One month ago today, the Netflix streaming service unveiled a batch of images that gave us our first look at the upcoming romantic comedy A Family Affair, which is scheduled to begin streaming on June 28th. With that date now just one month away, a trailer for A Family Affair has been released, and you can check that out in the embed above.
The film was directed by Richard Lagravenese, whose previous credits include Living Out Loud, A Decade Under the Influence, Freedom Writers, P.S. I Love You, Beautiful Creatures, and The Last Five Years. Speaking with the Netflix promotional website Tudum, Lagravenese said he was drawn to the material because, “I saw in it a coming of age story for three different characters at three different stages of their lives. Boss turned stepdad? ? On Tuesday, Netflix released the trailer for the comedy film A Family Affair, out June 28, starring Zac Efron, Joey King, and Nicole Kidman in a less-than-ideal work-family situation.
The trailer opens with a scene of King’s character Zara — a day-to-day assistant to actor Chris Cole (Efron) — letting out a freaked-out yelp and passing out after walking in on her mom, Brooke (Kidman), in bed with Chris.
“Name the movie I won a Teen Choice Award for,” Efron tells Zara to make sure she’s conscious. Her response?...

Joey King has been acting since she was little, but she has never had the opportunity to walk the Cannes red carpet. This year, she finally made a remarkable debut at the Cannes Film Festival, and she left a lasting impression by choosing outfits that showcased her charms.
She was seen on two occasions over the weekend, showing support for the French animated drama film The Most Precious of Cargoes, directed by Michel Hazanavicius, and the Chinese-Hong Kong crime drama She’s Got No Name, starring Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh, and helmed by Peter Chan.

Ever walk in on a relative in an intimate moment and you really wish you hadn’t? Yeah, imagine that it’s your mother (Nicole Kidman) … with your former boss (Zac Efron). That’s the reality for Zara (Joey King) in A Family Affair, directed by Richard Lagravenese. In the new trailer for the film, you can see Zara bear witness to that extremely awkward — and, unfortunately for her, painful — surprise. Upon seeing her boss and mother in bed together, Zara spins on the spot and collides directly with the wall.

Exclusive: Netflix has acquired the spec Queen B, a college comedy written by Giovanni M. Porta. Cameron Fuller will produce along with Brad Fuller for Fuller Media.
Becca Gleason is rewriting for the script and while no deal is closed the plan is to develop it for her to potentially direct. Netflix had no comment.
The logline is kept under wraps but is said to be a gender swapped pic in the business of Risky Business. This is writer Giovanni M. Porta’s second spec script set up this year.
Gleason is best known for directing The Summer of 03, starring Joey King. She is repped by CAA and Navigation Media Group. Porta is repped by UTA and Range.

With the release of MaXXXine less than two months away, Ti West is setting up his next project, which sounds like another helping of pure ’80s sleaze. According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Zac Efron is reportedly in talks to star in Night Business, a series adaptation of the cult graphic novel by Benjamin Marra, which Ti West will direct.
A24 will produce the Night Business series with Nathaniel Halpern (Legion) writing the script and serving as showrunner. Here’s the logline: “In this 1980s-trash-culture homage where a knife-wielding killer is on the loose, committing extreme acts of violence on exotic dancers. Only one man has a will powerful enough to stop this psychopath: Johnny Timothy. But can Johnny mete out his vengeance before more innocent victims have to die? Netflix has been dropping romcoms by the minute, and viewers are totally here for it, and the next in line is A Family Affair! With a theme reminiscent of that time when Michael Scott dated Pam’s mom in The Office, Netflix’s A Family Affair is delightfully unhinged with a hefty dash of sizzling chemistry. Starring Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman and former Disney heartthrob Zac Efron in a whirlwind — albeit slightly inappropriate — romance. A Family Affair also stars Joey King, who plays the mortified daughter whose mother dates her ex-boss. A Family Affair was initially scheduled to be

The Despicable Me movies always do very well at the box office (even if the reviews haven't remained quite as positive), so it came as no surprise that a fourth instalment in Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment's animated franchise was on the way, and a new trailer and poster have now been released.
Though Gru will appear, the Minions have really become the main focus of these movies, and there's plenty of fun to be had with the little yellow fellas in this latest teaser, which sees several "volunteers" transformed into super-powered Mega-Minions.
One gains stretchy abilities like Mr. Fantastic, another is a clear not to The Thing, and there's also a Minion with Cyclops-like optic blasts.
Check out the new trailer and poster below, and let us know if you plan on catching this one on the big screen.

