Despite being one of the longest-running live-action sitcoms of all time, you don't hear much about "My Three Sons" anymore. The series ran for an impressive 12 seasons beginning in 1960, producing 380 episodes of wholesome sitcom scenarios during a decade of tremendous upheaval. "The real world was quite tumultuous and revolution was in the air," star Barry Livingston told CBS News in a 2009 retrospective, "and we were still eating Uncle Charley's cookies and having milk."
"My Three Sons" doesn't have the enduring legacy of more thought-provoking shows of the '60s and '70s, like "M*A*S*H" and "The Twilight Zone," nor is it typically mentioned in the same breath as all-time-great comedies like "I Love Lucy" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Despite the show's absence from most abridged versions of TV history, though, it still connected with audiences in its time: the series about a widower raising three sons as a...

A24 has shared the first trailer for The Iron Claw, which stars Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, and Harris Dickinson as the Von Erich brothers.
Led by their father Fritz Van Erich, the Von Erich family dominated the professional wrestling sphere in the 1980s, especially in the World Class Championship Wrestling circuit of their home state of Texas. While Kerry (White), known as “The Modern Day Warrior” and “The Texas Tornado,” was probably the most well-known Von Erich, Kevin (Efron) and David (Dickinson) became circuit staples as well, known respectively as “The Golden Warrior” and “The Yellow Rose of Texas.”
Unfortunately, a series of tragedies struck the family, including the death of David from acute enteritis and the deaths of Kerry, as well as brothers Chris and Mike, from suicide. These incidents have led to the legend of the “Von Erich Curse.”

Oscar-nominated actor Paul Mescal’s hot streak continues this fall with “Foe,” a new sci-fi film in which he co-stars opposite Saoirse Ronan as one half of a somewhat unhappily married couple who gets the chance to leave his life behind and live in space.
Based on the book of the same name by author Iain Reid, “Foe” is set in the year 2065 and follows a pair of farmers who live on a secluded piece of land. When a stranger (played by Aaron Pierre) shows up on their doorstep with a startling proposal, their life – and marriage – is thrown into chaos. Mescal’s character is offered the chance to live among the stars, but his wife is not. Instead, he’ll leave behind a robot clone of himself to keep his wife company.
The plot is strikingly similar to the “Black Mirror” episode “Beyond the Sea.” Reid’s book was published back in 2018.

If you’re a fan of true crime documentaries or early millennium classic cartoons then boy does Hulu’s list of new releases have some great news for you!
Hulu continues its implicit understanding that streaming services are basically true crime distribution machines this month with a trio of intriguing titles. That will be followed by Betrayal: The Perfect Husband on July 11, which is based on a compelling podcast of the same name. Bradley Cooper has found his next project to direct after his upcoming Leonard Bernstein project “Maestro,” and it’s a team-up with someone near and dear to his heart, his buddy Will Arnett.
Cooper is attached to direct “Is This Thing On?,” and both Cooper and Arnett will also star in and produce the film that has a script written by Arnett and Mark Chappell (“See How They Run”), an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire. The film is currently in development at Searchlight and is described as a dark comedy, though plot details are being kept under wraps.
Arnett and Chappell did the first draft of the script, and Cooper is expected to do a pass on the script once the writers strike has concluded.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge may have been the star of her seminal comedy series “Fleabag” but Sian Clifford, who played Fleabag’s semi-unstable sister, Claire, proved herself an equally gifted comedic performer. Clifford has since put that status to good use in “Quiz,” “Inside No. 9,” and “See How They Run.” Now, she stars opposite Rob and John Owen Lowe in Netflix’s “Unstable.”
“Unstable,” reportedly inspired by John Owen’s trolling of his father Rob, follows the former as a son forced to work for the biological research company that his father, the latter, runs. However, the father, grieving from the recent death of his wife of 30 years, has become eccentric and erratic and is more focused on activities such as sunbathing naked in his office rather than running Dragon, his company. Clifford plays Anna, the CFO of Dragon, and she tries her hardest to protect her boss from other employees and himself.

This four-part Netflix series isn’t the first time that Josephine Hart’s 1991 novel Damage has been adapted for screen. In 1992, celebrated French director Louis Malle made a feature film of Hart’s book that welcomed Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche, Miranda Richardson, Peter Stomare and Rupert Graves to this exploration of erotic obsession. The film earned Richardson a Best Actress nomination among many others at that year’s Academy Awards.
This serialised version was created by playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm with writer Benji Walters, and directed by Ordinary Love, Good Vibrations and Cherry Bomb‘s Lisa Barrow D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn, updates the action to the modern day and remoulds the characters somewhat. Richard Armitage plays successful surgeon Will, husband to Ingrid and father to Jay and Sally, while Charlie Muphy’s character Anna Barton is expanded to explore her response to the fallout of the story’s scandalous central affair.

