How do the makers of Bridgerton keep a fandom as dedicated as theirs guessing? How does the Netflix show surprise a core of fans who are so intimately familiar with Julia Quinn’s source books that they’re anticipating every blush and ball before it even gets to the screen?
One solution, as has happened in season three, is to play with the established order of things. Though Benedict Bridgerton’s romance follows on from that of his brother Anthony’s in Quinn’s book series, the TV show has (rightly!) vaulted over that to first show the love story between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington.
Their other answer? Invention. In addition to TV-only characters Madame Delacroix, Will and Alice Mondrich and Queen Charlotte herself, a new raft of invented-for-the-show characters appear in season three. Here they all are, along with info on the actors playing them, plus a couple...

Prime Video’s latest sensation, the Fallout TV show sparked a new interest to the iconic video game franchise in millions of people who haven’t even heard about it previously — and launched quite a few careers sky-high. One of the show’s lead stars, Ella Purnell (Lucy MacLean) found herself under the spotlight thanks to it…
Except that in 2014, the young actress was already working with Angelina Jolie.
Ella Purnell Starred in Maleficent
You read it right: the Fallout lead star did a movie with Angelina Jolie back in the day, and not just any movie. 2014’s Maleficent, one of Jolie’s last movies before she effectively quit acting, saw Ella Purnell play the same character as the former queen of Hollywood — Purnell starred in it as the younger version of Maleficent herself.

Elle Fanning is best known for portraying Sleeping Beauty in the 2014 film Maleficent and its 2019 sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. So, I am unsurprised that she chose to channel her iconic character, Aurora, on the red carpet at the 2024 Met Gala.
On Monday, May 6, Elle Fanning was among the many celebrities who attended the event, which raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and celebrates the Costume Institute’s annual exhibits.

The dress code for the night was “The Garden of Time,” inspired by the art museum’s new exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” And I think the 26-year-old American actress captured the theme flawlessly, exuding romance and fantasy with her attire.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a movie that makes more than $1.6 billion at the box office is probably going to get another franchise entry greenlit very, very quickly. Such is the case with the 2019 "live-action" remake of "The Lion King," which didn't leave much of a pop culture imprint, but certainly had an impact on Disney's quarterly earnings report. Thus, this year will see the release of the prequel movie "Mufasa: The Lion King," which just dropped its first trailer during "Good Morning America."
As the title suggests, "Mufasa" is the story of Simba's father becoming king of the lions, despite being born "without a drop of nobility in his blood." The film was directed by Barry Jenkins, who joked at CinemaCon that this "eight-quadrant tentpole" is quite different from the types of films he's known for, but said that its story was "very personal" to him. Billy Eichner...

Since MCU’s Eternals, Angelina Jolie has remained out of the public spotlight until recently, as she joined her youngest daughter at the red carpet premiere of her Broadway show. Vivienne, 15, whom she shares with ex-husband Brad Pitt, known for starring alongside her mother in 2014’s Maleficent, joined forces with Jolie in the new stage adaptation of S. E. The Oscar winner recalled that Vivienne, who worked as an assistant on the stage adaptation, was pretty committed to her job, and didn’t shy away from schooling Jolie on several instances.

Daisy Ridley stars as Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel, in Disney’s Young Woman and the Sea. The official trailer for the inspirational drama shows a determined Trudy ready to face the elements (and jellyfish) despite the incredible danger.
The cast also includes Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Kim Bodnia, Christopher Eccleston, and Glenn Fleshler. Jeff Nathanson adapted Glenn Stout’s Young Woman and the Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World and Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) directed.
“Daisy Ridley stars as the accomplished swimmer who was born to immigrant parents in New York City in 1905,” reads Disney’s synopsis. “Through the steadfast support of her older sister and supportive trainers, she overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the staggering achievement – a 21-mile trek from France to England.

