Back in 1922 Campton Manor was the scene of an unexplained mass death, twenty-eight guests at a New Year’s party died of heart attacks at the same time. There was no trace of poison, and the case was never solved. The mansion has, needless to say, sat empty ever since.

John Carpenter’s illustrious catalog of horror and non-horror classics has already seen three remakes, with at least one more kinda-sorta confirmed on the way (Escape from New York). If you consider 2011’s The Thing enough of a remake, notch another on the bedpost. It makes sense; Carpenter turned his no-bullshit attitude into a masterful filmmaking style, and those listed titles harbor nostalgic admiration. We’re probably closer than we think to seeing Bryan Fuller’s Christine remake for Blumhouse or a contemporary They Live, while Dwayne Johnson’s Big Trouble in Little China sequel project fades away. Imagine Julia Ducournau’s Christine should Fuller exit, or what about if James Gunn booked a brief horror vacation away from the Dceu for his take on They Live?
Carpenter’s brand of down-and-dirty storytelling mixed with societal commentaries make his works perfect for generational updates, but they can’t all be winners.

Christmas Books That Were Turned Into Movies ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Not everyone likes reading books. It demands a big chunk of your time and a lot of concentration. And come on, let’s be real, why bother when you can easily watch a two-hour movie adaptation that covers all the important scenes and leaves out all the fillers? Besides, even for the most avid book readers, diving into Christmas-themed books might not be very high up on their list of holiday priorities. So, what better way to fill in that book void on Christmas than by watching some Christmas films based on books?
Here are 5 holiday-themed books that were turned into movies.

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

I've always enjoyed "The Day After Tomorrow," and not just because I was a child when it first came out. Yes, the science behind what happens in the movie isn't great, and yes, there is not a single three-dimensional character to be found here, but the movie is basically a slasher film where the killer is Mother Nature, and you must admit that's kind of cool.
One issue with this movie is that, throughout the past few decades, we've seen director Roland Emmerich make plenty of other disaster movies and play around with the same sort of tropes, often in much more memorable ways. If you're looking for cool destructions of major landmarks, "Independence Day" has got it beat. If you're looking for absurdly over-the-top weather catastrophes, "2012" has got you covered. Meanwhile, this movie is actually trying to be a little realistic, so it can't get too crazy with the destruction it shows us.

Composer and longtime David Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti has died at age 85.
Badalamenti composed the iconic score for “Twin Peaks” and other Lynch projects including “Blue Velvet,” “Wild at Heart,” “Lost Highway,” “The Straight Story,” and “Mulholland Drive.” He also wrote new music for the 1992 “Twin Peaks” prequel film “Fire Walk with Me” and for the 2017 third season on Showtime, “Twin Peaks: The Return.” Throughout his career, Badalamenti worked with artists like David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Nina Simone, Liza Minnelli, Michael Jackson, and LL Cool J. In addition to his film work, he composed the opening theme to the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.
Badalamenti’s nephew posted on social media to confirm his passing. “My great uncle Angelo Badalamenti has crossed the barrier onto another plane of existence,” he wrote. “Between his work on ‘Blue Velvet,’ ‘Twin Peaks,’ ‘Cabin Fever,’ ‘Nightmare on Elm Street 3,’ and a plethora of others, plus...

Kyle MacLachlan is remembering his “Twin Peaks” co-star Al Strobel, who passed away at the age of 83 on December 2.
Strobel famously played Phillip Gerard, aka the “one-armed man,” on the series co-created by David Lynch and Mark Frost. Strobel reprised the cult-favorite role for Lynch’s 2017 “Twin Peaks: The Return.” Strobel’s death was announced on Facebook by “Twin Peaks: The Return” producer Sabrina S. Sutherland.
“I am sad to have to post that Al Strobel passed away last night. I loved him dearly,” Sutherland wrote on December 3. “Through the darkness of future past and much sadness we say goodbye to Al Strobel. He is an irreplaceable human being and will always be an important part of our ‘Twin Peaks’ family.”