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment have released the final trailer (we think?) for the latest entry in the Despicable Me series, Despicable Me 4, premiering in July.
With the release of The Fall Guy last week, summer blockbuster season has officially arrived, which means lots of eyes are looking at the year’s biggest and splashiest projects and watching how they perform commercially. One such set of eyes will be those of Universal Pictures, who will be keen to retain its crown as the studio that grossed the most money last year and as such, the performance of its biggest movies will play a key role.
Whilst the jury is still out on whether The Fall Guy will be numbered among its successes, hopes will be high that Despicable Me 4 – set to release in July – will be a strong addition to Universal’s balance sheet. After all, 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru...

For Henry Lloyd-Hughes, shooting the scenes of “We Were the Lucky Ones” that take place in a Soviet gulag in Siberia were taxing to shoot but in “the right way” due to how it was shot. “All of those scenes, by and large, were shot chronologically, which meant that there was an intensity to that period of work for me that was physically challenging and mentally grueling, but in a way that I think was right for what we were trying to get across,” he describes to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). Those scenes also got a surprise boost from the weather in Romania in the form of an unexpected snowstorm. “They had set aside these cannons, like these hoses of snow to try and cover it to make it look like Siberia. On what she hopes people take away from We Were the Lucky Ones: “When you think about the Holocaust, the amount of lives that were taken is such a large number that it’s hard to grasp. It feels like you’re so removed from that because it’s been so long and is overwhelming. I’m hoping this story will humanize the feeling people have when they think about the Holocaust and World War II.

Even with all the preparation that Joey King did for “We Were the Lucky Ones,” nothing could have prepared her for meeting the descendants of the Kurc family. Anna, the daughter of King’s character, showed up on set while filming was happening in Malaga, Spain. “It was this very emotional, beautiful moment. The first thing she said to me when she me, she outstretched her arms and she looked at me and she said, ‘Mama,’” she reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). The gesture brought tears to King’s eyes. “She had not met me yet, hasn’t seen any of the work I’ve done to portray her mother yet, yet is here giving me this warm embrace and confidence that says, ‘Yes, you are playing my mother and I’m so excited.’ It just felt like a real big green light for me.

[Editor’s note: This interview contains spoilers for the final episode of Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones.”]
It’s always darkest before the dawn, and that was certainly the case for “We Were the Lucky Ones,” the Hulu miniseries based on the true story of the Kurc family, Jews from Poland who managed to all survive WWII.
The final episode (the show concluded May 2) begins with Halina Kurc (Joey King) imprisoned in Germany. Successfully hiding in plain sight for years, she is eventually captured, and regularly beaten up in jail. All hope seems lost.
“[They were] some of the most intense scenes in the whole show [for] my character,” King told IndieWire. “It’s tough, it’s violent. It’s tough to watch, but it’s also really important. And I think where we landed with it was very helpful in showcasing how brutal it was without being gratuitous. [Showrunner Erica Lipez,] she never wanted to be gratuitous [about] violence towards women. I really love that point of view.

Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones,” based on the book by Georgia Hunter, tells the true story of the Kurcs, a Jewish family who lived in Poland at the onset of World War II. The series follows the Kurcs as the events of the war and the Holocaust separate parents and children, tearing families apart.
As casting director Fiona Weir read the script for the first episode, showrunner Erica Lipez stressed that despite the grim setting, it ultimately was a celebratory story — and it was important she get the family dynamics right.
Speaking with Variety, Weir says Hunter, who based the book on her family experiences, turned out to be her most valuable source. “These were real people that she either knew or discovered, so there was lots to talk about in who these people were. And then, we had to create a group that organically felt like a family,...

