Exclusive: Belgian distribution and production company Belga Films Group is reuniting with award-winning director Jaco Van Dormael to produce The Magician of Auschwitz, which will be his first English-language feature in 15 years after shooting mainly in French.
Van Dormael will direct from a screenplay adaptation by Jacob Marx Rice of Portuguese journalist and writer José António Dos Santos’ twin novels ‘The Magician of Auschwitz’ and ‘The Birkenau Scrolls’, about a Portuguese soldier, Russian girl and Jewish magician thrown together in the horror of Auschwitz.
Dos Santos drew the novels from authentic manuscripts written by members of the Sonderkommando during the Holocaust and found hidden near death camp crematoria post-liberation. They shed light on the harrowing experiences of the members of special command units composed of prisoners who were forced to help run the gas chambers and crematoria.

The movie’s pacing plays a major part in its eventual perception by the audience. It gives the filmmakers the freedom of choice whether to stick to the usual narration or to speed up or, on the contrary, slow down the plot progression to create a special impression and to make their movies memorable.
We can recall the fast-paced Trainspotting (1996) or Fight Club (1999), with both of them becoming cultish features, definitive for the whole generation. However, there is a lesser-known 1990’s movie that is also quick to start and to throw a viewer into the heat of its events, appearing to be a brilliant must-watch.
Its plot revolves around the young Lola, who receives a devastating phone call from her boyfriend Manni. It turns out that he lost 100,000 Deutschmarks that he was sent to bring to his gangster boss, and he begs Lola to somehow find the necessary amount of...

Diane Kruger is set to receive the Golden Eye Award at this year’s Zurich Film Festival. Famed for working with directors including Quentin Tarantino, Wolfgang Peterson and Robert Zemeckis, the 47-year-old is renowned as one of Hollywood’s finest character actresses and is probably best known for her roles as Helen of Sparta in 2004’s ‘Troy’, Bridget von Hammersmark in Tarantino’s ‘Inglourious Basterds’ and Anna in 2009’s ‘Mr. Nobody’. She said: “Thank you Zurich Film Festival for this wonderful recognition. This post contains spoilers for "Fast X."
The "Fast and Furious" franchise is many things: A ridiculous blockbuster franchise with spectacular stunts, a big-budget soap opera where death has no meaning and anyone can be resurrected, a high-octane adventure in which cars are extensions of the characters' bodies, and more. Above all else, this is a franchise about family -- or at least it's become one in recent years.
Every heist movie and every big spy franchise has a crew, a team that grows closer together as the story goes along. But none hold a candle to Dom Toretto and his crew. This is a team that has gone through hell and back. They have lost members only to see them return from the dead, and have become international terrorists, bank robbers, super spies, borderline superheroes, and even astronauts.

Season 2 of last summer’s hit breakout series “The Bear” is set to premiere on Hulu on Thursday, June 22. After a tumultuous return to his family’s hole-in-the-wall Chicago restaurant, chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) and his staff transform the greasy sandwich joint into a first-class dining experience after he discovers the slush fund his brother left behind. Despite having the extra money to make his dreams a reality, the future proves to be both a personal and professional challenge for Carmy and the crew.
Watch the trailer for Season 2 of “The Bear”:
Beginning on June 14, the new series continuation of the beloved film “The Full Monty” arrives on Hulu. It’s 25 years later and the men and women of Sheffield, England, are in reboot mode, navigating life and family. The original 1997 movie focused on a group of down-on-their-luck, blue-collar men who put on a strip show to make ends meet.

This article contains major Fast X Spoilers.
For a franchise where no one seems to ever stay dead, things sure look deadly serious at the end of Fast X. Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and his young son sit beneath a Portuguese dam with mere seconds to think before its massive waters and debris crash on their heads; the B-team of Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Ludacris), Han (Sung Kang), and Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) appear to have almost certainly perished in a car wreck; and even the return of Gal Gadot’s Gisele does little to soften the sting of Uncle Jakob’s (John Cena) noble sacrifice.
In its final moments, Fast X appears to reach for the sudden shock of seeing your favorite superheroes turn to dust in Avengers: Infinity War. Whether it actually pulls that off with excitement (as opposed to bafflement) is open for debate, but either way...