Julee Cruise, one of David Lynch’s go-to musicians who sang on a version of the “Twin Peaks” theme song “Falling” that became a hit in Europe, has died, her husband said. She was 65.
Husband Edward Grinnan wrote on Facebook: “She left this realm on her own terms. No regrets. She is at peace.”
“Falling” was an instrumental written by “Twin Peaks” soundtrack and score maestro Angelo Badalamenti. Unlike the frenetic, high-energy theme songs and sequences of the era, he 1990 hit show’s opening song was a hypnotic, lilting tone-poem played over images of a waterfall, signaling a … different kind of network TV program.

"Death is a hard way to make a living." LevelFilm has revealed an official trailer for the indie dark comedy The Middle Man, the latest film made by an award-winning Norwegian filmmaker named Bent Hamer - one of his biggest hits was the indie Factotum from 2005 with Matt Dillon. This new one already premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, but it hasn't made its way down to the US yet despite taking place in the US. The film is set in Karmack, a small town in the American Midwest that is so economically depressed that it hires Frank Farrelli as a middle man to deliver bad news to people because none of the residents can bear to do it themselves anymore. Norwegian actor Pål Sverre Hagen stars as Frank, with a cast including Don McKellar, Kenneth Welsh, Paul Gross, Trond Fausa, Aksel Hennie, and Bill Lake. This looks like a very strange,...

Frank Farelli (Pål Sverre Hagen) has been unemployed in a dying town for quite some time. The area used to attract visitors in the past—not many, but enough to staff a hotel that’s now been closed for years. So too has the local movie theater. As the so-called “Commission” explains it, they may not be able to keep the streetlights going thanks to a dwindling budget caused by a lack of taxpayers. Not only has most of the town left, but those who inexplicably remain are currently suffering from a rash of accidental tragedies. And since Town Hall consists of those three men and a secretary (Tuva Novotny’s Brenda), someone is needed to break the bad news.
Enter a newly formed government position: The Middle Man. It won’t be easy, but Frank used to work a train station window before it also shut down and left...

We highly recommend this lovely short film titled Hedgehog's Home, a stop-motion animated short film made by Montreal-based filmmaker Eva Cvijanovic. The short is about, as you might have guessed, a hedgehog living in a forest who is made fun of by a sly fox, a greedy bear, a wicked wolf, and a muddy wild boar. Cvijanovic creates her shorts using felt and cloth, which gives them an especially cuddly look and feel. Featuring the voice of Kenneth Welsh as the narrator, delivering a sweet little poem based on the the classic story by Branko Ćopić. Featuring twangy, funky music by Darko Rundek. Void. “A completely empty space”… according to a quick Google search. Well, not so much, when it comes to art. In fact many an artist, whether it be in words, paint, sound, or pictures, have tried to fill it since mankind slithered out of the primordial soup eons ago. The attraction may be it is the blankest canvas of them all. And possibly the darkest…
The Void is the latest leap into the “empty space”, which lands chin deep in B-movie tentacle stew. Cooked up from the minds of Jeremy Gillespie and Steve Konstanski, both on writing and directing duties, and pretty much everything else. Their backgrounds are in art direction and practical effects, and they deftly handle the practical “Lovecraftian” creatures and blood splatter; lovingly dished up from the pages of a John Carpenter inspired recipe book.

This year has already given us a couple pretty great horror movies with “Split” and “Get Out,” and now the producers behind the sensational “The Witch” have a spring treat filled with terror for genre fans: “The Void.”
Written and directed by Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski, and starring Aaron Poole, Kathleen Munroe, Ellen Wong, Kenneth Walsh, Evan Stern, Daniel Fathers, and Grace Munro, the film unfolds inside a hospital where things get cosmically terrifying.

I was recently comparing directorial culture today with that of the 80s and 90s, referencing how new technology has allowed a disintegration of the old school “pay your dues” mentality. Forty years ago you had artists working their way up under the tutelage of established directors through the more niche technical departments. See James Cameron (matte painter on Escape from New York) and Joe Johnston (visual effects on Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark) as examples. I’m not saying this type of mailroom intern to studio executive evolution isn’t still possible or relevant, just that young filmmakers can currently make a calling card film like the $750,000 budgeted Safety Not Guaranteed and find themselves helming a $150 million blockbuster like Jurassic World in only three years.
Is that talent? Luck? A bit of both, surely. But I still admire the idea of learning before jumping, earning the big...

