director scored his first major hit with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (followed up by Vol. 2 and the upcoming Vol. 3) and is now working with DC on their latest supervillain team-up effort The Suicide Squad.

Who are we most excited to see in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie by James Gunn? I think the most popular answer is King Shark. Who is this unusual character? Well, it’s honestly kind of sad that he’s not a household name, because he’s a very fun character. I have a feeling that casual comic book fans may not be too familiar with this character, but in recent years, he’s been mostly affiliated with the Suicide Squad. That does explain his inclusion in the upcoming movie, but let’s be honest, he’s clearly the elephant (in this case shark) in the
