Back when Peter and Bobby Farrelly were still making movies as a team, Jack Black starred for them in one of their big comedy hits, Shallow Hal. He's now set to reunite with the sibling duo for new Christmas film Dear Santa.
The Farrellys are also back together for this one — though Bobby is actually directing, while Peter produces and co-writing the script with his brother and Ricky Blitt.
Dear Santa, which sprung from an original idea from Dan Ewen, focuses on a young boy, who in writing his yearly note to Santa, mixes up the letters and sends it to Satan instead.
This is one that has been on the Farrellys' radar for more than a decade now, originally set up at 20th Century Fox as Dear Satan, but now squatting at Paramount.
The cast also includes Robert Timothy Smith, Keegan-Michael Key, Brianne Howey, Hayes MacArthur, Pj Byrne, Jaden Carson Baker,...

Jack Black is reuniting with Bobby and Peter Farrelly for Dear Santa, a Christmas comedy with a twist of satanic panic! Black teamed with the Farrelly Brothers for 2001’s cringe comedy Shallow Hal, starring Black as Hal, a man who falls in love with a 300-pound woman because of her inner beauty. The crude humor film is a product of its time, featuring Gweneth Paltrow and Jason Alexander. Dear Santa is entirely different and sounds like something worth raising your horns for.
According to Deadline, Dear Santa centers on a young boy who, in writing his yearly note to Santa, mixes up the letters and sends them to Satan instead. Black recently teased the project on social media by posting pictures of himself enjoying an elaborate Christmas display. In the photos, Black poses in the back of a brightly-lit penguin and reindeer standee. The mysterious images sent Black’s loyal fanbase into a frenzy,...

It’s likely not a project we’ll be covering much here on Bloody Disgusting, but Deadline reports today that Jack Black is reteaming with the Farrelly Brothers for a Christmas comedy titled Dear Santa, and the plot synopsis notably hints at some sinister horror elements.
Coming soon from Paramount, “The movie centers on a young boy, who in writing his yearly note to Santa, mixes up the letters and sends it to Satan instead.”
At the very least, we’ll be keeping our eyes on this one…
Robert Timothy Smith, Keegan-Michael Key, Brianne Howey, Hayes MacArthur, Pj Byrne, Jaden Carson Baker, Kai Cech and Austin Post will star alongside Jack Black.
Deadline notes in their report this afternoon, “The current working draft is by the Farrelly Brothers and Ricky Blitt, with the original idea from Dan Ewen.”
Bobby Farrelly will direct, with Peter Farrelly on board to produce.

ABC is starting to whittle down its comedy projects.
The Disney-owned network is not moving forward with two high-profile comedy pilots – Lucy Liu’s workplace comedy, which was formerly known as Kids Matter Now, and Work Wife.
The workplace comedy, which has also had the title Bossy, starred Lucy Liu and came from Better with You creator Shana Goldberg-Meehan, CBS Television Studios and 20th Century Fox TV.
The multi-camera comedy was ordered to pilot in March 2020 but the Covid pandemic meant that it wasn’t able to shoot until much later down the line.
Written and executive produced by Goldberg-Meehan and directed by Christine Gernon (Speechless), the show centered on a diva boss with no patience for working parents who adopts a baby and has a change of heart, casting her mother-of-three assistant as an unlikely mentor and upending the office dynamics.
Former Angie Tribeca star Hayes MacArthur was set as a lead opposite Liu.

Exclusive: My Wife and Kids alumna Tisha Campbell has been tapped as the co-lead opposite Lucy Liu in ABC’s Untitled Workplace Comedy pilot (fka Kids Matter Now) from Better with You creator Shana Goldberg-Meehan. Also cast in the project, produced by CBS Studios and 20th TV, is Australian actress Hayley Magnus (Mapleworth Murders).
Written and executive produced by Goldberg-Meehan and to be directed by Christine Gernon (Speechless) the Untitled Workplace Comedy (fka Kids Matter Now) centers on Devin (Liu), a diva boss with no patience for working parents who adopts a baby and has a change of heart, casting her mother-of-two assistant, Annie (Campbell), as an unlikely mentor and upending the office dynamics.
Radiating warmth and competence, Annie is Devin’s long-suffering assistant. Happily married and the mother of two children, she’s tough at home but hasn’t figured out how to bring that fierceness into the office.