Following its Frontieres market pitch a few years ago and a successful Indigogo campaign, The Void shot in Canada last year with Aaron Poole, Kathleen Munroe, Kenneth Welsh, Ellen Wong, and Art Hindle. The film premiered at Fantastic Fest 2016 in Austin to a packed house, with producer Casey Walker and directors Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski in attendance. The Void draws inspiration from a number of horror influences, including Hellraiser, The Beyond, H.P. Lovecraft, and Lucio Fulci. Those expecting the absurd comedic touches of Aston-6 (the filmmaking collaborative of which Gillespie and Kostanski are part) are in for a surprise, because The Void is grim. However, those who have been paying attention know not to expect any funny business here, unless your idea of laughs is a Rob...

When practical effects drive a film’s talking points, I pause. Gruesome monster designs and caved-in prosthetics merely supplement story, yet a film like Harbinger Down piles all its eggs into one blood-soaked basket. Fans yearn for realistic SFX, and filmmakers always aim to dethrone The Thing‘s bar-setting kingship. But at what cost? Take Astron-6’s The Void. Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski create Lovecraftian hellbeasts from synthetic molding, yet a cultist presence could have used more fleshing out. Bodies splatter, character structures crumble and visuals outweigh storytelling.
Good thing the ratio of destruction:emptiness airs on the side of insanity.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Screen Media Films. Directors/writers: Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski. Cast: Kathleen Munroe, Ellen Wong, Kenneth Welsh, Aaron Poole, Art Hindle and Stephanie Belding. The Void is an upcoming horror release, from Canadian filmmakers Astron 6. This team has been responsible for a number of decent horror features, including: Manborg (2011), Father's Day (2011), The Editor (2014) and others. Their latest film deals with the horrors of birth and the possible aftermath of death? The film does not have an answer to mortality, or immortality, though. Much of the film takes place in hell and veteran horror fans will see some of Clive Barker's Hellraiser (1987), here. In costume, makeup and setting, this film wears its influences on its sleeve. This viewer enjoyed the practical effects, in the film. But, the film's theme and message comes across as convoluted, for at least one viewer.

I've been hearing a lot of great things about this upcoming sci-fi horror thriller called The Void. The movie is a throwback to the classic '80s horror films that many of us grew up enjoying, and it comes completely old-school crazy gory and bloody practical FX. The film is being compared to the classic horror films of John Carpenter and Clive Barker.
The story centers around a group who are fighting to survive in a hospital where people are turning into insane-looking monsters from hell. It definitely looks like the kind of twisted and demented horror film that I'd enjoy. Here's the full synopsis:
Encountering a blood-soaked man on a dark deserted road, a police officer rushes the victim to the local hospital. Soon the staff and patients are trapped by a terrifying, otherworldly threat and forced on a hellish voyage into the depths of the building to escape the nightmare.

"Who are they?" "There is something calling them all here..." Screen Media Films has debuted a brand new full-length trailer for the horror film The Void, which is a gnarly throwback to old school horror from the 80s with nasty practical effects, and gross gore galore. The Void is co-directed by Jeremy Gillespie & Steven Kostanski (both from Canadian filmmaking collective Astron-6), and is a mind-bending sci-fi horror thriller about a small town overrun by some "otherworldly threat". The cast includes Aaron Poole, Ellen Wong, Kathleen Munroe, Kenneth Welsh, and Daniel Fathers. We featured two short 30-second teasers last month, and now have a full trailer below to entice horror hounds. I've heard this has some cool scenes, and of course some excellent practical effects, but the rest of it is apparently a mess. Still might be worth a look. Here's the full-length trailer (+ poster) for Jeremy Gillespie & Steven Kostanski's The Void,...

Prepare for a fresh slice of terror from the warped imaginations of VFX and design masters Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie. The Void is a highly anticipated new horror following a series of successful and prestigious festival appearances. Encountering a blood-soaked man on a dark deserted road, a police officer rushes the victim to the local hospital. Soon the staff and patients are trapped by a terrifying, otherworldly threat and forced on a hellish voyage into the depths of the building to escape the nightmare.
Shocking, haunting and boasting mind-blowing practical special effects, The Void is a new must-see horror event, starring Ellen Wong (Scott Pilgrim vs the World), Kathleen Munroe (Alphas), Aaron Poole (Forsaken) Kenneth Welsh (The Aviator) and Daniel Fathers. The film is written and directed by Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski (aka Astron-6).

