Steven Spielberg has been one of the most prolific filmmakers in Hollywood since the 70s. The director has tackled every genre and has shown that he can confidently execute them with conviction. It’s hard to believe that such diverse films like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Color Purple Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, and Minority Report came from one filmmaker.

Over the last century, the small but mighty island Republic of Malta has cemented itself as an appealing global destination for major film productions, with features such as Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator,” Robert Altaman’s “Popeye,” and Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” shooting there. Scott recently wrapped production on the long-awaited follow-up to his 2000 Roman epic, and the country is prepping for the upcoming shoot of the newest installment of the “Jurassic World” franchise.
Speaking with Variety, director and co-founder of Maltese service provider Valletta Pictures, Joshua Cassar Gaspar, said that the requests to film on the island have “come in like crazy” following the U.S. strikes in 2023. “It’s an incredibly busy time. The next two years will be huge for us.”
“The strikes didn’t affect us because the independent productions kept going, and many of us in Malta service TV shows, which were also unaffected,” Gaspar continued.

1993 was a huge year for Steven Spielberg. Ever the workaholic, Spielberg had two major movies hit theaters in '93. The first was "Jurassic Park," which roared into multiplexes in June of that year. Then, in December, came "Schindler's List," Spielberg's Holocaust drama that finally won him a Best Director Oscar. Spielberg loves to work, and he would have other years where he released two films. But making two massive movies like "Jurassic Park" and "Schindler's List" was not an easy feat. The productions ended up overlapping, and the jarring nature of the two projects — one the ultimate popcorn blockbuster, the other a brutal and serious portrait of the Holocaust — ended up taking a toll on the acclaimed director.
After Spielberg finished principal photography on "Jurassic Park," he headed to Poland to shoot "Schindler's List." In Spielberg's mind, the main work on "Jurassic Park" was done. Except, of course, it wasn't.

Have you ever given thought, to which of Steven Spielberg’s works could unite the creative minds behind X-Men ’97 and the very creator of Deadpool? Not to give away too much of the suspense, but it is none other than the dark and cerebral science fiction drama Minority Report.
The film, starring Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell, was so brilliantly shot and inventive that even Deadpool’s Rob Liefeld, who ranked it among his three best Spielberg experiences, tweeted his admiration for it. Liefeld empathized with those who found the film “too dark”, a sentiment shared in his circles at the time of its release.

Yet, in a harmonious agreement tagged with insights and nostalgia, X-Men ’97 writer Beau DeMayo chimes in with a solid “hands down agree”.

Screenwriter and playwright Tony Kushner has defended Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar speech against critics.
While accepting the Academy Award for best international feature for his Holocaust movie “The Zone of Interest,” Glazer spoke about the ongoing violence in the Middle East, saying the Auschwitz-set film “shows where dehumanization leads at its worst. It shaped all of our past and present. Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people. Whether the victims of Oct. 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization — how do we resist?”
The speech has been met with both kudos on social media and dissent in the industry, including an open letter from over 1,000 Jewish creatives and execs denouncing his words.

One of America’s most celebrated writers and one of Steven Spielberg’s go-to collaborators on films such as Munich and The Fabelmans spoke out today on the Haaretz Podcast about the controversy over Jonathan Glazer’s speech after Zone of Interest won Best International Feature Film at the Oscars.
Speaking about protests in the U.S. and their impacts, Tony, Emmy and Pulitzer Prize-winner Tony Kushner expressed surprise at what he called “the blowback after Jonathan Glazer’s really sort of unimpeachable, irrefutable statement at the Oscars.”
Asked if he identified Glazer’s comments, Kushner replied, “Of course. I mean, who doesn’t?”
For context, here is a portion of Glazer’s speech:

1993 was a year of change for filmmaker Steven Spielberg. On June 11, the director's dinosaur thriller "Jurassic Park" was released, making huge amounts of money and, eventually, becoming one of the biggest blockbusters of the decade. On December 15, the director's soul-rattling Holocaust drama "Schindler's List" was released, inviting a wave of praise and astonishment from audiences. It went on to win seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Up until June of 1993, Spielberg was perhaps best known for his action blockbusters and adventure films ("The Color Purple" and "Empire of the Sun" notwithstanding). After December 1993, Spielberg would become seemingly less interested in genre films and far more interested in movies aimed squarely at adults. He didn't seem terribly invested in his 1997 sequel to "Jurassic Park," titled "The Lost World," and, indeed, Spielberg's adventure films released since then have all felt distant and automatic, especially when compared to his more politically-bent historical dramas like "Munich,...

