For many anime fans, Cowboy Bebop is the ultimate anime experience. The one-season series became a massive hit and a proper cult classic, with basically everyone citing it as one of the best anime series ever made. And while a movie was released and we also had Netflix’s failed attempt at a live-action revival, Cowboy Bebop is more or less a thing of the past as the original series has been untouched and unfazed by the recent revival and reboot craze. And while there has been some activity there, with merch coming out and even a remaster of the original Ost, the 25th anniversary of the anime once again raised the hopes of those hoping for another Cowboy Bebop work, but it seems that this is not going to happen.

Following the sudden passing of Akira Toriyama on March 1, 2024, Dragon Ball scriptwriter Takao Koyama, has offered some insight into Toriyama’s health on his personal Twitter account.
In a series of tweets, Koyama first expressed concern regarding the cause of death, a subdural hematoma, which often results from a serious head injury, questioning whether Toriyama had experienced a head injury.
He questioned, “Subdural hematoma. I wonder if you hit your head?“
In a follow-up tweet, he revealed that Toriyama had been ill since last year, acknowledging the challenges he may have faced during his illness.
“It seems you’ve been suffering from illness since last year. That’s unfortunate. It must have been quite difficult for you. I was also hospitalized for 100 days last year, so I can empathize with you.“
Koyama went on to credit Toriyama for giving his career as a screenwriter a significant boost, thanks to his inclusion in both Dr.

The big movie studios opted out of San Diego Comic-Con 2023, meaning the event didn't have all the air sucked up by the next big Marvel Cinematic Universe news for once. One of the most exciting announcements was "Lazarus," a new sci-fi thriller anime from Shinichirō Watanabe and Studio Mappa.
The announcement came with a teaser trailer; Watanabe's animes always have a musical theme and it looks like "Lazarus" will have the same jazzy score as "Bebop" (this time performed by saxophonist Kamasi Washington). Rather than a U.S. import like most anime, "Lazarus" will premiere on Toonami (the production team is aiming to be finished by the end of 2024). The American influence doesn't stop there, for the action scenes will be designed by "John Wick" director Chad Stahelski. Watanabe crafts animated action with unrivaled fluidity, so him and Stahelski working together is a dream team.

(Welcome to Animation Celebration, a recurring feature where we explore the limitless possibilities of animation as a medium. In this edition: "Tokyo Godfathers.")
In Satoshi Kon's fantastic holiday fable, an unruly alcoholic named Gin, an angry and rebellious runaway teen named Miyuki, and a stoic albeit lonely trans woman named Hana are all surviving their Christmas Eve on the streets of Tokyo as a makeshift, houseless family. As the three dumpster dive to try and find something good to eat, they come across an abandoned newborn baby in the trash. With little to no information on the baby's identity, this ragtag trio spends their night desperately trying to find the parents of the infant and return the baby to safety.
If the premise of "Tokyo Godfathers" sounds vaguely familiar, it's because Kon was inspired by the John Ford western, "3 Godfathers," which starred John Wayne and was based on Peter B. Kyne...

"I felt like I was watching a dream I could never wake up from. Before I knew it, the dream was over."
These words, spoken by Spike Spiegel in Shinichirō Watanabe's genre-hybrid anime series, "Cowboy Bebop," form the crux of his character. Apart from being one of the primary protagonists of the series, Spike is the heart of "Cowboy Bebop," as his troubled nonchalance reinforces several themes in Watanabe's classic. The green-haired space cowboy undergoes quite the personal journey, in which he is forced to confront his murky past and dance with his own demons. This makes Spike Spiegel an extremely beloved character, and his fate at the end of "Cowboy Bebop" is still a topic of heated discussion for long-time fans of the anime.
But how did Watanabe come up with such a compelling character to begin with? In order to understand this, let's take a quick...

In the eyes of many, the Netflix live-action remake of the classic anime "Cowboy Bebop" did not hit the jackpot. It raked in mixed to negative reviews, and many fans of the anime found the visuals did not match the kinetic and rhythmic nature of the original.
There's no dispute that the original "Cowboy Bebop," directed by Shinichirō Watanabe, written by Keiko Nobumoto, and released in 1998, is the Og behemoth, a milestone in animation history set to the jazzy music of "The Seatbelts" that elevated anime as a whole. The live-action version has the same set-up — it's still about a crew of rough and tumble bounty...

It is always a pleasure to revisit great titles of the past and the recent, impressive ultimate edition of “Wolf’s Rain” by Anime Limited proved a great opportunity to do so for a title that seems to have been almost completely forgotten.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers (2003) is showing December 18, 2017 - January 17, 2018 and Paprika (2006) from December 19 - January 18, 2018 on Mubi in the United Kingdom in the retrospective Satoshi Kon, Anime Maestro. Tokyo GodfathersIt could be said that consistency and eclecticism make up two sides of the auteurist coin, in which the artist's voice can be seen and felt across a body of work that is either noticeably focused in subject matter, thematic concerns, or stylistic approaches (Alfred Hitchcock, François Truffaut, Wes Anderson) or wildly varied in any or all of those areas (Louis Malle, Steven Soderbergh). In that respect, Satoshi Kon got to have it both ways with the final two completed animated features in his oeuvre, the satisfyingly odd parting pairing of Tokyo Godfathers (2003) and Paprika (2006). Sorely missed these past seven years since his premature death from pancreatic cancer on...