"You will become something remarkable." Plenty of eerie body horror is teased in a hospital under siege in the official, full-length trailer for The Void, giving viewers a deeper look into the new film following the teaser trailer released last month.
"The Void, written & directed by Jeremy Gillespie & Steven Kostanski, stars Aaron Poole, Kathleen Munroe, Ellen Wong, Kenneth Welsh, Evan Stern, Daniel Fathers & Grace Munro.
When police officer Carter (Aaron Poole) discovers a blood-soaked man limping down a deserted road, he rushes him to a local hospital with a barebones, night shift staff. As cloaked, cult-like figures surround the building, the patients and staff inside start to turn ravenously insane. Trying to protect the survivors, Carter leads them into the depths of the hospital where they discover a gateway to immense evil."
Horror fans can enter The Void when Screen Media Films releases the movie in theaters and on VOD beginning April 7th.

With horror recently enjoying an arthouse renaissance, another film that looks to fit the bill will arrive this year. The first teaser trailer for director Jeremy Gillespie’s (Father’s Day) latest horror film The Void has now arrived. Last year, the film stopped by Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas where it made an blood-splattered impression with comparisons to the work of John Carpenter.
This first teaser, although quite brief, packs a punch with no shortage of effective imagery, including some eye stabbings, body horror, and the threat of the Kkk, while also packing some sci-fi elements. Set for a U.K. debut at the end of next month, we’re still waiting a U.S. release, but in the meantime, check it out below with a hat tip to Birth Movies Death.

Some critics who have seen the film are praising it and are comparing it to the classic horror of John Carpenter and Clive Barker. The Void looks like it could be a lot of fun to watch, and it seems like there are a lot cool practical blood and gore effects used to make the movie!

“There is a hell. This is worse.” Welcome to The Void, Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski’s indie horror flick that has today conjured up its first, truly unsettling teaser trailer.
Even for a 30 second promo, The Void crams in just enough bloodsoaked nightmare fuel to leave us wanting more, and if the footage shown evokes memories of John Carpenter, it should. Before blazing a trial of their own, Gillespie and Kostanski worked in design and VFX across such high-profile productions as Pacific Rim, RoboCop and the Hannibal TV series, and the creative duo are “committed to introducing audiences to a unique horror-mythology” with their latest project.

What a way to start off the week! The formidable cast list for Showtime's forthcoming Twin Peaks revival series was revealed this morning, and man, is it a doozy. In addition to boasting such key returning players as Kyle MacLachlan (Dale Cooper), Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer/Maddy Ferguson) and Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne), there are a number of surprising A-listers in the mix including Michael Cera, Trent Reznor, Amanda Seyfried and Naomi Watts. On the downside, a not-insignificant number of cast members from both the original series and the 1992 prequel film Fire Walk with Me are completely absent from the list. Where, for instance, is Lara Flynn Boyle (or Moira Kelly, for that matter)? Michael Ontkean? Piper Laurie? Joan Chen? Anyone from the mill? (Literally, there is no one from the mill.) So while I'm thankful that most of the major players are back in action, I can't help but...

'The Aviator' movie with Leonardo DiCaprio as bizarre billionaire Howard Hughes: Bloated biopic. 'The Aviator' movie review: What's not good for the Spruce Goose… Imagine Citizen Kane directed by the Steven Spielberg of The Color Purple, Schindler's List, Amistad, and Saving Private Ryan. The final result would look something like a Barry Levinson film – for instance, the superficial and phony Bugsy. Or, an even more appropriate example, the superficial, phony, and bloated The Aviator. Except, of course, that Levinson is not the man responsible for the 2004 mega-production starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the eccentric, billionaire ladies' man Howard Hughes. Strangely enough, that man is Martin Scorsese, the director of hard-hitting films such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Gangs of New York. Scorsese, a fan of Old Hollywood, apparently wanted to have some fun with the reported $110 million budget (approx. $138 million in 2016) made available to him. The director no doubt had a ball while making The Aviator,...