I hope you’re ready to strap in for physics-defying stunts, ridiculous car chases, and ice-cold Coronas, because Fast X is now playing in theaters. Chad Stahelski's "John Wick: Chapter 4" was such a massive undertaking that entire side characters, each one worthy of headlining their own action franchise, merely drift around the margins, waiting to contribute to the film's central fight scenes. There is the blind assassin Caine (Donnie Yen), who can locate his victims by sound and by placing motion-activated doorbells around the rooms he intends to fight in. There is Akira (Rina Sawayama) and her father Koji (Hiroyuki Sanada), the people who run the Continental Hotel in Osaka, each one deeply knowledgeable about the ins and outs of the assassin world. There is the Russian mobster Killa Harkan (Scott Adkins), an outsize, cackling villain who cheats at cards, sports golden teeth, and can handily pummel any foes into submission. One cannot accuse the "John Wick" movies of lacking for colorful supporting characters -- but you might be able to say that...

In James Wan's 2015 mega-blockbuster "Furious 7," a car located on the 80th floor of one of the Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi speeds out of the window, crashing through the glass, and into the open air. The car then smashes in through the window of the second Etihad Tower, and skids safely to a halt on the 75th floor. It's an act of cartoonish daredeviltry that is emblematic of the Furious series at large. Looking at "Furious 7," and its two follow-ups, it's curious to ponder that the series started as a mid-budget "Point Break" knockoff about street racers who steal DVD players.
As the series progressed from its humble origins — and became larger and larger in both budget and scale — a recurring ensemble began to form. After a while, the character in the "Furious" series became a sort of superhero team. Indeed, a scene in "F9" saw Tej...

Photo: ‘Mr. Nobody’ The Pinnacle of Nonlinear Storytelling In a futuristic society that has achieved quasi-immortality, Nemo Nobody is the last living mortal on Earth. At 118 years old, Nemo wearily recounts his life to a reporter, who realizes Nemo is contradicting himself with each memory he shares. We are taken through several completely different lives that Nemo could have lived if he had decided to stay with his father or leave with his mother after their divorce. Although many movies have used nonlinear storytelling, ‘Mr. Nobody’ takes it a step further to combine this technique with a multiverse. In each universe, we see a different Nemo whose decisions drastically alter his life. With each scene that mismatches the next, we can slowly put together fragments of each timeline. It takes an astute mind to keep track and catch the subtle nuances of these random sequences and their relation to one another.

Way back in 1998, before Marvel made metaverses a household concept, Gwyneth Paltrow starred in a lovely parallel-realities drama called “Sliding Doors,” in which a woman’s life split along two paths, depending on whether or not her character caught a specific train. At the time, juggling these competing fates was considered to be so demanding that the filmmakers obliged one of the two Gwyneths to get a haircut, so audiences could tell them apart.
Nearly a quarter-century later, our collective cine-literacy has gotten so sophisticated that “Sliding Doors” seems no more challenging than a simple game of tic-tac-toe. But that doesn’t necessarily mean audiences can handle the gnarly three-dimensional sudoku puzzle that is “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a mile-a-minute mind-bender from absurdist duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — aka the Daniels — that argues every conceivable variation of our lives exists in some alternate universe or other, then proceeds...

Two Warner Bros. films of note arrive this month. The James Wan-directed horror tale Malignant premieres on Sept. 10 and is followed by Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho on Sept. 17. The next installment in Adventure Time: Distant Lands (which is kind of like a film series!) is titled Wizard City and opens the month on Sept. 2
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new month of HBO Max releases without some interesting evergreen Warner movie titles. Sept. 1 finds all eight Harry Potter movies returning to WarnerMedia’s streaming service. They will be accompanied by The Goonies, The Evil Dead, Cloverfield, and more. Later on in the month, Mortal Kombat (Sept.

Catherine Steadman, one of the stars of “Downton Abbey,” and the bestselling author of “Something in the Water,” is set to make her screenwriting debut with a TV series adaptation of Jess Ryder’s psychological thriller novel “The Ex-Wife.”
The film will be a co-production between London, Rome and Madrid-based BlackBox Multimedia and Munich-based Night Train Media.
The plot follows newlywed Tasha, who has the perfect house, a loving husband and a beautiful little girl, but has to deal with Jen, her husband’s ex-wife who just won’t leave them alone.
“We think that Catherine’s genuine talent in creating riveting stories, and her unique perspective on the process as both actor and writer will make her on-screen adaptation of Jess Ryder’s bestselling novel what thriller fans have been waiting for,” said Giuliano Papadia, CEO of BlackBox Multimedia.

