Amazon MGM Studios is doubling down on its working relationship with Jensen Ackles after bringing the Supernatural alum aboard the hit television series The Boys for a new episodic drama, Countdown. The project hails from Chicago’s own Derek Haas, the writer and producer of shows like Chicago P.D., Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and more. Haas inked an exclusive deal with Prime Video after exiting Wolf Entertainment. Countdown is the first project to come from the pact.
Haas designed Countdown for Jensen Ackles after the Batman voice actor entered a first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios for his production company Chaos Machine Productions. Ackles established the banner with his wife, Danneel Ackles, after his show-stopping role as Soldier Boy on The Boys.

Supernatural stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles starred as brothers Sam and Dean Winchester in the Eric Kripke-created cult show, which had and continues to boast a grand fanbase. Like their on-screen counterparts, the two share a dynamic off-screen that highlights their camaraderie and brotherhood.
Although there were a couple of bumps along the ride the pair had to navigate, Padalecki and Ackles’ friendship has birthed some of the most unforgettable banters and shenanigans.

Among such interactions the two have had, one resulted in Jensen Ackles being convinced that their wives were questioning their life choices and searching for an out. It all happened during the SeaCon16, where The Boys alum talked about his partner, Danneel Ackles’ reaction to his ‘Dean’ voice. It ultimately culminated in a suggestive joke that reaped laughter from all across the room.

Update Saturday: The Winchesters executive producer Jensen Ackles weighed in on the series officially ending after no new network home could be found.
“With a massive Network shift coupled with an industry strike…welp…that’s some unfortunate timing,” he said on Twitter, thanking fans who rallied to try and save the show following its cancellation by the CW.
Previous Friday: The Supernatural franchise is coming to end — at least for now — as The Winchesters has not been able to get a second season anywhere. Producing studio Warner Bros. Television’s efforts to set up the Supernatural prequel series at another network or streaming platform following its cancellation by the CW have been unsuccessful. All possible avenues have been exhausted, and the search for a new home has come to an end, despite a strong #SaveTheWinchesters campaign led by series executive producer (and Supernatural star) Jensen Ackles.

The CW has opted not to pick up a second season of The Winchesters. The news is not surprising; the Supernatural prequel was among the long-shot renewal prospects at the network under its new ownership as it focuses on unscripted and lower-cost scripted programming (primarily international acquisitions/co-productions) in pursuit of profitability.
So far, only the CW’s strongest existing scripted series, All American and Walker, have been renewed for next season. The three least likely, The Winchesters, Kung Fu and Walker Independence, have been canceled. Remaining in limbo are Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming, which are believed to have the best chance (however small it may be), followed by Gotham Knights.

Jensen Ackles, Danneel Ackles, and their production company Chaos Machine are entering a first-look TV deal at Amazon, Variety has learned exclusively.
The Ackles and Chaos Machine were previously under a first-look deal at Warner Bros. Television. It was reported in October 2022 that they had extended the Wbtv deal for another two years, but they have now exited that deal for Amazon.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the Ackles and Wbtv parted ways on good terms and any projects Chaos Machine had in development with their now former studio home remain in the works. The Wbtv deal was solely a producing deal, while the Amazon deal covers both acting and producing.

Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton and Bethany Joy Lenz are continuing to use their voices to spread awareness about the abuse they suffered throughout their television careers. During Monday’s episode of the “Drama Queens” podcast, the actors were joined by Danneel Ackles to recap the Season 4 finale of “One Tree Hill.” However, the discussion turned into a much more emotional one that explained why they keep speaking out about the behavior of creator Mark Schwahn and what they experienced on later jobs.
First, Burton claims that Schwahn told everyone she was doing cocaine while filming the episode, during which she was taking caffeine pills to make it through the night shoots. Ackles and Burton also alleged that he then called their next employers to say they were problematic. Lenz added, “He was super happy to say anything that he could to keep people from hiring us at any moment.”

Fans of One Tree Hill will remember the moment Hilarie Burton, Sophia Bush, and Danneel Ackles appeared on Maxim magazine back in 2006. The men’s magazine is known for its sexy photos of trending celebrities, so when a trio of stars from The CW teen drama graced its cover, it was a big deal. But apparently, the cast members themselves were less enthused behind the scenes. Burton, Bush, and Bethany Joy Lenz now have an iHeartRadio podcast called Drama Queens where they dissect each episode of the show. In the November 28 episode, “It’s a Fiasco – Ep 404,” the topic of the infamous cover came up, which was featured in the episode. During their chat, Burton and Bush noted that they initially tried to turn down the cover, but they were told participating was not optional. Burton (who played Peyton) recalled a production meeting where the idea was presented as a make-or-break situation for the show.

The ladies of One Tree Hill are opening up about their experience working on the WB/ CW teen drama.
On their Drama Queens podcast, Hilarie Burton, Sophia Bush, and Bethany Joy Lenz chatted on Monday about the Maxim storyline that took place during the drama's fourth season.
If you watch One Tree Hill online, you will likely recall a storyline involving Brooke (Bush) taking photos of Rachel (Danneel Ackles) for Maxim magazine.
Bush, Burton, and Ackles went on to land their own cover in the magazine in November 2006, but they didn't want to do it.
“I know they weren’t trying to solicit basement bullies on the internet, but they saw that a lot of young men were drawn to a violent assault of women and they went, ‘We should do more of that.’ Not, ‘Uh-oh, hold the phone,'” Bush said.
“They were like, ‘Maybe we should do more!

