Back in 2008, a music video landed on YouTube — then still largely in its infancy and mostly dominated by amateur video footage — and caused a bit of a stir, amassing a cult following and 1 million views. More than 15 years on, the video has morphed — extremely slowly — into a full-length feature film.
Chris Dane Owens’ upbeat love song “Shine on Me” was already a catchy slice of rock with some heavy ’80s inspirations. But it was the epic accompanying video — which he made for $70,000, no small sum in today’s music video world — that proved to be the real hit, largely for squeezing into its four minutes practically every clichéd trope and inspiration from popular swords-and-sorcery fantasy entertainment. “The Princess Bride” features prominently, but then there are elements of “Xena,” “The Lord of the Rings,” “The Chronicles of Narnia,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Dungeons and Dragons” and many, many more.

According to Gold Derby’s current combined predictions, “Godzilla Minus One” is the frontrunner to win Best Visual Effects with 17/5 odds at this year’s Oscars. Meanwhile “Napoleon” is in fourth place with 9/2 odds. However there’s a trend with winners in this category that may benefit the latter film.

Following the conclusion of the Dceu with the release of ‘Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom,’ James Gunn has been diligently preparing for the production of ‘Superman: Legacy,’ an upcoming Superman movie that both Gunn and Safran view as the true starting point of the Dcu, despite ‘Creature Commandos’ being released earlier.
Known for his active presence on social media, Gunn frequently engages with fans, addressing questions, dispelling rumors, and offering valuable insights into the anticipated final product. Fans are particularly eager about the cast members, with Gunn stating that over 90% of the cast is already confirmed. Another aspect generating excitement is the selection of technical personnel poised to elevate ‘Superman: Legacy’ into the cinematic masterpiece envisioned by Gunn.
Responding to inquiries on Threads about potential cinematographers for the project, Gunn enthusiastically revealed that Henry Braham, a cinematographer he has previously collaborated with, is set to take on the role.

Ever since the Dceu concluded with the reBit lease of ‘Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom’ Gunn has been working tirelessly to start production on ‘Superman: Legacy’ an upcoming Superman movie that both Gunn and Safran consider the true beginning of the Dcu despite ‘Creature Commandos’ being released first.
Gunn is quite active on social media, and more often than not, he answers fan questions and debunks rumors, as well as provides useful insights regarding what the finished product might be like. The aspect of the movie that fans are most excited about are certainly the cast members (and Gunn claims that he has more than 90% of the cast locked in) and the technical personnel set to transform ‘Superman: Legacy’ into a prime movie Gunn imagines it to be.

Alexander Skarsgard of Succession, The Legend of Tarzan, and The Northman is set to star in the ten-episode sci-fi series Murderbot, which has just been picked up by Apple TV+. Despite sharing a title with a recently released movie from Full Moon and director Jim Wynorski, this project is actually based on Martha Wells’ bestselling, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series The Murderbot Diaries.
The sibling duo of Chris and Paul Weitz (About a Boy) are writing, directing, and executive producing Murderbot under their Depth of Field banner. Andrew Miano is also executive producing for Depth of Field, while David S. Goyer executive produces alongside Keith Levine for Phantom Four. Wells is on board as consulting producer.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Sony had been planning to give director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen a theatrical release on August 25th of this year, which is why we have it listed on our Summer Horror Movie Preview… but we’re going to have to remove it from that list, because Sony has (according to Yahoo) decided to delay the release an entire year. They Listen is now set to reach theatres on August 30, 2024.
They Listen is coming to us from Sony, Blumhouse, and Depth of Field. Weitz is producing the film with Jason Blum and Andrew Miano. Bea Sequeira, Dan Balgoyen, Britta Rowings, and Paul Davis serve as executive producers. Filming was already underway in Los Angeles back in December, so this movie is going to be complete and sitting on a shelf a while before its new release date rolls around next year.
All details about They Listen are being kept under wraps.

The American Film Institute is indefinitely postponing the AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony, dedicated to Nicole Kidman.
In a prepared statement the organization said Monday: “For nearly half a century, the AFI Life Achievement Award has convened artists and audiences in celebration of excellence in the art form. Due to the division in our community at this time, AFI has decided to postpone this year’s event with the goal to offer a celebratory environment worthy of our recipient.”
“Nicole Kidman has enchanted audiences for decades with the daring of her artistry and the glamour of a screen icon,” said Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees when the initial award was announced on November 22, 2022. “She is a force both brave in her choices and bold in each performance. AFI is honored to present her with the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award.”

