Exclusive: Mike Goodridge’s growing UK production company Good Chaos, which is in Cannes with Un Certain Regard title Santosh, has had a minority equity investment from Cameron Lamb’s Paris-based audio platform Alexander.
The investment will give Alexander an opportunity to develop its growing non-fiction IP library, across film and TV formats, while Good Chaos has been able to grow its headcount, operations and production reach.
The companies’ first joint film project is Wife, Witch, Poisoner, Whore, a period thriller based on the Alexander audiobook by Katherine Rundell, and narrated by Helena Bonham Carter.
The official synopsis reads: “Beautiful, rich, clever, and determined English noblewoman Frances Howard was a dazzling celebrity at the court of James I. But when the unhappy teenage bride rebelled against the patriarchy of her day, she was put on trial for witchcraft, infidelity and murder – very nearly at the expense of her life.”

“Abigail,” directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and starring Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, and Alisha Weir in a career-defining role as Abigail, is a film that initially leaves viewers questioning whether it’s an elaborate jest or merely a cinematic misstep. At times, it ventures into the realm of the ridiculous, only to ultimately unveil its true intention: to deliver a rollicking vampire comedy that adeptly blends gore with hilariously chilling moments, centered around a girl who is part Terminator, part vampire, and part… mafia ballerina.
Our time was well spent, filled with hearty laughter, surrendering to a film that, beneath its seemingly nonsensical surface, offers a wildly entertaining experience.
Abigail Plot
The storyline revolves around a cadre of criminals who kidnap a girl under the assumption of demanding a ransom. However, the girl is far from the innocent captive they expected, soon revealing her true, ferocious instincts.

This year's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire wasn't exactly a monster hit, but it did manage to take in close to $555 million worldwide on a reported $135 million budget. Now, we have word that a sequel is officially in development, and Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have enlisted a writer to pen the script.
According to THR, Dave Callaham has signed on to write the untitled movie. No plot details have been disclosed, but it's assumed that both the King of the Monsters and the mighty Monarch of Skull Island will return to face a new, potentially world-ending threat.
Callaham has previously worked on several major studio tentpoles, including the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot, Wonder Woman 1984, Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He also has some prior experience with Big G, having written the early drafts and received story by...

Like many film executives, Tamara Birkemoe spends much of the Cannes Film Festival sprinting from lunches to drinks to dinners, as she meets with potential distributors, financiers and filmmakers. Most nights, the Palisades Park CEO hosts a cocktail hour at the company’s temporary headquarters directly across from the Palais des Festivals, where Cannes’ biggest premieres are held.

I grew up in the time of the Chuck Norris joke. I didn’t even really know who he was apart from the Walker, Texas Ranger guy who Conan O’Brien would pull a lever to get just the most random, out of context clip. I remember seeing the Chuck Norris joke book in a Barnes and Noble store and leafing through it only to find a bunch of absolutely absurd and comically over the top things that Chuck Norris could and would do to you or what he kept behind his beard. It was enough for me to start looking at his overall contribution to film and much of it was action. I found him teaming up with the likes of Lee Marvin in The Delta Force or going up against the great Christopher Lee in An Eye for an Eye. There’s also a great fight he had with...

Despite largely positive reviews (including ours) and good buzz from horror fans, the vampire ballerina horror flick Abigail didn’t find much of an audience when it opened in theaters last month. As of yesterday, the film has only grossed about $22.7 million domestically, and now, only two weeks (and change) since it opened, Universal is giving it a premium VOD release. Starting tomorrow, you can buy it (for $24.99) or rent it ($19.99) from most digital retailers. It will likely also be out on Universal’s Peacock streaming service before long.
Yesterday, in my weekend box office report, I mentioned that one of the reasons a movie like The Fall Guy had such an underwhelming result at the box office this weekend was due to shrinking home media windows. Abigail only opened on April 19th, meaning it’s getting a VOD release in not even three weeks since its theatrical debut, which is a Tiny window.

Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys. Unfortunately, that comes at the expense of the main group of kidnappers/mercenaries who have absolutely no idea what they just got themselves into. The directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (also known as Radio Silence) unleashed a hellish feast for the senses earlier this year thanks to their horror flick with a twist, "Abigail." Because of the wonders of marketing, of course, we found out long before our doomed lead characters that the innocent-looking child they've chosen to hold for ransom is actually a bloodthirsty vampire (Alisha Weir). And in no time at all, the full weight of their predicament dawns on them as they realize that the hunters have now become the hunted in a horrific cat-and-mouse game set at a decrepit old mansion over the course of one endless day.

Disney’s 2017 Beauty and the Beast live-action remake is one of the most critical and commercial hits by the House of the Mouse. Ring the dressing gong because it’s time to change... shows, that is. With Downton Abbey taking its final bow on Netflix on May 31, it’s time to bid adieu to the Crawley family and their downstairs staff. Spanning some 13 years, from 1912 to 1925, Downton Abbey’s six seasons are set against a backdrop of massive social upheaval in Great Britain. When the series begins, the biggest concern of Lord and Lady Crawley (Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern) — aka the Earl and Countess of Grantham — is whether their eldest daughter, Mary (Michelle Dockery), will marry her distant cousin (Dan Stevens), whom fate has chosen as heir to the Grantham estate. Fast-forward through a world war, Spanish flu, the dawn of the Jazz Age, and several near-bankruptcies, and the world has changed far more than Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) may care to admit. Hemlines are shorter, footmen are a...