The Winchesters -Pictured: Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester — Photo: Matt Miller/The CW — © 2022 The CW Network, LLC. All Rights Reserved. As Supernatural began to wind down its long run, producers had given a lot of thought about how to keep the franchise alive, even if the original series was coming to an end. One of those possibilities involved a backdoor pilot for a spinoff called Wayward Sisters; even though the episodes aired in Supernatural’s 13th season, the show never got picked up to series. Two of the people who learned lessons from that experience were Supernatural star Jensen Ackles and his wife, Danneel. And though they wish that series could have made it to air, it did help them to develop The Winchesters, a new prequel series that just premiered on The CW. Building on a “beloved international treasure” like The CW’s “Supernatural,” which ran for 15 years and amassed an envious number of devotees, is not an easy feat, but “The Winchesters” showrunner and executive producer Robbie Thompson finds the daunting task as thrilling as it is challenging. Thompson, who was involved as a producer on the “mothership” for five seasons, was deliberate in crafting a world that paid homage to yet stood apart from “Supernatural,” crediting the creative team behind Chaos Machine Productions for its 1970s take on the preexisting universe.

“The Winchesters” star Meg Donnelly, who plays Mary Cambell in The CW’s prequel to “Supernatural,” prepped for the role with the same intensity it takes to fight monsters: There were Season 1 binges of the original series, stunt training and even self-taught Latin classes. But the Disney actress also credits Jensen Ackles, who portrayed her future son Dean Winchester for 15 years and serves as the spinoff’s narrator, for getting acquainted with the fantasy universe.

“The Winchesters” is an interesting “Supernatual” spinoff choice, because not only is it spinning off established characters like “Wayward Sisters” (its second spinoff pilot that didn’t go to series) had attempted to, it’s creating a new world with established characters whose very canon that this show is tackling was already established in “Supernatural.” Because “The Winchesters” isn’t just a spinoff, it’s a prequel: about how John Winchester (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly), father and mother to “Supernatural’s” Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester, met and fell in love. The story of John and Mary was told multiple times over the course of that show’s 15 seasons, thanks to the magic of time travel and flashbacks — and, well, magic. But most important, what was established about John and Mary was the fact that while Mary came from a monster-hunting family, she got...

Supernatural fans know the story of Mary and John Winchester… or so they think. That’s where the upcoming prequel, The Winchesters, which includes vets from the original series such as Jensen Ackles (who also reprises his role as Dean and narrates) and Danneel Ackles as executive producers and Robbie Thompson as the showrunner, comes in. Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger are stepping into the roles of Mary Campbell and John Winchester, and they share their excitement about doing so in the video interview above. As Rodger notes, he went through nine different chemistry tests (totaling about 22 hours) during the audition process. It wasn’t as many for Donnelly, but she says, “when I read with Drake, it just felt so natural and just amazing to me, so I was really, really hoping we would get paired together.” The Mary we meet is “definitely badass,” Donnelly shares. She is a strong,...

Once again, on a Sunday at a Comic Con, Supernatural, in a way, was the dominant presence, thanks to the prequel, The Winchesters. Executive producers Jensen Ackles (reprising his role as Dean and narrating) and Danneel Ackles, showrunner Robbie Thompson, and series stars Meg Donnelly (Mary) and Drake Rodger (John) were on hand for the New York Comic Con panel, moderated by Damian Holbrook, to tease what to expect from the upcoming prequel. Read on for the burning questions that were answered. When did they first start talking about the prequel? They’d had the Covid break in the final season of Supernatural. With the world shut down, “we just started talking about what the expansion of Supernatural and its universe would look like,” Jensen said, noting there had been some attempts in the past. He wanted to see “the throwback to how Mom and Dad got together,” and that appealed to Danneel.

The story of Supernatural and the Winchesters continues in the upcoming CW prequel, premiering on October 11. And there is plenty for fans of the original series to enjoy as The Winchesters tells the beginnings of John (Drake Rodger) and Mary’s (Meg Donnelly) love story. For example, Jensen Ackles (who played Dean on Supernatural and returns onscreen in the role) is an executive producer (as well as narrator) along with his wife Danneel Ackles (who played Sister Jo). While we will hear from Dean every week, “seeing him is a bit of a tricky thing because I don’t know if you noticed, but I don’t really look like Dean and I’m also playing a completely different character onscreen on a different show, so the onscreen element will be a little bit more few and far between,” Jensen tells TV Insider in the video interview above. That’s all, folks. The TV industry’s return to in-person upfront presentations across Manhattan concluded Thursday with the joyful sound of Stevie Wonder rocking “Superstition” at the CW’s New York City Center event.
Among those who presented this week, during what has long been traditionally considered the broadcast networks’ time to shine in front of advertisers, were NBCUniversal, Fox Corp, Telemundo, TelevisaUnivision, Disney, YouTube, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount and the CW. It was evident that NBC, ABC, Fox and CBS are no longer the only stars of the show here, and the Big Four took their place among the streamers and cable channels touted by parent companies throughout the week.
Now that it’s all been said, spun and quipped, Variety‘s team of TV reporters and editors have taken a step back to assess the highs, lows and trends of upfronts week.

The CW announced Monday that Drake Rodger (The In Between) has been cast as John Winchester, the man who would eventually father Sam and Dean. Although a widowed hunter in the Og show, the upcoming series will feature a much younger version of the character. “Recently returned from Vietnam, the selfless and clearheaded John Winchester finds a new mission back home, where traces of his father’s past lead him to a secret organization and a whole new war as a hunter,” says the official description.