Kim Kardashian and Emma Roberts lock lips in chilling American Horror Story: Delicate Part 2 trailer
If we’re being honest, we didn’t think Kim Kardashian was the right fit for American Horror Story before the season debuted.
But she exceeded all expectations last fall when she appeared as a publicist named Siobhan on American Horror Story: Delicate.

In a new trailer released Wednesday, Kardashian’s character becomes more chilling than anticipated.
Even though Siobhan is embracing her villainous side, she’s still throwing out witty one-liners to poor Anna (Emma Roberts), who has become the target of a cult with big plans for her unborn child.
The trailer delves into what we can expect during the final episodes of the season, and one moment that’s sure to get fans talking involves Kardashian and Roberts kissing.

They were all young once: Don Corleone and Darth Vader, Butch and Sundance, Hannibal and Leatherface, Maleficent and Cruella. And long before he was the world’s best-known chocolatier and distributor of life-changing golden tickets, William “Willy” Wonka was just a twentysomething kid with a top hat, a sweet tooth, and a dream.

Angelina Jolie was perfectly cast as the deliciously evil Maleficent for Disney’s live action movie back in 2014, which put the focus entirely on the iconic Disney villain and managed to find a way to make her a sympathetic character. The film was a massive box office hit in 2014, making nearly $800 million worldwide and spawning a sequel just a handful of years later.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil continued the story of Jolie’s Maleficent in 2019, though that film ended its worldwide box office run with just under $500 million. The sequel’s production budget was nearly $200 million, so Disney no doubt expected the film to make more in theaters. Nevertheless, it looks like we’re still getting a Maleficent 3 at some point soon.
A new profile that The Wall Street Journal wrote up on Angelina Jolie this week confirms that Jolie is currently attached to star in a third movie in the Maleficent franchise.

Angelina Jolie has shared that she probably wouldn’t be an actress if she was just starting in the entertainment industry in this day and age.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, published online Tuesday, the Maleficent star said she may have considered acting on the stage but not Hollywood.
“I wouldn’t be an actress today,” Jolie explained. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”
Though she doesn’t read anything about herself in the press, the actress knows she’s “just been around so long, and there’s been everything said.”
Jolie grew up around Hollywood since both her parents, Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand, were actors. Having appeared in projects from a young age, as well as modeling and studying Method acting, Jolie admitted that she “was never very impressed with it [Hollywood],” adding,...

Angelina Jolie told the Wall Street Journal Magazine that she probably would not become an actor if she was just starting out in the industry in 2023. She’d consider acting on the stage, perhaps, but certainly not a life and career in Hollywood.
“I wouldn’t be an actress today,” the Oscar-winner said. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”
Being under intense public scrutiny for well over two decades has seemingly taken its toll on Jolie, who found herself even more of a tabloid target after she divorced Brad Pitt seven years ago. The stress got so bad that she noticed in 2018, during the filming of her Disney sequel “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” that her voice had changed registers from when she first played the fairy tale villain.

This post contains spoilers for "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes."
"The Hunger Games" prequel story "The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" flips the perspective of the original trilogy, this time looking outwards at the districts of Panem from the viewpoint of the Capitol. Specifically, it's the story of the future president and over-arching villain of "The Hunger Games," Coriolanus Snow -- with Tom Blyth playing an 18-year-old version of the character portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the previous films.
Though President Snow was at the very height of the Capitol's privileged elite, "The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" reveals that Coriolanus is no stronger to hard times. In the film's opening sequence, set during the Rebellion, a five-year-old Coriolanus is scrounging for scraps of food in the street when he witnesses a starving neighbor cannibalizing a dead body to stay alive. And even a decade after the Capitol retakes control,...

Spoiler Alert: The following review contains mild spoilers.
Amusing ourselves to death. That’s what media critic Neil Postman called the phenomenon that “The Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins took to its natural extreme, penning a dystopian YA trilogy whose four-film adaptation minted Lionsgate nearly $3 billion at the global box office. Much like “Harry Potter,” the book series whose Hollywood success made this franchise possible, the big-screen adaptations took a few false steps before hitting their stride with a single director — in this case, Francis Lawrence — who now returns to helm a prequel (far better than the “Fantastic Beasts” movies) that impressively expands the canon while honoring its key themes.
“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” feels like a natural extension of the saga, balancing blood sport, endangered young love and a heightened level of political commentary that respects the intelligence of young audiences as only Collins can.