At the end of Steven Spielberg's 1989 film "Indiana Jone and the Last Crusade," Henry "Indiana" Jones, Jr. (Harrison Ford), his father (Sean Connery), Sallah (John Rhys-Davis), and Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) have escaped the now-collapsed temple where the Holy Grail rests. Breathing a sigh of relief, they mount horses and choose to simply go home, literally riding off into the sunset. It seemed that was going to be the final word on Indiana Jones; it was his last Crusade. But, just like "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare," "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter," "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday," "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," and "The Final Destination," the promise of "Crusade" being Indy's final adventure was broken. In 2008, Spielberg returned for "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," a film that the director seemed painfully uninterested in.

While the exact origin of the trend cannot necessarily be pinpointed, something calcified in the popular consciousness with the release of Gary Ross' 2012 film "The Hunger Games." It seemed that archery was the hippest way for an action heroine to defend themselves.
In "The Hunger Games," Jennifer Lawrence plays Katniss Everdeen, an impoverished teenager living in a dystopian future carefully segregated by class. Katniss enlists in the titular Games, a televised fight to the death. Luckily, Katniss is skilled with a bow and is be able to defend herself from other teen attackers. When people talk about the magic of cinema, they’re usually not referring to monologues. More often than not, it’s the awe-inspiring visuals and imaginary worlds brought to life that give the phrase “movie magic” the ring of truth. None of that would be possible without visual effects, an ever-evolving field that pushes filmmakers like James Cameron and Peter Jackson further and further in their quest to create that special spark.
The films that won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects this century represent the most innovative visual storytelling of the last two decades. Making a movie requires a lot of time, effort, and talent. But more importantly, making a movie requires a lot of money. No filmmaker wants their movie to flop, but none more so than studios whose very existence depends on their releases putting butts in seats. While studios have always put their bets on tentpole movies to produce good profit margins, because of the popularity of superheroes and other big-budget franchises, it seems that studios are putting less focus on smaller films that would ensure they wouldn't suffer too much due to their modest budgets (even if they failed). As budgets have gotten bigger, so too has the pressure for these films to not only break even but to break box office records.
Filmmakers face serious career problems when their movies flop with audiences, as a failure or, worse, a string of failures, could lead to a dream project being squashed.

Chris Weitz went uncredited on his feature directorial debut American Pie, which he directed alongside his brother Paul Weitz, but since then he has earned directing credits on Down to Earth, About a Boy, The Golden Compass, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, A Better Life, and Operation Finale. He dealt with some horror elements in the Twilight movie, but now Deadline reports that he is going all-in on horror with his new film They Listen. They also report that Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant) and John Cho (Searching) have signed on to star in the film.

A theatrical release of Aug. 25, 2023 has been set; it’s the only wide release that weekend. Fans of Philip Pullman's classic book series "His Dark Materials" have been through a lot. Originally published in 1995, the fantasy saga didn't see a big screen adaptation until 2007. Chris Weitz's "The Golden Compass" got mixed reviews and failed to capture the magic of Pullman's text -- plus, it cut out some of the novel's more pointed religious commentary. It's no surprise, then, that fans of the Pullman books can be a bit precious about making sure the latest on-screen adaptation, the BBC and HBO Max series "His Dark Materials," hews close to the text.
Those fans apparently include one of the show's actors himself. James McAvoy spoke with /Film's Jamie Gerber ahead of the show's third season, and explained that on set, he was willing to go to bat for Pullman's novels to make sure the source material was adapted correctly. It’s getting close to the time of year when the executive committee of the Academy’s visual effects branch selects the 10 shortlisted films that will continue in the VFX category race, and among the anticipated contenders, the branch also has some unexpected choices to consider.
While the presumed frontrunner, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, won’t be released until Dec. 16, the sequel to the director’s 2009 fantasy film seems a fait accompli for the shortlist. The work was led by Weta FX and four-time Oscar-winning senior VFX supervisor Joe Letteri (who with Weta also led the work on the original Avatar, which won the VFX Oscar). The Way of Water involves new techniques, including those used in performance capture.

Plot: Based on “The Amber Spyglass,” the final novel in Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy, in the final chapter of this epic fantasy series, Lyra (Dafne Keen), the prophesied child, and Will (Amir Wilson), the bearer of The Subtle Knife, must journey to a dark place from which no one has ever returned. "His Dark Materials" has finally come into its own. It took a few stumbles and big swings, but the fantasy series has reached the heights that it was reaching for throughout its first and second seasons — and it only took a little divine intervention.
"His Dark Materials" was always a show that looked before it leapt — perhaps a fitting trait considering its notoriously brash heroine, Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen). It was eager to leave behind the YA trappings of "The Golden Compass" with its first season, to the detriment of the show's pacing and its own protagonist's character arc, with a vast scope and crowded ensemble threatening to overshadow poor Lyra. It was eager to establish itself as an adult fantasy show in the wake of the end of "Game of Thrones," to the detriment of the story's own inimitable qualities. And it was eager to give more screentime to its biggest star James McAvoy,...

