Hollywood’s beauty queen Nicole Kidman has been thoroughly successful throughout her more than forty-year-old and counting career, scoring roles in nearly every genre there is, including the superhero ones as well. Decades before starring in Dceu’s Aquaman film series, she also scored the role of Dr. Chase Meridian alongside Val Kilmer’s Caped Crusader in 1995’s Batman Forever.

But, surprisingly enough, she was never supposed to get cast in that movie because the role was written for someone else. However, she eventually ended up making her way into the movie and it was all because of the film’s director, Joel Schumacher, who was so obsessed with working with her that he cast her in the role despite claiming she was not fit to play the seductive doctor!

Rene Russo’s big break in “Major League” came with a minor problem.
The “Major League” writer/director David S. Ward recalled during the “Hollywood Gold” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) that Russo was “so nervous” both in the audition and on set that she kept using her hands too much in scenes. As a result, Ward opted to “tie down” her hands so Russo could temper her gestures. “Major League” marked Russo’s first role.
“The only problem we had with her was she’s Italian, and when she gets going there’s a lot of the hands, a lot of the talking with the hands, you know?” Ward said. “And they would be flying across her face.”
While filming the 1989 baseball comedy that co-starred Charlie Sheen, Ward told Russo to keep her hands out of her own face.

‘Fly Me to the Moon’ trailer lets Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum play among the stars [Watch]
“Fly Me to the Moon,” a Space Race-set romantic comedy starring two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, is about to blast off. On Monday, Apple TV+ released a trailer for the film, which lands on screens this summer via a distribution deal with Sony Pictures.
“Fly Me to the Moon” tells a fictitious story set in the late ‘60s during the lead-up to the Moon Landing. Johansson, who also serves as a producer, stars as Kelly Jones, a marketing mastermind hired by NASA to improve the space program’s image. She has professional and romantic tension with Cole Davis (Tatum), a by-the-book launch commander. Things get really wild when Jones is ordered to film a fake moon landing, just in case the real one doesn’t work. And yes, there is a Stanley Kubrick joke.

Writer Shane Black pretty much invented the "buddy cop" movie with "Lethal Weapon," his gloriously violent Christmas-set action pic that introduced moviegoers to LAPD Detectives Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover). The basic set-up of the franchise, which was helmed entirely by Richard Donner: Murtaugh plays things by the book and is close to retirement (he somehow remains "close to retirement" through a series of four films). Riggs, in sharp contrast, is a trigger-happy psycho, suicidal in the wake of the death of his wife. These two mismatched cops become partners and, of course, friends. Also, they kill a lot of people. While this is one franchise that should probably finally retire (just like Murtaugh), there's a fifth film in the works.
But we're not here to talk about that. Instead, let's go back to the days when Mel Gibson sported a mullet and wasn't problematic!

Note: The following contains spoilers for the “Loki” Season 2 finale
Despite recently telling “The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon that the “Loki” Season 2 finale marks the end of his 14-year journey as the God of Mischief, actor Tom Hiddleston told TheWrap that a potential return down the road is always a possibility.
The “Loki” Season 2 finale certainly marks an endpoint for the character, but Hiddleston said he’s open to another return if the right opportunity arises.
“In the past, I’ve said goodbye to the character and written my thank you notes and been in touch with all the guys at Marvel Studios. And they’ve always said, ‘Feel free to drop by anytime, you’ll always be part of the family.’ And then, a year later, the phone rings with ‘we got an idea’,” the actor told TheWrap. “So I think at this point, I keep an open heart and an open mind.

Anthony and Joe Russo's "Avengers: Endgame" now feels like it happened so very, very long ago. Released in April of 2019, "Endgame" was the conclusion to 21 films' worth of superhero shenanigans that had been building since the release of Jon Favreau's action flick "Iron Man" back in 2008. Now, in 2023, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has effectively petered out, attracting far less attention than it once did, largely due to audience fatigue, oversaturation (so many TV shows!), and a variety of other factors that dictate the fall of once-popular things.
But, golly, in 2019 "Endgame" was a big deal. Audiences frothed in unchecked excitement over the three-hour superhero epic that involved magic stones, time travel, mass extinction, mass resurrection, an exhausting 30-minute long death-laden battle sequence, and a cameo from Howard the Duck. At the end of the movie, Iron Man finally died, having sacrificed himself to commit mass murder, and Captain America...