Exclusive: After having a busy month at the box-office with Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire and Abigail both opening, Dan Stevens is continuing to stay busy as he is set to join Lily James in the upcoming film inspired by the story of Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, from 20th Century Studios and Ethea Entertainment.
While it’s not entirely clear who Stevens will be playing, we’re told he’s set for the part of Herd’s business partner. The untitled feature goes into production this year.
Famously launching the online dating platform Bumble after co-founding and departing Tinder, Herd became one of the youngest self-made billionaires at age 31 when Bumble went public in 2021. While she stepped down as CEO last year, the app continues to be hugely popular amongst the single crowd.
Plot details for the film remain vague, as it’s said to be somewhat loosely inspired by Herd’s story.

After nearly 90 years, Universal has decided to reintroduce one of their oldest monsters, Dracula’s daughter, with their latest horror film, Abigail. The original 1936 film, Dracula’s Daughter, was a direct sequel to the 1931 Dracula and second in the series with the third being 1943’s Son of Dracula.
Abigail takes the basic idea of the spawn of the rapine of darkness but changes it in many ways. First, the character’s name is now Abigail, while the original was Countess Marya Zaleska. Second, Abigail is portrayed as a little girl, while in the original, she appears to be a grown woman. Third, the film is far more violent and gory, while the original was more about suspense and atmosphere.
But how does this interpretation hold up? Is it a worthy reimagining of the classic tale? Let’s sink our teeth in and find out.

Whatever one thinks of the highly controversial TV series Euphoria, there’s one thing no one can deny. No show of this era has been a better launching point for the careers of young movie stars. Zendaya is currently enjoying huge success on the big screen, thanks to Dune: Part Two and Challengers, while Sydney Sweeney is just on the other side of a rare rom-com box office success with Anyone But You and has also just produced and starred in the excellent horror flick Immaculate. Jacob Elordi received a bit of praise for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the Sofia Coppola film Priscilla last year and will next play Frankenstein’s Monster for Guillermo del Toro.

It's been six movies since Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla" in 2014, and Adam Wingard seems to have finally cracked the code. Wingard's sublimely silly "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" happily abandoned all the portent and dourness of the first MonsterVerse movie, choosing instead to celebrate shallow monster mayhem and sugared-up, Saturday-morning-ready fantasy conceits that gleefully abandon logic. Kong lives in the Hollow Earth and fights jackal monsters, while Godzilla rules the surface world where he fights crabs and naps in the Colosseum. These are the basic tenets of a skewed universe lousy with monsters. There are magical stones under the earth that control gravity and miniature wormholes that monsters use to teleport around the planet. Everything is wild and nothing makes sense. And there is an integrity to that.
It seems, however, that there was some injection of actual reality into the film's production. Wingard and his crew filmed "Godzilla x Kong" in Gold Coast,...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire continues the success streak of the Kaiju-verse following Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and Godzilla Minus One. The film showed the triumphant return of frenemies Kong and Godzilla after their intense brawl in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Anyone who has seen "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" — and going by the film's impressive box-office numbers, that oughta be most of you out there — knows that Dan Stevens is an absolute delight in it. To be fair, this isn't a huge surprise, as anyone who's been following Stevens' on-screen career knows that the actor is routinely a highlight of everything he appears in, whether he's the lead in something like FX's "Legion" and "GxK" director Adam Wingard's "The Guest" or (and sometimes especially) when he's appearing as a supporting character in films like "Colossal" or this month's "Abigail."
His role of Trapper in "GxK" seems particularly special, however, given that Stevens isn't merely playing a comic relief character. Instead, he's some unique combination of a wonder-filled adventurer, an animal-loving veterinarian, and a laid-back hippie dude. That's just one way of describing Trapper, however — Stevens himself has...

The vampire horror sub-genre has become increasingly popular yet again. Of course, the main representative of the genre of the recent years is the new TV adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, based on Anne Rice's famous gothic horror novel, but today we will talk specifically about the movies.
Last year alone saw the release of two feature-length vampire horror films, Renfield by Chris McKay and The Last Voyage of the Demeter by André Øvredal. What they have in common are one aspect: an absolute failure in terms of critical and audience sympathy.
In this context, the new horror film Abigail is particularly noteworthy. Even though it is currently showing rather modest box office indicators, the new movie has already managed to get rave reviews. That's all thanks to how intelligently the script is constructed, with relevant and genuinely clever references and to the 20th century works that inspired it.

There really needs to be some regulation on calling your horror movie The Ritual, even it has a ritual or rituals in it. Seriously, go to the IMDb and see how many titles come up with you type it in (we'll wait — it could be a while)… That, however, isn't stopping director David Midell, who has Al Pacino and Dan Stevens ready to play priests in a new based-on-truth tale that uses that name.
Midell wrote the script with creative partner Enrico Natale and has taken inspiration from a true story. It'll follow a pair of priests, with Stevens' questioning his faith and Pacino's trying to overcome a troubled past as they shove their differences aside to try to help a young woman.
Emma Schmidt's demonic possession demanded a series of dangerous and harrowing exorcism, and her case is still the most thoroughly documented example of the practice in American history.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire brought American audiences into the fun schlock that defined a run of the Godzilla movies which is called the “Showa era.” This era is basically what people think of when you bring up Godzilla because it’s all about the giant monster battles. The movies are also usually given an out-there, psychedelic plot that drives the monsters into fighting each other. Godzilla X Kong was a smashing success at the box office and has the studio confident in its upcoming plans for sequels. Legendary’s chairman, Mary Parent, would state, “This (box office) is certainly an exciting result. We are in a good position to continue the journey, but let’s see how Godzilla x Kong unfolds. These are early days, but we are certainly feeling good.“
The director of Godzilla X Kong, Adam Wingard, brought in his trusted writer, Simon Barrett for this installment.
