Underwater cinematographer Peter Zuccarini has worked on some of the biggest movies of all time and swam with sharks (“Into the Blue”) and crocodiles (“The Motorcycle Diaries”) to get his shots, so one might think that a modest character study about a 60-year-old swimmer trying to fulfill a youthful ambition wouldn’t have anything new to offer him. Yet according to Zuccarini, telling the true story of Diana Nyad (Annette Bening) and her 110-mile swim between Cuba and Florida in Netflix’s “Nyad” offered him satisfaction unlike any he had ever experienced on set.
“Watching the movie I was thinking to myself, ‘I have never done this before,'” Zuccarini told IndieWire. “I’ve never been able to move a camera around someone so closely.” Indeed, one of the great strengths of “Nyad” is the intimate access that it gives the viewer to Diana’s emotional experience in the water,...

Kylie Minogue’s Tension may be the Australian pop singer’s first non-themed album in nearly a decade, but an unambiguous sonic thread links all 14 of its songs. From “Things We Do for Love,” perfect fodder for a top-down cruise along the Pch, to “You Still Get Me High,” which sounds like a cut from an imaginary Molly Ringwald rom-com, Minogue is fully immersed in the glory of the ’80s. Even the album’s lead single, “Padam Padam,” is an invasive earworm that feels like it could be a cover of a Reagan-era pop hit.
As is her wont, Minogue opts to home in on the fluffier sounds and sentiments of the decade of greed. “Hold on to Now” and “Story” are lightweight but anthemic, in the vein of past hits “All the Lovers” and “Into the Blue.” “We’ll be dancing forever/Floating on this feeling together,” Minogue...

Almost 20 years after recording the follow-up to their beloved 2003 album Ghetto Pop Life, Danger Mouse and Jemini have shared their long-shelved Born Again.
Originally released on September 9th, 2003, Ghetto Pop Life marked Danger Mouse’s first official album released on a record label. He went on to work with the likes of Mf Doom, CeeLo Green, The Shins’ James Mercer, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O, but before that, he and Brooklyn rapper Jemini recorded Born Again.
A press release describes the unreleased record as more introspective than the duo’s braggadocios debut, but lead single “Brooklyn Basquiat” still has Ghetto Pop Life’s scrappy quality. “I made a few records but I’m still struggling,” Jemini admits, though moments later, he spits, “The issue that I’m trying to address in this song/ Is how a n**** stay fresh this long.” Complete with a flute melody and an interpolation of The Notorious B.

Paul Walker enjoyed a lengthy career in Hollywood that carried him through various roles in several unique movies before his unfortunate death in 2013 at just 40 years old. Fans likely remember him best as Brian O'Conner in the "Fast and Furious" franchise, but the talented and handsome actor also appeared in critical hits such as "Pleasantville," "Joy Ride," and Clint Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers," and served as executive producer on the films "Vehicle 19," "Hours," and "Pawn Shop Chronicles." He even enjoyed a guest spot on National Geographic's "Expedition Great White" in 2009.
In his youth, Walker popped up in a variety of high-profile TV shows, among them "Highway to Heaven," "Charles in Charge," "Who's the Boss," and "Touched by an Angel," before making the leap to schlocky B-movie horror films such as "Tammy and the Rex," opposite Denise Richards, in which his character's brain somehow lands inside a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s Murina has garnered her a DGA nomination for first-time feature — an honor she also won at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. That’s in large part because of her willingness to face her greatest fears in the name of her art. “I’m terrified of the water,” she says. “I needed to make a movie underwater, because I really wanted to tap into the fear. It’s important to include your fears in your work.”
A coming-of-age story, Murina follows Julija, a teenager living on a remote island in Croatia with her domineering father and subservient mother. When her dad’s wealthy friend Javier (Cliff Curtis) comes to stay with the family, tensions rise as he offers Julija a possible exit out of her abusive household.