DC Universe’s next live-action TV series is coming to the streaming service this Friday in the form of Doom Patrol. As you surely know, it follows a bunch of disparate superhumans – most of whom we previously met on Titans – who see their powers as curses more than gifts. And now, this new 4-minute trailer gives us a great taste of the gleefully weird, kooky tone of the show and its eclectic cast of characters.
So, who are the Doom Patrol? Well, first we have Clifford Steele/Robotman – as voiced by Brendan Fraser and played in the flesh by Jake Michaels – a former race car driver rebuilt in a mechanical body after an accident. April Bowlby, meanwhile, is Rita Farr/Elasti-Woman, a former 50s movie star whose skin turned elastic after she was infected with toxic gas. Then you have Matt Bomer, who voices – while Matthew Zuk performs – Larry Trainor/Negative Man,...

Before inheriting the title "Master of Disaster", a perfectly justified honour for his reputation of creating some of the greatest disaster movies of the 1970s, Irwin Allen was also the man responsible for some of the classic TV shows to emerge in the 1960’s. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Time Tunnel, and Land of the Giants have all survived the test of time and become immortalised among the best in terms of cultural importance. However, above all others, Lost in Space (1965-1968) is arguably the series that endured. Very loosely inspired by Johan David Wyss's classic 1812 adventure novel “Swiss Family Robinson”, the premise for the show was fairly uncomplicated and followed the adventures of the Robinson family, a crew of space colonists who encounter a number of strange and otherworldly situations after their ship is sabotaged and thrown off its original course. While most of the actors starring in popular films and shows have considerable talent, it often takes many years to hone the skills it takes to become a critically acclaimed performer. Some actors, on the other hand, seem to develop these skills very young. One such individual is the highly talented Toby Regbo. How can we not talk about family When family's all that we got?—Wiz Khalifa (feat. Charlie Puth), See You AgainWhat a long, strange ride it's been… and still some way to go. As I write, the eighth film in the Fast/Furious series (Ff) is still playing in thousands of cinemas worldwide. I won't concern myself here with the box-office performance of The Fate of the Furious—nor will I attempt synopsis of this or the previous installments—except to note that enough money was taken on opening-day alone to confirm we can expect the ninth and tenth in this prodigiously lucrative Universal franchise to hit our screens late spring or early summer, in 2019 and 2021.Ideally the 10th—and, presuming Vin Diesel's September 2015 comment about "one last trilogy" is honored, final—picture should arrive exactly 20 years after Rob Cohen’s The Fast and the Furious bowed on 22nd June,...

Screen Rant spoke with Kurt Russell recently about his involvement in the Fast And The Furious franchise. Starting with the franchise in the seventh movie as the character Mr. Nobody, he's been a part of the financial zenith of that film series. He commented about his previous reluctance to work on sequels.
"Well, all my life I’ve never been one for sequels and stuff. I’ve done it one time with Escape From La, which was from Escape From New York, which was 17 years earlier. But we live in a different time now. We live in a time where that’s the norm. I’ve never had anything against it, I just think that each time what I think they’ve learned now, is that you can’t just throw a sequel out there because you did good business. You have to go after it to make it even better.

The Fast and the Furious isn’t a franchise that takes itself too seriously. Whether it’s cars raining from the sky or Vin Diesel’s petrolhead Dominic Toretto rambling on about the importance of family for the umpteenth time, Universal’s series has developed a potent recipe of jaw-dropping, physics-defying action sequences and enough testosterone to sink a nuclear submarine.
And even though The Fate of the Furious marked the eighth installment in the franchise, the film’s record-shattering opening weekend – $532.5 million, to be precise, which is just north of Star Wars: The Force Awakens – proves that there’s still an almost insatiable appetite for the Fast and Furious recipe. However, midway through production on F. Gary Gray’s tentpole sequel, tensions bubbled to the fore, after reports emerged that Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson (Luke Hobbs) butted heads on set. The Fast and Furious franchise is a damn interesting one to look at. Who’d’ve thought way back in 2001 that a little film about underground street racing would end up as one of the most profitable action franchises of all time? It was something that could not have been foreseen, and it’s been rewarding to see a series like this pivot from one thing to another when it realized certain aspects of its formula were working. Now, each film seems to have about as many explosions as your average Transformers flick. And it’s awesome.
Before I get started, I think it’s worth mentioning that, like many folks, I grew up watching these movies, from its lowly beginnings to its current iteration. I hated Tokyo Drift, and I was surprised to see its resurgence in Fast and Furious, the fourth film in the franchise. Fast Five was high point for the series,...

