Benedict Cumberbatch’s new six-part series that follows a desperate father in search of his missing son is now dominating Netflix’s global chart, topping even the hyped third season of Bridgerton. It proves people’s never-ending interest in chilling crime stories.

Just like Eric, it blends a dark mystery story, full of intrigue and deception, with deep psychological drama of the protagonist, who devotes himself entirely to searching for his closest person.

While Netflix has expanded the type of programming it offers, most recently venturing into live sports and other events, co-ceo Ted Sarandos has indicated in a new interview that news is not for Netflix.
“We don’t do breaking news and that kind of thing, because I think there’s a lot of other outlets for it. People aren’t looking to us for that,” Sarandos told The New York Times in a wide-ranging interview that ran online Saturday when asked what’s not right for Netflix. Yet the executive — whose company a year ago launched an ad tier — in the same answer said he’s open to new things: “I don’t think that there’s a clean answer because the best version of something may work really well for Netflix but just hasn’t worked to date.”

Netflix, which for years had claimed that live sports did not factor into its business model, is now a major player in the field, recently snapping up Christmas NFL games. But before committing to established, conventional sports franchises like NFL football games and WWE Raw, the streamer tested the waters with stunt-y, made-for-tv sport events, starting with The Netflix Cup on Nov. 14, 2023.
According to Netflix’s second expansive viewership report released today, The Netflix Cup, a golf match featuring drivers and golfers from its docu series Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing, logged paltry 700,000 views in the second half of 2023.

Remember when HBO licensed those originals to Netflix last year?
Well, it’s finally time to see if the move paid off for Netflix, as the streamer just released another round of data that encapsulates all viewing on the platform from July to December 2023. That includes shows like Insecure, Band of Brothers, The Pacific and the rest of the HBO originals that landed on Netflix last July.
So, how did they do?
It looks like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was the star of the show, as Ballers tallied 33.5M views across all five seasons — by far the highest of the bunch. Season 1 came in No. 139 on the overall list with just under 11M views alone. Considering the list includes thousands of titles, that’s pretty good.

Constantin Film and Big Light Productions has tapped Christian Schwochow, whose credits include “The Crown,” “Munich: The Edge of War” and “Bad Banks,” to direct its upcoming high-profile drama series “Nuremberg,” based on the Nuremberg Trials. The show will be written by Frank Spotnitz, whose credits include “The Man in the High Castle,” “Ransom” and “Leonardo.”
The series follows young survivors of World War II who go to work for Allied prosecutors trying Nazi criminals in Nuremberg, only to find their quest for justice undermined by secret efforts to build a new world order based on power, not principle.
Schwochow said: “The Nuremberg Trials marked a pivotal moment in human history, ushering in a new age of responsibility and justice. This is a story of humanity grappling with its deepest shadows. Its relevance has never been greater, and I am filled with a humble sense of duty to tell this story faithfully.

“Beckham” has officially been defeated — the Netflix miniseries, not the soccer star. “The Fall of the House of Usher” moved from second place to first on Netflix’s Top 10 English-language TV list Tuesday.
This shift comes a week ahead of Halloween, fitting for the spooky miniseries based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe. The series from Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy secured 7.9 million views in its second week. With those numbers, it beat out last week’s reigning champion “Beckham,” which secured 6.9 million views.
Also on the English-language Top 10 list were the U.K. limited series “Bodies” in the No. 3 spot with 5.5 million views, the fantasy series “I Woke Up a Vampire” in the No. 4 spot with 3.4 million views and Season 4 of the comedy “Sex Education” in the No.

After a week in second place, Suits returned to the top of the streaming charts, extending its record run as the No. 1 overall title in Nielsen’s weekly rankings. Suits drew 1.79 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Peacock in the United States for the week of Sept. 18-24 — marking its 13th week as the overall No. 1 in the rankings and extending its own record. In the 14 weeks since it first made the rankings, the legal drama has racked up 40.55 billion minutes of viewing — more than 9 billion minutes more than the second-place show for 2023, Bluey on Disney+ (the kids’ favorite had 856 million minutes of viewing for the week).

Suits‘ three-month stranglehold on the top of the Nielsen streaming charts has come to an end.
Netflix’s Virgin River moved ahead of Suits and claimed the No. 1 overall spot for the week of Sept. 11-17. The drama, whose fifth season premiered Sept. 7, improved by 7 percent from the previous week with 2.05 billion minutes of viewing. Suits, meanwhile, slipped by 19.5 percent to a still very strong 1.9 billion minutes and was second overall. The former USA Network series had spent the previous 12 weeks at No. 1.
The Morning Show became the third Apple TV+ series (after Ted Lasso and Hijack) to make the streaming rankings. It finished eighth among original series for the week of its season three premiere with 350 million minutes of viewing. Netflix’s German thriller Dear Child moved up to second among originals with 720 million minutes.
On the movie charts, Elemental scored a big streaming debut on Disney+ with 1.73 billion minutes of viewing.

After 12 weeks on top, “Suits” has finally fallen — but not too far.
The USA Network procedural has concluded a summer-long reign as the most-watched streaming title, which began when Netflix acquired it in June — though Peacock had already been streaming the series. With a still-whopping 1.9 billion watched, “Suits” took second place on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings for Sept. 11-17.
Now, “Virgin River” sits in the spot that belonged to “Suits” for so long. The Netflix drama was watched for 2.1 billion minutes during this viewing window, the first full week of availability for Season 5 Part 1. This marks a jump from last week, when the series landed at No. 2 with 1.9 billion minutes.
With 1.7 billion minutes watched, the No. 3 spot went to “Elemental,” the Pixar film that hit theaters in June and debuted on Disney+ during this viewing window with five days to spare. It was followed by “Bluey,” another children’s title.

Suits finally fell from grace.
For the first time in 12 weeks (and after breaking another record the week before), the USA Network legal drama was bumped from its top spot on the Nielsen streaming charts from September 11-17.
Don’t get it twisted, Suits still racked up 1.9 billion viewing minutes and took second place during this interval across Netflix and Peacock — which is icing on the cake for NBCUniversal, as the studio now appears to be eyeing an expansion of the Suits universe — but it was heavyweight Virgin River that came out on top.
The Netflix original hit the Nielsen charts last week at No. 2, following the debut of Season 5. With a full week of availability on the streaming platform, the latest installment helped boost Virgin River to an impressive 2.1 billion minutes viewed.
That, of course, is across all 52 episodes, since Nielsen doesn’t differentiate its viewing metrics by season.

It’s big news then when Netflix isn’t No. 1 and a competitor occupies the top two spots, which is the case for the week of Sept. 18-24, with Disney+ sitting atop the charts.

I like how, at some point, we all collectively agreed that spooky season starts in September. Without even glancing at the calendar, I suddenly feel an urge to start watching horror films and TV shows the moment August ends. Even Hollywood has cottoned onto this recently, with films like "The Nun II" and "A Haunting in Venice" getting a head start on this year's competition before theaters and streaming services are flooded with horror flicks and supernatural thrillers. Well, that and "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," but who isn't a little scared of the Mastermind herself?
If you're eager to get a head-start on Netflix's annual Halloween lineup (which is called "Netflix & Chills" because no company knows how to be hip like the "youths" quite like Netflix), you might want to check out the German-language series "Dear Child" (the original German title is "Liebes Kind").
