Grey’s Anatomy has broken many hearts over its 20 seasons (and counting), but it’s also angered fans with how certain characters were written off. Realistically, no one wants to see their favorite character leave a show, but if it’s handled the right way, a good departure allows the legacy of the character to remain untouched.
While there are many factors that go into planning and handling a character’s exit, the final product can be hit or miss. Here are what we consider to be the worst and most unnecessary exits from TV’s longest-running primetime medical drama.
10. April Kepner
While April’s (Sarah Drew) departure in season 14 could be considered a “happy ending” for the character, it was deeply unsatisfying for viewers. She had apparently been dating Matthew (Justin Bruening), who she left at the altar, for months and didn’t tell anyone. That itself is surprising but...

Cold Case may be returning to CBS. The network is considering a reboot of the police procedural drama created by Meredith Stiehm. The original series aired on CBS for seven seasons before it was cancelled in 2010.
Kathryn Morris, Justin Chambers, Thom Barry, John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford, Danny Pino, Sarah Brown, and Tracie Thoms star in the original Cold Case series. The story follows Philadelphia Police Detective Lilly Rush (Morris) and her team as they work to solve investigations that are no longer being actively pursued by the department.

CBS is looking to reopen Cold Case. A reboot of the crime procedural, which aired for seven seasons from 2003 to 2010, is currently in development at the Eye Network, our sister site Deadline reports.
Fifteen years after the original series ended, this new iteration would follow an entirely different group of detectives dedicated to investigating unsolved crimes. Though additional details are being kept under wraps, one confirmed change from the original series is its setting; the reboot would take place in the Southwest, whereas the original was set in Philadelphia.

This article contains spoilers through Grey’s Anatomy season 17.
Dr. Alex Karev, brought to life by Justin Chambers, is one of Grey’s Anatomy’s most dynamic characters, permanently leaving a mark on the series even after his exit. While he started off as a jerk back in season one, he quickly became a fan favorite as we peeled back the layers of who he actually was.
Against all odds, he didn’t just survive his time at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, but thrived. Not only was he Meredith’s person after Cristina left, but he was there for all other characters when they needed someone over the years. Then entered Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), who he fell deeply in love with and eventually married. So why did he suddenly leave in season 16 and why was it such an awful ending for the character? Let’s break it down.

This article contains spoilers for all of Grey’s Anatomy.
Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy, TV’s longest-running primetime medical drama, is quickly approaching. If past premiere episodes are anything to go by, season 20’s first installment “We’ve Only Just Begun” is going to feature an abundance of drama to set up the rest of the season.
The series first premiered back in 2005 and follows the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial, who are constantly faced with life-or death decisions. Over the years, we’ve seen fan favorite characters come and go, new ones join the ensemble, and many devastating character deaths. So picking the 10 most dramatic season premieres was not only a difficult task, but a real emotional rollercoaster.

Season 3 Episode 1
Denny’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) death leaves Izzie ( Katherine Heigl) all “dark and twisty” and her friends at a loss of what to do to help her.

It took a surgeon’s scalpel to excise the must-see episodes out of the 420 that Grey’s Anatomy has aired. But you don’t have to stop with these: Hulu now carries the run of the medical drama, plus new episodes starting March 15, the day after they air on ABC. 1. “A Hard Day’s Night” (Season 1 Episode 1) The first shift at Seattle Grace for surgical interns Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), George O’Malley (T.R. Knight), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) sets the tone for the instantly addictive series. The hour is marked by competition, anxiety, lust and bad decisions—like Meredith unwittingly bedding her new boss, skilled neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). 2. “As We Know It” (Season 2 Episode 17) Everett Collection This iconic conclusion of a nail-biting two-parter finds Meredith with her hand inside a patient’s chest cavity, trying to stem his bleeding and keep an embedded explosive from detonating.