Throughout Universal’s engine-revving Fast And Furious franchise, Dominic Toretto’s crew has preached constant themes – family, respect and buckets of iced Coronas. So why does F. Gary Gray’s The Fate Of The Furious shift gears so jerkily? Chris Morgan’s latest script abandons fist-pounding #brotendancies for a bumpier, more handcuffed adventure that’s too reminiscent of blockbuster generics. It’s less fast, and not as furious – albeit outrageous and fan-friendly. Entire scenes seem lifted from Vin Diesel’s xXx: Return Of Xander Cage (like, the whole opening), except without tongue-in-cheek awareness. This is the dark(ish), consequence-first mission the detours into metallic blandness and automobile product placement (drink every time a different company logo enters frame). Torreto’s team goes from grease-monkey Robin Hoods to pistol-gripping anybodies – Dom oh Dom, what have you done?

It's party time for action junkies and auto-erotics. The Fate of the Furious, a.k.a. Furious 8, is a bolt of greased lightning that never lets up on the shake, rattle and hum. Is it as killer good as 2015's Furious 7? Don't get greedy. That thunderously exciting and surprisingly touching blockbuster would have made the ideal capper to the Fast and the Furious franchise that began in 2001. On the heels of 2015’s Furious 7, one of the fastest movies to reach $1 billion worldwide and the sixth-biggest global title in box-office history, comes the newest chapter in one of the most popular and enduring motion-picture serials of all time: The Fate of the Furious.
As evidenced by last December’s trailer debut of the film—which currently ranks as the biggest ever, with more than 139 million views in the 24 hours after its unveiling in Times Square—audiences’ appetite for tales from the Fast & Furious saga has never been bigger, and the franchise has never been more popular or more global. Perhaps it’s the lack of venerable source material, but translating the entertainment factor of videogames — an experience in which the user often repeatedly fails until some enjoyment is ultimately had — has most adaptations feeling like one is watching characters play in God mode,...

There are a multitude of reasons why any film may get unfairly overlooked. It could be a lack of marketing resources to provide a substantial push, or, due to a minuscule roll-out, not enough critics and audiences to be the champions it might require. It could simply be the timing of the picture itself; even in the world of studio filmmaking, some features take time to get their due. With an increasingly crowded marketplace, there are more reasons than ever that something might not find an audience and, as with last year, we’ve rounded up the releases that deserved more attention.
Note that all of the below films made less than $1 million at the domestic box office at the time of posting — VOD figures are not accounted for, as they normally aren’t made public — and are, for the most part, left out of most year-end conversations. Sadly, most...

The story of Jackie Galloway — who suddenly disappeared in 1991 from her apartment in Sarasota, Florida — is equally a mystery and tragedy: While police quickly discovered her body, bound and bloody, it took them much longer to locate her killer and his motive.
The investigation, which is the focus of the next episode of People Magazine Investigates airing Monday, Nov. 21, on Investigation Discovery, featured a shifting cast of possible suspects; evidence of horrific violence; a speculative link to the Gainesville Ripper serial killer, who murdered college students not far away; and a curious connection to the Patricia Cornwell thriller Postmortem about a killer called “Mr. Nobody.

"'What to do with the rest of our lives?' is now the question." Music Box has debuted a new trailer for the film The Brand New Testament from Belgium, directed by filmmaker Jaco Van Dormael who last made Mr. Nobody. His new film is religious parody about a man in Brussels who is apparently God - as played by Benoît Poelvoorde. He lives with his family and the story focuses on his ten-year-old daughter Ea, played by Pili Groyne, who decides to text everyone in the world with their date of death. The full cast includes Catherine Deneuve, François Damiens, Yolande Moreau, Laura Verlinden and Serge Larivière. There's some really wacky scenes in this, but I like the concept and it seems like a totally one-of-a-kind film. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Jaco Van Dormael's The Brand New Testament, from YouTube: God exists! He lives in Brussels,...

After the wildly ambitious sci-fi feature Mr. Nobody (which we named one of the best of the century thus far), director Jaco Van Dormael is back with The Brand New Testament, a comedy which imagines what would happen if God exists on Earth, and he’s not exactly what you might assume he would be. Having premiered at Cannes last year and earning a Golden Globe nomination as well as nearly making the final Oscar cut, it’ll finally arrive next month in the United States and now Music Box Films have released a new trailer.
We said in our positive review, “If you were to take the charm and playful visual language of Jean-Pierre Jenuet’s Amelie and pair it with a blistering satire of religious dogma, the end result would look something like The Brand New Testament, a new film from Belgian director Jaco Van Dormael. His previous feature,...
