Legendary entertainer Dick Van Dyke was as surprised as anybody when he arrived to record the CBS special “Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic.” For our recent webchat he reveals, “I hadn’t seen anything until I got there, and they had built the old living room from the show. Behind us was the set from “Chim Chim Cher-ee” from “Mary Poppins.”
CBS had assembled an all-star musical tribute for the Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award winner’s to celebrate his 98th birthday last December. “What We Wanna Be” was written for the Glitter & Doom end credits and was inspired by Indigo Girls member Amy Ray’s “own experience of peeling off the layers of things I have built over the years to shield me from pain or even my own truth,” as she explained in a previous statement. “It is a conversation between Glitter and Doom and their endeavor to find healing through the love they have kindled together. Hayley Williams’ music taste is top-notch — and on Monday, she shared some of the albums that have been “keeping [her] company” recently.
Among the albums on the Paramore frontwoman’s list were Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter and Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, both of which she had sweet things to share.
About Bey’s country LP, Williams wrote on Instagram stories: “I cry at the same part of ‘American Requiem,’ every time. Showed my mom and she got chills around the same time. When Beyonce sings, ‘If you ain...

Film and television composer Bear McCreary has unleashed “Incinerator” as the latest single from his recently announced album The Singularity, arriving May 10th. The song features Serj Tankian on vocals, and has a sonic vibe that would fit comfortably in System of a Down’s catalog.
“When I got the music, when I got this song specifically, I was blown away,” stated Tankian. “It’s explosive.”
The song is explosive, indeed, starting out with a blistering guitar riff before Tankian’s soaring trademark vocals take the spotlight. About two minutes into the track, Tankian shifts into a chaotic rapid delivery reminiscent of Soad’s “Chop Suey!”
The tune serves as the album’s leadoff track, with McCreary remarking, “Once I heard Serj’s searing vocals, I knew immediately that ‘Incinerator’ would be the first song on the album, acting like a warning that a massive, aggressive, and emotional journey lay ahead.

Keith Richards takes on the Velvet Underground’s classic “I’m Waiting for the Man” for an upcoming tribute album dedicated to the music of Lou Reed.
Arriving a day before what would have been Reed’s 82nd birthday, Richards also shared a new video of studio footage from the recording of his rendition, which puts his trademark Rolling Stones riffage on the Velvet Underground & Nico track.
“To me, Lou stood out. The real deal!” Richards said in a statement. “Something important to American music and to All Music! I miss him and his dog.

The 2024 Grammys aired on February 4, and as usual, I have some thoughts. For passionate awards pundits, the Grammys are often best enjoyed afterwards, when you can analyze the results properly and theorize about what they might be telling us about the voting process, the Recording Academy and the music industry as a whole. Here are my five main takeaways.
SEEGrammy winners list in all 94 categories
Pop voters have refined taste
Listen, I don’t wanna dunk on any artist or song, but Taylor Swift’s remix of “Karma” featuring Ice Spice is just not that good, with some simply feeling like the added verse was out of place. Regardless, the track was predicted to win the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, mostly due to the fact that the original version topped pop radio and all the other nominees were deep cuts and/or album tracks.

It must have been a surreal night at the Grammy Awards for boygenius, who earned wins in three categories. But what was truly surreal was the moment the trio ran to the stage to accept the Best Rock Performance trophy, all while the house band played Mr. Bungle’s wonderfully eccentric tune “Carousel.”
The bizarre moment happened during the “Premiere Ceremony,” which took place before the main nationally televised event. In presenting the Best Rock Performance category, Rufus Wainwright announced the winners as boygenius, who beat out Arctic Monkeys, Black Pumas, Foo Fighters, and Metallica for the award.
The Grammy band then kicked in to the Mr. Bungle song, and after a few moments, the members of boygenius — Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, and Phoebe Bridgers — came running down the aisle to accept the award.