Emmys producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay had reason to be upbeat the morning after the kudocast: In what seems to be a rarity for awards shows these days, their production earned almost universally high marks from critics and viewers. For the 75th annual celebration, the Jesse Collins Entertainment trio leaned into nostalgia and the history of television to create a three-hour event that paid tribute to the small screen.
“It was ambitious, and we were like, ‘Is this actually going to work?’ But we felt good about it in the end,” Collins told Variety on Tuesday morning. Except for one thing: The 75th Emmys on Fox faced an NFL wild card game, as well as news coverage of the Iowa caucuses. Throw in awards show fatigue (coming right after the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards) and confusion over the delayed Emmys (pushed four months from...

Emmys 2024 Highlights: Moments That Made The Award Memorable ( Photo Credit – Emmys – Television Academy / Instagram )
The 75th Emmy Awards is one of the most prestigious awards in the television world, and this year, the shows – Beef, Succession, and The Bear dominated the ceremony by bagging most of the awards. Like every award show, it, too, was an eventful one with some fantastic moments. Some were emotional, and some were funny. Let us take a look at the Emmys 2024 Highlights.
For the unversed, the Emmys took place after a delay of four months due to the Hollywood strikes. It was initially set to take place in September 2023. Anthony Anderson hosted the award ceremony, and he had his mother in the audience to help him occasionally carry forward the ceremony smoothly.

The long-delayed Emmy Awards for the 2022-2023 TV season had to overcome the challenge of seeming like a complete afterthought — and for the most part it succeeded.
The ceremony for the 75th Emmys was designed as a tribute to the medium, and featured reunions from shows such as “All in the Family,” “The Sopranos,” “Martin” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” the last of which featured the beloved, departed cast members Katherine Heigl and Justin Chambers, alongside Og stars Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. Among the evening’s highlights were Jennifer Coolidge thanking “all the evil gays,” Niecy Nash-Betts thanking herself and “every Black and Brown woman who have gone unheard, yet overpoliced,” and a moving, hilarious appearance by nominee Christina Applegate as the show’s first presenter. And HBO’s “Succession” took its final victory lap after the Jesse Armstrong-created series ended in May of last year, including...

The 75th Emmys on Monday, January 15, included an eagerly-awaited reunion of beloved Grey’s Anatomy cast members Ellen Pompeo, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, James Pickens Jr., and Chandra Wilson. The host of the show, Anthony Anderson, began the sequence by recounting his mother, Mama Doris, and her love for medical dramas, especially Grey’s Anatomy. Then, the cast walked into the mock medical room in full red carpet regalia. “When the first episode of Grey’s Anatomy aired in March of 2005, I’m not sure if Shonda Rhimes knew that she had created a show that would have a lasting imprint on television and create lifelong friendships,” Pompeo said to the audience. They all spoke on the impact of the series, with Heigl cheekily mentioning how much things have changed since the show’s inception, a nod to her shifting away from the series. “And yes, there have been changes over the years,...

You may have heard that the 75th edition of the Emmy Awards is finally happening on Monday, capping a nearly four-month delay resulting from the twin WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. I think “Gunsmoke” and “The Andy Griffith Show” were still all the rage when this process began, JFK was President and a loaf of bread was a quarter. Alas, I exaggerate (though just a bit). But for this and no doubt other reasons, the TV Academy is clearly in a nostalgic mood, slating mini-reunions and tributes to and/or visual recreations of a dozen shows to mark the occasion.

The Television Academy has announced the full list of performers and presenters who will appear at the upcoming 75th Emmy Awards.
The show, which was originally supposed to air in 2023, will now take place on Monday night (January 15) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The ceremony is going to air on Fox and will be broadcast live coast-to-coast. It will be available on Hulu the next day.
The executive producers of the show have teased that there will be “show-stopping cast reunions and tributes to hit television series spanning seven-plus decades.”
Host Anthony Anderson also revealed his unconventional plan for keeping things moving on Emmy night. Instead of the traditional play-off music to wrap up long speeches, for the first time in Emmy history, his mother, Doris Bowman aka Mama Doris, will act as the “enforcer” to ensure a swift pace of the telecast.