After finding mainstream success with "The Fast and The Furious" in 2001 and its sequel, "2 Fast 2 Furious" in 2003, Paul Walker went through a strange time in his career. The Southern California native tried to capitalize on his image with 2005's "Into the Blue," which flopped about as bad as a movie can flop at the box office. And so Walker turned to director Wayne Kramer.
Having caused a considerable stir with his previous effort, "The Cooler," the director doubled down on the whole dark, disturbing thing with his next project. "Running Scared" was an intense, violent, and strangely haunting crime thriller that resurrected the rawness of similar crime outings from the 1970s. Showcasing a grim desaturated look that heightened its overall sense of doom and seediness, "Running Scared" was an outlier at a time when the adult demographic was seemingly being ignored by mainstream films.

Underwater director of photography Peter Zuccarini first ingratiated himself to “Avatar: The Way of Water” director James Cameron by finding a straightforward solution to a difficult problem in their first interview. The director and his team had been wrestling with how to shoot performance capture underwater when the bubbles from scuba gear interfered with the markers on the actors’ bodies and faces. “He had been working on all these incredibly interesting technological solutions,” Zuccarini told IndieWire, “but when he explained to me that the actors would be training to do long breath holds so that they could perform underwater I said, ‘Well, if the actors are doing breath holds why don’t we do breath holds with them and avoid the limitations of technology? We’ll just assemble a team of world-class freediving cameramen.’”

Kate Bosworth didn’t let early 2000s Hollywood crush her ahead of her big break in “Blue Crush.”
The actress reflected on her breakout role and easily what could have been a bikini-clad “Girls Gone Wild” parody of a sports surfing film.
“I was reading a lot of scripts in 2001, and the parts for women were certainly not multidimensional,” Bosworth told Vulture. “The ones that were exhibiting a lot of depth were quite competitive, and I was a ‘no one’ at the time. Being a young blonde girl, there were a lot of roles that were stereotypical bitchy, dumb, or vapid. Not getting roles wasn’t frustrating because that’s the name of the game, but the stereotypes felt disappointing.”
She added, “If you remember the early 2000s, they could be pretty cruel for young girls, so I was feeling a little dejected.”

With a Danger Mouse beat packed with dusty, clattering drums and the relentless thrumming of some uncanny synth or sample, “Strangers” boasts the perfect raw palette for Black Thought, Rocky, and Run the Jewels’ El-p and Killer Mike. In a statement, Run the Jewels said, “We...

Amazon Prime Video is ringing in the month of July with a smorgasbord of new titles, from “House of Gucci” (previously available to purchase or rent on Amazon Prime Video) to classic films like “Clueless,” “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “Yentl.” Apart from the Lady Gaga-starring crime drama, which becomes available to stream on July 2, most other titles will join the platform on July 1.
The streamer is also debuting a handful of Amazon originals this month. The comic book series adaptation “Paper Girls” will hit the streamer at the very end of the month. “Warriors on the Field,” a documentary about Indigenous players in the Australian Football League, premieres July 8. Indie drama “Don’t Make Me Go” and coming-of-age series “Forever Summer: Hamptons” debut July 15, followed by the Billy Porter-directed “Anything’s Possible” and the boxing feature “Prizefighter” on July 22.

Filmed in coastal sections of Croatia, in Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović‘s Cannes selected Camera d’Or winning debut the choppy waters of the Adriatic Sea are surprisingly less of a menace than the dry land above. You see, what lurks below the surface can sometimes offer more comfort, more protection, and floating in the deep blue tends to position all in an equal footing.
Expanding on the principal character and ideas found in her 2017 short, Into The Blue, the ship decks, dinner table set-ups and the courtyards found in the exquisitely designed Murina are lieus where raw emotions are in full view and allow for the past, the shared burdens and failures to be oh … so ever-present.…...

Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s debut feature, Murina, is set on a Croatian island, where the adolescent protagonist Julija (Gracija Filipovic) usually fishes underwater with her father Ante (Leon Lucev). The fact that Julija usually observes the young people who have fun near her indicates an entire world is out there, waiting to be explored. Once the wealthy Javier (Cliff Curtis) – an old acquaintance of Ante and his wife Nela (Danica Curcic) – makes his appearance as he might invest in land, the main family’s reality surfaces. Ante’s repressive actions towards the women in his life become more nasty. Javier and Nela are evidently...