Fremantle revealed Wednesday that it has secured worldwide distribution rights, outside of German-speaking territories, to the premium fantasy drama “Hagen” — a working title — from Constantin Film. The deal includes rights to a six-part series and a feature film for theatrical release. Rtl Group holds German streaming and free TV rights.
Fremantle will be showcasing “Hagen” as one of its key scripted drama titles at Fremantle Presents this Friday as part of London TV Screenings.
“Hagen,” which is based on Wolfgang Hohlbein’s bestselling novel “Hagen von Tronje,” is a reimagining of the medieval “Nibelungen” folk saga. The story is considered to be one of the inspirations behind modern fantasies such as “Game of Thrones” and J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.”
The show centers on dutiful soldier Hagen and Siegfried, the legendary dragon slayer. Hagen, bound by loyalty to the kingdom, is Lord Commander, ready to serve and stand by his king.

Although he has personally competed for the Best Picture Oscar as a qualifying producer of just four films, Martin Scorsese is responsible for directing 10 of the top Academy Award category’s nominees, including 2024 contender “Killers of the Flower Moon.” This recent improvement upon his total makes him only the third filmmaker in Oscars history to helm a double-digit amount of Best Picture nominees. Including him, six people who were already credited with directing at least one nominee rose higher in the ranks this year.
The previous Scorsese films that vied for Best Picture are 2007 winner “The Departed” (for which he earned his sole directing trophy) and nominees “Taxi Driver” (1977), “Raging Bull” (1981), “Goodfellas” (1991), “Gangs of New York” (2003), “The Aviator” (2005), “Hugo” (2012), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014), and “The Irishman” (2020). The career of director Steven Spielberg has practically defined modern blockbusters, but he’s also been able to craft more personal films as well. Let’s rank Spielberg’s entire filmography from worst to best in a new photo gallery of his 33 theatrical features.
Spielberg’s reputation as a master entertainer came with the release of “Jaws,” his 1975 shark attack thriller. Made when he was just 29 years old, the film set box office records and made the summer safe for blockbusters again. Such following films as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977), “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981) and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982) cemented Spielberg’s ability to create spectacular amusements that brought audiences to their feet.
He later moved into serious filmmaking with “The Color Purple” (1985), which paved the way for his 1993 Holocaust drama “Schindler’s List” (1993). That film swept the Academy Awards, bringing Spielberg Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture.

Screenwriter Eric Roth reveals he’s written a sci-fi script for Denis Villeneuve that is “certainly about eternity.”
We know that Denis Villeneuve has already set his sights on completing his Dune trilogy, so the celebrated director’s attention is most likely focused on grinding the gears of a trilogy-capper irreversibly into motion in the months preceding Dune: Part II's delayed March opening.
However, it seems the filmmaker has been thinking about life beyond Dune, given that the acclaimed screenwriter Eric Roth has revealed that he’s penned a ‘secret’ script for Villeneuve, one that is about “space and time”. Roth was appearing on the A Script Apart podcast when he made the revelation, and while he didn’t give away too much, the project certainly sounded like it belongs in Villeneuve’s cerebral house style, given that he’s already made thought-provoking films such as Arrival and Blade Runner 2049.

