The animation market in the West has found a new competitor among its ranks with Netflix. While the streaming service has had trouble with films, it has produced some of the best-animated shows of recent years, including IPs like Castlevania, Blood of Zeus, Arcane, Blue Eye Samurai, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. However, one of the biggest animated shows for the platform is coming to an end, but if the creators of the show are to be believed, it is just the beginning.

Arcane had one banger of a season at the tail end of 2021, and now, three years later, the show will be returning with its second and final season, much to the disappointment of fans. Christian Linke, co-creator of the smash hit animated streaming show, has come out with good news disputing the show ending, which he reports, was sort of the plan all along.

The history of Hollywood adapting video games in movies and TV shows has been a little spotty, to say the least, but in recent years, I think the tide has been turning. With shows like The Last of Us and Fallout, video game fans have developed a little hope to see their favorite adapted into a great piece of art and while there will still be wasted efforts like Netflix’s The Witcher and Paramount+’s Halo, they are still only two shows. So, in keeping with that spirit of hope we created a list of the 10 best TV shows that were adapted from video games, they can be original stories in the world of video games but they have to be connected to the original IP.

Humans have wondered about the philosophical aspect of the relationship between mankind and technology via art, literature, and motion pictures since the advent of machines. This led to the rise of the cyberpunk genre with movies and shows such as Blade Runner, The Terminator, RoboCop, Inspector Gadget, Ghost in the Shell, I, Robot, Ex Machina, Alita: Battle Angel, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Love, Death & Robots, and Upgrade, which asked us to wonder whether or not an android can be as human as humans are. Through characters like Cyborg (from the DC comics), cybernetic implants and prosthetics have been used to comment on the future of people with physical impairments, which is a change that is already happening in real life. Bionic goes a step further and imagines a future where para-athletes with cybernetic implants are going to make able-bodied athletes obsolete. While it’s certainly an interesting concept, is the execution any good?...

Some people say they prefer video games to any kind of TV show these days, and it's not hard to see why. Not only do games offer amazing stories and great graphics, but they also draw you in and make you feel like a part of the universe in which the events take place.
However, games take time, skill, and patience, and they're not for everyone. So, if you are interested in some of the plots of video games, but want to sit back and relax while watching them, here are 8 best adaptations that might be a perfect choice.
8. Sonic Prime (2022-...) – 60%
The fate of the world is once again in Sonic's hands as he must use his super speed to save the newly created multiverse. Although the latest installment of the famous hedgehog's journey didn't impress audiences too much, viewers were much more appreciative, giving the show an 86% approval rating.

Video game adaptations have been a popular genre in Hollywood for years, offering captivating stories with built-in fan bases. While they can be well-received, achieving success with these adaptations can be challenging. Despite this, recent hits like Pedro Pascal’s The Last of Us and Jonathan Nolan’s Fallout, starring Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins, have garnered praise. However, these are just the recent examples of the acclaimed adaptations in the genre.

Spoilers follow for the first season of "Fallout."
With "Fallout," Prime Video delivered one of the best video game adaptations ever, one that stands up there with the likes of "Arcane," "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" and "Castlevania."
A big reason for the show's success is that it is not a 1:1 remake like, say, "The Last of Us." Instead, "Fallout" tells an entirely original story with brand new characters. There is some overlap, of course, from slightly similar plots to cheeky references and returning characters from the games, but otherwise, this feels less like replaying your favorite "Fallout" game and more like watching a brand new "Fallout" game play out in front of you.
This allows the TV show to tell a good and thrilling story without the restraints of canon or the games. This is how we get the entire pre-war storyline that gives us an origin for Vault Boy and...

With the recent Arcane: League of Legends, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and The Last of Us, TV creators adapted popular video games into acclaimed series (thus cracking a code that still vexes filmmakers). Now we have a new contender, with the April 11 release of Prime Video’s Fallout — which, with any luck, will be more revered than radioactive. Based on the video game series of the same name and adapted by Westworld’s Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, Fallout is “the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have,” Amazon MGM Studios says. “Two-hundred years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind,” the studio’s description continues, “and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them.” Here’s what we...

It’d be easy to say that all that Cyberpunk 2077 needed was three extra years in the oven and it would have come out as good as it is in its current state. On arrival, the game was the thoughtless child of abominable crunch made oppressively worse by mismanagement and a toxic culture of hype from within CD Projekt Red and without. And it took the entire industry—from Cdpr’s tired, infuriated workforce, to the more constructive corners of their existing fanbase—raging against all the problems of Aaa hubris to bring the game to this moment.

When Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December 2020, the game was glitchier than the brain of someone suffering from cyberpsychosis. You could almost see the game code break down in real-time, especially on the base PlayStation 4. Instead of abandoning the title, though, CD Projekt Red stuck with Cyberpunk 2077 and released patch after patch to stabilize and improve the game. These seemingly came to a head shortly after the release of the fantastic Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, but the company didn’t stop there.
Soon, CD Projekt Red will release Cyberpunk 2077’s only Dlc: Phantom Liberty. This bit of optional content will give players more quests, weapons, and skills for the low-ish cost of $30. To commemorate the Dlc, CD Projekt Red is also launching the Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 patch, which will revamp numerous in-game systems and mechanics to make it feel like an entirely new title. While...

This review contains no spoilers and is based on the first episode of Flcl: Grunge.
“The people who live here never think about the future…”
Flcl is a cherished anime relic of the 2000s that’s only six episodes, but still found international acclaim after airing on Adult Swim in 2003. It’s frequently considered to be the golden goose of anime coming-of-age stories where lost youth accept the unpredictable nature of life and embrace the harsh truth that nobody has full control over the world’s whims.
Flcl’s success was lightning in a bottle programming that in all likelihood probably shouldn’t have been (repeatedly) returned to and milked into an increasingly generic IP. Adult Swim’s previous sequels, Flcl: Progressive and Flcl: Alternative weren’t received as well and seemed to touch on the same ideas, albeit in new ways, but with diminishing returns. This understandably...

Peacock’s bold, bloody adaptation of the PlayStation vehicular combat classic, Twisted Metal, struggles to balance camp with car carnage.
“What do you say, John? Will you drive?”
There’s been a recent run of exceptional video game adaptations between The Last of Us, Castlevania, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and The Super Mario Bros and Sonic the Hedgehog movies. There’s no longer the same stigma that once accompanied video game series and movies. Streaming services are now taking major swings on video game IPs whether it’s Netflix’s The Witcher, Amazon’s upcoming Tomb Raider series, or Peacock’s Twisted Metal. It wasn’t long ago when a Twisted Metal TV series would have been a ludicrous venture, but it’s now as good an idea as any. Twisted Metal has a dark, absurdist world that’s had decades to develop. There’s easily a strong enough foundation for a weird and memorable limited series.

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) was the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2023 Best Character Voice-Over ballot consists of 148 performances, which is down by 74 from last year. Seeking her third victory is Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on “Big Mouth.” Also in the mix are former winners Shearer, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), and Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”).

In its current form, the Best Animated Program Emmy category allows submissions targeted at viewers aged 13 and above, while series and specials made for younger audiences are now relegated to the Children’s and Family Emmys. Potential nominees for this award are also required to have runtimes in excess of 15 minutes.
The 2023 Best Animated Program ballot list below consists of 33 entries (which include plot descriptions). Per category rules, all are either one-off specials or single episodes of continuing series. Seeking their dozenth victory and first since 2019 are the team behind “The Simpsons,” who just wrapped their 34th season. Other shows hoping for repeat wins this year include “Archer,” “Bob’s Burgers,” “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal,” “Rick and Morty,” and “South Park.”

For better or worse, the next big bet in Hollywood right now is video games. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is the biggest film of 2023 so far. "The Last of Us" earned strong reviews from television critics, although some game critics were more skeptical. Even the anime series "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" -- a spin-off of "Cyberpunk 2077" -- sniped anime of the year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
Leading the charge was 2020's "Sonic the Hedgehog," which survived terrible initial press to score the best opening weekend box office ever for a video game film at the time of its release. A committed performance by Jim Carrey helped, as did a Sonic redesign led by Tyson Hesse and a hard-working team of visual effects artists. Its sequel, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," made even more money.
Next up we've "Knuckles," a Paramount+ television series featuring everybody's favorite grumpy echidna voiced by Idris Elba.

Cyberpunk 2077 is the experience that refuses to die. The game was released in a buggy and broken state, falling dismally short of the quality fans had expected from the studio behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. However, CD Projekt Red has stuck with Cyberpunk 2077. Update after update, patch after patch, the game slowly improved until it was in the state it should have been released in. And then Cyberpunk: Edgerunners took the internet by storm and reinvigorated interest in the source material. Now, several months before the release of Cyberpunk 2077’s Dlc, Phantom Liberty, interest in Cyberpunk 2077 is surging. It’s almost as if the game goes through cycles. Or maybe sales bring out intrigued gamers.
To be fair, Cyberpunk 2077 is barely recognizable from the glitchy, unoptimized disappointment that was released onto PCs and consoles in 2020. CD Projekt Red has added ray tracing, improved Npc civilian behavior, and so much more.

