Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog) and Olivia Colman (The Favourite) have been tapped to star in The Roses, a reimagining of the 1989 classic The War of the Roses that Jay Roach (Bombshell) will direct for Searchlight Pictures.
Currently in development, the dark comedy’s logline is as follows: Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman): successful careers, great kids, an enviable sex life. But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down.
Directed by Danny DeVito and starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, the original film adaptation of The War of the Roses was released by 20th Century Fox in 1989, garnering a BAFTA and three Golden Globe nominations, including for Best Motion Picture, among other accolades.

Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney drama American Rust is returning for its second season — on its third platform.
Amazon announced that the sophomore run — titled American Rust: Broken Justice — will premiere on its Prime Video platform rather than the previously announced ad-supported service Freevee. All 10 episodes of the season will debut in a binge drop on March 28.

‘Shadow And Bone’, ‘Glamorous’ & ‘Agent Elvis’ Among 5 Series Canceled By Netflix Amid Strike Impact
Exclusive: Netflix will not be going forward with more seasons of live-action series Shadow and Bone and Glamorous and adult animated comedies Agent Elvis, Farzar and Captain Fall.
The decision was made a week after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike and a month and a half after the end of the WGA work stoppage as networks and platforms continue to evaluate the impact from the strike-related seven-month production shutdown.
While there had been a slew of series cancellations and un-renewals by linear networks and streamers during and immediately after the strikes, Netflix had largely refrained from making cancellation decisions during the past 6½ months while announcing a number of renewals, including One Piece (S2), Ginny & Georgia (S3 and S4); The Lincoln Lawyer (S3), Xo, Kitty (S2), Heartstopper (S2 and S3), The Night Agent (S2 picked up on the eve of the WGA strike), The Diplomat (S2), Fubar (S2), Sweet Magnolias...

The Streaming Era began with a promise of nurturing shows without fear of ratings pressure and quick cancellations. Of course, that was a lark. Soon enough, the streamers began slashing shows as quickly and brutally as any Nielsen-obsessed broadcaster, and they were all flooded with same complaint: “The streamers just cancel everything! Nothing gets more than a season anymore!”
How true is that really? After all, the streamers are looking for hit shows, just like traditional networks. If a show gets high viewership relative to the cost of producing it, it gets renewed. Otherwise, it is canceled. That is how it has worked since the days of black-and-white TV.
To get to the heart of the matter, Variety Intelligence Platform (VIP+) and Luminate collaborated on a data exploration to determine how often the leading U.S.-based streaming and linear programmers have canceled series TV series over the past three years.

“It’s like asking a woman when she’s crowning, ‘Do you want to give birth, again?’ ” explains Patricia Arquette of being asked about future directing ambitions while still waiting to screen her debut. “You’re like, ‘Not now!’ ”
Arquette’s feature, Gonzo Girl, is an adaptation of the book by Cheryl Della Pietra, who drew on her time as Hunter S. Thompson’s assistant in the 1990s for a fictionalized story about an aspiring writer who is tasked with extracting the latest novel from a drug-addled iconoclast. The script first came to the Oscar-winning actress, who had begun talking to her agents about nascent directorial aspirations, as an offer to star. In reading it, she saw the chance to explore themes, according to Arquette, that included — but were not limited to — “celebrity distortion, co-dependence, addiction, unhealed wounds, art, joy, life, sexuality.”

No news is good news... until it's bad news.
Apple TV+ has canceled its Uma Thurman drama series Suspicion after a single season.
Deadline first reported the news a year and a half after its freshman finale.
"When the son of a prominent American businesswoman (Thurman) is kidnapped from a New York hotel, the eye of suspicion quickly falls on four seemingly ordinary British citizens who were at the hotel on the night in question," the logline teased.
"As they find themselves in a trans-Atlantic cat and mouse race to evade the combined forces of the National Crime Agency and the F.B.I. to prove their innocence, it becomes apparent that not everyone can be trusted."
"Who is really behind the mysterious abduction, and who is only guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time?"

High Desert‘s season finale went out with a literal, yet very unpredictable bang.
At the top of the episode, Peg’s in a bit of hot water and that couldn’t be any more of an understatement. She and the guru are tied up in the back of the Gattchis’ truck, and to make matters worse (or I guess it depends on your perspective, maaaan), they’re both “tripping balls.” In the middle of the desert, Bob finally reveals that Donna fell down the stairs and impaled herself on a trophy. A total accident, he says. After convincing Nick...

We have arrived at the season finale of High Desert, and it ends in the most perfect way possible. Once Peggy gets the money, all her problems will vanish. But surprisingly, the latter occurs without any need for the former. And that’s life—uncertainty at its finest. Episode 8 gives Peggy the perfect “sendoff” after bringing every aspect of her life together in the very heart of the High Desert, Pioneertown.

Rupert Friend, currently on screens in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, has joined Sophie Thatcher in Companion, the sci-fi thriller from the team behind last year’s horror hit Barbarian.
The New Line feature begins production this month and has been filling out its call sheet at breakneck speed. Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri and Harvey Guillén all have signed on in recent weeks.
Drew Hancock wrote the original script and is making his directorial debut with the feature, the many plot points of which are being kept hush-hush. It is, however, being described as self-contained, and Thatcher is set to play a character who is more than meets the eye.
Friend’s character information is being kept in the dark, but suffice it to say the actor won’t be living up to his last name.
Zach Cregger will produce the feature along with Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures.