You’ve heard of The Purge, now here’s The Binge, a satirical teen comedy with a similar set-up to the horror franchise, only focused on drugs and alcohol. As such, it has a great comic cast and delivers a number of decent laughs, though there’s also a strong sense of missed opportunity.
Set in the not-too-distant future, The Binge imagines a world where drugs and alcohol have been outlawed, except for one 12 hour period each year, a night known as The Binge. Over footage of real-life drunken incidents, a narrator who sounds a lot like Morgan Freeman (but is actually Josh Robert Thompson) tells us that the science is sound – after binging on drugs and alcohol for the first time,...

Full disclosure: I dislike The Purge film franchise intensely. In particular, the sequels have expanded on a potentially good genre idea and just become absolute dreck. So, a comedic satire of the whole thing contained strong possibilities for me. I’d 100% be on board with something of the sort. At the same time, to only partially tackle the concept would just lead to a mess, and that’s where we are with The Binge. At times, this is an amusing lowest common denominator comedy. At other times, however, cringingly unfunny, almost disregarding its own premise in the hope of capitalizing on a joke that’s never going to work. Dropping this weekend on Hulu, it’s far too hit or miss to recommend. The movie is a comedy that satirizes The Purge and its central conceit. Here, a time period in the near future has descended into such chaos that...

Disney-Pixar’s fantasy film “Onward” launched with $2 million in North America on Thursday night in preview shows.
The number is in the same range as “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” which opened with $2.3 million in previews in June and went on to a $47 million launch weekend.
“Onward” is expected to dominate domestic moviegoing this weekend and collect between $40 million and $45 million at 4,310 sites. The movie centers on a pair of teenage elf brothers — voiced by Chris Pratt and Tom Holland — on a quest to resurrect their dead father, who had arranged for them to receive a magic staff with a spell that will bring him back for only 24 hours so his sons can meet him.
Critical reception has been enthusiastic, earning the film an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Octavia Spencer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lena Waithe and Ali Wong are also in the voice cast. “Monsters University” helmer Dan Scanlon...

Fans of the late NBC comedy Undateable have at least one thing to be thankful for this Thanksgiving: Netflix on Thursday dropped all eight episodes of the new Christmas-themed comedy Merry Happy Whatever, which reunites former castmates Bridgit Mendler and Brent Morin.
Once again, the actors are romantically paired. Mendler plays Emmy Quinn, an L.A.-based financial analyst who brings her boyfriend, struggling musician Matt (Morin), home to meet her tight-knit, Philadelphia-based brood. That includes her hard-to-impress dad, Bucks County sheriff Don (The Parent Trap‘s Dennis Quaid), who takes an immediate disliking to his youngest daughter’s significant other.

Ben Affleck struggles with sobriety in Warner Bros.’ first trailer for his sports drama “The Way Back.”
Affleck plays construction worker Jack Cunningham, who has a routine of drinking at every opportunity — in the shower, at work and at home. That routine is interrupted when he’s asked to coach the high school basketball team on which Affleck’s character was once the star. The job opened up because the previous coach suffered a heart attack.
Affleck takes the gig, explaining, “It keeps me busy. Keeps my mind off of other things.” He then tells one of the team’s players bluntly, “The reason they’re leaving you open is you can’t hit the ocean from the beach.”
That’s followed by more footage of an inebriated Jack, with Affleck saying in a voiceover, “I spent a lot of time hurting myself. I made a lot of bad decisions.