Quentin Tarantino is one of the most acclaimed and influential filmmakers of our time, known for his distinctive style, genre-bending stories, and memorable characters. But he is also a man who loves Israel, where he has been living for the past three years with his wife, Israeli singer Daniella Pick, and their two children.
Tarantino recently visited a military base in southern Israel to boost the morale of Israeli troops amid the ongoing conflict with Hamas, the terrorist group that launched a devastating attack on Oct. 7 that killed more than 1,400 people and took hundreds of hostages in Gaza. Guess how many times cinema legends Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg have gone head-to-head at the Oscars?
With 37 nominations between them and five decades of indelible classics, such as the gangster epic “Casino” (1995) and the shark thriller “Jaws” (1975), you might assume at least half a dozen ceremonies have seen both auteurs prominently recognized.
Read: Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Oscars predictions in all categories.
Well, guess again. There’s been only one face-off, and it wasn’t even in the best director category. It was in the 2012 race for best picture between two of their arguably less-talked-about features — Scorsese’s Parisian adventure epic “Hugo” and Spielberg’s World War I drama “War Horse.”
They lost to Michel Hazanavicius’ silent-era drama “The Artist”.
Now, more than a decade later, the cinematic masters might compete against each other for the second time. On top of that, they could be in...

“Killers of the Flower Moon” was the big player at this weekend’s BFI London Film Festival this week, dragging us journalists out of bed at 8 Am on a Saturday morning to see the Martin Scorsese epic. But it’s okay because we were treated to one of Scorsese’s best films yet.
The Apple TV+ release, due out on Oct. 18, stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, who fell in love with Lily Gladstone‘s Mollie, a member of the Osage tribe in the 1920s. Meanwhile, Ernest’s uncle, William King Hale (Robert De Niro), schemed to murder his way to owning the oil headrights owned by members of the Osage tribe. The film has earned rave reviews. Here are the Oscar nominations we are predicting for “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest movie makers of all time, with titles such as “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” “Goodfellas,” and “The Irishman.” The Academy Awards think that highly of him, too. Scorsese has reaped nine Best Director nominations. That tally ties him with Steven Spielberg. Here’s the breakdown of Best Director bids for both of them:
Scorsese:
“Raging Bull” in 1981 — lost to Robert Redford for “Ordinary People.” “The Last Temptation of Christ” in 1989 — lost to Barry Levinson for “Rain Man.” “Goodfellas” in 1991 — lost to Kevin Costner for “Dances With Wolves.” “Gangs of New York” in 2003 — lost to Roman Polanski for “The Pianist.” “The Aviator” in 2005 — lost to Clint Eastwood for “Million Dollar Baby.” “The Departed” in 2007 — Won. “Hugo” in 2012 — lost to Michel Hazanavicius for “The Artist.” “The Wolf of Wall Street” in 2014 — lost to Alfonso Cuarón for “Gravity.” “The Irishman” in 2020 — lost to Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite.

Palestinian-French actress Hiam Abbass and her filmmaker daughter Lina Soualem touch down at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday with documentary Bye Bye Tiberias.
The intimate work takes the mother and daughter back to the Arab village, situated within Israeli borders in the Lower Galilee, which Abbass left behind in the early 1980s to pursue her acting dreams in Europe.
There, they explore the lives and legacies of four generations of women, all marked in different ways by the consequences of the first generation being expelled from the long-time family home city of Tiberias in 1948, on the eve of the creation of Israel.
Abbass’s near-100 credits have included Tunisian drama Red Satin, Moroccan hit Rock The Casbah, Israeli productions The Syrian Bride and Lemon Tree; Syria civil war-set Insyriated, Palestinian dramas Degradé and Gaza Mon Amour as well as parts in Steven Spielberg’s Munich and Jim Jarmusch’s The Limits Of Control.

In 1981, Steven Spielberg admitted that filmmaking was a learning experience ... in what you hate. Spielberg's first feature was "Duel," a horror movie based on a short story by Richard Matheson, and it was made on a budget of only $450,000, cheap even for 1971. He followed that with "The Sugarland Express" in 1973, a crime thriller that he made for only $3 million. Next came 1975's "Jaws," one of the biggest movies of all time, produced with a budget of $9 million. One can already see the pattern at work. Spielberg started small, and his productions only got bigger and bigger over the years. It wouldn't be until "The Color Purple" in 1985 that Spielberg would break out of his reputation as a maker of mere blockbuster entertainments.
Spielberg never set out to achieve that kind of growth. Indeed, hearing him talk about it, Spielberg always wanted to make multiple small, intimate movies in between the gigantic genre pictures.

