In this week’s episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo grows out his handlebar mustache and puts on a southern accent to discuss “Blood for Dust” with star Kit Harington (“Game of Thrones,” “Eternals”). The movie follows a struggling salesman with a troubled criminal past who is pulled back into a string of crimes by a former colleague, leading to a trail of blood…and dust.

Ready to head back to the rotten, filthy, violent cesspool that is Gotham? "Joker 2," aka "Joker: Folie à Deux" is the sequel to the box office smash "Joker," which saw Joaquin Phoenix win an Oscar for his dark-n-gritty take on the Clown Prince of Crime. Director Todd Phillips drew inspiration from Martin Scorsese pics like "Taxi Driver" and "The King of Comedy" to tell a moody, violent, very R-rated take on Batman's arch nemesis. The end result broke box office records and earned both praise and scorn. Some critics were impressed with what Phillips had conjured up, while others were downright offended. Audiences, however, turned out in droves, resulting in a film that grossed over $1 billion (with a b).
While "Joker" felt like a pretty self-contained movie that didn't warrant or need a sequel, those box office returns were too good for Warner Bros. to ignore. Phoenix, for his part,...

How does an “A” CinemaScore and 4 1/2 star PostTrak movie with a major star and a dog underdeliver at the box office?
The adventure sports-charged, doggie-with-a-heart title Arthur the King from Lionsgate had no chance of winning a crown this weekend with an $8M-$10M projection. However, many expected this well-received movie to come at the top of expectations. It did not with a $7.5M opening.
Also, the misfiring of “A” CinemaScore, mid-budget movies at the box office is becoming a trend.
Arthur the King‘s underperformance had to do with the fact that it looked ripe for streaming by today’s standards and not theatrical, right? That’s why people didn’t show up? Yeah, but that’s not 100% of the reason.
True, stars need to have a come-to-Jesus with themselves when making streaming movies in conjunction with theatrical titles: Do you water down your marquee image by making yourself available for free at home?...

Mark Wahlberg, the veteran actor who once went by the name of Marky Mark, has suffered a recent grave injury. With the recent release of Wahlberg’s adventure film Arthur The King, it’s time to head back a little in time and go to the first day of shooting the film.
As per the reports, the Ted actor suffered a severe knee injury. After the medical reports came, Mark Wahlberg decided to push through the pain, and instead of undergoing the medical surgery (as the doctor had suggested), the actor tore through the pain!

“Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Dune: Part Two” are both putting up strong holds in North American theaters, staying ahead of Lionsgate’s new based-on-a-real-dog drama “Arthur the King,” which earned $3 million from 3,003 locations on its opening day.
The Mark Wahlberg vehicle is expected to earn south of $8 million heading into the weekend, which would be good for bronze on domestic charts. It’s a solid place to start for the drama, which carries close to a $20 million production budget and boasts a stellar “A” grade from audience survey firm Cinema Score. (Reviews have been mixed.) As a canine comparison, the Channing Tatum-starring “Dog” from United Artists opened to $14 million back in February 2022 before more than quadrupling that with a $61 million total. Lionsgate will hope that “Arthur” can strike a similar chord with audiences.

Plot: An adventure racer adopts a stray dog named Arthur to join him in an epic endurance race.
Review: I was unaware of the true story of Arthur The King initially but after being subjected to the trailer about 9000 times over the course of the past few months, I felt like I knew it well. It looked like your typical inspirational movie. Or as my nephew knows it: the dog movie. Because it’s hard to categorize this as anything else. Sure, there’s adventure racing but this dog is a full-blown character here and takes center stage in the narrative. And it goes about how you would expect.
Arthur the King follows Mikael Lindnord (Wahlberg) and his team of adventure racers. During his last race ever and last chance at completing a life goal, a stray dog joins them on their journey. If you saw the trailer, then chances...

Long gone are the days of Mark Wahlberg movies with an edge. The proudly Catholic family man, who once asked God for forgiveness for playing the scantly clad, dream-or-die porn star Dirk Diggler in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights,” now makes films that either hover around religious agitprop (“Father Stu”), are blandly comforting studio comedies (“Me Time”), or action adventure spectacles with no soul (“Uncharted”). In short, he’s making movies meant to inspire rather than challenge audiences these days.
“Arthur the King” certainly won’t inspire legions of new Wahlberg fans, though here is a movie that props him up as a grade-a hero onscreen. Directed by Simon Cellan Jones, this feel-good globe-trotting odyssey shares thematic overlap with all three types of movies as Wahlberg takes on the real-life role of Swedish adventure racer Mikael Lindnord (here renamed Michael Light and recast as American) who, 10 years ago while...