This post contains spoilers for "Loki" season 2, episode 2.
Out of all heroes and villains inhabiting the MCU, Tom Hiddleston's Loki has arguably become the most three-dimensional and fully realized character. In his first introduction in "Thor," Loki yearned to be accepted as a true Asgardian, only to find out that he was actually the son of the leader of the Frost Giants, the sworn enemy of Asgard. After starting a fight with Hulk, Captain America, and Iron Man in "The Avengers" and attacking Manhattan with an alien army, Loki supposedly gets what he wants in "Thor: The Dark World" when he finally sits on the throne to rule after deceiving his own people. He seemed to show some growth in season 1 of "Loki," but his past comes back to haunt him in the second episode of "Loki" season 2. As a result, the god of mischief has something of a personality crisis.

The first season of Marvel Studios' "Loki" expanded the Marvel Cinematic Universe into a full-on multiverse. Picking up after the events of "Avengers: Endgame," the series places the trickster god (Tom Hiddleston) on a new mission with the Time Variance Authority to preserve the timeline. In addition to introducing the concept of an MCU multiverse, "Loki" also introduces the McU's current primary antagonist, Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). The show returns for its second season on Disney+ on October 6, as Loki explores the fallout from the actions of his alternate timeline variant Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino).

Lethal Weapon 3 Revisited – Does changing the formula alter how we feel about this action franchise?
Is any franchise more beloved by eighties and nineties action fans than the Lethal Weapon saga? Through four installments, the Richard Donner-directed series, which starred Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as the most iconic buddy cops of all time, Riggs and Murtagh, consistently upped the ante as far as on-screen carnage went. But what made the series work wasn’t the action; it was the affection between Riggs and Murtagh and their genuine chemistry with their director, Donner. He made the movies family affairs. And indeed, the family grew with Lethal Weapon 3, which would introduce a tremendous love interest for Riggs – Rene Russo’s Lorna Cole.
In this episode of Revisited, written by Cody Hamman, edited by John Nguyen, and narrated by Travis Hopson, we dig into how the third installment of the series brought the Riggs character full circle by having him fall in love. We explore...

The Western might be the quintessential American film genre, but it probably would've fallen completely out of favor in the 1960s were it not for Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone. With loads of ingenuity and not a lot of money (initially at least), Leone overhauled the increasingly staid formula, and knocked out a surprise international hit via "A Fistful of Dollars." Aside from Leone's striking widescreen compositions, there were two keys to the film's success: Clint Eastwood's taciturn portrayal of The Man with No Name and Ennio Morricone's bizarrely innovative score.
When Eastwood traveled to Spain in 1964 to shoot "A Fistful of Dollars," he was nearing the end of his run as cowboy Rowdy Yates on CBS' Western series "Rawhide." Despite the name, his character was a bit of a cliched bore, so teaming with the up-and-coming Leone far away from Hollywood gave Eastwood the opportunity to transform his...

Initially, the hook of Blue Bloods, at least in the marketing, was the return of TV icon Tom Selleck. But the show has become much more of an ensemble piece than it initially seemed. For instance, Donnie Wahlberg has played Danny Reagan since the CBS drama’s 2010 premiere.
The former New Kids on the Block singer is one of only five actors who’ve been with the show since the beginning. However, he knew the Blue Bloods character meant he was taking a career risk.

Geoff Murphy's 1992 sci-fi thriller "Freejack" has a fun premise. In the distant dystopian future of 2009, the ultra-wealthy can afford to hire special time-traveling agents called bonejackers to reach back in time and kidnap people the second before they are about to die. The wealthy then use futuristic technology to shunt their consciousnesses into the bodies of those they kidnapped. It's an effective way to assure immortality, as well as a clean way to acquire bodies that will not be missed by history. The problem is, when the victims are kidnapped from the past, they arrive in the future unscathed. The wealthy will indeed have to effectively "kill" their victims in order to take over their bodies.
The victims who escape are called freejacks.
As 1990s sci-fi thrillers go, "Freejack" is not terribly well remembered, nor was it an overwhelming hit (it made a mere 17 million at the domestic box office). The premise,...