My guest this week is Sian Clifford.
Her delicately balanced, tragi-comic portrayal of the brilliantly deadpan Claire in smash hit series Fleabag both won her a Bafta and allowed her to utter the immortal words, “I look like a pencil” in reference to Claire’s legendary hair mishap. In short, Clifford made an indelible mark on viewers.
Among some of her post-Fleabag roles: starring opposite Matthew Macfadyen in Quiz, as one half of the couple accused of cheating on UK gameshow Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?; playing mother to Thomasin McKenzie’s character in the BBC TV adaptation of Kate Atkinson’s novel Life After Life, and starring with Saoirse Ronan in the film See How They Run.
Clifford’s latest role is in Unstable, a new Netflix comedy series created by and starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, executive produced by Victor Fresco of My Name is Earl fame.

There’s a tune in Paul McCartney‘s catalog that he refers to as his post-Beatles get-out-of-town song. Shortly after the Fab Four went their separate ways, Paul and his family fled London for Paul’s Scottish farm. It was the best decision they ever made.

Shortly after eloping, Paul and his wife Linda fled the hurly-burly of London for the farm Paul had acquired in Scotland a few years before. They craved privacy and quiet during one of the most stressful times in their lives. The Beatles were breaking up. There were many boring and tense meetings, and Paul needed to escape. Still, he wasn’t keen to go to Scotland. Eventually, he realized it was worth it.

Paul McCartney said his and Wing’ “Let Me Roll It” is mostly ‘Lennon-esque” because of what he calls the “bog echo.” John Lennon liked using the effect on his vocals.

In his book The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul wrote that he often used an echo effect in the recording studio. He called it “bog echo” because it’s like the echo in a toilet, which British people call a “bog.”
Apparently, it was a universal term in the studio. Paul would sometimes shout up to the control room and ask, “Can we have the bog echo, please?” Whoever was there would ask, “Do you want it at 7.5 inches per second or 15 inches per second?” Paul would say, “We don’t know. Play them both.

Few feature films in recent memory have generated as much excitement around the city of London as Searchlight’s latest pic Rye Lane.
Directed by debut feature filmmaker Raine Allen-Miller, the romantic comedy, set in the bustling, predominantly Black neighborhood of Peckham, South London, is the talk of the town following its strong debut out of Sundance in January.
Deadline’s Anna Smith described the pic as a “sunny, irreverent take on life and love” that provides an “energetic bounce forward” for the romantic comedy genre.
“I wish I could step back and embrace it all, but I’m so nervous,” Allen-Miller told Deadline shortly before the film’s UK premiere at Peckhamplex, a historic community cinema in South London. “My worst nightmare is that people from South London watch it and think, Oh, God.”

There are many references in Paul McCartney‘s “Let ‘Em In,” some more conscious than others. Paul often said that things subconsciously inspired him. Only later did he realize where certain ideas came from.
Paul McCartney | Chris Walter/ Getty Images Paul McCartney’s ‘Let ‘Em In’ is ‘filler’
In his book, The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul said he thinks his and Wings’ song “Let ‘Em In” is a “stocking filler.” That’s how he thinks of some of his songs. “It’s a fun little item, but it’s not your main Christmas present,” he wrote.
Paul said he can get perfectionist about things and think, “This is just not one of my grand pieces.” Then, he’ll get a “bit down” on those songs. For instance, he remembers being very down about his song “Bip Bop.”

Paul McCartney said his single favorite aspect of The Beatles‘ “Lady Madonna” is the dark recurring phrase, “See how they run.” The line is more complex than anyone can imagine and comes from a subconscious place inside Paul. The singer-songwriter has always known how to juxtapose light and dark, good and bad, in his songs with minimal effort.

In The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul wrote that his mother’s death is something he never got over. He was only fourteen when Mary McCartney died of breast cancer. So, he knows that a song that depicts a “very present, nurturing mother” has got to be influenced by a similar sense of loss, just as “Lady Madonna” does.

Adrien Brody is not interested in the culture wars. It’s fascinating, he admits, “but it’s really tragic.”
“We see how fractured our world is. Look around: It’s not hard to see,” says the Oscar-winning actor from his home in New York. Brody had to dive into these dark corners when preparing for “Manodrome,” in which he plays a masculinity cult leader, and was quick to dive right out. “I tried to put this stuff down,” he admits.
But his character, “Dad Dan,” isn’t the super-serious, nefarious figurehead one summons when envisioning a libertarian masculinity cult. Rather, his is a friendly, hoodie-wearing man of leisure who opens his house to all who need sanctuary. Sanctuary, that is, from the evil, entrapping ways of women and modern society.
“It was important for me to not be a superficially manipulative villain,” the 49-year-old star tells Variety of the part.

As part of its Tuesday panel at the Television Critics Association 2023 winter press tour, Masterpiece has announced two new projects including a biographical series about Noele “Nolly” Gordon starring Helena Bonham Carter and “Moonflower Murders,” the follow up project to “Magpie Murders,” are in the works for the network.
“Nolly” tells the story of the British soap opera legend whose unceremonious firing from her hit show at the height of her career was front-page news. As one of the most famous faces on British TV in the 1960s and ’70s, Gordon is described as a woman who refused to play by the rules and ultimately transformed into a forgotten icon after the industry turned on her. Carter will star in the titular role.
“Doctor Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies penned the script. “Nolly” marks the first production from Nicola Shindler’s new production company Quay Street Productions, which is part of ITV Studios.

