Have you ever thought about what it would be like to see Koba from the “Planet of the Apes” reboot film series in other movies? Neither had we here at IndieWire. That was until last week when @jbromovies posted this tweet to X, formerly known as Twitter.
Koba should be in every movie
— joe bro (@jbromovies) May 9, 2024
Little did @jbromovies know what they were in for as what followed was an avalanche of photoshopped masterpieces that embed “Apes” character Koba into every piece of cinema imaginable. From “Challengers” to “The Lion King,” there are literally too many gems to choose from, but IndieWire has put together a collection of the eight best, each featuring a possible arc for how Koba could be inserted into the plot of the film.

Nicolas Cage is going back into the Spider-Verse. Amazon, during its first-ever upfront presentation, announced that Cage will star in “Noir,” the live-action series based on the Spider-Man Noir comic series from Marvel.
Way back in early 2023, IndieWire reported that Amazon was in development on a live-action series inspired by the Spider-Man Noir character, who Cage famously portrayed in the animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” as a grizzled, tortured, black-and-white noir gumshoe who also happened to be a superhero bitten by a radioactive spider. But no cast had been confirmed for the live-action show, and Amazon surprised advertisers by revealing that Cage would step back into the role, making it the first time he’s done a TV series since he filmed a pilot at the start of his career.

A year removed from the start of the WGA strike, we’re just starting to see what recovery looks like. It’s rough: TIFF and AFM were disappointing, and Berlin didn’t offer many appealing talent packages. Projects are taking a long time to come together, if they’re happening at all.
However, Cannes may offer a silver lining: The post-strike market may mean a decline in the annual onslaught of trade announcements for movie projects that go nowhere.
“There’s still a lag in the marketplace where stuff isn’t filming; that’s going to affect what’s going on in production right now,” said one domestic sales agent. “During the WGA strike, a lot of talent had taken a seat and said, ‘What is it we really want from the marketplace? We want a different kind of quality.’ You hear it a lot from actors: ‘We want better movies.

When Roger Corman died on May 9 at age 98, the film world lost one of its great independent film legends. Over the course of his seven decade career, Corman directed over 55 films and received more than 500 producing credits, creating work that helped serve as the launchpad for major Hollywood stars and filmmakers like Peter Fonda, Frances Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Peter Bogdanovich, and Jonathan Demme. And yet, from his first film to his last, Corman remained true to his roots of low-budget, independent, lowbrow-yet-brilliant genre filmmaking.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Corman was smart enough to attend Stanford University studying industrial engineering, but quit his first job in the field after only four days. Looking to go into the film industry, he worked his way up at 20th Century Fox from mail room messenger to story reader. But after he didn’t receive credit for the success of “The Gunslinger,...

Monica Sorelle’s debut feature Mountains is currently screening at the Seattle International Film Festival, with its final screening tomorrow, May 14, and then on the festival’s streaming platform from May 20 – 27. Mountains, the debut feature by Miami-based filmmaker Monica Sorelle, opens with a Haitian proverb: Dèyè mòn gen mòn—behind mountains are mountains. We hear the brutal clamor of a towering demolition crane—perpetually under construction, Miami, where Mountains is set, has no mountains but these—as it rakes the shingles off a roof. The patriarch of the family at Mountains’ center is Xavier (Atibon Nazaire), a construction worker who’s been […]

Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.
“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.
“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

John Leguizamo is looking back on his would-be superhero debut in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and claims that he could have been entangled in a web of a lawsuit against studio Sony over his casting process.
Leguizamo had previously confirmed in 2023 that after Michael Keaton originally turned down the role of Vulture, Leguizamo was about to film in the role. However, Keaton later returned and was cast in the part.
Leguizamo told Business Insider that any other actor “would have sued” the studio for that. “We went through a huge negotiation period, and we had agreed on terms,” he said. “I hadn’t signed a contract, but we had agreed. I think those are suable terms.”
Leguizamo added that he would be open to making joining a different superhero franchise after that experience, perhaps even in the DC. “I would if I was offered The Riddler or some part like that,” he said.