Tom Hiddleston was an up-and-coming English ginger kid when he auditioned for "Thor" in 2009. He had three things going for him: First, he'd previously worked with director and fellow Royal Academy of Dramatic Art graduate Kenneth Branagh on the UK series "Wallander." Second, he had an outstanding, well-practiced talent for acting. And third, his audition saw him take his shot at being Thor himself, with a desperation that smacked more of the character for which he's now best known.
Hiddleston is so skilled that it might seem improper to focus so much on his world-famous role as the trickster god Loki. Yet, no one cares for the sly god more than him — to which his "Loki" castmates can attest. Tom Hiddleston is more than a god, though. He's a theatre star with a 2020 Tony Award nomination for his role in "Betrayal." He's a romantic leading man on the level of...

John McTiernan's flashy remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair" had a lot going against it when it first hit theaters in 1999. The original film featured two acting icons in Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway who completely embodied the roles of a billionaire playboy and a sexy art insurance agent in Norman Jewison's instant classic. The high fashion bar set in the first film would also be hard to top, thanks to costume designer Theadora Van Runkle's impeccable taste and McQueen's incredible transformation from bad boy to style icon. McQueen represented the pinnacle of Old Hollywood glamour bringing an American attitude and swagger to the character of Thomas Crown that rivaled the British self-assurance of James Bond. Really, it was the potential to update the style and fashion of the original that made remaking "The Thomas Crown Affair" actually make sense.

This article contains She-Hulk spoilers
Apart from Wanda Maximoff, few people have had as much trouble in love as Jennifer Walters in the Marvel Cinematic. Across eight episodes of She-Hulk, we’ve watched Tatiana Maslany’s hotshot lawyer be mocked as little more than a “specimen” by a rogue’s gallery of mediocre males. However, in October 6’s “Ribbit and Rip It,” we saw Jen stick a middle finger to the patriarchy with a deep cut to toxic tropes in pop culture.
Apart from winks like Eternals’ Ikaris bring compared to Superman, the MCU tends to avoid Easter eggs to DC. She-Hulk already walked the line with a nippled costume from Luke Jacobson (Griffin Matthews) being a potential nod to the infamous Batman & Robin suits, but if you were listening carefully, you might’ve heard a Green Lantern Easter egg. After doing the deed with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Jen...

The “guy in a gorilla suit” is synonymous with cheap genre film quickies. If you had a budget of pocket lint and pennies, you could knock out a low rent schlockfest where your monster was some variant of an ape in no time flat.
Hell, John Landis did just that in the early 1970s with his film, Schlock.
The ape as a monster/antagonist/friend/hero has one hell of a cinematic legacy. Nowadays the Sharksploitation flick is the subgenre that gets all the attention for how outrageously endless it is. But apes did it first.
Cinema of the 90s is experiencing its moment of nostalgic rediscovery of late, and with that comes the opportunity to dig into films of that decade and view them through a modern lens. The 90s also had its fair share of ape-centric genre entertainment. We had the (rather good) remake of Mighty Joe Young,...

Today we lost Wolfgang Peterson, a brilliant director who has helmed cinematic classes for over half a century. Peterson was known stateside for his blockbuster films, but Peterson was never a one-note director, telling rich and ambitious stories across genres. The German-born director saw great success in his homeland and successfully managed to break into Hollywood because of it. As a way to pay tribute to this fantastic filmmaker and to honor the body of work he's left behind for us to cherish, here are 5 of Wolfgang Petersen's most brilliant movies, and where you can watch them.
The Boat (Das Boot)
Known as "Das Boot" in Europe, Peterson crafted one of the greatest war films of all time with "The Boat." The 1981 German-language film centers on the crew of a submarine during World War II, forced to co-exist in cramped quarters on what we know will be a fruitless endeavor.

Petersen’s film “Das Boot” or “The Boat” (1981) launched his career in Hollywood after the close-quarters WWII submarine drama received six Academy Award nominations. The film starred Jürgen Prochnow as the German U-boat Captain, and was made into an English-language miniseries by the BBC.
His first Hollywood venture was the live-action fantasy “The NeverEnding Story” (1984), which he co-wrote. The now-cult classic follows a young boy named Bastian (Barret Oliver) who stumbles upon a fantastical world accused via a magical book. The world merges with his own when...