This interview with “Living” cinematographer Jamie D. Ramsay first appeared in the Below-the-Line issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Oliver Hermanus’s “Living,” a 1950s-set remake of Akira Kurosawa’s classic film “Ikiru,” translates the Japanese master’s backdrop to the same time frame in which the earlier film was released (with a screenplay adapted by Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro), only this time with a mild-mannered British bureaucrat (shatteringly played by Bill Nighy) battling mortality.
“Stepping into the shoes of Kurosawa was both an honor and quite a frightening journey,” said cinematographer Jamie D. Ramsay, who won the Bronze Frog at Camerimage this year for his striking work in the film. “And I believe the only way to do it justice was to depart from a direct homage and allow his filmic hero to sit in the background in our subconscious, so that we were allowed to go on...

Total box office revenue across the U.K. and Ireland in 2022 was £978. 5 million (1.17 billion), an increase of 64 versus 2021’s total of £597 million (719.8 million), according to Comscore Movies’ review of the year.
Prior to the pandemic, annual box office in the territory had exceeded £1.3 billion in each of the five years up to and including 2019. The review anticipates a full recovery by 2024.
A total of 911 new titles were released theatrically in 2022, up from 503 in 2021 and almost returning to the peak of 938 in 2019. However, there remains a marked reduction in blockbuster releases due to production delays, the review notes. 2019 saw 186 ‘saturation’ releases i.e. films opening in 250+ cinemas, which dropped in 2022 to 135. As the average revenue for each saturation release was £6.4 million in 2022 and £6.9 million in 2019, the review estimates that a return to 2019 levels of saturation releases could add £325–£350 million to annual box office totals.

BAFTA has unveiled the longlists across all categories for its 2023 Film Awards, and Martin McDonagh’s tragicomedy The Banshees Of Inisherin and Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front lead.
Martin McDonagh’s impressive Banshees haul includes Best Director, Film, and Screenplay nods while Colin Farrell is up for Leading Actor and Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon were handed Best Support Actor and Actress nods.
Charlotte Well’s festival favorite Aftersun appears on eight lists, including Best Film, Director, and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Other titles that are well represented today include Oliver Hermanus’s Living and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis.
In notable snubs, James Cameron’s Avatar sequel The Way of Water did not make either the Best Film or Director longlists. The box office hit is absent from all major categories but shows strongly in craft categories, including Sound and Special Visual Effects.

There was a time (it feels like an eternity ago) that so many in the movie business thought the climb out of the pandemic was going to be swift, looking to 2021 as the industry's big comeback year. Was it a comeback compared to 2020? Absolutely. But the attempt to regain something resembling normalcy in the theatrical marketplace has been far slower than anticipated, with 2024 or even 2025 pegged as the time when the dust will finally settle at this point. This to say, we've got a long road ahead.
Be that as it may, 2022 served as an encouraging year in many ways. Thanks to huge hits like "Top Gun: Maverick," "The Batman," "Minions: The Rise of Gru," "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," "Jurassic World Dominion," and "Avatar: The Way of Water," the domestic box office is expected to finish at 7.4 billion, which would be about a 67 improvement over last year's 4.48 billion tally.

I believe it was Sean Parker who once said, "Reviving a genre isn't cool. You know what's cool? Deconstructing a genre."
Yes, we cinephiles probably throw the word "deconstruction" around a little too casually when talking about genre films that surprised us or defied our expectations. There are, however, times when the term is absolutely applicable. Take "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," a movie that everyone in the world appreciates and enjoys discussing in a calm, rational manner. Rian Johnson's sequel to "The Force Awakens" deliberately takes everything filmgoers know about "Star Wars" and throws it out the window. The goal, as /Film's Jacob Hall once wrote, is not to destroy "Star Wars" but to "challenge you and make you question what 'Star Wars' is and what it can be."
Toying with a genre's tropes is nothing new for Johnson. Heck, it's something he's done in every movie he's directed so far,...

The London Film Critics’ Circle, the oldest such organization on Planet Earth, announced the nominations for their forthcoming awards ceremony. As might be expected, they “led local,” with the highest number of nominations going to Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun.” The McDonagh film, which stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, is set on an island of tall tales off the west coast of Ireland. The Scottish Wells set her memoir-ish movie at a 2-star Turkish resort, which caters mostly to British tourists.
“Inisherin” has nine nominations, for Film of the Year, Director of the Year, Screenwriter of the Year, Actor of the Year (Farrell), two for Supporting Actor of the Year (Gleeson and Barry Keoghan), Supporting Actress of the Year (Kerry Condon), and a nomination for The Attenborough Award for Best British/Irish film.
