'Dirty Dancing' sequel is moving forward without Johnny Castle, the character originally played by the late Patrick Swayze.
In August, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer surprised fans of the film by reportedly confirming that a follow-up to the 1987 cult-classic was on the way, with Jennifer Grey reprising her role as Frances 'Baby' Houseman as well as serving as an executive producer, reports NME.
In an interview with People Grey, 60, has now revealed that the film will not recast Patrick Swayze’s character and instead will go in a different direction to its beloved predecessor.
Swayze, who played Baby’s love interest in the original film, sadly passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009.
“All I can say is there is no replacing anyone who’s passed… you never try to repeat anything that’s magic like that. You just go for something different,” she said.

Prolific composer Diane Warren has written nine number one songs and had 32 tunes hit the Top Ten on the Billboard Charts. She has won a Grammy, an Emmy, a Golden Globe and three consecutive Billboard Music Awards for Songwriter of the Year. She’s also be named ASCAP’s Writer of the Year three times and was inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame in 2001. But one honor that has eluded her is the Academy Award. Though she hasn’t reach Susan Lucci territory (she finally won an Emmy for “All My Children” on her 19th nomination) Warren has been a bridesmaid at the Oscars 11 times.
But she may well win this year for her wistful ballad “Io Si (Seen)” from the Italian-language Netflix drama “The Life Ahead,” which begins streaming Nov. 13. Laura Pausini, who recorded the song, co-wrote the Italian lyrics with Niccolo Agliardi.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed what we first told you back in mid-July, in what he billed as “one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood”: Jennifer Grey is starring and executive producing a new Dirty Dancing movie at the mini-major.
Warm Bodies director Jonathan Levine is shepherding the project with Gillian Bohrer from a screenplay by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis.
The first Dirty Dancing movie was released in 1987 by Vestron and grossed $218 million at the global box office off a $5M production cost. The pic won an Oscar and Golden Globe for the original song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” by Frank Previte, John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz. At the Globes, Dirty Dancing was nominated in the comedy/musical category with nods for Patrick Swayze as comedy/musical actor and as well as Grey in the best actress category.

Exclusive: A new untitled dance movie is taking shape at Lionsgate, set in the 1990s and starring and executive produced by Dirty Dancing Golden Globe nominee Jennifer Grey. While details are being kept quiet, there’s some rumblings that a new Dirty Dancing movie could be in the works. Sources aren’t confirming, but they aren’t putting the idea in a corner either.
Lionsgate holds distribution rights to the Dirty Dancing films, and Grey, of course, played teenager Baby in that movie who falls for her Catskills resort dance instructor, Johnny Castle, played by the late Patrick Swayze. The classic tune seems to have had nine lives since its 1987 release.

While the Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes duet "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" will forever be associated with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey's hip-shaking finale in the hit 1987 film "Dirty Dancing," the timeless song has had something of a revival as of late. Not only is it sampled in the latest Black Eyed Peas track, "The Time (The Dirty Bit)," but it also has done a running sprint and lift into a new generation's hearts thanks to the cast of "Glee" covering it in that show's latest episode, "Special Education."
Chord Overstreet and Dianna Agron took over Medley and Warnes' duties, while the rest of the cast provided backup, for an appropriate (not to mention winning) choice for the sectionals competition.