Across her nearly 30-year career, Arnold has crafted a visual language and storytelling framework that centers closeness and familiarity; relationships, challenged by their own intensity or dysfunction, are evoked through intricate details, like beads of sweat on a shoulder blade or the textures of a wasp’s wings. As well as receiving this year’s Carrosse d’Or, Arnold presents her new feature Bird in the official selection, marking her fourth appearance in competition. Her early short films, Milk (1998), Dog (2001), and Wasp (2003)—all snapshots of young women living through personal...

Rebel Wilson is revealing that her “Bridesmaids” paycheck didn’t amount to much after joining the SAG-AFTRA union. The Australian actress said during the “Diary of a CEO” podcast with Steven Bartlett that the majority of her $3,500 salary for the 2011 comedy went to union fees. Wilson was on set for one week of work.
“That was my first job in America,” Wilson said. “I was very lucky to get it. I mean, what an awesome cracker of a movie, to get that but to be paid that little. And basically that $3,500, I then had to pay to the union to join the union. So, basically, I made no money.”
In fact, Wilson actually lost money for her part in the film due to press tour. “I lost money because I had to pay to go to the premiere to buy my dress and everything. So, I lost money doing ‘Bridesmaids,...

“Back to Black” will mark a star-making breakout turn for lead actress Marisa Abela, but portraying late Grammy winner Amy Winehouse came with a symphony of vitriol during production — including critics calling out Abela’s casting.
Abela’s co-star Eddie Marsan, who portrays Winehouse’s father Mitch in the film, told IndieWire that Abela had to endure “terrible” hate from naysayers while filming in the U.K. The real-life Mitch Winehouse even had to defend Abela’s casting when the film was first announced, despite Abela being the first actor formally attached to the project.
“I could tell she was nervous. She’s only a young actor, and it was a massive part,” Marsan told IndieWire during a recent interview. “We had a bond straight away, and so it was terrible when we had to film scenes in London on location in Camden and Soho because even though we had...

This one has seemingly been in the wind for a while as a rumor or wishlist, but it seems to have panned out regardless. “Baby Driver” filmmaker Edgar Wright is in talks to direct Sydney Sweeney in the long-gestating remake of “Barbarella.” The “Euphoria” star has been attached to the project since 2022, but there’s been little movement on it, other than a desire to make it, until now.

Since the writers strike, streamers have been trying to figure out an acceptable new model with which to pay creators. According to a new report, Apple has quietly come forward with what it believes could be the answer.
Bloomberg reported Monday that Apple has met with talent representatives to propose a new compensation model that would pay creators based on a show or movie’s performance, no longer paying a premium up front to buy out an individual’s backend earnings.
Bloomberg obtained a memo that suggests creators would get bonuses based on three criteria: (1) how many people sign up for Apple TV+ to watch your program, (2) the amount of time people spend watching it, and (3) how much your program costs relative to how many people watch it. The creatives behind three best-performing shows could make as much as $10.5 million for a single season of television.
Apple’s plan however isn’t final,...

Edgar Wright is doubling down on iconic-film remakes, potentially directing “Barbarella,” starring executive producer Sydney Sweeney.
IndieWire can confirm that Wright is in talks to direct the reimagining of the 1968 cult film that originally starred Jane Fonda as an astronaut looking to defeat an intergalactic evil force. “X-Men: First Class” screenwriters Jane Goldman and Honey Ross are also in negotiations to write the Sony film.
Deadline first reported that Wright is in the running to direct.
And speaking of running, Wright was recently announced to be writing and directing his long-awaited “Running Man” remake with Sweeney’s “Anyone But You” co-star Glen Powell in the lead. The Paramount feature has been in the works with Wright since 2017, and is based on Stephen King’s 1982 novel and later the 1987 feature starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It’s been almost a year and a half since “Yellowstone” fans have been able to watch a new episode of Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western family drama. And in the time since, a lot of the blame for the delay has been heaped upon the show’s lead, Kevin Costner.
When the show returned for Season 5 in 2022, it was announced that the season would be split in two and labeled 5A and 5B. But despite the initial batch airing in November 2022, the second half still has yet to be filmed. Once Costner began production on his own Western opus “Horizon: An American Saga,” the prospect of him returning to finish the series became more and more tenuous and rumors began to circulate about the show’s fate. Speculation ranged from Matthew McConaughey potentially taking over as a new lead to Costner only being willing to commit to one week of...

Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire, and we’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
By now, you know the score. “Squid Game” is Netflix’s most-watched original series ever. “Stranger Things” has two seasons in the Top 10, and “Wednesday” surged into third place with its debut season. Only these three shows have eclipsed 1 billion hours viewed on Netflix in their first 28 days of release.

Seth Meyers had a relatively short set at Monday’s NBCUniversal upfront, but he still got his shots in. Like this one on NBCU competitor Paramount: “I found $20 on the street this morning,” Meyers said. “Long story short, I’m one of the two finalists [to buy] Paramount.”
We’re not sure the Paramount Global special committee is going to take that offer seriously — kind of like Byron Allen’s. See? We’ve got jokes too.
For real though, the two entities playing tug-of-war with Paramount are 1) David Ellison’s Skydance and 2) a Sony/Apollo Global Management contingent.
Meyers had a few punchlines chambered for his employer. Like this one, on NBCU streaming service Peacock: “Peacock continues to prove that the easiest way to make a billion dollars is to spend eight [billion].”
Peacock is not only (still) losing a ton of money, it has yet to reveal a profitable-by date; even Paramount+ has one of those.

Matt Dillon is taking on the legacy of Marlon Brando for a biopic about the making of Bernardo Bertolucci’s controversial “Last Tango in Paris.”
Dillon portrays Brando alongside Anamaria Vartolomei as Maria Schneider for Jessica Palud’s upcoming “Maria,” which is set to debut at Cannes later this week in the Cannes Premiere section. “Maria” follows Schneider’s life after starring in “Last Tango in Paris” at age 19, during which she filmed an unsimulated rape scene with Brando in 1973 at director Bertolucci’s (Giuseppe Maggio) instruction. The film is based on Vanessa Schneider’s 2018 memoir “My Cousin Maria Schneider,” which was translated by Molly Ringwald.
Per the memoir, Bertolucci did not tell Schneider the full extent of the film’s plot until right before production. Schneider allegedly was unaware of the pivotal scene in which Brando’s character anally rapes her character using a stick of butter as lubricant.

It’s odd to see Netflix start marketing a TV series months in advance. Most of the time, you just get a trailer several weeks before the series debuts. Well, this goes to show you how much confidence the streamer has in “Heartstopper,” as it has just released a teaser for Season 3 of the series, which isn’t even going to debut for another five months.

Cannes isn’t Sundance. The movies on offer aren’t generally genre horror box office surprises or heartwarming indie dramedies, and sometimes they’re not even sure-fire Oscar hopefuls.
But as several sales agents and distributors told us, Cannes is slowly shifting back to being a home for discovery. With the audience now unbothered by subtitles, distributors aren’t just looking for the next “May December” but the next “Anatomy of a Fall.” And when it comes to the package titles on the Marché du Film, buyers are demanding more than the latest Nicolas Cage shark movie.
The sources IndieWire spoke to believe there’s more quality than quantity among this year’s official competition sales titles and the packages being shopped to distributors. And that’s a good thing, even though there are still plenty of hot packages trickling in by the day and buyers already scooping up competition...

Cannes – About 20 minutes after the global press left Thierry Frémaux‘s press conference, they received a news release that Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof had left his country without permission following confirmation of an eight-year prison sentence. Rasoulof’s latest movie, “The Seed of A Sacred Pig,” is in competition at Cannes this year. Less than an hour before this news broke, Frémaux repeated numerous times that he hoped for a festival “without polemics”.

The behind-the-scenes drama of “Mad Max: Fury Road” is legendary, at this point. There have been so many interviews about how Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy were very contentious. Stories about how difficult it can be to work with George Miller, as he is a bit of a perfectionist. On and on and on again. And judging by a new interview with Anya Taylor-Joy, the star of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” the production of the newest entry in the franchise was still incredibly difficult.