Directorial debuts rarely arrive as fully formed as Murina, Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s riveting Cannes Camera d’Or winner that follows a coming-of-age journey of liberation and rebellion. Led by Gracija Filipović in a revelatory performance, the Croatian drama bursts with tension in every frame, following a love triangle-of-sorts set against a cruelly domineering patriarchal figure.
Ahead of this Friday’s release I spoke with the Croatian writer-director about working with legendary cinematographer Hélène Louvart, leaving things unsaid, collaborating with executive producer Martin Scorsese, the important motif of water, and much more.
The Film Stage: Murina draws from your 2017 short Into the Blue, also starring Gracija Filipovic, but reframes that story. Can you talk about what you learned making that short and its connection with this feature?

Two is the magic number when it comes to Prime Video’s list of new releases for July 2022. While Amazon’s streamer is bringing many library titles to the mix this month, it has two original TV shows and two original movies of note.
Prime Video kicks off the month with The Terminal List on July 1. Though everything about that name screams “Movie” to me for some reason, the Chris Pratt-starring action property is actually a series. Pratt will portray James Reece, a Navy Seal who returns home after his team is ambushed on a covert mission only to discover that the threat might still persist. Then Prime Video closes out the month with Paper Girls on July 29. This adaptation of a Brian K. Vaughan comic is a sci-fi yarn about a group of young paper delivery girls confronting a temporal anomaly.

Broken Bells — the duo of Brian Burton (a.k.a. Danger Mouse) and Shins frontman James Mercer — are back with a new song, “We’re Not in Orbit Yet…” The track will appear on the duo’s upcoming album, Into the Blue.
“We’re Not in Orbit Yet…” finds Broken Bells blending some folky, acoustic undertones with an array of spaced-out synths, creating a vibe that feels at once retro and futuristic. The song’s music video — directed by Johnny Chrew — matches that sonic vibe with grainy footage of Broken Bells...

An eel will eat its own skin to survive. So what would a teenage girl — a similarly slippery force of nature — be willing to do for her freedom?
Director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović helms the coming-of-age story and 2021 Cannes Camera d’Or winner “Murina,” which opens in select theaters July 8, as distributed stateside by Kino Lorber. Executive-produced by Martin Scorsese and featuring cinematography by “The Lost Daughter” and “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” director of photography Hélène Louvart, the lush family drama is a captivating Croatian tale of mother-daughter jealousies, outdated patriarchal powers, and adolescent angst. Watch the trailer for the film, exclusively on IndieWire, below.

Winner of the prestigious Camera d’Or at the 20201 Cannes Film Festival, Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic’s début feature film, Murina, was named Best Film at the Sarajevo and São Paulo film festivals and was a hit with the audience at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival. It follows a teenage girl, Julija, whose longing for a better life becomes acute during a visit from her father’s wealthy foreign friend, with whom he is trying to make a business deal. Frustrated by her father’s controlling ways, she tries to persuade his friend to take his place in her family, but adult motives are not as simple as they appear. A testament to her fearless nature and boundless determination, Croatian-American filmmaker Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović was nine months pregnant when she traveled from New York to present her feature debut “Murina” at the Cannes Film Festival.
At the end of the festival, Kusijanović tool a 12-hour road trip with her husband to her homeland in Croatia, where she gave birth to her first child Petrus, right before scooping Cannes’ Golden Camera award with “Murina,” a double feast which earned her newborn son a lifetime festival accreditation.
Eight months later, she sat with Variety to tell us how her life has changed since winning the coveted award and looked back at her journey getting there. Vibrant, bright, restless and forceful like her first feature “Murina,” Kusijanović hasn’t wasted any time. She’s already well advanced on her sophomore outing, a daring English-language film which she co-wrote with Yinuo Wang (“90 Days”) and will shoot in Mexico.

Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights for Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s debut feature “Murina” which won the Golden Camera Award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Executive produced by Martin Scorsese, with Hélène Louvart (“The Lost Daughter”) as cinematographer, “Murina” will play on opening night of the First Look Festival at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York.
“Murina” is a tense and sensual tale about a restless teenager, Julija, whose urge to break free from her oppressive father and isolated existence in coastal Croatia is triggered by the visit of a family friend.
Variety‘s Jessica Kiang wrote in her review that “If Patricia Highsmith had ever written a coming-of-age story set on the rocky, clear-watered Croatian coastline, it might have looked a lot like Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s bright, brooding debut.”
The movie also boasts a breakthrough performance by Gracija Filipovic, a promising young...