From the early days of Hollywood, film studios have believed that if one is good, five or six are better. That seems even truer today, when deals are inked for sequels before the first film even gets released. Even worse, it seems that over the years we’ve been bombarded by terrible sequels or worse, sequels to movies that weren’t all that great to begin with. And yet, there are those movies that are so good, they need – nay, deserve – to have their stories continued on the big screen...

Just about everybody loves to sit down and watch a nice Christmas story; any story that either shows the true meaning of Christmas (the presents, yo), or how one must save Christmas for whatever reason.
Either way, stories of Christmas miracles seem to have a way of warming our hearts, no matter how ridiculously unlikely or serendipitous the story may be. And now for my stunningly smooth transition to the real review: Tokyo Godfathers. Satoshi Kon’s third film is a great example of a Christmas story, but unlike most Christmas stories, this movie is about a group of unlikely heroes. So everyone’s inbox should have had the news this morning. Fox is going to go ahead with a live action adaptation of the much loved anime from Shinichiro Watanabe, Cowboy Bebop. And yes, Keanu Reeves will take the role of Spike Spiegel. You’ll remember our collective gnashing of teeth in December.
As far as Hollywood people involved there is no director set for the project but Reeves’ manager, Erwin Stoff, will be producing with 3 Arts. The script is in the hands of a short film director Peter Craig.
Now, here is where our hope lies folks. Sunrise president Kenji Uchida, the TV series’ director of animation, Shinichiro Watanabe, and series writer Keiko Nobumoto will serve as associate producers. Series producer Masahiko Minami will serve as production consultant. This doesn’t mean that I, myself, am breathing any easier but I’m not doing it into a paper bag anymore.

Keanu Reeves is taking an intergalactic mission again. "The Day the Earth Stood Still" star has signed on to the 20th Century Fox' live-action film version of the Japanese anime series "Cowboy Bebop."
Set in the year 2071, the late 1990s series focuses on a group of bounty hunters traveling on their spaceship, the Bebop. Reeves, 44, would play Spike Siegel, one of the bounty hunters and copilot of the Bebop.
No word yet on who would play Jet Black, Spike's copilot.
Sunrise Inc., producer of the anime series, will be involved with the project. Kenji Uchida and Shinichiro Watanabe will be the associate producers along with Keiko Nobumoto, Variety reports.

Keanu Reeves has been talking up his planned adaptation of the Japanese anime Cowboy Bebop since last summer. Who knew we were actually supposed to believe he has the pull to get his obscure passion projects made? Variety has made all the rumors official, announcing that Reeves will star in the live-action adaptation. Reeves will play Spike Spiegel, a bounty hunter living in the year 2071 and traveling through space as part of a gang of bounty hunters. Series writer Keiko Nobumoto and producer Masahiko Minami will be part of the production, but Peter Craig, a screenwriter with pretty much no high-profile credits to his name, will take care of writing the screenplay. I know literally nothing about Cowboy Bebop other than a poster my friend Nicole used to have on her wall in college, and I would call her for details but she's definitely asleep. So I'll have to leave...

Twentieth Century Fox is bringing the Japanese anime TV series "Cowboy Bebop" to the big screen, with Keanu Reeves attached to star as a bounty hunter traveling through space in 2071.
One of the big titles in anime, "Bebop" is set in a time where "astral gates" make interstellar travel possible. Humanity, decimated by a lunar explosion resulting from a gate accident, spread out across the solar system, as did crime, which gave rise to the use of bounty hunters.
Reeves would play Spike Spiegel, a bounty hunter and former member of a crime syndicate. Spiegel, along with Jet Black, a fellow bounty hunter and former cop, are the two pilots of the spaceship Bebop.
Peter Craig is writing the script.

Keanu Reeves told MTV that the live-action adaptation of the popular Cowboy Bebop will take “Asteroid Blues”, the first episode and expand it into a feature. “We’ve got the rights, we’ve got a writer,” Reeves said. “He’s putting together a scene outline.”
Reeves and producer Eric Stoff acquired the rights via 20th-Century Fox in a deal announced over the summer.
The series was one of the early anime hits in the 1990s and gained a cult following for the 26 episodes, created by Shinichiro Watanabe and Keiko Nobumoto, which were produced and aired on Cartoon Network. Bandai Entertainment released the entire series and anime film Bones on DVD. It has made frequent appearances on top anime lists both here and in Japan.
“It’s got a Western quality, a Western film noir aspect to it,” Reeves said. “It’s got so much style to it, and that’s part of its appeal.