Wolfgang Petersen, who rode his acclaimed German-language film “Das Boot” into a career directing Hollywood blockbusters such as “In the Line of Fire,” “Air Force One,” “The Perfect Storm” and “Troy,” has died. He was 81.
The news was confirmed by his production company.
“Das Boot” (1981) was the harrowing story of life aboard a German U-boat during World War II; the genius of the film was that Petersen accomplished the unlikely feat of making audiences feel for the ordinary men serving on the submarine, who were all at least nominally in service to the Nazi cause — even the captain, played by Jurgen Prochnow, who himself parlayed the role in the film into a career as a character actor in Hollywood. Offering suspense and tragedy, “Das Boot” was nominated for six Oscars — an enormous number for a foreign film — including two for Petersen, for director and adapted screenplay. On the IMDb’s list of 250 top-rated films,...

Petersen began his career in Germany but answered the call of Hollywood after his 1981 breakout film, the claustrophobic submarine WWII epic Das Boot (The Boat), was nominated for six Academy Awards. Two of those went to Petersen for adapted screenplay and directing, and he also was nominated for a BAFTA Award and DGA Award. The film starred Jürgen Prochnow as the U-boat captain, who became a good example of Petersen’s action characters.

Though some may have recognized him from his feature film debut as George Kirk in the 2009 "Star Trek" reboot, Chris Hemsworth was a relative unknown when he landed the role of Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first "Thor" movie brought in director Kenneth Branagh, seemingly in an effort to lend some Shakespearean gravitas to it. When we first meet Thor, he comes swaggering into a golden throne room, where he winks at his mother Frigga (Rene Russo) while his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) looks on disapprovingly.

Jason Bateman has exited from the director’s chair on Artemis, the big feature film package starring Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans that Deadline told you in March that Apple swooped in to acquire in a 100 million-plus deal.
Johansson is producing with Jonathan Lia and Keenan Flynn through their These Pictures production company, which commissioned and developed the script.
We’re hearing from sources that Bateman and These Pictures amicably and mutually have chosen to part ways on the pic due to creative differences. I’m told that both sides respect the other’s work and will continue to hunt for the right project to collaborate on down the road.
Plot details for Artemis are being kept tightly under wraps, but the project is set against the space race. The screenplay hails from Rose Gilroy, daughter of writer-director Dan Gilroy and actress René Russo.

Alan Cumming’s search for information about Tonka, the baby chimp that starred in the 1997 film “Buddy” alongside him and Rene Russo, has finally borne fruit. The actor recently offered a 10,000 reward for information about the animal, which was thought to be dead in 2021.
“During the months we filmed together, baby Tonka and I became good friends, playing and grooming each other and just generally larking about,” Cumming said at the time. “It’s horrible to think he might in a cage in a dark basement somewhere or have met some other fate, so I’m appealing to whoever knows what has become of him to please come forward claim the reward.”
This week, Tonka was found alive in the home of longtime owner Tonia Haddix, where he had access to a 60-inch TV and a tablet device, and had recently participated in a St. Patrick’s Day party, according to Rolling Stone.

Alan Cumming is offering a 10,000 reward for anyone who has information about Tonka, the missing chimpanzee who starred with him and Rene Russo in the 1997 family comedy “Buddy.” Tonka was last seen in a cage at the now-defunct chimpanzee breeding facility Missouri Primate Foundation in Festus, Mo. PETA has put up its own 10,000 reward for information about Tonka’s whereabouts, bringing the total reward to 20,000.

A new episode of the Marvel Studios animated series “Marvel’s What If…?” has hit Disney+, and with it come questions as to who’s voicing which characters. The show marks Marvel Studios’ first-ever animated series and finds Jeffrey Wright’s The Watcher character narrating various scenarios in the multiverse of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that play out in ways that are different than we’ve seen before. The show’s first episode considered what would happen if Peggy Carter was injected with super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, offering an alternate take on the events of Marvel’s 2011 film “Captain America: The First Avenger.”
But as was revealed in that episode, not every MCU actor has returned for “What If?” to voice their animated counterpart. Hayley Atwell, Samuel L. Jackson and the late Chadwick Boseman all appeared in previous episodes of the Disney+ original series, whereas Chris Evans,...

