The Boondock Saints became a giant cult hit when it hit home video and, indeed, is a movie both loved and hated on this site. The film seemed to come out of nowhere. No one seemed to remember its theatrical run, but word of mouth soon made this film a huge underground hit. Why was this film so unknown? A multitude of factors played into the film’s mystery. Bad timing for the release, possibly bad word of mouth from a very famous studio head, and the biggest problem with the whole thing, the writer/director.

Respectability has been a pillar of Black American culture since Emancipation. Since Black people arrived on the shores of America, we have been subjected to hardships and cruelties based solely on our skin color. For centuries we’ve combated horrible stereotypes in our everyday lives and American popular culture. For Black women, in particular, being anything other than docile and likable meant that you could be seen as masculine, mean, overly sexual, asexual, and conniving. These terms were weaponized against Black people by outsiders and insiders like W.E.B Dubois, who touted his talented tenth, the most educated of the race, as the epitome of “good” Blackness and the embattled Bill Cosby with his “perfect” portrayal of the Black family in “The Cosby Show.”
Though respectability has been lauded as a tool for full citizenship in the Black community, it’s a falsehood. More than that, the performance of likability is exhausting.

Vera really likes to keep us waiting. Series 11 of this beloved British detective series began broadcasting back in summer 2021, and after four episodes were released between then and January 2022, there’s been a year-long unexplained wait for the last two feature-length episodes of the series, which finally began airing on ITV1 on Sunday 15th January.
But like buses, you wait for one series of Vera and two arrive at once, as straight after Series 11 finishes we’ll be getting four more weekly episodes making up Series 12 as well, starting on 29th January.
Not only that, there’s another Vera instalment, The Rising Tide, on the way later this year, based on Ann Cleeves’s latest Vera novel of the same name.
So what can we expect from the upcoming episodes of Vera? More gruesome murders, of course, and more stunning Northumberland scenery, but there’s also going to be more...

Do decent people become real bastards when they acquire wealth?” For Hugh Quarshie, that’s the central question in the soapy new drama, Riches, in which he plays the CEO of a family-run Black haircare company. For reasons that quickly become clear, Quarshie doesn’t end up having much screen time – but his impact is felt throughout the entire show. Over six episodes, the debut season follows the Richards family as they figure out how to save their business from financial ruin.
Taking the role in Riches was not a difficult decision for Quarshie. Since his first professional credit in 1979, the 68-year-old’s career has ranged widely, from medical procedural Holby City to the title role in Othello for the RSC. Earlier this year, he was Bafta-nominated for best actor in Stephen, a miniseries about the aftermath of Stephen Lawrence’s murder. When he first spoke to Riches showrunner Abby Ajayi,...

They join previously announced Saoirse Ronan (“Little Women”), Stephen Graham (“The Irishman”), Harris Dickinson (“Triangle of Sadness”), Erin Kellyman (“Willow”), Kathy Burke (“Absolutely Fabulous”), newcomer Elliott Heffernan and music artist turned actor Paul Weller.
McQueen is writing, directing and producing the project.
Few details have been released for the Apple original film, which has already gone into production in the U.K. The title “Blitz” refers to the German bombardment of London during World War 2 and it has been confirmed the film will follow a variety of Londoners during 1940 and 1941 as they navigate a new normal. Measures introduced by the British government at the time to reduce fatalities included blackouts,...

U.K. broadcaster ITV has claimed to be “More than TV” for over two years, but it’s only now, with the debut of its first dedicated streaming platform, that that mission statement is becoming a reality.
This week’s launch of Itvx has seen the complete overhaul of outdated catch-up service ITV Hub into a sleek and shiny streamer, similar in layout to a Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, and targeting the 35-55 year-old demographic who watch ITV shows but don’t yet have a deep relationship with the brand on-demand. But the makeover isn’t just limited to a new interface: With a fresh streaming profile comes a landmark shift for one of the broadcaster’s most important genres — drama.
Scripted will be a significant focus on the rejigged service, with a host of dramas launching exclusively on the streaming site rather than on the main linear ITV1 channel.

Riches follows the story of cosmetics mogul Stephen Richards’ family as they deal with his death and the drama, secrets and lies that surface.
Executive producer and writer of the series Abby Ajayi recently sat down with uInterview founder Erik Meers to discuss black representation on the show.
“There aren’t very many shows like this in the U.K., but actually my starting point was telling a story about a black family and family business, and once we located it in cosmetics and hair, it became very much about talking about the politics and aspirational element of that,” Ajayi said. “The sense of being representative or inclusive is in its DNA. It’s a black family so there’s going to be a lot of black people on the screen. It’s about black hair and beauty. I write to see myself on screen and I always have. Inevitably,...