Joey King Flaunts Inner Sideboob in Black Cutout David Koma Dress at 49th AFI Life Achievement Award
Joey King’s attendance at this year’s AFI Life Achievement Award Gala honoring Nicole Kidman made perfect sense, as the two are co-starring in the upcoming Netflix movie A Family Affair.

What didn’t quite make sense was her choice of ensemble. Although she looked amazing, I thought the dress was too provocative for the event, and it seemed like she was overshadowing the night’s honoree.
I must admit I like the dress a lot; it’s not your typical red-carpet black dress, and I think it captures Joey King’s daringly feminine yet edgy sense of style. The thing is, I find it inappropriate for the occasion.

Just a few months after her release from prison, Gypsy Rose Blanchard is sharing her “life after lock up” in a new Lifetime series premiering June 3.
“I do not feel free. I feel like I am in a different form of prison,” Blanchard laments in the trailer for “Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up,” which sees her fielding death threats on Instagram, being followed on the highway and consulting a plastic surgeon about her nose.
Blanchard also copes with the fallout of her marriage with Ryan Anderson, whom she married in July 2022, during her eight-year prison sentence. She filed for divorce against the special education teacher in April 2024.
“I don’t want to lose my wife, I love her,” Anderson says in the series, which was presumably shot before the couple officially separated.

Before making your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress, take a tour of our photo gallery that highlights the leading contenders. Currently in the frontrunner position is Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”), who has yet to even be nominated for an acting Emmy at this point in her 55-year career.
Foster would be the first actress to receive an Emmy mention for “True Detective,” which has produced four seasons over the past decade. Its previous three acting notices went to inaugural season costars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey (who competed for Best Drama Actor in 2014) and third season lead Mahershala Ali (2019).
Hoping to soon achieve second wins in this category are Claire Danes (“Full Circle”; formerly of “Temple Grandin”), Kate Winslet (“The Regime”; “Mildred Pierce” and “Mare of Easttown”), Julianne Moore (“Mary & George”; “Game Change”), Nicole Kidman (“Expats”; “Big Little Lies”), and Amanda Seyfried (“The Crowded Room...

When Nicole Kidman was honored with the AFI Life Achievement Award, she spent a large portion of her speech thanking the directors whom she’s worked with throughout the years. The respect for the job, though, doesn’t she mean has any desire to step behind the camera herself.
“I feel like I would be a terrible director because I always have so many ideas. A director has to make choices, and that’s not my strong suit,” Kidman told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday night on the AFI red carpet, noting that a producer’s duties much more align with her interests. “I’m very good at being passionate and supporting the voices and reading a script and going, ‘I love this script,’ or seeing somebody and going, ‘I love this actor, I love this director, how do I support them?’ And they maybe have done nothing [before], but I want to get behind them.

A few years ago, filmmakers Emma Schwartz and Mary Robertson remember taking note of video compilations from old Dan Schneider series that showed children and young teens “enacting scenes that are arguably sexual in nature.”
“One example you see Ariana Grande squeezing a potato, or Ariana Grande — who was then a young teenager — pouring water on her chest and face,” Robertson recalls during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted event. “And you see Jamie Lynn Spears receiving this squirt of a viscous liquid on her face. And there were many on social media who were asking, ‘Did I grow up watching these clips?’ “
Their shock over what they found on social media, together with a story about ’90s kids TV in Business Insider, is what prompted the creation of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. The Investigation Discovery docuseries set out to uncover the...

After winning the Emmy earlier this year for the final season of Trevor Noah’s hosting stint, The Daily Show surprised just about everyone with the announcement that its multiple Emmy-winning previous star Jon Stewart would be returning to host Monday editions during this election year, while other regulars would take turns hosting during the rest of the week.
The multi-host format was born out of necessity following Noah’s departure and a series of what were essentially auditions for a permanent replacement. Unable to land on the perfect choice, producers and Comedy Central settled on Stewart returning and spreading the wealth host-wise to carry the series through this election year.
Ratings are up. It’s working.
Discussing the evolution at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted event were longtime executive producer/showrunner/writer Jen Flanz, co-executive producer/writer Zhubin Parang, and former writer and newly named correspondent Josh Johnson.