Currently among Gold Derby’s top 10 films likely to receive Best Picture bids at this year’s Oscars are “The Color Purple” and “Maestro.” What both movies have in common is that they happen to be produced by Steven Spielberg. If they both get in as expected, this would be the first time Spielberg personally received Oscar nominations for two different movies in the same year.
“The Color Purple” follows Celie Harris Johnson (Fantasia Barrino), an African-American woman living in the South during the early 1900s. Spielberg was previously nominated for producing the 1985 film adaptation of Alice Walker‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, which he also directed. This new movie, which is adapted from the 2005 Tony-winning stage musical iteration, is currently in fifth place for Best Picture with 11/1 odds.

No one can deny that Steven Spielberg is one of the most renowned and influential director's in cinema history. From game-changing blockbusters like "Jaws" and "Jurassic Park" to devastating prestige Oscar-winning films like "Schindler's List" and "Munich," Spielberg is a master storyteller who has been turning celluloid into gold for over 50 years (and his 21st century films aren't bad at all). But like every legendary filmmaker, Spielberg had to start somewhere, and a new book from author Laurent Bouzereau will dive into the first 10 years of Spielberg's quickly impressive career.
"Spielberg: The First Ten Years" is coming to shelves in October, and it promises to explore "how a young filmmaker reinvented American cinema within just ten years." The retrospective includes looks at his early made-for-tv film "Duel," his first theatrically released feature, "The Sugarland Express," and the troubled production of "Jaws,...

Beta Cinema has boarded international sales on “Not a Word,” which will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in the competitive Platform section. The cast is led by Maren Eggert, who won the best acting award at the Berlin Film Festival for “I’m Your Man.”
The film is written and directed by Hanna Slak, whose credits include the Slovenian Oscar entry “The Miner,” and was lensed by Claire Mathon, the cinematographer of “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” “Saint-Omer,” “Stranger by the Lake” and “Spencer.”

Kaouther Ben Hania’s heartbreaking Tunisian documentary Four Daughters has taken the top prize of best international film at the 2023 Munich International Film Festival.
The film tells the story of Olfa Hamrouni, a Tunisian mother whose two eldest daughters left the country to join the Islamic State in Libya, never to be seen again. In her exploration of Hamrouni’s story, Ben Hania hires two actors to play Olfa’s missing daughters. The docu-drama hybrid premiered in Cannes, where it won the Golden Eye for best documentary (shared with Asmae El Moudir’s The Mother of All Lies).
Another hybrid feature from Cannes, The Buriti Flower, took Munich’s CineVision Award for best international emerging director for helmers João Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora. The film, made in close collaboration with the Krahô people of Brazil, is a fusion of ethnography and poetic narrative, exploring the group’s tribal memories.

Character actor Richard Brake has a lot of success in his career, racking up almost 90 screen credits over the last thirty years. Those credits include roles in Cold Mountain, Batman Begins, Doom, Munich, and Hannibal Rising, so he started getting cast in major productions with some frequency rather early on. But it’s interesting to see how much more prolific he has gotten since playing The Night King in Game of Thrones and Doom-Head in Rob Zombie’s 31. About half of his credits have come just in the seven years since 31 was released. Next up for him is The Gates, where he co-stars with John Rhys-Davies of the Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings franchises (in addition to over 250 other projects). The film is scheduled to receive a digital and VOD release in the US and Canada on June 27th, and a trailer for it can be seen in the embed above.

From the crime and gangster infested “Goodfellas,” to “The Wolf of Wall Street” centered on vampiric stock market thieves, master director Martin Scorsese’s filmography has often concerned itself with American sins driven by infinite greed.
So it is perhaps no surprise that Scorsese would be the one to cinematically adapt David Grann’s searing true-crime book, “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI,” for the big screen, uncompromisingly illustrating a forgotten chapter of one of America’s original sins: white people’s coldhearted killing of Native American tribes.
In that regard, his “Killers of the Flower Moon” is vast and vital in its scale, purpose and emotional scope, a Western-thriller and ensemble piece that is every bit a Scorsese crime picture as one can dare to imagine.