It’s not exactly a spoiler to say that by minute 11 of the opening episode of “Riches,” there’s a power struggle. The new Prime Video drama series centers on the fortunes of Flair & Glory, a UK-based cosmetics company that prides itself on being one of the beauty industry’s premiere businesses, Black-owned or otherwise. Yet, when the man at the top of that pyramid falls, it’s up to the rest of the family to fill the void he left behind.
Put it off as long as you can, but it’s a near-impossibility to talk about “Riches” without addressing the similarities its premise shares with one of TV’s heaviest hitters. The center of the Venn diagram between “Riches” and “Succession” has things that aren’t necessarily proprietary to the latter. It’s hard to build drama around a fictional large company without at least one financial scandal...

The nighttime soap, with its amped-up rivalries and luxurious trappings, may be somewhat out of fashion on broadcast TV right now. In the years since “Empire,” there hasn’t been a new show with commensurate vivid ambition, or such a shameless desire to thrill.
Which has created an opening for streamers. Earlier this year, the Kerry Washington-produced “Reasonable Doubt,” on Hulu, made a case for itself as a would-be “Scandal” successor, with its careening defense attorney protagonist taking viewers on a rollickingly dramatic ride. And now, on Amazon Prime Video, comes the series “Riches,” created by Abby Ajayi, previously a writer for “How to Get Away With Murder” and “Inventing Anna.” Ajayi’s new series merges a sharply observed family dynamic with a high-stepping verve reminiscent of the best of the genre.

It’s been a big year for Prime Video. From The Boys season 3 to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to even the terrible games presented on Thursday Night Football, there were many hits to satisfy Jeff Bezos’ bottom line. How is the Amazon streamer planning on closing out 2022? Why, with another potential hit, of course!
Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for December 2022 is highlighted by the return of an old favorite. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan season 3 premieres all eight episodes on Dec. 21. This time around John Krasinki’s CIA analyst will be dealing with a potentially nuclear conflict with Russia. The only other original TV series of note this month is Three Pines on Dec. 2. The mystery series stars Alfred Molina as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache.
Over on the movie side of things, Prime Video is bringing forward a major holiday tile on Dec.

It’s time to get the hot cocoa boiling and the holiday decorations up! It’s almost December and nearly every streaming service has consumers covered with both seasonal content and new shows to carry them into the new year. Amazon’s Prime Video service has a few new series debuting, including “Riches.” Starring Deborah Ayorinde, from “Them,” the series is described as “a high-stakes family drama about the exploits of the stylish, privileged, and super-successful Richards siblings vying for control over the family business.”
The streamer also brings actor John Krasinski back into the world of Tom Clancy with the third season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” This installment finds CIA officer Jack Ryan wrongly accused of treason and on the run from his own government as he races against the clock to stop a global catastrophe. The season hits December 21.

On the 8th of December, ITV Hub is being replaced by ITV’s brand-new streaming service, Itvx. Yes, this might seem like the latest in a long line of rebrands that don’t appear to change anything concrete but Itvx will host new and exclusive programmes.
Like ITV Hub currently, you’ll also be able to watch the ITV channels live on Itvx – although let’s hope the new service has ironed out the live-streaming problems that frustrated so many football fans during last year’s Euros.
Itvx: Free and Paid For Options (Including BritBox)
Itvx will have over 10,000 hours of content to stream for free, including past and present ITV dramas and documentaries, some US series, and hundreds of films (including the Back to the Future trilogy).

Ahead of next week’s Mipcom, Banijay has acquired global rights to Argentine celebrity competition series “The Hotel,” continuing its hugely successful relationship with Diego Guebel’s high-flying Boxfish in Argentina.
Produced by Boxfish for Canal 13, one of Argentina’s biggest free-to-air channels, “The Hotel” (“El Hotel”) sees 16 celebrity contestants shut themselves away for four months in a luxury hotel on the outskirts of a city. There’s only one caveat: the luxury establishment does not employ any staff.
“While guests enjoy a luxurious stay in the pool, spa and live shows and tuck into gourmet dinners, staff are housed in the hotel’s service area, washing linen, preparing breakfast and serving the guests’ every need,” Banijay explained Saturday, announcing its acquisition.
The celebrities decide at the start of the week who are ‘guests’ and who become the ‘hotel staff.’ At the end of the week, an elimination duel determines who leaves “The Hotel,...