Casting for Netflix’s reality competition series Squid Game: The Challenge was a unique challenge: finding 456 diverse and international lead characters.
Casting director Erika Dobrin described the gargantuan task by saying, “I don’t think that’s ever quite been done before on the scale it was done here.”
The Netflix series, based on the streaming’s mega-hit Korean survival drama Squid Game, saw 456 contestants compete for a massive $4.56 million prize through a series of challenges. Can you tell who has a “good” voice and who has a “bad” voice just by looking someone in the face who is lip-syncing to a song? This is the question posed to participants weekly on the Fox game show I Can See Your Voice, hosted and created by Ken Jeong.
“The whole show is predicated on, is this a ‘good’ singer or a ‘bad’ singer without ever hearing them actually hearing them sing,” Jeong tells Deadline during a panel at its Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted awards-season event. “We use visual clues, lip-sync clues, and like detective kind of clues. At the end of the day, the contestant has an opportunity to win life-changing money by determining if the final secret voice is good or bad. And if it is good, then they can win up to $100,000. It’s really just feel-good television at its best.”

“I feel like it really gave no choice but to take that bubble wrap and just chuck it down the drain,” she added. “And my mom, I feel like, is holding onto that bubble wrap now. ‘What do I do with this?’ You know what I mean? But yeah, definitely. It was not in my lane before,...

National Geographic’s Queens isn’t your typical nature documentary series.
From the first episode, it flips the script on what one might expect out, instead diving deep into the love, loss and resilience of the matriarchal societies in the animal kingdom. And it all started with that very first story of both lionesses and hyenas detailed in the “African Queens” episode.
“The executive at NatGeo said, ‘We should do this as a whole series,’ ” executive producer Vanessa Berlowitz explained during Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted panel. “We kind of looked at each other and went, ‘Surely it’s been done.’ And it hasn’t. So it was just one of those great conversations between two female senior leaders, realizing this was a huge content area that was fresh and exciting.”

It’s been over 40 years since the pioneering hip hop group Run-dmc formed in Hollis, Queens, but Darryl “Dmc” McDaniels insists, “I remember everything like it was yesterday.”
He appeared at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary & Unscripted virtual event to discuss the Peacock docuseries Kings from Queens: The Run Dmc Story, which chronicles the group’s incredible achievements and influence. Along with McDaniels, Run-dmc was comprised of Joseph “Run” Simmons and the late Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell.
“We’re going back to 1980,” producer/EP William H. Masterson III said of the series, “when really hip hop was relatively small, and taking the viewer on a ride with these three young men from Queens that came together and really changed a lot — changed pop, changed fashion, changed music, changed race relations between white people and Black people.”

The success of the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building has exposed a new generation of viewers to the comedic brilliance and appeal of Steve Martin. But the actor-writer has been appearing onscreen since the late 1960s – and performing even before that, to smaller audiences, as a kid magician at the newly opened Disneyland.
His journey from shy, showbiz-obsessed youth in Southern California to stand-up sensation and (probably still shy) comedy legend is told in Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in 2 Pieces, directed by Oscar winner Morgan Neville.
“For years, people had asked Steve about doing a documentary. He always had said no,” Neville commented during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders: Documentary + Unscripted virtual event. “I think a combination of having a daughter and of Covid, perhaps, made him, like all of us, kind of think about everything in our lives. And I think it just cracked the...

The Apple TV+ docuseries The Super Models hearkens to the 1990s when four extraordinary beauties ruled the covers of fashion magazines and popular culture: Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista.
“It was a time when music and art and fashion were all coming together. And they were the first influencers … way before there were cell phones or anything,” executive producer and director Roger Ross Williams said during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted event. “They were on the pages of the Daily News and New York Post and the fashion magazines and the gossip magazines. They were everywhere.”
Producer-director Larissa Bills added, “These women, I think, be it their force of personality plus the time, plus the culture, it became a zeitgeist where they were able to own their own image. And I don’t mean that literally because there’s certainly an element...