Updated Jan. 12, 11:20 a.m.: Updated to include more reunions information, plus additional presenters and performers.
Fox is bringing back two of its 1990s staples — “Martin” and “Ally McBeal” — for one night only. The two shows are among the roster of cast reunions planned for the 75th Emmys on Fox this Monday.
Emmy Awards executive producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay have planned a ceremony that leans heavily on the history of TV, given the award’s diamond anniversary. Tributes and reunions will focus on decades from the 1950s to the present.
“I think they’ll be talking about the ones that they may see on the screen,” Rouzan-Clay says of the reunions. “Those are going to be a big talking point, a big watercooler moment, if you will. … It was a grand task to figure out how to celebrate 75 years of television. Meredith Grey has left Seattle.
The highly anticipated event transpired on Grey's Anatomy Season 19 Episode 7, and to say that it was underwhelming would be an understatement.
Join super fans Meaghan Frey and Joshua Johnson and Senior Staff Writer Jasmine Blu as they discuss what the hell happened.
Did the heavily promoted "Farewell Meredith" episode live up to the hype? Discuss.
Meaghan: I couldn't have been more disappointed in this episode. I was annoyed that they were promoting this like it was Mer's final episode when it was confirmed that she would return for the finale; I still expected more.
When Jackson left the show, Jesse Williams had always intended on returning from time to time, just like Ellen Pompeo, so why did he get a better goodbye than their main character? No montage, no emotional goodbyes between Mer and any character, and no classic Grey's Anatomy songs?
I don't know who Ellen pissed off,...

Spoiler Alert: This essay contains spoilers from “I’ll Follow the Sun,” the Feb. 23 episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.”
From her first episode as Dr. Meredith Grey on March 27, 2005 — when “Grey’s Anatomy” premiered on ABC and became a once-in-a-generation pop-culture sensation — to what’s being billed as a goodbye episode on Feb. 23, 2023, Ellen Pompeo could forge chemistry with anyone. Along with its lexicon-changing writing and intricate yet rowdy plotting by Shonda Rhimes, what’s made “Grey’s Anatomy” a phenomenon was watching Meredith just live her life. She was a character network television never seen before: a brilliant woman whose life had been marred by tragedy, yet who wasn’t going to let her dark and twisty past get in her way. Meredith had a lot of fun; she saved a lot of lives; she had a lot of sex.
And it was her relationships that made “Grey’s Anatomy” stand out at first.

Since Grey’s Anatomy first premiered in 2005, it has aired 19 seasons, 406 episodes, and birthed 3 spinoffs. Naturally the show has had to adapt as cast members come and go throughout the years. This sometimes makes it hard to recall what exactly went on in season 1. Although who can forget Addison Montgomery (then Shepherd) saying the iconic line, “I’m Addison Shepherd … and you must be the woman who’s been screwing my husband.”
With every new intern class that Grey’s introduces viewers to, it always throws in a few Easter eggs to remind fans what made them fall in love with the show in the first place. However, it seems season 19 wanted to take this even further. Grey’s Anatomy season 19 launches a soft reboot that allows the series to ground itself in its season 1 roots. In March 2005, ABC premiered a medical procedural as a midseason replacement for “Boston Legal.” It featured no huge names and wasn’t helmed by an auteur writer: “Grey’s Anatomy” came out of nowhere to become a primetime phenomenon. The series about a group of surgical interns learning their craft, falling in and out of love, and working at a hospital that is a hotbed for large-scale crises has been on the air for 19 seasons and is the longest-running drama series ABC has ever aired.

Grey's Anatomy is gearing up to say goodbye to its leading lady, but could it be saying hello to one of its former stars?