Dave Chappelle has won his fifth Grammy for best comedy album and second in a row for What’s in a Name, a 40-minute Netflix special taken from a speech at his former high school, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, where he defended his controversial 2021 special The Closer, which won the comedy album prize at the 2023 Grammys, and expressed support for freedom of expression.
With his win at the 2024 Grammys, Chappelle beat fellow nominees Wanda Sykes (I’m an Entertainer), Sarah Silverman (Someone You Love), this year’s Grammys host Trevor Noah (I Wish You Would) and Chris Rock, whose Selective Outrage live Netflix special featured Rock speaking out publicly about being slapped onstage by Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars. Every time I see Dick Van Dyke’s name in a headline lately, I fear the worst. But this week it meant a joyous celebration. In CBS’ new two-hour special “Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic,” the legendary actor — who throughout his career has won multiple Emmys, a Tony and a Grammy Award — was honored on his 98th birthday for his many contributions to the arts.
The tribute, which is now streaming on Paramount+, features special performances by Jason Alexander, Rufus Wainwright, Weird Al Yankovic, Rita Ora and Amber Riley, among others. Meanwhile, the guest list is just as long and just as impressive as Van Dyke’s career. Dame Julie Andrews, Mel Brooks, Rob Reiner, Carol Burnett, Ted Danson, Stanley Tucci and Lin-Manuel Miranda are just a few of the celebs who appear during the star-studded event. And to top it all off, there’s a holiday number too.

Rufus Wainwright won’t hit age 50 until July 22, technically, but he started the festivities a few days early with “Fifty Isn’t the End,” a three-hour show at Long Island’s East End that was a tribute to Wainwright’s career, his family lineage and, inadvertently, some of the other children of famous musicians who happen to be among his pals.
With a lineup that included Jimmy Fallon, comic Tig Notaro, Laurie Anderson and members of Wainwright’s family, including his sister Martha and his father Loudon III, the show...

Less than a year after releasing acclaimed album The Loneliest Time, pop savant Carly Rae Jepsen has returned with new single “Shy Boy.”

The Beatles and The Beach Boys were rivals during the 1960s, but they had mutual respect and admiration for each other’s work. Members of each band have publicly shared support and praise for the iconic music they both have created. Brian Wilson is a passionate fan of The Beatles, and he said he “flipped” out when he first heard this song written by John Lennon.
Brian Wilson ‘flipped’ out when he first heard John Lennon’s ‘Across the Universe’
Wilson enjoyed many of The Beatles’ projects, including 1965’s Rubber Soul. He never really cared about their competition on the charts, as both created great music while trying to one-up each other. In a 2015 interview with Uncut Magazine, Wilson was asked to share his favorite Lennon song. The “I Get Around” singer selected “Across the Universe”, one of Lennon’s tracks from The Beatles’ final album.

One of John Lennon’s proudest songwriting moments was “Across the Universe.” It’s a song that came to him out of the blue, and it struck a chord with audiences upon its release. However, Lennon was “disappointed” with the final product, believing the song was “never done properly.”
John Lennon said ‘Across the Universe’ had some of the ‘best lyrics’ he’d ever written John Lennon | Michael Putland/Getty Images
“Across the Universe” was the first composition for John Lennon to be recorded in the five months since “I Am the Walrus”. In All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview With John Lennon and Yoko Ono by David Sheff, Lennon reflected on writing the song one night in Kenwood. While his wife was sleeping, words were flooding his mind, and he needed to write them down somewhere.

Miley Cyrus is standing in the backyard of the Los Angeles home where Frank Sinatra once lived, glowing in the sun as she sings about a man who broke his own heart. She won’t take the blame, but she’s sorry that it happened. The house is the same location where she shot the “Flowers” music video, and it’s also the backdrop of Endless Summer Vacation (Backyard Sessions), the Disney+ special that premiered Friday and finds the singer debuting live performances of songs from her just-released eighth studio Endless Summer Vacation.

St. Vincent delivered a faithful rendition of David Bowie’s “Young Americans” as part of Thursday’s Love Rocks NYC benefit, an all-star concert staged at New York’s Beacon Theater to benefit God’s Love We Deliver.
Backed by a massive band that included backup singers and a horn section, Annie Clark echoed blue-eyed soul-era Bowie, working the crowd and singing with a very Thin White Duke inflection.
St. Vincent’s appearance came one night after she covered Portishead’s “Glory Box” alongside the Roots on The Tonight Show.

Miley Cyrus is returning to her Disney roots with "Endless Summer Vacation (Backyard Sessions)," a new special presentation set to premiere on Disney+. Before she became one of the world's top pop stars, Cyrus starred as the titular character in "Hannah Montana." The series launched her career, but it also took the "Flowers" singer quite a bit of time to distance herself from the fictional singer she played as a teen.