A single glance at Ethan has deeply affected Peggy. This is the most vulnerable situation we’ve seen Peggy in all this time. But even then, we do not see her break down. She is rather happy now, and she is even ready to forgive Denny and give him another chance. But this doesn’t change the fact that Denny is a thief who steals money from stores. Denny, despite being a criminal by profession, if that’s even possible, has a very soft spot for Peggy and is a kind person in general. So, he is more than glad to have a second chance with Peggy. Episode 7 of High Desert takes things up a notch for Peggy, both physically and mentally.

Judy has found a finger using her sniffing skills in Bob’s backyard. But Peggy and Denny have to get it analyzed and find out whether it belongs to Donatella Scarborough. If it does, they are in for the reward. If not, they will have to investigate further. They have Bob for that, at least for the time being. But is Bob fit to help them in the investigation? Episode 6 of High Desert shows how Peggy makes use of her skills to save Bruce’s company and Bob simultaneously.

It’s 42 degrees Celsius outside as I write the fifth High Desert article sitting in my small, dimly lit room. In a surreal way, the show adds to the smell of summer that fills my nostrils. The salty breeze and the dry Earth, to which I am subjected by my window right beside me, teleport me to Yucca Valley, California. And with every episode, I am drawn more and more to Peggy Newman. I don’t want to be like her, but I do want her to be my friend. That way, I could hang out with her and share everything with her with zero fear of being judged. The only way I can describe her is “cool”. Episode 5 shows Peggy taking Denny, who is pretending to be an art consultant, to Bob so that they can find out Donatella’s whereabouts. But oddly enough, it is someone else who...

Chicago – One of the peculiar secrets … since revealed … in the new Apple TV+ series “High Desert” is that the icon Bernadette Peters portrays two characters. One is the mother (Rosalyn) of main character Peggy, and the other is mysterious actor Ginger who somehow ended up in California desert country. New episodes drop every Wednesday.
“High Desert” features Peggy Newman (Patricia Arquette), an ex-heroin addict who lives in arid California and needs a life change. That is difficult, for besides her visits to a local methadone clinic she is just barely holding on as a performer in Pioneer Town, a rundown tourist attraction. The only thing she desperately wants to cling to is the house of her deceased mother (Bernadette Peters), but her sister Dianne (Christine Taylor) is intent on selling it. Peggy needs to raise some extra cash, so she comes up with a plan to become a private investigator,...

Four episodes later, I feel like there isn’t anything Peggy Newman cannot do. In a world like ours and a life like hers, no one else could have handled it better than her. She is always doing something, so she doesn’t have time to pause and reflect on her life. And what’s interesting is that she isn’t one to stop for a moment or two and think about her life. Peggy is a one-woman show, and there’s no stopping her. As strong as one can be, but at the same time, equally lovable. We understand why Denny is head over heels for her. Episode 4 of High Desert is another example of her strong character, as she does all that she can to prevent Bruce from declaring bankruptcy and also tries to get things back to normal with her sister Dianne. She knows that Bob’s wife,...

In the new Apple TV+ comedy noir series “High Desert,” Patricia Arquette and Matt Dillon play an off-and-on again couple so naturally that it seems like they must have starred together in some iconic 1990s indie movie. Surprisingly, they haven’t, but the off-kilter, sun-baked menace of films like Arquette starrers “True Romance” and “Lost Highway” permeates the new series, which is peopled with what Arquette calls “wild and weird creatures” in an environment that alternates between arid beauty and strip mall desolation.
In “High Desert,” Arquette’s methadone-dependent, perennial wild child Peggy Newman could not be more different than her buttoned-up “Severance” character Harmony Cobel, whether she’s piloting a dune buggy around the desert, swinging from a chandelier in a Pioneertown Old West show or getting mixed up with another half-baked scam. Peggy, who recently lost her mother, needs to raise money to stay in their house. She...

Apple TV+ has a strategy, and it has stuck with that strategy. The service that has built a reputation for offering quality, original TV shows and movies has resisted calls from outsiders to add more library content to its platform, preferring to continue going its own way. That strategy might finally be paying off, according to new data from Nielsen, as reported by Deadline.

Nielsen’s data shows that Apple TV+ saw record viewership numbers in March, and that record was broken in April. The streamer is on track to break its own record again in May, and weekly viewership overall has jumped 147% year-over-year. That must come as a relief for Apple. As The Streamable reported, the churn rate for Apple TV+ spiked dramatically after its price hike in October. It’s remained stubbornly above the industry average ever since.

Patricia Arquette is continuing her relationship with Apple, but her new comedy, High Desert, is much different than last year’s Severance.
In the half-hour series High Desert from co-creators Nancy Fichman, Katie Ford and Jennifer Hoppe-House, the Oscar winner plays Peggy, a recovering addict with a predilection for chaos who, after the death of her mother (Bernadette Peters), winds up working as a private investigator in the California desert town where she grew up. Jay Roach directs and Ben Stiller is an executive producer for the series that includes Matt Dillon as ex-husband Denny, alongside fellow castmembers Rupert Friend, Weruche Opia, Brad Garrett, Christine Taylor, Keir O’Donnell and Eric Petersen.
During the below interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Arquette explains why she connected so personally to Peggy’s path, how her work on Severance impacted the new show, why Stiller was unable to direct the series as initially planned,...