Mohammad Rasoulof has fled Iran less than a week after his home country sentenced him to eight years in prison and flogging. The Iranian filmmaker, who won the Golden Bear at the 2020 Berlin Film Festival for “There Is No Evil,” has a film in competition at Cannes this year for the first time: “The Seed of the Sacred Fig.” It’s set to premiere next week toward the end of the festival, with the director’s attendance still unknown. The film, made in secret, was added to the lineup last month. Rasoulof’s fleeing raises the question of whether he will actually be able to attend the festival after all.
In a press statement issued from an undisclosed location, Rasoulof described the repression of his team in Iran while asking the international film community for “effective support.” See the full statement, dated May 12, below.

Writer/director/producer Corey Sherman helmed an ode to his own coming-of-age and coming out story, while honoring both his “big” feelings and physicality.
Sherman’s indie comedy “Big Boys” centers on teenage boy Jamie’s (Isaac Krasner) unexpected crush during a camping trip. While Jamie is elated to spend time with his cousin (Dora Madison), he really only has eyes for her boyfriend and fellow “big boy” Dan (David Johnson III).
Emily Deschanel, Taj Cross, Marion Van Cuyck, Emma Broz, and Jack De Sanz co-star.
Sherman writes, directs, and edits, as well as serves as a producer alongside Allison Tate.
“We made a film about a young man’s unrequited crush to shed light on this extremely common, yet under-examined aspect of queer life,” Sherman said in a press statement. “In most romantic stories, the object of the protagonist’s love eventually returns their affection. A Cannes 2024 acquisitions title already picking up buzz out of the Un Certain Regard lineup is Hiroshi Okuyama’s “My Sunshine,” which IndieWire shares an exclusive clip of below. Writer/director Okuyama won the top prize in the New Directors competition at the 2018 San Sebastian Film Festival for his debut feature, “Jesus,” at just 22 years old and now makes his Cannes debut. The moving coming-of-age drama set in rural Japan premieres later this week, centering on the bond between an ice figure-skating coach and his young pupils who take a particular interest in him — and with life-defining consequences.
Here’s the official synopsis: “On a Japanese island, life revolves around the changing seasons. Winter is time for ice hockey at school, but Takuya isn’t too thrilled about it. His real interest lies in Sakura, a figure skating rising star from Tokyo, for whom he starts to develop a genuine fascination.

Blackout.I had saved my question about Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) until the last possible minute. Larry Fessenden, a disarmingly amiable man with an edge to his self-deprecating humor I recognized only too well, has a new werewolf movie out. As we dug into its story of a lycanthropic curse doubling as a metaphor for an artist’s alcoholism and a town’s despair at a recent solar eclipse, I could see Larry the filmmaker turn into Larry the eager, devoted student and fan under the half-light of the black sun.Fessenden appears in the final minutes of Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), like a harbinger of the future’s unforgiving gaze, as an actor on the mid-century...

It’s been happening for so long now, it’s almost boring, but we still get filmmakers who bash superhero films for being some sort of cancer on the industry. But the comments have really bothered one of the biggest stars in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Hemsworth.

It took Martin Scorsese two years to finish his first feature narrative film, “Who’s That Knocking at My Door.” It began in 1965 as a student short at NYU, then evolved as Scorsese was granted funding from a professor, then sought more from independent investors. It’s a familiar story for independent filmmakers, especially when they’re just starting out, but it’s not a standard timeline for a film production — and Scorsese knew this. For his next feature, “Boxcar Bertha,” he was given the chance to hone his skills at a much faster and more accurate pace, all thanks to B-movie maestro Roger Corman. Corman died last week at his home in Santa Monica, California and in a statement on his passing, Scorsese offers thankful reflections.
“Roger Corman gave me my start in movies,” Scorsese said. “He set the guidelines, and then he gave me tremendous freedom within those guidelines.