It may be hard for some to remember now, especially in light of the downright schmaltzy ending the character received in "No Time To Die," but Daniel Craig's James Bond wasn't always given the red carpet treatment as if he were the homecoming hero for the ages. For someone who is the most financially successful filmmaker of all time and reshaped Hollywood, Steven Spielberg is weirdly ignored by the Academy Awards. The man has a cavalcade of masterpieces under his belt, yet he has not won a Best Director trophy since 1999 with "Saving Private Ryan" or Best Picture since 1994 with "Schindler's List," which also happens to be the only film of his to have won that award. More time has elapsed between the release of his first theatrical feature film, "The Sugarland Express," and "Schindler's List" than between "Saving Private Ryan" and today, and in those 24 years, Spielberg has yet to display another Oscar on his mantle.
This year could have been the year to rectify that with "The Fabelmans." When his heavily autobiographical film won the Audience Award at this past year's Toronto International Film Festival, we all thought it was finally going to be his time again.

"The Fabelmans" tells the tale of Steven Spielberg's childhood, how he found his love of movies, and how he eventually got introduced into the harsh world of the film business. Spielberg's first meeting with world-renowned director John Ford is a huge part of his legend. Ford was an incomparable character, and Spielberg knew that whoever would play him had to be just as unique as Ford was. The filmmaker eventually cast David Lynch, and it's hard to imagine Ford being played by anyone else. But, believe it or not, Lynch wasn't Spielberg's first choice for the part — in fact, it wasn't Spielberg's idea in the first place.

As this year’s Academy Awards are doled out, can a statuette on the mantelpiece actually hinder your Hollywood career?
The year is 2006. Competing for Best Picture, the top prize of the 78th Academy Awards, are five films. Ang Lee’s wrenchingly sad queer cowboy love story Brokeback Mountain, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger is a critical favourite.
Capote, a meaty biopic by Bennett Miller, stars the incomparable Philip Seymour Hoffman in the title role. George Clooney’s gripping Good Night, and Good Luck celebrates CBS news reporter Edward R Murrow and an era of journalistic idealism and daring. Munich, directed by Steven Spielberg, is a propulsive historical thriller about the aftermath of the Black Friday terror attack during the Munich Olympics.

The films in contention for the 2023 Best Original Screenplay Oscar are “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans,” “Tar,” and “Triangle of Sadness.” Our odds currently indicate that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10/3) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “The Banshees of Inisherin” (18/5), “Tar” (9/2), “The Fabelmans” (9/2), and “Triangle of Sadness” (9/2).
For the fifth time in six years, multiple original writing nominees also picked up directing and producing bids. In fact, in a historic first, all five movies in this lineup are also in the running for Best Director, with Tony Kushner (“The Fabelmans”) being the only original scenarist not nominated there as well. He shares his writing notice with the film’s director, Steven Spielberg, who now has 22 Oscar bids to his name and has previously won for helming “Schindler’s List” (1994) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1999) and producing the former.

Since becoming one of 21 two-time Best Director Oscar winners with victories for “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1998), Steven Spielberg has been given four shots at following Frank Capra, John Ford and William Wyler as the category’s fourth triple champion. Although he had no luck on his bids for “Munich” (2005), “Lincoln” (2012) or “West Side Story” (2021), academy voters may now feel especially compelled to reward him for “The Fabelmans” (2022), which serves as a slightly fictionalized yet palpably honest account of his own childhood. After a quarter century of only being invited to the Oscars stage as a presenter, the time may be right to put some gold back in the legendary filmmaker’s hands.

The 2023 Oscar nominees for Best Director are Todd Field (“Tar”), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Ruben Östlund (“Triangle of Sadness”), and Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”). Our odds currently show that Kwan and Scheinert – aka the Daniels – are most likely to win (16/5), followed in order by Spielberg (19/5), McDonagh (9/2), Field (9/2), and Östlund (9/2).
Spielberg is the only returning directing contender in the bunch, with eight past bids under his belt for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1978), “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1982), “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1983), “Schindler’s List” (1994), “Saving Private Ryan” (1999), “Munich” (2006), “Lincoln” (2013), and “West Side Story” (2022). He prevailed on both his fourth and fifth outings and shared in a Best Picture win as a producer of “Schindler’s List.” This new notice makes him the first back-to-back directing nominee since 2015 and 2016 champion Alejandro González Iñárritu (“Birdman” and “The Revenant”).
