- DirectorWilliam WylerStarsGregory PeckAudrey HepburnEddie AlbertA bored and sheltered princess escapes her guardians and falls in love with an American newsman in Rome. Her first lead performance remains one of her best, if only because she really just played herself.
Her only Oscar win for a film. - DirectorStanley DonenStarsAudrey HepburnFred AstaireKay ThompsonAn impromptu fashion shoot at a book store brings about a new fashion model discovery in the shop clerk.Audrey spent much of her early life learning to dance(ballet), even while hiding from the Nazis. She really loved it, and although the film itself is a bit blasé her Parisian back-alley café abstract dance sequence must have been a personal career highlight for her. That and dancing with Fred Astaire. She clearly had a blast.
- DirectorFred ZinnemannStarsAudrey HepburnPeter FinchEdith EvansAfter leaving a wealthy Belgian family to become a nun, Sister Luke struggles with her devotion to her vows during crisis, disappointment, and World War II.This is simply a great film. Audrey gives a seriously powerful performance while Fred Zinnemann utilizes it to full potential with superb directing. (Possibly my personal favourite)
- DirectorBlake EdwardsStarsAudrey HepburnGeorge PeppardPatricia NealA young New York socialite becomes interested in a young man who has moved into her apartment building, but her past threatens to get in the way.If you know Audrey Hepburn then you know this film. Casting Audrey turned this dark Capote novella into a completely different film.
- DirectorGeorge CukorStarsAudrey HepburnRex HarrisonStanley HollowayIn 1910s London, snobbish phonetics professor Henry Higgins agrees to a wager that he can make crude flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, presentable in high society. That they didn't adapt this musical to accommodate Audrey's singing is kind of an outrage for anyone who does a little research on the topic. From Funny Face and Breakfast at Tiffany's we hear Audrey's singing voice and it's wonderful. Is Marni Nixon's(the singer dubbed over Audrey in the film) better? Certainly. But Audrey was still a better singer than Rex Harrison's sprechgesang. If Audrey's well-enough singing had not been dubbed over then she most assuredly would have won her second Oscar here. And what's nearly as upsetting is the film gives no credit to Marni Nixon. Never-the-less this is a phenomenal film.
- DirectorWilliam WylerStarsAudrey HepburnPeter O'TooleEli WallachThe daughter of an art forger teams up with a burglar to steal one of her father's forgeries and protect his secret. Some of you might be thinking, "What about Charade(1963, with Cary Grant)?" Well, as great a film as that is, How to Steal a Million is just funnier. In fact this is the fullest immersion Audrey would take into comedy, letting the romance ride back seat this time. It's more a com-rom, then her usual rom-coms. Peter O'Toole and Audrey make this a very amusing film.
- DirectorTerence YoungStarsAudrey HepburnAlan ArkinRichard CrennaA recently blinded woman is terrorized by a trio of thugs while they search for a heroin-stuffed doll they believe is in her apartment. An old fashioned thriller! No need for unorthodox camera work and vulgar on screen visual effects. Just great actors and a menacing plot. Audrey gives it her all in this one. (My other possible personal favourite)
Her last praise-worthy film, but by no means the last praise-worthy accomplishment of Miss Hepburn's lifetime. The following decade and a half Audrey did a few movies of no considerable mention but then took on the her greatest role; Mother to the World, as the Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.