It’s been three years since Cary Fukunaga’s most recent film, the 007 feature, “No Time to Die.” Since then, it’s been a bit rough for the filmmaker. He was at the center of sexual misconduct allegations from women in Hollywood. Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
Asked to sum up the new season of “Bridgerton” in one word, showrunner Jess Brownell landed on “cozy.”
“I think the feeling of this season is you’re drinking a hot cup of tea under a blanket and having a laugh,” she told IndieWire during a recent interview. “There’s that familiarity between the characters that just feels easy and cozy.”
Season 3 of Netflix’s smash hit focuses on the love story between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton). Unlike previous installments in which a new person enters the ton and shakes things up, fans are already familiar with the duo and have been particularly excited to watch Lady Whistledown’s main character moment finally unfold.

As Paramount+ works to build a roster of original programming that allows it to compete with the biggest names in streaming, it would likely love to have an international hit on the level of Netflix’s “Squid Game.” With any luck, that hit could come in the form of “Pyramid Game,” a new Korean drama hitting the streaming service this month that appears to combine the intense competition of “Squid Game” with high school teen drama.
Per the show’s official synopsis, Seong Su-ji is a new student at the Baekyeon Girls’ High School. Between the bullies, her studies, and the fight for popularity, high school already feels like a game of survival for Su-ji. But when she’s introduced to a ranking system that chooses class outcasts via secret vote, Su-ji must decide whether to accept her status and its violent fallout or lead an uprising against the Pyramid Game.

But nevertheless, his performance is earning rave reviews and awards voters are known to love a transformation. Goggins spent hours in the makeup chair before almost every shoot to turn into The Ghoul, a lone-wolf wastelander who’s been around for hundreds of years. In an interview with Deadline Studio at Prime Experience, Goggins acknowledged the difficulties of taking on this character physically and emotionally.
“The very first time we did the application [of his mask],” Goggins said, “I asked to be left alone for an hour and a half outside and Jonah [Nolan] came by. I just sat outside by myself and just photographed it like in the sun and in the shade. I was extremely intimidated but excited to see how this Ferrari would work.

It’s a cardinal rule of entertainment obsession that if any movie, TV show, or special explicitly offers you contact information — be it a phone number, a social media account, or an email address — you try to use it.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” may not feature the words of screenwriting power couple Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, but their imprint is all over the reboot franchise and because of the producer credit they fought for when they wrote “Rise,” their names will be too. Having been an agent before he transitioned into screenwriting, Jaffa was well acquainted with the benefits of obtaining producer status and it has since allowed him and wife Amanda Silver to maintain ownership over a reboot franchise many consider to be better than its predecessor. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jaffa said his creative shift away from agency work wasn’t much of a surprise, but that Silver helped him along.

Is Disney about to have its own “Before” series? Just as Richard Linklater’s day-in-the-life romances touch in on the lives of Celine and Jesse at different points in their lives, Amy Poehler would like to see the “Inside Out” sequels explore main character Riley’s emotions at different stages in her aging.
“I just think that they should make these films like ‘Seven Up,’ every couple of years in Riley’s life,” she said in an interview with Empire. “A young adult, and a young mother, and I think a middle-aged person — everyone’s having these very distinct new emotions that are showing up all the time.”
Speaking to IndieWire last month for a sneak peek of “Inside Out 2,” the film’s director Kelsey Mann echoed that idea of “new emotions showing up” being central to how he looked at this new chapter.

Nowadays, when people hear the name Justin Lin, they think big-time Hollywood director with installments in both the “Star Trek” reboot film series and the “Fast & Furious” franchise. But back in 2002, he was just an indie filmmaker with one little-known feature under his belt and not much credit to his name. That all changed with one film, his 2002 Sundance breakout, “Better Luck Tomorrow,” which he also edited, co-wrote, and co-produced with the help of Mr. “Can’t Touch This” himself, Mc Hammer. The film chronicles a group of young Asians in America who start as overachievers but quickly turn to a life of crime and violence. Though not based on a real story, Lin was influenced by the violence he saw in his 20s, such as the Columbine shootings and more directly the murder of Stuart Tay.