Netflix dropped the trailer for its upcoming Christmas-themed series, “Merry Happy Whatever,” on Monday, starring Dennis Quaid as Don Quinn, the father of a family that likes things done their own way during the holiday. Well, his way.
And his way doesn’t seem to include his daughter Emmy’s (Bridgit Mendler) new boyfriend Matt (Brent Morin) who wants to pop the question this Christmas.
Watch the video above, which also features Ashley Tisdale as Emmy’s sister Kayla, who is also not a big fan of Matt. Poor guy, looks like he’s got a rough road ahead this holiday season.

Walmart and “Mr. Mom” is a can’t-miss combination … right? The big box store’s streaming service, Vudu, debuted the trailer for its series adaptation of the 1983 Michael Keaton movie on Monday.
This one stars Hayes MacArthur in the title role as wife Andrea Anders heads back into the workforce, the Teri Garr gig from the comedy directed by Stan Dragoti. Though times have certainly changed, the domestic gender role-reversal goes about as well as it did decades ago.
Below is Vudu’s description of its small-screen version.
Based on the classic eighties hit film written by John Hughes and starring Michael Keaton, this series is a modern retelling of Mr. Mom. Megan (Andrea Anders) and Greg (Hayes MacArthur) are at a parenting crossroads. After five years raising their two kids at home, Megan has unexpectedly landed her dream job. Greg’s career is anything but a dream job, so...

TBS is asking Angie Tribeca to hand in her gun and badge. The goofy cop comedy starring Rashida Jones has been cancelled after a four-season run, our sister site Variety is reporting.
The Naked Gun-esque comedy starred Jones (Parks and Recreation) as the titular Lapd detective, with rapid-fire puns and sight gags whizzing past as fast as bullets. Hayes MacArthur and Deon Cole both co-starred as fellow cops Jay Geils and DJ Tanner — you see what we mean by “goofy”? — but both exited as series regulars before the fourth and final season. It’s official: There will not be a fifth season for Angie Tribeca, TBS’ cop spoof comedy series created by Nancy and Steve Carell and starring Rashida Jones.
There had been persistent chatter that Angie Tribeca was done after it wrapped its fourth (and now final) season in December. A number of cast members already have moved on, getting other gigs.
Angie Tribeca was in the same situation as two other TBS comedy series, Wrecked and The Guest Book. Wrecked officially was canceled last month, while there still isn’t a formal decision on the Greg Garcia anthology The Guest Book.
There are three remaining TBS original scripted series, The O.G., The Detour and Search Party.

“Angie Tribeca” is coming to an end after four seasons, Variety has learned.
The show, which was created by Steve and Nancy Carrell, starred Rashida Jones as the titular Lapd detective. The series launched as part of TBS’ push to become a home for an edgier brand of cable comedy, along with shows like “Search Party.”

She also recently set up the project “Kevin Can F— Himself” at AMC alongside her producing partner Will McCormack and Valerie Armstrong. That project revolves around the secret life of a sitcom wife, examining the trope of the beautiful woman married to a “caveman-like husband” from her Pov.

Prolific TV director and producer Jason Winer has re-upped his overall deal at his longtime studios home, 20th Century Fox TV, where he has been for a decade and a half. I hear the new pact is for three years and is valued in the eight figures, among the biggest for a director/producer.
Under the new agreement, Winer will continue to develop, executive produce and direct series projects for all platforms through his Small Dog Picture Company. In addition to directing projects he develops, the deal also allows for Winer to helm other pilots for the studio, along with some additional episodic directing.

South by Southwest is that rare thing, a film festival that caters to both the art-house crowd and the masses. Just take last year’s gathering in Austin, Texas. It launched one of the biggest movies of 2018 with “A Quiet Place,” put Kay Cannon on the map as a director with “Blockers,” and discovered the indie gem “Thunder Road.”
In addition to all the barbecue and parties in downtown Austin, this year’s SXSW offers a promising-as-ever slate: including Jordan Peele’s next movie, Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut, and Charlize Theron as the next president of the United States. Speaking of politicians, both Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (“Knock Down the House”) and Beto O’Rourke (“Running With Beto”) are subjects of documentaries playing at the festival. Here are the 11 buzziest films at SXSW 2019.