One of the hottest under-the-radar titles to emerge out of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival was Dubrovnik-born filmmaker Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s feature debut “Murina.” The film came to the Directors’ Fortnight with the imprimatur of executive producer Martin Scorsese and came out winning the Camera d’Or, the festival’s top prize for a first feature. With those recommendations, it’s baffling to find about a young woman’s blossoming sexuality under the spell of her mother’s old flame.
“Murina” sticks to familiarly opaque arthouse beats despite a dazzling symphonic opening sequence. And what an arresting sequence that opening is: In the capable hands of cinematographer Hélène Louvart, the film fades into an underwater shot of a rippling, cyan Mediterranean surface. It’s set to a stir of strings(from composers Evgueni and Sacha Galperine) that build toward a moment that feels like a cinematic overture. We then see two people,...

In an industry which is still largely grappling at putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to empowering female film directors, there will always be something encouraging about seeing a first-time female director debut her work at an international film festival. But when you meet writer-director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović, it’s hard to think that her name won’t be one that we continue to see in the director’s chair for years to come. The Croatian helmer, who has spent a chunk of her adult years in New York, is touching down on the Croisette for the first time with her debut feature Murina, which is premiering in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the festival tomorrow.
The concept for Murina was largely inspired by Kusijanović’s short film Into The Blue, which was a huge hit on the international festival circuit, nabbing prizes in Berlin and Sarajevo.

When she was growing up in Croatia, Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović would often spend summers with her grandparents on an island in the Adriatic Sea, an experience “that really informed my childhood,” she says. Years later, as she was pursuing a Master’s degree in film at Columbia University, a simple image came to her: the deep blue of the sea thrust against a summer sky. It would form the backdrop for the island-set “Into the Blue,” a short film that earned Kusijanović a nomination for a Student Academy Award.
With her feature debut, “Murina,” which premieres in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival, Kusijanović returns to the same idyllic, sun-flushed setting, as well as to many of the themes that preoccupied her in “Into the Blue,” which centers on a strong-willed girl raised by a difficult, overbearing father. “We are always drawn to the same dynamics,” she said.

The highlight of this edition will likely be the world premiere of “The Souvenir Part II,” which will mark the first presence of Hogg, an acclaimed British writer-director, at Cannes. As a most unusual holiday season begins, it’s going to be harder for streaming services to demand our attention. With its new releases for December 2020, Amazon Prime is trying its best anyway.
This is actually an uncommonly jam-packed and intriguing roster of content for Bezos’s outfit. The list this month is highlighted by the release of The Expanse season 5 on Dec. 16. The beloved sci-fi series made the jump from Syfy to Amazon last year and things went well enough that it’s coming back for more. That returning show is complemented by another new genre series. The Wilds premieres on Dec. 11 and will follows a group of teenage girls lost (or Lost) on a deserted island.
Amazon’s original movies in December are just as intriguing. Riz Ahmed plays a heavy metal drummer losing his hearing in Sound of Metal on Dec. 4. Rachel Brosnahan stars as a mother...

As the year winds down, streaming services appear to be taking a step back, licking their wounds from this strange pandemic production season, and looking to a hopefully brighter future. This is all to say that Hulu‘s list of new releases for December 2020 isn’t quite its most inspiring batch yet…and that’s Ok.
Hulu’s biggest original title this month is undoubtedly The Hardy Boys. This adaptation of the classic boy detective novels is aimed at younger audiences and will premiere on Dec. 4. Then, near the end of the month, Hulu is bringing a new season of a show that is decidedly not for younger audiences. Season 9 of the very funny and very Canadian Letterkenny arrives on Dec. 26.
Hulu also has some recent movies of note coming in December including Amy Seimetz’s diabolical She Dies Tomorrow on Dec. 4 and children’s movie The Secret Garden on Dec.