Credit: Carlos Rodriguez/Lionsgate Just to be perfectly clear, the new film Arthur the King has nothing to do with Camelot or the Knights of the Round Table. But it was still a story that resonated with its star (and producer), Mark Wahlberg. In the film, he portrays the captain of an adventure racing team who picks up a new member along his journey — a stray dog named Arthur. So, as someone who’s a rabid sports fan and an animal lover, Wahlberg said the role felt totally natural to him. Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios has just landed a big sci-fi film package it is setting a global theatrical release for in Mercy, starring Chris Pratt, directed by Timur Bekmambetov and produced by Oscar-nominated producer Charles Roven. I understand the deal closed in the past week with a spring start of production planned.
The project puts Pratt back in business with Amazon, which acquired his Skydance movie The Tomorrow War from Paramount and turned into a big Prime Video hit during the pandemic. He also has the series The Terminal List on Prime. The movie also reps a reunion for Pratt and Bekmambetov, who both worked on the latter’s 2008 Hollywood directorial debut Wanted, a $342 million-grossing, Oscar-nominated blockbuster based on Mark Millar’s comic book.
Written by Marco van Belle (Arthur & Merlin), Mercy is set in the near future when capital crime has increased. The pic follows a detective (Pratt) who...

I don’t know of many Christmas horror adaptations. Sure, I could probably look at the history of Krampus and piece something together but other than that I’m hard pressed so let me know in the comments what I could cover next holiday season. Winter in general has all sorts of movies and stories that they are based off of. The very first episode of this show was all about The Thing and its source material Who Goes There and now in the middle of winter, at least in Colorado, I think it’s time to look at one of the better vampire properties of the 2000s and a great limited series comic. 30 Days of Night was originally pitched as a movie but when it was turned down, the comic came out and put the author’s name on the map. As is the nature of Hollywood, it...

When Nicolas Cage won the Best Actor Oscar in 1995 for his devastating portrayal of a heartbroken alcoholic with a death wish in Mike Figgis' "Leaving Las Vegas," he was 31 years old and soaring into the prime of an already impressive career. He had access to the best screenplays in town and the interest of just about every A-list director. So Cage did what any reasonable movie star would do: he made three of the decade's zaniest blockbuster action movies.
For those of us who fell in love with Cage as the good-hearted punk Randy in Martha Coolidge's lovable 1983 film "Valley Girl," he kind of owed us. Though he's utterly brilliant in "Leaving Las Vegas," Figgis' grimy drama makes "The Lost Weekend" look like "Arthur." It's a brutal, frankly unrewarding ordeal. For close to two hours, we watch Cage's financially/personally ruined screenwriter grimly follow through on his promise to speedily drink himself to death.

It's been less than 15 years since 20th Century Fox tried to leverage the "Percy Jackson" series of books by Rick Riordan into their own version of a "Harry Potter" franchise, replete with well-known adult actors, a group of less familiar child actors, a fantastical setting, and even the director of the first two "Potter" films. But while "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" did well enough to merit a sequel, there must have been some sense of a story that wasn't told as effectively as possible. Now, as we wrap up 2023, and as Disney+ embarks on its fifth year of existence, Percy is back and this time in TV form. "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" (please note the lack of an ampersand in this show's title) goes through the basic story that made up the 2010 film subtitled "The Lightning Thief," but has the benefit and imprimatur of Riordan as...

Chicago – A long time ago (1978) in an America far far away, the one and only showing of the “Star Wars Holiday Special” took place on CBS-tv. Infamously miscast and difficult to watch, the history of the show is chronicled in a new doc “A Disturbance in the Force,” co-directed by Jeremy Coon and Steven Kozak.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
In 1977, “Star Wars” became a cultural phenomenon that single-handedly revitalized a stagnant film industry, and forever changed how films were sold, made, and marketed. On November 17th, 1978, CBS aired the two-hour “Star Wars Holiday Special” and was watched by 13 million people. It never re-aired and is considered one of the worst shows to ever be broadcast on national TV. “A Disturbance in the Force” co-directors Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak combine celebrity insight – including Seth Green, Donny Osmond and Kevin Smith – archival/participant interviews and broadcast history perspective to understand why this show was created.