TV and SXSW have had a mutually beneficial relationship for more than half a decade. From the premiere of “Girls” in 2012 to the introduction of the Episodic section in 2014 to last year’s “Barry” debut, the Austin-based film festival has expanded beyond network offerings to independent TV screenings as well. Serialized offerings have left their stamp on programming, and the 2019 lineup shows things aren’t slowing down.
But you don’t have to fly to Texas to appreciate all the goodies coming out of this year’s schedule. There’s so much to be learned from this year’s festival, whether it’s what upcoming TV shows to tune in for, the market for indie TV at film festivals, or wise words from the many featured speakers. Heck, at SXSW, even the activations offer insights into exciting work around the corner.

Television’s silliest and most surreal cop comedy is back with a bold facelift in Angie Tribeca Season 4.
This is a spoiler free Angie Tribeca Season 4 review.
This review is based on all ten half-hour episodes of Angie Tribeca Season 4.
It’s been a year and a half since there was last any new Angie Tribeca and while the mock-melodramatic comedy ended on a seismic cliffhanger (Angie Tribeca was arrested…for the murder of Angie Tribeca), this is also a show where nothing grave should taken too seriously. Case in point, part of this new season’s pivot involves Angie Tribeca finally getting out of prison after a twenty-year stint.
Tribeca immediately heads back into the fray to help fight crime, but now she’s working alongside her disgruntled son, A.J. (Bobby Cannavale), who was left to grow up without a mother. Neither of these actors’ appearances are changed...

It’s back to the future this weekend for TBS’ screwball Lapd comedy. Just like it did for its rookie year in 2016, Season 4 of Angie Tribeca will be available to binge with a two-night marathon this weekend. Watch the new trailer above.
Episodes 1-5 of the new season starring Rashida Jones as the title cop will air starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, followed by 6-10 at 8 p.m. Sunday. The series launched with a 25-hour marathon in January 2016.
There are a couple of new series-regular faces for this go-round, with Bobby Cannavale playing Tribeca’s estranged son Angie Jr. and Kiersey Clemons as Maria Charo, a rebellious genius recruited from a local college who speaks 50 different languages — but only at the tourist level. She also is a tech expert, whose only weakness is computers.

Prolific songwriter and record producer Henry Russell Walter, aka Cirkut, has listed his celeb-pedigreed triple-story contemporary in the Hollywood Hills for close to $6.5 million. The thirtysomething pop producer, who co-wrote and co-produced hit ditties for Rihanna, The Weeknd and Nicki Minaj, as well as Miley Cyrus’ mega-successful “Wrecking Ball” and Katy Perry’s anthemic chart-topper “Roar,” acquired the property just over two years ago from “Angie Tribeca” actor Hayes MacArthur and “Heroes” actress Ali Larter for $4.15 million. Tucked into a hairpin curve of a winding cul-de-sac above Nichols Canyon and sequestered behind a tall and thick privacy hedge, the approximately 5,500-square-foot home has four bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms.

The opening minutes of the Broken Lizard comedy “Super Troopers 2” are so breathlessly funny they might asphyxiate you. The scene begins with a familiar set-up — a Vermont Highway Patrolman pulls over a vehicle full of pot smokers — and then ploughs through one outlandish reversal after another.
The unwritten history between the first “Super Troopers” and the second is absurdly revealed, and the returning characters from the original get aggrandized to such an outrageous extent that it somehow comes across as ironic self-flagellation.
It comes as no surprise that “Super Troopers 2” cannot maintain either that opening scene’s pace or its hilarity. That degree of madcap inanity could probably never be sustained over long periods of time without becoming exhausting. At some point the actual “movie” part of this new “Super Troopers” movie has to begin, and once it does, the whole film starts to tumble steadily downhill.