Yes, Grey’s Anatomy is still running. And no, you haven’t missed anything. In fact, ABC’s once fan-favourite Emmy-adorned medical series – which premiered its 19th season last month – has only continued its steady decline since Sandra Oh’s heartbreaking exit signified its expiration nine seasons ago.
When Shonda Rhimes’s serial drama began in 2005 with its core cast of Seattle-based surgical interns, including determined Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), caustic Cristina Yang (Oh), irritating Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), innocent George O’Malley (Tr Knight) and underdog Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), it shattered viewing records. With its harmonious balance between fascinating medical mysteries and the consistently chaotic personal lives of the doctors, Grey’s Anatomy was simply brilliant.

When the 19th season of “Grey’s Anatomy” premieres on ABC on Oct. 6, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) will be front and center in the episode, as she’s been since the series made its debut on March 27, 2005. Meredith is now the chief of surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, and she’s been charged with rebuilding its surgical intern program after it was dismantled last season following a patient’s death. Five of those interns will be new characters this season.
Yet as Variety reported over the summer, Pompeo (and Meredith) will soon be taking a step back, and will appear in only eight of this season’s episodes — though all the episodes will still have Meredith’s voiceover at the beginning and end. Few actors this year took as big of a swing and connected as hard as Matthew Goode. On the Paramount+ limited series “The Offer,” the British actor plays legendary Paramount production boss and all-around raconteur Robert Evans and nails Evans’s recognizable accent and devil-may-care vibe with aplomb. The performance is so strong that Goode, an Emmy Award nominee for “The Crown,” has earned some of the best reviews of his career for the project – even from his normally picky friends.
“I’m not on social media – which is probably a very good thing – so I got some nice feedback off of my friends because they haven’t seen me doing anything like that,” Goode tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “They were all like, ‘Jesus, you’re actually alright.’ Thanks, guys.”

This story about Matthew Goode first appeared in The Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In the sixth episode of the Paramount+ limited series “The Offer,” “The Godfather” movie is finally in preproduction, the formerly outraged mafia has been pacified by some script changes, and Marlon Brando has signed on to star in the film for scale. But the rug is about to be pulled from beneath Paramount’s feet with parent company Gulf and Western seconds away from voting to sell the studio to a young oil tycoon. Before they can count the ayes, Bob Evans, played by English actor Matthew Goode, bursts into the room resplendent in a chic, late ’70s polyester business suit, oversized glasses and a trademark California bronze, and delivers the speech of his life, successfully persuading financially motivated execs to hold off on the deal and believe in the power of movies.

Juno Temple has been on a roll for the past year. Last June, she was cast as Bettye McCart, an assistant to producer Al Ruddy, on the Paramount+ limited series “The Offer,” about the making of “The Godfather.” In July, Temple received her first Emmy Award nomination for playing Keely on the hit series “Ted Lasso.” Later that same month, Temple won further raves for her performance on Season 2 of the Apple TV+ comedy, which has her back in the Emmy conversation once again.
“I’m just stoked that it has opened doors for certain people that hadn’t been opened before – me included,” Temple tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “I’m not sure ‘The Offer’ would have come into my world [without ‘Ted Lasso’]. That was something that I remember getting the phone call being offered ‘The Offer,’ and I was like, ‘What do you mean? Oh my God.

If you’ve watched ABC’s medical drama Grey’s Anatomy from the beginning — since Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) first day at the hospital then called Seattle Grace — you’ve now seen exactly 400 episodes of the series. Grey’s reached that 400-episode milestone with the Season 18 finale, “You Are the Blood,” which has an 8.9/10 average score on IMDb. That score is stellar, but IMDb voters’ top 10 Grey’s Anatomy episodes all have scores above 9, with the top-voted episode scoring 9.7 — a sign of near-perfection. We’re listing the current top 10 below, but you can also check out the show’s lowest-voted episodes if you’re so inclined. (Seems like Grey’s fans care very little for the episodes that had Justin Chambers and Patrick Dempsey exiting stage right.) 10. Season 14, Episode 7: “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story” The show’s 400th episode just aired, but it’s the 300th installment that kicks off this list.