20th Century Studios deserves recognition for listening to fan demand, as not only has Prey received a physical media release — virtually unheard of for a Hulu original — but it’s an impressive one. Not only does it carry exclusive extras, but there are 4K Uhd and Steelbook options to boot. (Hopefully we can convince them to do Hellraiser next!)
An audio commentary with writer-director Dan Trachtenberg, star Amber Midthunder, director of photography Jeff Cutter, and editor Angela M. Catanzaro is included alongside a making-of featurette, a FYC panel with cast and crew, and more.
Here are eight things I learned from the Prey commentary…
1. The Predator originally infiltrated the 20th Century Studios logo.
The 20th Century Studios opening title card originally featured Predator’s laser target and the logo went invisible like the creature’s cloaking mechanism as the fanfare dropped out.

Angelina Jolie has shared that she intentionally began taking on fewer roles in films in recent years.
In her recent Vogue cover story about her new fashion house, Atelier Jolie, the Oscar-winning actress opened up about her current phase in life and said she’s “still understanding who I am at 48.”
“I guess I’m in transition as a person,” she said. “I feel a bit down these days. I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade, in a way, which I don’t want to get into.”
As Jolie works to figure out what’s most important to her and where she wants to focus her energy, she said Atelier Jolie has played a huge part. She revealed that’s especially true since she made the decision to start working on fewer movies about seven years ago and “only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.

Angelina Jolie told Vogue magazine that she started doing less film work “seven years ago, only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.” Why? “We had a lot of healing to do. We’re still finding our footing,” she said. The Oscar winner did not go into specifics, but the timeline of Jolie’s film hiatus coincides with the end of her marriage to Brad Pitt. She filed for divorce seven years ago in September 2016 after an alleged physical altercation with Pitt took place on a plane.
Jolie said that she feels a “bit down these days,” before revealing: “I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade, in a way. Which I don’t want to get into.”
After leading Disney’s successful tentpole “Maleficent” in 2014 and directing and co-starring opposite Pitt in the 2015 flop “By the Sea,” Jolie’s film output took a significant pause.

Angelina Jolie once played a huge part in adapting the popular Tomb Raider games to the big screen. But when it was time to take the movies in a new direction, it was believed that Jolie aged out of the role.

“The Crown” will hope to build on its status as an Emmys force to be reckoned with its fifth season, which takes proceedings into the 1990s.
The latest edition of the acclaimed Netflix features Imelda Staunton taking over the role of Queen Elizabeth while Elizabeth Debicki plays Princess Diana and Dominic West features as Prince Charles. Some of the major events depicted include the Queen’s “annus horribilis,” the public divorce of Diana and Charles, and the former’s “Panorama” interview. Meanwhile, Lesley Manville takes over the role of Princess Margaret from Helena Bonham-Carter, who, in turn, took the role from Vanessa Kirby.
And, in that role, Manville is quietly one of the very best things about this season. While Kirby and Bonham-Carter could be more playful in their depictions of Margaret, Manville has to be more restrained. Her Manville has settled into her role in the Royal Family and...

Elle Fanning opened up about the time she failed to get a part at age just 16 because she was “unf**kable.”
Fanning chatted to The Hollywood Reporter alongside numerous other actresses as part of the publication’s annual Comedy Actress Emmy Roundtable.
She admitted while talking about growing up in the public eye, “I’ve never told this story, but I was trying out for a movie. I didn’t get it. I don’t even think they ever made it, but it was a father-daughter road trip comedy.
“I didn’t hear from my agents because they wouldn’t tell me things like this — that filtration system is really important because there’s probably a lot more damaging comments that they filtered — but this one got to me. I was 16 years old, and a person said, ‘Oh, she didn’t get the father-daughter road trip comedy because she’s unf**kable.