In the summer of 1992, “Lethal Weapon 3” was dominating the box office, but audiences didn’t leave the theater talking about the outrageous stunts or Mel Gibson and Danny Glover’s buddy act. Rather, it was Rene Russo, a model-turned actress with a few minor roles in films like “Major League,” who stole the movie right out from under her A-list co-stars. Her turn as Sergeant Lorna Cole, a tough-talking internal affairs agent, fully capable of dodging bullets and kicking the crap out of the bad guys, was a breath of fresh air at a time when action movies were male-dominated affairs.

Bruno Dumont uses a French anchorwoman to explore his country’s media in France, a Cannes Film Festival competition entry that’s glossy and watchable but ultimately disappointing. Léa Seydoux plays France de Meurs, a TV anchorwoman and reporter so famous that she stopped for selfies everywhere she goes, from cafes to war zones. After she is involved in a traffic accident, she quits her job and ends up in a Swiss spa, but the respite she meets there isn’t quite what she’d hoped for.
It’s hard to get a handle on the intended tone of France, which darts between political satire, media critique and melodrama without getting under the skin of its central character. It’s hard to get a handle on the intended tone of France, which darts between political satire, media critique and melodrama without getting under the skin of its central character. She’s not deliciously ruthless like Nicole Kidman in To Die For, or Rene Russo in Nightcrawler; but she’s not sympathetic either, making a series of poor and selfish decisions. Had her internal dialogue been explored,...

“Loki” composer Natalie Holt immediately knew that she wanted the sliding, spacey eeriness of the theremin to musically convey the God of Mischief (Tom Hiddleston) trapped in the retro world of the Time Variance Authority (Tva). And director Kate Herron was on board with it too. They both had an appreciation for the electronic instrument’s iconic presence in “Spellbound,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” and “Star Trek.” They were also fans of theremin virtuoso Clara Rockmore, and even arranged to license a few of her pieces (including “The Swan”) to sprinkle throughout the score.
“Loki’s such a fascinating character and we can all identify with having a mischievous, cheeky side, a slightly naughty side,” Holt said. “So he’s just revealing more of his [vulnerability] in this show. I felt like it was really important for his theme to have [the theremin] and to integrate it with other instruments and...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Loki” Episode 3, “Lamentis.”]
Amid the CGI chaos of the closing’s stitched-together oners — tracking Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) as they try to reach an escape pod that never stood a chance of escaping — my mind drifted back to two earlier explosions. To an elderly, unnamed woman, resigned to die where she lived, and refusing to tolerate any tomfoolery from two “devils” aiming to trick her.
This Lamentian Homesteader played by Susan Gallagher (as she’s identified in the credits) dispatches the God of Mischief and his powerful compatriot with decisive, consecutive bursts from a futuristic shotgun. In spite of their oafish attempts, Loki and Sylvie get what they think they need — she tells them the townsfolk are all clamoring to board a train and reach the aforementioned “ark” — and, after a few more spontaneous tricks, they’re riding the rails to freedom (or so they think...

We’re halfway through the first season of “Loki,” and if there is one word to describe this new adventure through time and space, it’s “wordy.” It makes sense that a show about Loki (Tom Hiddleston) would involve a lot more talking than outright action — despite the fights and the battles he’s taken part in during his tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Loki has always been better at wielding words instead of weapons. It’s what makes him such a dangerous threat — well, besides all of the magic — because most people don’t know how to arm themselves against a person skilled at manipulation through communication.
Loki’s preference to outsmart people with his mind and his words rather than in a physical fight is apparent in this week’s episode, which sees Loki and the Variant (Sophia Di Martino), who is now going by Sylvie, become...

If there is a Marvel series primed for binge-watching, it’s the new Disney+ series “Loki,” which sees Tom Hiddleston reprise his role as the charming God of Mischief after a past version of the fan-favorite character escaped with the Tesseract, aka the Space Stone, in “Avengers: Endgame” (2019). The six-episode series, which debuted Wednesday, follows in the footsteps of the highly ambitious genre mash-up “WandaVision” and the more traditional superhero drama “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” It has the potential to be the most creative and intriguing of the three Marvel series yet, with lasting consequences for the Marvel Cinematic Universe even if the events of the series premiere don’t dovetail with the current timeline of the films.