Russell Brand has been accused of sexual assault by a film extra during the production of “Arthur” in July 2010.
In a lawsuit, filed Friday in the New York Supreme Court and obtained by Variety, a woman — referred to as Jane Doe — said that Brand “appeared intoxicated, smelled of alcohol, and was carrying a bottle of vodka on set” prior to the assault.
Brand, who played the titular role in 2011’s “Arthur,” then proceeded to expose himself to the complainant and in full view of the cast and crew, the lawsuit states.
“The sexual assault happened later that same day when I was in the bathroom. Mr. Brand entered after me and assaulted me, as a member of the production crew guarded the door from outside,” the suit reads. “As a result of the sexual abuse, I suffered and continue to suffer extreme embarrassment, shame, and fear.”

In the pouring rain, upwards of 100 people marched outside of Warner Bros. Discovery’s Park Avenue South building Tuesday afternoon in New York as part of a themed Writers Guild picket that doubled as a promise to unionize east coast animation writers.
“This has been a long, horrible battle trying to get animation writing covered. We are not giving up. I’m really just here to say that when the strike is over, when we have won the contract we deserve, we are circling back to animation,” Susan Kim, WGA East animation caucus co-chair and a writer/story editor behind hits like Arthur, Bubble Guppies, Courage the Cowardly Dog and Clifford the Big Red Dog, told a drenched crowd of picketers. “We are going to be back. We’re going to be better than ever. And we are going to get this goddamn industry organized.”

“There is a word in Korean, in-yun. It means providence or fate,” explains Greta Lee’s Nora by a campfire in Past Lives before demurring that it’s “just something Koreans say to seduce someone.” It’s partially in jest to defuse some of the burgeoning sexual tension in the scene, but she captures a real sense that something about the concept got diluted as it moved from proverb to pick-up line. And playwright turned filmmaker Celine Song reclaims that lost magic throughout her tender and painstaking feature-length debut.
Song hails from New York’s off-Broadway scene, and her theatrical eye for detail in everything from character blocking to sound design translates effortlessly to the language of cinema. As it gently reveals the emotional tug of war between Nora’s long-lost childhood love from Korea (Teo Yeo’s Hae Sung) and her husband in New York (John Magaro’s Arthur...

Alice Rohrwacher is in the Cannes competition for the third time with “La Chimera,” in which “The Crown” star Josh O’Connor plays a young British archeologist named Arthur who gets involved in an international network of stolen Etruscan artifacts during the 1980s.
For Rohrwacher, the film is connected to growing up in Umbria, once the center of the Etruscan civilization. But it’s also the final piece of a triptych on a territory that she started with her previous Cannes entries: “The Wonders” and “Happy as Lazzaro.” Three works that, as she has put it, pose a central question: “What to do with the past?”
Also starring in “La Chimera,” which can be loosely translated as “The Unrealizable Dream,” are Isabella Rossellini as a retired opera singer; Brazil’s Carol Duarte (“The Invisible Life”) as non-Italian woman who intersects with Arthur; Alba Rohrwacher as an international artifacts trafficker; and Vincenzo Nemolato...

Variety writer Jon Burlingame’s new book, “Music for Prime Time: A History of American Television Themes and Scoring,” is published today. The product of 35 years of research and more than 450 interviews, it tells the backstory of every great TV theme dating back to 1949. What follows is an excerpt from the sitcom chapter.
In the summer of 1994, ABC Entertainment president Ted Harbert (in response to a question from this writer at a network press conference) admitted that he was asking his producers to eliminate the traditional main-title sequence – and with it, the musical theme – from all new shows.
“I think it’s an antiquated practice,” he said. “It gives the audience an opportunity to take the little remote and zap around. We really have to find ways to stop them from doing that. The 60-second, or in some cases 90-second, main title that they see week after week, given all the choices they have,...

There was a time that Russell Brand was poised to be the next big comedy superstar. While already a controversial but well-known name in Britain, his role as rocker Aldous Snow in the Judd Apatow-produced Forgetting Sarah Marshall made him a star in North America. He was so popular that he got his own spin-off sequel, Get Him to the Greek, followed by an unsuccessful remake of Dudley Moore’s Arthur, which was critically reviled for stripping away the edge of the original. At this time, Brand, who was in danger of being best known for his personal life thanks to a high-profile marriage to Katy Perry, reinvented himself as a political activist and campaigner. His opinions have been controversial, particularly during the pandemic, but no one can deny that’s he a caring, careless campaigner, to the extent that his career took a backseat. In this episode of What Happened to this Celebrity,...