Two of the most enigmatic actresses of our time, Elle Fanning and Sarah Paulson, will lead Mirrah Foulkes’ new film project, I Am Sybil. Foulkes directs from a script she co-wrote with Jen Silverman, recreating the true story of Sybil, one of the first widely recognized cases of dissociative identity disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder).
Sybil was the name given to Shirley Mason, who, in a study conducted by Flora Rheta Schreiber, examined Mason’s treatment for Mpd by psychologist Connie Wilbur. The forthcoming film draws inspiration from Debbie Nathan‘s 2011 novel Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case, examining flaws in Schreiber’s findings.
We don’t know who Fanning and Paulson play in Foulkes’ film project, but sources say Fanning plays Mason while Paulson plays Wilbur. I Am Sybil is not the first cinematic retelling of Mason’s story. Sally Field and Joanne Woodward...

When Bob Iger took over Walt Disney again, one of his first moves was to reassure Wall Street that more sequels and remakes were coming. Disney has a lot in its vault, and remaking animated classics as live-action movies is widely seen as a safe strategy, with built-in audiences for familiar fare.
That strategy is coming into question, though, as weak international box office numbers for “The Little Mermaid” trickle in. The live-action remake of the 1989 film grossed $95 million in its Friday-Sunday North American debut, but just $68 million overseas. For comparison, star power fueled the 2019 “Aladdin” remake with Will Smith and 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast” with Emma Watson, both of which earned more than $1 billion, mostly overseas.
What ties Disney’s recent remakes together is that they’re primarily based on movies from what’s called its “Renaissance” period — a range from the late 1980s to late 1990s when...

One of the most famous women in the world, Angelina Jolie, started acting right out of high school. Despite her outward appearance, she has described herself as an awkward outsider at Beverly Hills High School, where she was teased because by her rich classmates. She lived with her mother in an apartment, and the family existed only on child support from her father actor Jon Voight, who had financial problems of his own. She later transferred to a different school and found her identity as what she describes as “a punk chick with tattoos.”
She began her career in a series of forgettable films (“Cyborg 2” anyone?) but then suddenly grabbed attention in the TV mini-series “George Wallace.” The series depicted the life of the title character, who was a controversial governor of Alabama and a presidential candidate. Jolie received very positive reviews as his second wife, Cornelia. Later that same...

It’s kind of funny now, but there was a time when Walt Disney Animation Studios refused to even make a sequel to their classic works. Millennials of a certain age will of course recall the deluge of straight-to-video sequels released by the Mouse House in the 1990s and early 2000s, but those were never made by Wdas Proper, which for the whole of the 20th century almost always viewed every effort as a single work that should not be revisited.
How times change.
In the 21st century, Wdas has gotten with the program as the Walt Disney Company’s priorities have shifted from creating new characters to curating and maintaining the popularity of existing ones. It’s why we’re right now anticipating Frozen III and Zootopia 2. But that’s still demure when compared to the larger Walt Disney Pictures umbrella, which has been mining the animation vault for...

Disney’s return to live-action takes of their animated vault in the fullest theatrical form happens this weekend with Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid which is eyeing a $180M worldwide start.
The majority of that number will be made stateside with $120M for the four-day Memorial Day weekend holiday, and around $100M over three days. At $120M, Little Mermaid would be the fifth highest opening in U.S./Canada for the Friday-Monday Memorial Day weekend holiday. Pic’s overseas launch in such major markets, save Japan on June 9, begins today in France, Italy, Korea, Brazil, Germany, the UK, Spain and China joining in subsequent days. For those keeping track, Cruella was the last live-action adaptation of a Disney animated pic (she was the villain in 101 Dalmatians), however, it went day and date over Memorial Day weekend 2021 when theaters were just reopening for the summer from Covid.