From the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to Everything Everywhere All at Once, viewers are fascinated by the multiverse. When the mirror breaks and possibilities spin off into space, who will you be? What do other versions of yourself and your world say about the real world?
Science fiction and fantasy books have a long history of multiverses. In frilly YA frivol “The King’s Daughter,” Louis Xiv (an awkwardly bewigged Pierce Brosnan) orders a mermaid captured and brought back to Versailles, so that he might sacrifice the creature during a solar eclipse and attain eternal life, it takes just a few minutes for such an amazing feat to be accomplished. But haste is hardly the order of the day with this quasi-historic fairy tale, which follows that thrilling opening with royal balls and cross-country horseback rides, courtly intrigue and plentiful costume changes — a girly dream of the French monarchy, for which would-be audiences have been obliged to wait a quarter-century.
The well-liked book on which it’s based, Vonda N. McIntyre’s “The Moon and the Sun,” was published in 1997, and discussions began almost immediately about an adaptation. The film focuses largely on what happens after the mermaid reaches France, and the Sun King (played by Brosnan with...

Remember the filmmaking brothers Paul Weitz and Chris Weitz? Their career together started strong with a box office smash American Pie (1999) and a well-loved modest hit About a Boy (2002). The brothers soon went solo as directors though they kept working together, producing and what not. Their subsequent work didn't capture the zeitgeist in the same way though there were sure-fire sequel hits a troubled attempted franchise (The Golden Compass) a few well received smaller pictures and an award winning TV series (Mozart in the Jungle). Their next project, their first co-directing gig in ages will be a biopic of their Mexican film star grandmother Lupita Tovar (pictured left) and it sounds just great...

Exclusive: Oscar and BAFTA-winning VFX firm Framestore is consolidating its film and TV divisions in line with growing demand for episodic content.
Both departments at the UK firm will be brought under one banner, one pipeline and a new leadership structure. The company’s episodic work is being headed by recent BAFTA winner James Whitlam (His Dark Materials).
Whitlam is working alongside Michelle Martin, Head of Business Development, Episodic, and reports to Fiona Walkinshaw, Framestore’s Global Managing Director, Film. As they expand Framestore’s episodic offer, Whitlam and Martin will work closely with the company’s studios in London, Montreal, the U.S. and India, in a bid to give clients access to Framestore’s global talent pool as well as a range of national and regional tax incentives.

It’s 2006. James Bond, as rendered in this particular iteration by franchise newcomer Daniel Craig, is on a train to Montenegro as he prepares for his upcoming mission: a poker tournament, where he will compete against the notorious private banker and criminal mastermind known as Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen). However, there’s one factor Bond hasn’t taken into account, and it’s the well-dressed woman in a business suit who elegantly sits herself across from him in the train car. But Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) isn’t merely the agent to the British Treasury that she asserts herself to be — over the course of the story she’ll become the first woman that Bond truly, deeply gives his heart to, as well as the first one to subsequently break said heart. Hers is a role that demands assertiveness and vulnerability, a captivating beauty with a keen mind, and someone...

The cast of James Wan’s Aquaman was largely comprised of rising stars on the way up the Hollywood ladder like leading man Jason Momoa and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, balanced alongside veteran character actors that you wouldn’t exactly call A-listers including Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe and Temuera Morrison. In fact, the biggest face in the cast in terms of sheer fame and name value was comfortably Nicole Kidman.
The actress is known for tackling weighty dramatic work, which has seen her gain a reputation as one of the most talented performers of her generation, and her trophy cabinet is packed to the brim with an Academy Award, five Golden Globes, two Emmys and a Screen Actors Guild award to name but a small few.
In the 23 years between Batman Forever and her next appearance in a DC Comics adaptation, 2007’s The Golden Compass was the only big budget blockbuster she’d starred in.

Looks like HBO is committed to adapting Philip Pullman’s full trilogy: His Dark Materials has been renewed for a third and final season, TVLine has learned.
The fantasy series’ second season concludes Monday, Dec. 28, at 9/8c. Season 1 dealt primarily with the events of Pullman’s The Golden Compass and centered on the adventures of Lyra, a little girl living in a universe similar to our own. Season 2 has chronicled the events of The Subtle Knife, Book 2 in Pullman’s three-novel set, which follows what happens as Lyra and a boy named Will are pursued by both friends and foes between parallel universes.

Hollywood accounting ledgers are packed with presumptive film franchises that, owing to fickle audiences (and cinematic flaws), barely started (Eragon, The Golden Compass) or never finished (The Chronicles of Narnia, Divergent).
As it does with all things entertainment, TV has been picking up the slack. His Dark Materials is chugging along at HBO and the BBC, Chronicles of Narnia has had a TV series in development at Netflix for a while and, after failing on the big screen, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events was reconceived at Netflix to general acclaim.