Streaming services have been investing heavily in global content production and licensing as American audiences grew more interested in foreign content in recent years. The demand for non-English digital originals grew from 5.9% of the total demand for streaming original shows in the first quarter of 2020 to 8.5% at the end of 2022, according to Parrot Analytics’ data, which takes into account consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, among other engagement.
The goal now is to create hit shows that are successful around the world, including in the U.S., with examples like “Money Heist,” “Squid Game” and “Dark.” Although Netflix takes the lead when it comes to non-English content, rivals are trying to catch up.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Disney announced it would spend up to $9 billion a year on worldwide content for Disney+ by 2024. Meanwhile, HBO Max announced it would produce more than 100 local-language projects for Latin America...

Despite what the creators of HBO's "The Last of Us" live-action show may tell you, there have already been excellent video game adaptations, but most of them are in animation. From "Castlevania," to "Arcane," animation has captured the unique and diverse worlds of popular gaming franchises and reinvented them with entertaining and profound stories. Last year, we got a new entry in the canon of video game adaptations that proves there is no such thing as a video game curse — "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners."
Based on one of the biggest video game failures in recent memory, there was a lot to be excited for and also worried about with "Edgerunners." The original "Cyberpunk 2077" was a highly-anticipated game, publicized based on the studio behind it and the inclusion of Keanu Reeves in its cast,...

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)Streaming has been a true blessing for anime fans. It has made brought previously inaccessible shows to the masses and also allowed for some cool experiments, with studios like Wit and Trigger, as well as auteurs like Masaaki Yuasa to give us deeply weird (and hyper-violent) anime like "Devilman Crybaby" and "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners." On the other hand, in an era where every new anime is instantly available through simulcast, it is rather baffling to see streaming jail become a thing.
Shows that would otherwise be available within hours of their initial broadcast are now held up for months on end, killing all hype. Though Netflix is slightly getter better, Hulu and Disney+ are licensing anime and withholding any sort of information about when they plan to release them, before they just...

HBO’s live-action seriesThe Last of Us has set a new record with its Rotten Tomatoes score.
The show, which premieres in the US on Sunday 15 January and on Monday 16 January on Sky Atlantic in the UK, is adapted from the acclaimed 2013 video game of the same name.
Ahead of its debut, The Last of Us has been lavished with praise by many reviewers – including The Independent’s chief TV critic Nick Hilton.
On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the series currently boasts a glowing “fresh” score of 97 per cent positive reviews.
The score is especially noteworthy given the tepid reception video game adaptations usually receive. Several – such as 1993’s Super Mario Bros or 2003’s Alone in the Dark – have been cited as ranking among the worst films ever made.

As Hollywood looks for new content to keep consumers engaged, video games have become an intellectual property gold mine with the number of film and television adaptations consistently growing over the last two decades — especially in the streaming world.
Video game adaptations released within the past several years include the films “Uncharted,” “Mortal Kombat,” “Sonic the Hedgehog,” “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” and “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” and TV shows “The Witcher,” “Halo,” “Arcane,” “Resident Evil” and “Cyberpunk Edgerunners.”

Valve recently revealed the winners of the 2022 Steam Awards, which allowed fans to vote for and celebrate the cream of last year’s gaming crop. This year’s winners included Elden Ring grabbing yet another Game of the Year award and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade winning Best Soundtrack. Many gamers can agree on most of the nominees and winners, but one Steam Awards title has once again divided the internet: Cyberpunk 2077. That controversial 2020 game won the “Labor of Love” award, which raises the important question of whether it’s actually time to forgive CD Projekt Red for releasing that game in such a sorry state.
For those unaware the Labor of Love award is described as follows:
This game has been out for a while. The team is well past the debut of their creative baby, but being the good parents they are, the devs continue to nurture and support their creation.