As part of Paramount+’s “The Offer,” makeup designer Katy Fray had to recreate looks from “The Godfather.” That meant transforming Justin Chambers and Giovanni Ribisi into Marlon Brando and Joe Colombo, respectively.
Ribisi gained 30 pounds to play the part of crime boss Colombo. In addition to a few prosthetic pieces, Fray took to shaving back his hair to create a receding bald comb-over. He then added a little hairpiece to the top of his head to create a thinning look.
Fray says she and Ribisi “had to convince” director Dexter Fletcher that it was the right move. “Once it’s been taken off, it’s gone,” she says.
Brylcreem was her go-to hair product to keep the hair in place, and makeup for him was minimal.
On the other hand, the most daunting challenge was transforming Chambers into Brando’s Don Vito Corleone. Fray began by researching the work of Dick Smith,...

“The Good Fight,” a spinoff of “The Good Wife,” will conclude with its upcoming sixth season, Paramount+ announced Friday.
“We’ve Loved fighting ‘The Good Fight’ these last six seasons. To be able to tell stories about an upside-down world in real time has been a gift. And to have worked with these talented, brilliant, generous actors, writers, and crew has been a blessing,” creators and executive producers Robert and Michelle King said in a statement. “Our hope-slash-scheme is to find ways to work with all of them again in the future.”
The upcoming final season will see Diane (Baranski) feel like she’s going crazy as she struggles with an uneasy sense of déjà vu, with everything from Roe v. Wade, to voting rights, to Cold War aggressions returning. Meanwhile, the lawyers of Reddick & Associates wonder if the violence that they see all around them points to an impending civil war,...

One of the many challenges facing the Paramount+ series “The Offer” was the task of ensuring its cast actually looked like the real-life figures they were portraying. Add in the fact that they were transforming into characters from one of the most iconic films of all time, and the challenge was doubly difficult.
“The Offer” tells the true, behind-the-scenes story of how “The Godfather” was made, you can see how actor Justin Chambers (“Grey’s Anatomy”) morphed into a “Godfather”-era Marlon Brando in an exclusive behind-the-scenes video above.
“I do film and I do TV, and TV wants film quality with TV time,” makeup department head Renee Vaca explains in the featurette, which details how Chambers was transformed using practical techniques.
“Justin’s got a great face to become Marlon Brando, we’re very lucky and he’s a lovely, amazing actor. He loves having the makeup done because it gets him into character,...

Peter Bart and Mike Fleming Jr. worked together for two decades at Daily Variety. In this occasional column, two old friends get together and grind their axes, mostly on the movie business.
Mike Fleming Jr: We are seeing a lot of narrative limited series based on ventures where things went wrong — Theranos, WeWork, Uber – and two that went spectacularly right. There is more acrimony directed at Winning Time — a flagging LA Lakers franchise was infused by new owner Jerry Buss with Hollywood sex appeal and a Magic Johnson-led speed game that changed the NBA from a sleepy regional sport to a global juggernaut — and then there is The Offer, about the making of my all-time favorite American movie, The Godfather.
I loved watching Winning Time, and believe it could never have worked as well, had Magic, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Jerry West lorded over an authorized version. They never...

Exclusive: The Corleone family finally has come together for a real Italian dinner. In this clip from the May 12 episode of The Offer on Paramount+, Francis Ford Coppola (Dan Fogler) greets the cast of The Godfather for their first gathering before shooting commences on the film.
Much to Coppola’s delight, the actors immediately settle into their roles. Marlon Brando (Justin Chambers) sits at the head of the table and insists that his wife be served first. He then gives a speech thanking the group for attending his birthday meal.
The Offer is based on producer Albert S. Ruddy’s experience making the 1972 film that Coppola directed and adapted with Mario Puzo from Puzo’s bestselling novel. Besides Chambers and Fogler, The Offer stars Miles Teller as Al Ruddy, Matthew Goode as Robert Evans, Juno Temple as Bettye McCartt, Giovanni Ribisi as Joe Colombo, Burn Gorman as Charles Bluhdorn, Colin Hanks...