The first “Super Troopers” told the story of a group of Vermont state troopers who had so little responsibility that they pulled people over for no reason just to play whimsical improv games. They bantered, they slapsticked, and they eventually solved a big case, which proved that they weren’t totally incompetent at their jobs. It’s not a complicated movie, but it’s a likable one, and a sequel was probably inevitable. If anything, it’s hard to believe it took 17 years.
“Super Troopers 2” picks up with our heroes at an all-time low. A mysterious incident in their past has destroyed their law enforcement careers, but they are brought back together again by a bizarre revelation: a small chunk of Canada along the Vermont border has, due to an oversight, actually been part of America all this time. A police force is needed to help make the transition, and every other cop in Vermont already has their own territory, so the troopers are the only ones available to take the gig on short notice.

So it is that Thorny (Jay Chandrasekhar), Rabbit (Erik Stolhanske), Foster (Paul Soter), Mac (Steve Lemme) and Captain O’Hagan (Brian Cox) get their badges back. Unfortunately, nobody told the governor not to invite Rod Farva (Kevin Heffernan), one of the most horrible human beings on the planet, so he also returns to the force and quickly becomes the bane of everyone’s existence.
Scholarly papers should be written about the comedic versatility of a character like Farva. He’s such an off-putting oaf, and such a spiteful and sexist scumbag, that he can be the butt of literally any joke, no matter how cruel or violent, and it seems relatively fair. As a bonus, he makes all the other characters look better by comparison, so much so that he heroes of “Super Troopers” and “Super Troopers 2” perhaps only look heroic by virtue of the fact they are literally standing next to Farva.
Every time Farva says or does something over the line — like uncomfortably ogle their cultural attaché, Genevieve (Emmanuelle Chriqui) — the rest of the troopers get to tsk-tsk and say he’s taken the joke too far. But of course, Farva makes that kind of joke all the time. The inescapable irony is that Broken Lizard doesn’t disapprove enough to actually stop telling Farva’s jokes. They’re constantly trying to get away with making those jokes by saying they definitely shouldn’t be making them.

This anything-goes mentality steadily drags down “Super Troopers 2.” The film’s jokes about the differences between Canada and the United States are arch, and rather dumb. The troopers spend some time joking about Canadian clichés, like how nice everyone is and how they pronounce the word “sorry,” so it’s kind of funny when they realize that the stereotyping goes both ways. The Canadian Mounties they’re replacing — Podien (Hayes MacArthur), Bellefuille (Tyler Labine) and Archambault (Will Sasso) — have just as many tacky generalizations to make about Americans, and watching an entire roomful of Canadians make fun of the way Americans pronounce “sorry,” for once, is fair play if nothing else.
But as the troopers go about their business, investigating a smuggling operation and pulling their trademark pranks, it becomes clear that although Broken Lizard are too talented and likable to make a film entirely without laughs, they can’t entirely coast on charm and skillful comic timing.
The Canadian-stereotype gags are pervasive to the point that they eventually play less like good-natured ribbing and more like lazy joke-writing and willful ignorance. An ill-advised storyline about Thorny taking female hormone pills goes to every predictable, disappointing place you’d expect it to. And even the bread and butter of the “Super Troopers” movies, those wacky traffic stops, are a heck of a lot less funny than they ever were, because the real-world corollaries are inescapable and disturbing.
“Super Troopers 2” plays like a relic of the rowdy summer-camp movies, mostly of the 1980s, when characters who were objectively jerks could still seem like heroes if they punched upwards, at an establishment so stuffy they made any form of rebellion look noble. What “Super Troopers 2” is missing, and what the original more-or-less had, is that underdog dynamic. A big part of the problem is that the troopers are in charge this time, and they’re mostly just abusing their power for petty, selfish reasons.
So even though they sometimes land a great joke, the troopers aren’t inherently amusing or even all that likable this time around. They’re undeniably corrupt cops, even if they are relatively benign about it. “Super Troopers 2” still manages to be funny quite a bit of the time, but the word “funny” needs an asterisk next to it, warning that the laughs might carry with them a certain amount of guilt.