Television is going full fan boy for video game adaptations.
Earlier this month, Amazon greenlit a new series based on award-winning PlayStation game God of War, with Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins and The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby on board.
HBO’s The Last of Us, a hotly-anticipated small-screen version of the 2013 action-adventure game from Naughty Dog and Sony, created by Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, one of the game’s original directors, drops Jan. 15.
They join a long list of game-to-series adaptations, from Halo (Paramount+) to Twisted Metal (Peacock) and Horizon (Netflix). Alongside God of War, Amazon is also moving forward with its TV version of post-apocalyptic role-playing game Fallout, being adapted by Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan.
All of the adaptations hope to capitalize on the games’ devoted base of hard core fans. But Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the hit anime series...

Implementing the great drawing and animation style of Studio Trigger, which has resulted in titles like “Kill La Kill, “Promare” and “Bna”, featuring an opening by Franz Ferdinand, and based on a story by Polish writers Bartosz Sztybor, Jan Bartkowicz and Łukasz Ludkowski, that has, thankfully, left all notions of political correctness out of the title, “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” is definitely one of the best anime titles of the year.
The story takes place in Night City, a self-reliant metropolis located in the Free State of California that suffers from extensive corporate corruption, cybernetic addiction, and gang violence. The city is split into six districts, each of which has its own precise living requirements, and is controlled by a number of different megacorporations, including Arasaka and its rival Militech. "My Hero Academia" is one of the most popular manga and anime around often thought of as a successor to the "Big Three" of manga. The manga is consistently on top sales lists, and the anime remains as popular as ever even after six seasons.
It is easy to see why. The story, originally created by Kōhei Horikoshi, brings the best tropes of a shonen action manga into the world of comic book superheroes, taking inspiration from classic Marvel comics, especially "Spider-Man" ones. "My Hero Academia" takes place in a world where 80 population has some kind of superpower, or "quirk." We focus on Midoriya Izuku, a kid born without powers, but who yearns more than anything to follow in the footsteps of Japan's greatest hero, All Might (essentially the show's answer to Superman and Captain America). When he is accepted into a prestigious academy for superheroes, he decides to become the number one hero,...

Photo: ‘Blockbuster’ While Netflix’s original films are often lackluster, their resume of original series is one of the best in the business, second to probably only HBO. Their TV dramas, most notably ‘Squid Game,’ ‘The Witcher,’ and ‘Shadow and Bone,’ have been nothing short of quality television. Their sitcoms have also been thoroughly enjoyed by many, whether it’s ‘Grace and Frankie’ or ‘Emily in Paris.’ They also turn out some great animation stories in ‘Arcane’ and ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.’ So while it may have been ironic that Netflix chose to greenlight a series based on the company it put out of business, the idea certainly sounded interesting. In one of those “it’s about time” moments, Netflix has announced that they’re teaming up with developer The Coalition to produce a feature film adaptation of Gears of War. Not only that, but the film will be followed by an adult animated series “with the potential for more stories to follow.”
Netflix made the announcement via Twitter on the 16th anniversary of the Gears of War franchise, which started off on the Xbox 360 way back in 2006.
The road to get Gears of War in film form has been a long one. Six years ago, The Coalition had reached a deal with Universal to produce a film adaptation of the series. Obviously, that deal with Universal never came to fruition. That was also after an attempt made in 2013 by producer Scott Stuber to get an adaptation going that also ended up fizzling out.

All good things must come to an end, but fans of the Netflix series "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" were probably hoping that it wouldn't happen quite so soon. The animated series from CD Project Red and Studio Trigger was set in the same world as the "Cyberpunk 2077" video game and became such a hit that the anime actually helped sales of the video game, which had a notoriously troubled launch. I absolutely loved "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" and would love to see more animated stories from the same world, but I can't quite imagine how they would continue the story of David, Lucy, and the rest of the Edgreunners. Things come to a pretty conclusive ending, but some fans might have held onto hope for more.
In an interview with Famitsu, translated by Video Games Chronicle, CD Projekt Red community manager Satoru Honma revealed that "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" was meant to be a stand-alone work,...

Netflix has been in the video game space for close to a year and is doubling down.
The streamer, which unveiled its third quarter financial results, currently has 35 games on its service with 55 more games in development.
The latter will also include more games based on its own Netflix IP. Currently, it has games based on series such as Stranger Things, including Stranger Things: 1984 and Stranger Things 3: The Game, as well as Nailed It! with Baking Bash. It also has Exploding Kittens, which it is developing a series for as well as the game.
“Our first year was about establishing our gaming infrastructure and understanding how our members interact with games,” it noted in its letter to shareholders. “With 55 more games in development, including more games based on Netflix IP, we’re focused in the next few years on creating hit games that will take our game initiative to the next level.
